Book Description

Your first step into the world of routing

Your first step to understanding routing begins here!

Welcome to the world of routing!

Routing is the technology that enables worldwide Internet communication. Many people involved with networking technologies or companies need to know how routing works. But learning about routing tends to involve a complex web of terms and acronyms-a language that can be difficult and unfamiliar.

No routing experience needed!

Routing First-Step explains the basics of Internet routing in language all of us can understand. This book takes you on a guided tour of routing, starting with systems you are familiar with: the postal system, the telephone system, and the interstate highway system. From there, you'll learn routing simply and easily. Whether you are looking to take your first step into a career in networking or are interested only in gaining knowledge of the technology, this book is for you!

3 out of 5 stars Leaves a bit to be desired.......2005-06-29

This is one of three routing intro books in the Cisco Press line. It appears to be positioned at the very entry level, ostensibly because of its inclusion of a chapter explaining routing with a post office metaphor, and a chapter on decimal and binary numbers.

Although the book is well organized, and covers the major routing protocols, it is surprising that, as an entry level book, there is no review of networking equipment, let alone an explanation of what a router is and how it functions. Many other basic routing concepts such as default routing and redistribution are not covered, but they may simple be beyond the scope of the book.

However, explanations of various topics included in the book leave a bit to be desired. For example, the chapter on EIGRP mentions early on that EIGRP can support discontiguous networks. An example is provided with no immediate explanation. The student would be unable to apply the knowledge to a different scenario. Later in the chapter, route summarization is explained. It is the way route summarization is configured that makes discontiguous networks possible, but that fact is not mentioned. Since the two sections are never tied together, the student will end up having to refer to a different routing primer in order to develop an understanding of the topic.

(Your first step into the world of routing)
Reviewer Name: Steve Owen Scheiderer, Network Administrator
Reviewer Certification: MCSE NT 4.0, CCNA

ISBN: 1-58720-122-4

To earn my CCNA it took a year's worth of time in Cisco Academy modules, numerous labs,
two 990+ page books, a test study guide, and the Cisco Simulator (which I also reviewed).
Bill Parkhurst did an excellant job of summarizing basic concepts in under 400 pages. I
would recommend Chapters 1 - 6 and 9 for those pursuing CCNA certification.

What is difficult to understand, from the perspective of Cisco Academy material, is why
topics like IS-IS and GP are included in this book. Even some of the OSPF discussion
seems advanced (pp. 217-227). As a mere, humble CCNA, these sections were somewhat hard
to follow and at times produced more questions than answers. On the other hand, the
introduction to these topics was appreciated and could be helpful to some who want a quick
overview of how more advanced protocols work.

Those just starting out in routing may wish to skip some of Bill's discussion. For example,
a lot of space is devoted to the "Octal Numbering System" which Bill explains "is not used
much" (p. 45). Some of the discussion was tedious and more advanced topics seemed out of
place in a book for beginners. The time spent in the practice Bill recommends would have
been better spent with the numbering systems more widely used.

While I follwed his analogy of post offices and phone systems as they parallel ip addressing,
a novice might actually find the parallels hard to follow. This is particularly true where
there are points when the analogy breaks down. At times I wished summary statements at the
end of a discussion had been put up front to help with focus (p. 90, ip headers; p. 103,
subnets and masks take time to master). At other times, concepts were mentioned prior to
their main treatment (TCP/IP Layered Model on p. 83, then explained on p. 90; VLSM on p.
142 under Rip 1, then explained as working only under Rip 2 on p. 150).

While there are many things which commend this book as a "first step into the world of
routing," I believe it is more of a mid level book. The information above is offered to
the beginner as a way to start using this as a "first step" book.

5 out of 5 stars More than expected........2004-10-27

The First-Step series are introductory books intended for those new to the topic and assumes no previous experience. Routing First-Step, by Bill Parkhurst guides the reader through the intricacies of routing by building upon situations experienced in everyday life. Throughout the book are useful illustrations, tables and configuration examples making it easier for the reader to understand the concepts presented. Each chapter ends with a series of review questions that reinforce the material read and gauge the readers understanding of the chapter. There is also a glossary provided to help the reader understand and become more familiar with industry terms.

