Hands on and rigorous.......2004-04-28
A very well written book on Risk Budgeting from a modern perspective. VAR methodologies, stress testing and working examples are very well written and a must for anyone wanting to either get into the risk measurement/ management field or an advanced practitioner in the field. I would highly recommend this book for someone wanting to get the both the theoritical and hands on practical approach to risk measurement of equity and fixed income portfolios.
Title and subject don't match........2003-07-28
This is a book on VaR masquerading as a book on Risk Budgeting. I would guess that the publisher changed the name of the book.
There are about fourty pages of three hundred that actually deal with risk budgeting: the first 153 pages are an outline of VaR. Its a fair introduction to VaR, but the title is misleading.

Careful - this is a very basic overview.......2001-08-20
This book is written for the reader who has little or no experience in currencies and currency risk. The information provided is very basic, and not of use to anyone wanting to get more than a superficial understanding of the subject. The title is "Introduction", but I still think it is (only) 100 pages of generalities, not worth the $... I paid!

Book Description
In the tradition of Susan Isaacs comes a charming debut novel featuring a lovable phone psychic, whose talents will either save her family from financial ruin -- or ruin her family altogether.
What do you do when your husband's business is failing, your daughter is ashamed of you, and your faith in your own talents hits rock bottom? Miriam is a modern-day Long Island housewife, who just happens to be a professional phone psychic. But while she can heal broken hearts, mend relationships, and help others find new careers, her own life is in shambles.
It starts with the family business. Her husband, Rory, is working every spare minute to keep his business, Mirror Pharmacy, afloat, but no matter what cost-saving measures he takes, a profit seems farther and farther away. Using her gift, Miriam tries to channel to the heart of the problem, but Rory's patience with her "readings" has worn as thin as his cash flow. Then there is Miriam's teenage daughter, Cara, who cannot stand to be in the same room with her, much less listen to any psychically generated advice. Now involved with a particularly bad-news boyfriend, she's too in love to take Miriam's warnings seriously. Miriam struggles to maintain a positive outlook -- things are bad, but they can always be worse, goes her mantra. So when a persistent agent proclaims her talents remarkable and marketable, Miriam decides to take action. But will going public ruin her family's already questionable standing in their prim Long Island community? And will her trusted spirits -- her dear departed Dad and Russian grandmother, Bubbie -- remain faithful if she "sells out"? Miriam struggles to sort through her escalating troubles and trust her abilities in times of crisis, even as her visions are becoming too cloudy to interpret.
In a quirky tale full of humor and heartache, Rochelle Shapiro captures the universal desire to find one's true self, no matter the opinions of others. Smart and sassy, Miriam the Medium is the debut of a talented and imaginative author -- one who is able to conjure with words and spirit.

Wonderfully Entertaining.......2005-06-05
Miriam Kaminsky is a normal suburban mother and wife living on Long Island in a beautiful but old house. She's troubled by money problems, a husband who works too hard trying to breath life into his pharmacy, and a typical teen-age daughter who cringes with embarrassment at everything Miriam does. But added to everything else in Miriam's life is the very simple fact that she's a psychic with a strong gift for seeing people's auras and health problems and their future. Oh, and she sees ghosts --usually helpful spirits connected to the living.
Her childhood and her family are very important to Miriam, which is why her dearly loved grandmother Bubbie is still around her as is her father, both of whom have passed away. The hardest part of her childhood was her mother, who would order Miriam not to use her gifts. It all came from love and fear for her daughter, but Miriam still feels the shame her mother pressed on her whenever she was truly herself, using her psychic gifts to help others. More than anything Miriam would love for her mother, who also passed away, to visit her like the spirits of others do. But since, in her life her mother completely disapproved of the psychic talent, Miriam doesn't see her changing her mind in the afterlife.