The first chapter begins with comparing routing to events that occur in everyday. How the delivery of mail, driving from point A to point B and establishing a telephone call are synonymous with routing. In addition, the author has the foresight to begin laying the foundation for route summarization. Throughout the book, these everyday events are referenced to reinforce the concepts conveyed, making them easier to understand.

The next two chapters move into numbering systems and IP Addressing, discussing topics from converting between numbering systems to hierarchal IP Addressing schemes. For an entry level book the author went a bit overboard on the different numbering system conversions but it makes a good reference for those of us who do not remember the steps. The IP Addressing chapter is very useful, taking the binary numbering system already learned in the previous chapter and applying the concepts to hierarchical addressing, subnetting and summarization. Having a solid understanding of these concepts is necessary for anyone involved in designing an organizations IP Addressing scheme.

The book continues with the introduction of routing protocols, starting with the distance-vector routing protocols RIP v1/v2 and the Cisco proprietary IGRP/EIGRP. The next two chapters move on to the link-state protocols OSPF/IS-IS and then onto a chapter on BGP. The final chapter details the various protocols used with Multicast. The content of the chapters are much more in depth than I would have expected for this level of book (I would go so far as to say that the content rivals some of the CCNP Routing books I have read in the past). The examples and illustrations provided for each protocol will assist in building readers understanding of the information.

The author has done a wonderful job at taking a very complex subject, reducing it to its core components and presenting the material in an understandable format. When the reader completes this book, they will have a good understanding of the concepts of routing and routing protocols. I would recommend this book for those looking for an introduction to routing and IP addressing and although I would not recommend this book as the sole resource in preparing for Cisco Certification, it definitely would assist in one's efforts.

Cisco First-Step books are exactly as the name implies. This book assumes that you have zero experience with what routing is, how it works, what's the addressing structure or anything else. It starts off with a discussion on how to set up a snail mail system using horses, kind of like the Post Office had to use in its early days. How would you address an envelope? There is a convention that says the return address goes in the top left hand corner. But it doesn't have to be there, if we all agreed, it could be where ever we liked. But it has to be somewhere.

This is the level of detail of where the book begins. After that, it goes on to a highway system. You want to mail a letter from San Jose to Chicago, what kind of addressing do you need, where does the letter stop on its way. Finally, these conventions become standardized, and we give them names. The names just happen to be those of the computer protocols - surprise, surprise.

By the end of the book he is discussing Border Gateway Protocols, Multicast and things like that. By then you understand that the Post Office where you started doesn't do multicast -- they don't have copiers. By then you understand how the internet addressing scheme works. You clearly understand routing and what a router does. You're ready to move on to the next step.

      Book Description

The regulation of offshore decommissioning is a complex subject that requires attention in relation to immediate practical problems, as well as more long-term solutions that would address transparency and stability considerations. Its defining moment came in the form of the Brent Spar episode during the 1980s which unveiled an emotive public clash between different stakeholders (including host governments, oil companies, environmental pressure groups, the fishing industry, shipping interests, and the general public) and the possibility of `regulatory failure'. This meant that external events could in certain extreme circumstances override lawfully sanctioned activities, and therefore that the removal and disposal of disused installations/pipelines would have to be consistent with international environmental standards and values. Sustainable development is the most widely accepted yardstick against which decommissioning regulations should be assessed. Thus, this study on `sustainable decommissioning' looks forward to the next stage of the unfolding evolutionary process of decommissioning regulations.

            Book Description

Turbomachines are those in which energy is transferred to or from a continuously moving fluid by the motion of a rotating element. Some of the most common and important machines used in engineering and industry fall into this category, including those which absorb power (and thereby increase fluid pressure), such as fans, compressors and pumps. Also included are equally vital varieties of machines which generate power from the expansion of fluids to lower pressures such as hydraulic, steam and gas turbines.

This general definition embraces a number of devices that are classified as 'open', such as propellers, windmills and unshrouded fans. The machines examined here are those defined as 'closed', where a finite quantity of fluid can be considered to pass through the machine in unit time, for it is these which are of the most interest to students and professionals in the fields of mechanical, chemical, and plant engineering. It is in these areas that the devices that form the subject matter of this book find their most important applications, making this treatment of vital importance to anyone working in or studying them.

This was the worst book on rotating machinery that I ever picked up. Hard to follow and poorly organized, perhaps designed for the intended course work, I would not recommend that it as any reference value.
His flat theory also neglects changes in units. Which he uses outside of his own definitions in the prologue.

Like a highball mix of Elmore Leonard and Carl Hiaasen, Christopher Brookmyre hits you hard and fast. Now Brookmyre is back with his most lethal book yet: One Fine Day in the Middle of the Night. Gavin Hutchinson had it all planned out. A unique "floating holiday experience" on a converted North Sea oil rig, a haven for tourists who want a vacation but without the hassle of actually going anywhere. And what better way to test out his venture than to host a fifteenth-year high school reunion, the biggest social event of his life, except no one remembers who Gavin is. That, and his wife has discovered his philandering ways and plans to leave him with a very public announcement in front of his assembled guests. Throw in a band of mercenaries who crash the party even though they aren't on the guest list, and you have a wicked farce of a thriller from one of the most original voices in mystery fiction.

When some British mercenaries take over a floating hotel hosting a ten year high school reunion, thinking that the assembled group is a bunch of rich investors, things happen. Mistakes are made. All to the benefit of the reader.

True to his roots, Brookmyre uses his fair share of Scots slang and colloquialisms. As an American reader, I found the Scottish language bits easy to pick up and had no problem integrating the Scot-centric words into the general flow of the narrative.

That said, this is a great and really funny story. If you like Tim Dorsey, Christopher Moore, Robert Rankin, Carl Hiaasen, Elmore Leonard, or any other screwball hip writer, this is the stuff for you. Anyone else pooh-pooh-ing on this novel probably reads Grisham or Clancy for a laugh.

I have tried a number of the authors that other amazon folks have recommended as being "as funny as Christopher Moore" (whom I have loved ever since finding a proof copy of Coyote Blue at a flea market for $1) but so far this one is the best. The characters are fleshed out and funny, lovingly eccentric, the action is not predictable, and best of all the ending is creative and not just a blood bath. The beginning is a bit bloody, but hang in there for a great ride with a wonderful bunch of characters you would love to party with. Lots of fun, and the man can write.

                  5 out of 5 stars a perfect read.......2005-06-26

I find it disappointing that many people use mayhem generally. And it never really seems to get worked into the plot satisfactorily. Thankfully, there is Christopher Brookmyre to remedy this situation. Mr. Brookmyre chooses his words with crisp, dramatic, and killingly comedic perfection. I wish I were someone who has yet to read this book. I think the last time I laughed out loud this often was when I read either another title by this author (although this one is my favorite) or maybe Naked by David Sedaris. I have bought this book several times to give to friends and family. Decommissioned oil rig as leisure fantasy world...off the coast of Scotland.... sigh.

4 out of 5 stars Honing his skills.......2003-11-23

Brookmyre is one of the few authors who can make me laugh out loud. This was the second of his books that I read and (forgive the cliche) I could hardly put it down. He always has a semi-political message, but he masks it under some really funny adventure. The scene where the ex-cop starts gets involved in the story is truly genius. He has a talent for making you care about his characters. People do occasionally die in Brookmyre's books, but he stays well away from really bringing you down. This book will make just about anyone happy -- it's a great book for a quiet evening at home but won't tax you too greatly if you're looking for a holiday read.

4 out of 5 stars Now that we are this book, here's what I say:.......2003-02-10

Everything is bad news if it comes with a deadline that isn't met. This book, THE SOLDIER AND THE STATE: THE THEORY AND POLITICS OF CIVIL-MILITARY RELATIONS by Samuel P. Huntington, a young Harvard professor in 1957, when the book first appeared, attempted to establish assumptions that would allow respectable consideration of policies that, in our world, might be used to define who we have become. My differences with this book might be ascribed to a theological framework in which this book is seen as having assumed the existence of hell on earth as the situation which people who voiced political aspirations that did not coincide with the prevailing superpower mentality would have to put up with. The famous Winston Churchill once said something about assumptions up with which he would not put, and the success of this book might be measured by how its views are assumed to be the American views in those parts of the world where America as a superpower is most unpopular.