But the here and now also carries hardships. Rory, her loving husband is losing money in his business. Though Miriam can't put her finger on why she doesn't trust the help in the pharmacy, Rory won't listen. He doesn't want her using her psychic gifts tell him what to do with his business. He insists that Miriam's psychic phone line is her business to do with as she sees fit, and the pharmacy is his. At the same time their daughter Cara, after trying for years to become a psychic, like her mother, finally realized that she doesn't have the gift. The disappointment has crushed her and the teenager changed overnight into a whirlwind of student perfection, studying and joining school activities, all of her thoughts concentrating on going to Cornell University. Using her gifts for her loved ones doesn't work at any rate. Miriam is too close, her heart is too wrapped up in their happiness, and that affects her ability to help them.
When out of the blue a press agent calls Miriam's psychic help line and insists that she could make Miriam a national name and wealthy, Miriam refuses. Her Bubbie always warned her not to use her gifts to make money, as if she were in a carnival. But Bubbie never had as many living expenses as Miriam does. When the house's roof springs leaks, then Rory's business begins to flounder as a new thirty thousand dollar computer system is needed to fill out the health care forms that make up his business and she knows that Cara needs money for her future, Miriam agrees to do a television appearance.
Will she lose her gift if she tries to make big bucks? Will her Bubbie and her father refuse to visit her anymore? Will Cara react even worse than she has at having a mother who now publicly dances to the beat of her own drum?
This book manages to make Miriam into the lady next door. She's not a madwoman or a charlatan, just a regular person with everyday problems but who happens to have an extra talent packed inside her likable person. I found everything about Miriam and her life believable. The author Rochelle Shapiro also managed to explain to me how a woman with her own mind and self-respect could permit her teenage daughter to treat her like dreck without losing her temper. Now that's an amazing talent!
At times funny and tearfilled, Miriam the Medium is an extremely great read. I enjoyed it thoroughly and look forward to seeing more of Miriam in the future.
Excellent debut novel.......2005-02-10
I really enjoyed this book. It sat on my shelf for two weeks before I got a chance to pick it up and read it and when I opened to page 1, I didnt want to put it down.
The author makes it very easy for the reader to like Miriam and sympathize with her. She must have a teenage daughter in real ife because the parts of the novel where Miriams daughter are involved are spot on.
I eagerly await Rochelle Shapiros next book!
Mothers, Daughters, and Psychics in Suburbia.......2004-11-14
This is a quick and enjoyable read which touches on the trials of bringing up an adolescent daughter in a typical suburban community when you are not the most traditional parent imaginable.
Miriam's extraordinary psychic abilities exacerbate the normal prickly tensions between mother and daughter and this novel explores both the tensions and abilities with humor and style.
The ins and outs of the plot keep you turning the pages - financial troubles, boyfriend troubles, and the business of being a telephone psychic were all of great interest to this reader. I recommend it very highly to mothers and daughters.
Lessons from Miriam the Medium.......2004-11-10
Rochell Shapiro is a creative skillful writer, in Miriam the medium she weaves a beautiful tapestry interweaving family traditions, difficult relationships and painful events with humor love and acceptance in such a way that grabs the reader from beginning to the end. A story about who we are, our dreams and what we want to become, the role we are imposed to play by family and social status that forces us to supress our creativity and submerges us in a life of mediocrity and resignation, the batle within one self to follow your passion and at the same time stay in good terms with your imposed role and how to find the balance. How in the end love and acceptance is what matters. A story of real magic that can transform and inspire the reader to bring Love Understanding and Acceptance in their life's and relationships in a world that so much needs this qualities.
A charming debut novel.......2004-10-21
Phone psychic Miriam Kaminsky may be able to predict the future and to ask advice of the occasional visiting spirit, but she has at least as many problems as the rest of us. Her husband's pharmacy is hemorrhaging money. Her previously overachieving daughter, who is too embarrassed by her mother's profession to mention it to her friends, has taken up with Great Neck's resident bad boy, a shaven-haired hoodlum who doesn't "do" parents. And Miriam herself has become an object of interest to a broken-hearted client, thuggish restaurateur Vince Guardelli, who just may have fitted an acquaintance or two in his past with cement shoes. As her family's financial difficulties escalate, Miriam must decide whether to sell her psychic abilities on a larger stage, a lucrative option which might further alienate her daughter and disappoint the spirit of her paternal grandmother, her psychic mentor, whose shimmering image appears to Miriam frequently.