This review is being written in a short window of time in which the rulers of Saudi Arabia, whose success, so far, has been contingent on the opposite of liberal policies (they previously granted religious authorities who were considered the most conservative element within Arabian society a veto power over anything the government might do) are hoping that an American victory in Iraq might allow all American troops to be removed from Saudi Arabia, so that democracy might be granted to the people of Saudi Arabia (at a time when the average age is 15 years old) without fear that the anti-American views of Arabian young people will be the dominating political force determining the shape of the parties who will soon be able to demand more control than their government has ever been able to apply to society. As the situation in Venezuela at the moment illustrates, fights over how much oil is being pumped, and who ought to benefit from the economic miracle that oil provides, can do strange things in a nation with a democracy that attempts to let a majority of the people rule.

Huntington considers America an exception to such class considerations. Though not specifically concerned with the role of Blacks in American society, he assumes that their politics has been entirely liberal in nature. "No nascent group ever developed a radical ideology challenging the established order: it was always too quickly assimilated into that order. . . . Radicalism and conservatism were equally superfluous. Incipient and established groups both adhered to liberalism." (p. 145). The few attempts to establish conservative values in American history were mainly ignored by a society that was exuberantly growing in spite of any ideology which might attempt to exercise some form of control. The early part of the twentieth century had produced few instances in which policy had needed an exit strategy, and any attempt to find one in the index of THE SOLDIER AND THE STATE leads to the following entries:

Expertise, a characteristic of a profession, 8-9; of officership, 11-14

                  Extirpation, U.S. policy of, 155-156

Even page 154 has a bit on professionalism. As Woodrow Wilson said during World War I, "America has always boasted that she could find men to do anything. She is the prize amateur nation in the world. Germany is the prize professional nation in the world. Now, when it comes to doing new things and doing them well, I will back the amateur against the professional every time." The lure of popularity in a liberal society can easily produce this result. "In domestic politics each liberal group tends to identify the military with its own particular enemies. Without any recognized function in a liberal society and standing outside the ideological consensus, the military have been a universal target group." (p. 154). Extirpation is the name given to such a policy in this book. "Liberalism's injunction to the military has in effect been: conform or die. On the one hand, American liberalism has supported the virtual elimination of all institutions of violence and thus has attempted to do away with the problem of civil-military relations entirely. This is a policy of extirpation. On the other hand, when it has been necessary to maintain armed force, American liberalism has insisted upon a rigorous subjective civilian control, the refashioning of the military institutions along liberal lines so that they lose their peculiarly military characteristics. This is a policy of transmutation." (p. 155). There are no entries in the index for hyperbolic topics like sex, soldiers, or swearing, so there is little opportunity in this book for the ideas which strike me most, considering the unique psychic characteristics of the transmutation of the typical swinging Richard into a short-term ...assassin at Waco, Texas on April 19, 1993, or less notoriously, of any Naval doctor who kept a copy of the Kennedy autopsy photographs at Bethesda Naval Hospital in the ten years after this book first appeared, but I'm convinced that such ideas are within the realm of what is considered conservative in this book. Some people are sick of this kind of thing, and keep projecting its insanity on me, of all people, who tries to keep tying everything to the new direction of American society. I wonder if this makes us the entertainment capital of the world, or what?

5 out of 5 stars The best book ever written on civil-military relations.......2002-08-09

At the time of its original publication in 1957, Samuel Huntington's The Soldier and the State reflected a new age in American history--the Cold War era. Huntington, a young Harvard professor of government, focused on policy problems concerning civilian direction of the military under the terms of the Cold War. Basically, he contended that traditional American liberalism was outdated and in fact had begun to pose a national security danger. Until this era, the absence of an overt military threat to American security allowed for a policy of civilian control of the military compatible with liberal democratic values. Traditionally, liberal solutions to domestic problems had likewise been applied to military problems, frequently resulting in failure.