Rochelle Shapiro's charming debut novel introduces readers to the unusual demands and work-a-day business of an occupation with which most of us won't be familiar. Her Miriam is a fully sympathetic character whose psychic ability is portrayed as more often a curse than an advantage. Not only is the information Miriam receives psychically often incomplete and misleading, but her talent colors people's perceptions of her: Miriam is either fraud or freak, psychic spy or potential savior. It is a burden with which Miriam's creator is herself familiar, for the book is at least to some extent autobiographical: Great Neck resident Rochelle Shapiro is likewise a psychic whose talent was first recognized by her paternal grandmother. Let's hope there's another great read waiting for us in Ms. Shapiro's future.

a knowledgeable big-picture view about an underserved topic.......2006-06-05
After reading this book, you will laugh at newspaper reports that describe the conflict in Sudan as between "the Muslim north and Christian and animist south". Johnson not only has extensive academic publications in Sudanese ethnography and historiography, but also worked in the aid field in the country. He is also, in a well-sourced, calm and clearly presented manner, outraged at how thoroughly misunderstood the situation in Sudan is. The detail in this book is amazing. I consider myself fairly knowledgeable in an armchair kind of way about southern Sudan, and was consistently being presented with either facts of which I was unaware or, better yet, syntheses tying together various fields in a historical perspective. The offensives, famines, factionalism within southern groups, agricultural schemes, external mediators, forced displacement patterns, and competing aid agencies are all here, and presented so one can see the linkages. This is one of the rare books in which, for example, the connection between the timing of government offensives to seasonal rainfall is convincingly fit within framework of underdevelopment as a political strategy.
There are a couple points that made me consider moving this down to four stars. One is that Johnson is clearly partisan to the south. He is not fatally so in my opinion, describing some very unflattering characteristics and actions of Garang's faction, and making his bias clear from the beginning. By the end of the book, he also makes a strong case that "neutrality" has been misused or abused in the context of the Sudanese wars, and led me to muse that his outrage seems to spring from his knowledge, versus some writers about southern Sudan whose outrage impedes their learning. I also occasionally found the division of the book in its latter section into thematic sections confusing, especially in cases where the text would refer to later chapters for more information about a mentioned event or process. Fortunately, the appendix includes both a detailed chronology from 1972 through 2001 and a pretty good topical index for when I needed a bit of help orienting myself. The extensive annotated bibliography would be quite useful for some people. There is also the rather obvious issue that the book was written prior to the finalization of the peace agreement and death of Garang, which makes me anxious for an update.
Bottom line: If you want to know about the conflicts in Sudan between 1983 and 2001, then this is the book. If you've read other works on Sudan, you'll be astonished at how thoroughly Johnson annihilates the common wisdom. And whoever you are, you may come to share some of Johnson's outrage.
A NEW AND EXCITING VIEW OF SUDANESE ISLAM AND ITS' ROOTS.......2005-05-18
An intriguing book that adopts a new slant on the development of Islam in the Sudan. Author Johnson shows us, step by step how the rise of states in this region and their relations with neighbors and the West resulted in a different form of religious expression. The Dervishes that fought the British at the end of the 19th century were imbued with a fervor, according to Johnson that reflected a long-developed process of assimilation and adaptation to both the Northern Arab, the Southern African and he West in general - the colonial experience. It is a fine addition to Francis Deng's great book, WAR OF VISIONS. I found THE ROOT CAUSES OF SUDAN'S CIVIL WARS a very enlightening read. As the author of a new book on the Sudan, JIHAD: THE MAHDI REBELLION IN THE SUDAN, I must include this volume into any meaningful understanding of historical forces in this region. TOP RATED!!!