Huntington offered a theoretical framework for modern civil-military relations. He insisted that liberalism was fundamentally opposed to the proper military ethic; the application of subjective civilian control over the military actually aimed at weakening military professionalism, which was viewed as a threat to democracy, liberalism, and American values. The Cold War, though, required America to keep a large national army during peace time; the army could not return to its traditionally subordinate role. There was perpetual tension between the demands of national security and the values of American liberalism: either American security must be compromised or the influence of liberalism weakened. Only a conservative environment allowed for equilibrium between political influence and the military professionalism that ensured national security. This balance could only be achieved, Huntington argued, by objective civilian control of the military. By maintaining independent spheres of power, with no fusion of civil and military control, national security goals could be maximized with a minimum sacrifice of social values. Objective civilian control allowed for the proper growth of military professionalism while keeping the military a subordinate tool of state policy. The fulcrum of civil-military relations was the relation of the officer corps to the state.

Huntington was successful in presenting the military as inherently conservative and unwarlike. The military prepared for war but never sought such engagement. Huntington encapsulated the premise of the military mindset as conservative realism. This mindset "holds that war is the instrument of politics, that the military are the servants of the statesman, and that civilian control is essential to military professionalism." This military ethic contrasted with the stereotype of the military as dangerously warlike. A weakness of the book is Huntington's description of military trends between the Civil War and the Great War. Huntington argued that the officer corps remained isolated during this period, allowing it to develop a professionalism free of civilian interference. This isolation theory has been largely disproved by pointing to the military's involvement in putting down labor strikes, relations between officers and the business community, etc. This defect should not detract from the importance of this book as a virgin exploration into a comprehensive history of the American military tradition. With its conservative thesis, it remains in my mind the seminal work on civil-military relations.

Incisive and remarkably relevant. Huntington delves into the role of the military in shaping and protecting a society. A MUST read for anyone who is in, or deals with the military.

4 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work on Civil-Military Relations.......1998-10-19

Though growing dated in many ways, Huntington's 1950's history of the development of US civil-military relations is extremely instructive to both civilian and military readers alike. Huntington uses a comparisons with the German and Japanese pre-WWII experiences to contrast the American, as well as to develop his own theory as to what the ideal form of civil-military relations should be. Huntington's book should be a must-read, even in its dated form, for anyone who could possibly exercise political influence that could result in military action.

Soldiers and Civilians analyzes the emerging civil-military "gap" in the United States, drawing on a major survey of military officers, civilian leaders, and the general public. The book's contributors, leading scholars of defense policy, find that numerous schisms have undermined civil-military cooperation and harmed military effectiveness.

Focusing on Marburg, a contentious university town where voters demonstrated strong electoral support for Adolf Hitler's National Socialist party, this imaginative study discusses the political role of small-town organizational life and painstakingly reconstructs the full range of Nazi sympathizers' cross-affiliations with local voluntary groups.

                                  Book Description

The First Complete and Practical Guide to the Integration, Design, and Analysis of Machines and their Motions.

Designed to improve the engineer's intuitive approach to machine design, this practical guide offers a clear understanding of the principles of the geometry of motion and the real-world connections between kinematic phenomena and the behavior of actual machines. It provides all of the information and graphical tools and techniques you'll need to select, visualize, integrate, and analyze machines and mechanisms for a wide range of applications. Building logically from the simplest, most easily visualized mechanisms and motions to the more complex, you'll get complete, well-illustrated coverage of: crank-sliders and inverted crank-sliders; pin-jointed and general four-bar linkages; multihoop linkages; gears and gear trains; quick-return mechanisms; cams. In addition, you'll find step-by-step procedures for designing mechanical systems to give prescribed motions--plus, proven methods for analyzing displacements, velocities, accelerations, force and torque relationships, and statically and dynamically balancing systems.

This unique reference is a must-reading for every engineer and designer who wants to fully exploit CAD's capabilities by minimizing the trail-and-error involved in searching for satisfactory machine design solutions.

This book is a good source on analyzing geometric problem of linkage designs. It provided a good solution for simple linkage problem, especially a four bar linkage design. More practical approaches and easier drawing sketches would be great.
