Straight and to the point.......2006-07-27
Most texts I've read on Accounting (from my father's extensive library) are long on explanation and short on worked examples. The Schaum series on Accounting is just the opposite. No need to wade through a ton of explanation. A short explanation is followed by worked examples and numerous test questions followed by the answers, fully worked. I'm just starting out in accounting, and sometimes the concepts didn't really gel with me. But by doing the test questions, and in particular being able to check the results and supplied workings, I found that I learnt the principles much more quickly than I would have otherwise, and was able to retain the understanding.
I borrowed this book from my local library, but then I decided it was a perfect reference book to own.
And I bought almost the entire set of the Schaum's accounting series on the strength of my experience with this learning approach.
An excellent book - an excellent series.
Well Organized Material.......2005-11-23
Schaum's Financial Accounting is a well-written book which augmented my accounting studies.
I especially like the way the table of content is organized. The first three chapters provide an introduction to financial accounting, financial statements and the process of analyzing and recording transactions.
The next three chapters spend time on adjusting and closing entries and then on trial balance worksheets (both for service-oriented and merchandise-oriented businesses). This sets the stage for examining all major aspects of the balance sheet, which chapters 7 through 12 cover.
Following Schaums Outlines typical format, this book presents material in an easy-to-understand manner and then offers the reader with opportunities to solidify their understanding of course material through "Solved Problems" and chapter-end questions.
Shim and Siegel do a fine job of keeping material concise while discussing all major topical points.
They conclude their book with chapters covering partnerships, financial statement analysis, statement of cash flows and multinational operations.
This book merits a 3 1/2 star rating. You might consider Schaums Principles of Accounting I and II for a more thorough examination of the same topical material. However, if you wish to buy just "one book" to augment your studies, "Financial Management" would be a fine choice.
Schaum's Financial Accounting 2 Ed. .......2005-10-14
I am an accounting student. I love this book! I have bought all the Schaum's books related to Accounting. If I had to choose just one book, it would be this one. I get lost trying to follow our textbook. I open this puppy up and it has everything. I'm able to follow the explanations and examples without any problem. Trust me! You will not be disappointed. I was very impressed by how fast my books got to me. I had books coming to me within 2 days. In less than one week's time, I had all 7 books. It really is worth it. :-)
Good Investment.......2000-09-28
I bought this book to complement a senior level financial accounting course that I took. The book is concise, provides plenty of examples, and helps to solidify theories & actual practices of financial accounting. There are plenty of exercises to go through to help solidify your practical understanding of the material. I found that it was particulary useful to help me review & brush up before my tests in my financial accounting course. Overall a good investment.

Book Description
The dominant paradigm in modern-day fund management remains the Capital Asset Pricing Model (CAPM). Originally developed in the 1960s as an explanatory and predictive model of capital market behaviour, it has subsequently acquired enormous significance in many fund-management institutions.
"Harold Hutchinson's Portfolio Indexing is a long-overdue theoretical and practical perspective on the 'managers versus trackers' debate. He concludes that the indexing solution to risk management is flawed and that individual judgment will always have a proper role to play in investment. This much-needed book will hopefully help to stop the current steam-rolling move of the fund management industry towards indexing in its tracks, and encourage a more balanced view of the benefits of the active manager, especially in volatile or falling markets." Phillip Keane, Director, Industrial Bank of Japan Asset Management International Ltd
"Portfolio Indexing challenges the growing consensus in favour of portfolio indexing as the optimal investment strategy. His devastating criticisms of the theoretical foundations underlying indexing, and his plea for a more modest inductive approach to portfolio management, have huge and as yet untapped implications for the asset management industry." Dr Andrew Allan, Vice President, Salomon Smith Barney
Professionals, students and amateur investors alike will profit from this enjoyable tract on how to maintain and navigate vehicles of investment.

A high quality treatment of financial services theory.......1999-12-27
Sombody has, at last, written a clear and concise treatment on the use of the CAPM and accociated financial tools. But what really sets this book apart from the crowd is its overall readability. Hutchinson uses a clarity of language to express ideas that goes well beyond the usual linguistic treatment affoarded by most academics without entering the waters of poor grammer and management jargon of the consultancy brigade. Should you wish to work in the securities or financial services industry this book is a must buy.
Understanding CAPM.......1999-12-18
This is a great little book. I'm still struggling with the lastChapter, but Chapter 3 is the most readable account I've come across of the problems with the Capital Asset Pricing Model. For anybody that wants a clear account of CAPM, this is the book.
Book Description
Compiled by the creators and administrators of the Law School Admission Test and updated in light of information provided by the law schools themselves, The Official Guide to U.S. Law Schools 1998 covers every aspect of selecting the right school for a legal education. In addition to admission statistics, current tuition charges, financial aid opportunities, student to teacher ratio, special policies and programs, and salary and career placement statistics, it reveals such "insider" information as:
The Ivy League school that does not set rigid grade point average requirements or LSAT minimum scores
The prestigious school that is a choice for minority and women candidates--and for those interested in pursuing careers as legal scholars or teachers
The idyllic, affordable school that achieves a 95 to 100 percent employment rate for students within six months of graduation
Customer Reviews:
Was very useful at the time..........2002-01-03
...but that time was two years ago. Buy the updated version.
Great Statistical Guide.......2000-12-08
This book doesn't tell you the whole story behind each law school, but it gives valuable statistics to help you figure out where to apply. The preliminary chapters and the appendices also have some useful information.
The Absolute Law School Bible.......2000-07-06
If you want objective reviews of law schools (but only the ABA-approved law schools), this book is the ultimate Bible to them. In my opinion, in your search for a law school, you need to have this book as a reference. It describes the specialties of different schools, and the grid comparing your chances of admission against your LSAT and GPA is priceless. However, many top-ranked schools do not provide that information, so if you're hoping to determine your chances at Harvard or Columbia, guess again. You'll just have to apply to find out! It's also useful in that it provides e-mail addresses, snail mail addresses, phone numbers and websites for all of the schools. That is a handy way to request catalogs and other information.
Good background info.......2000-05-15
This was the first book I bought when I decided to apply to law school. It's a good book if you're looking for general information on a variety of law schools, but don't expect any student comments like you might see in some other books (i.e., Princeton Review's guide to the best law schools). All of the information is purely factual and is supplied by the law schools themselves. The best part of the book is the little chart where you can match up your LSAT score and GPA and find out how many people in your corresponding category were accepted or denied at a particular school. Unfortunately, many of the top law schools refuse to include such info, which tends to be very annoying. Other than that, I'd say it's a great beginners' guide for those interested in applying to law school.
Get this book for the admission indices!.......1998-08-23
Though this book will not give you the same crucial, informal advice that guides written by students will, it offers invaluable information about your chances of getting into law school. Most of the law schools in this book have included admission indices, which is a cross-referenced chart that details which students get in and which do not. By using your LSAT score and your cumulative gpa, you can tell how many people with your credentials applied to a certain law school, and how many of them got in (such as, 2/13 --2 out of 13 applicants-- or 39/39).

Book Description
She knows all about art, but does she know what she likes?
Jane Laine used to know a lot about art. But that was before she started managing a prominent gallery, and long before she met "it" artist Ian Rhys-Fitzsimmons. Jane can't seem to put a finger on what exactly is so "it" about his work. In fact, as far as she can tell, he's a big fraud and his fifteen minutes of fame should be over by now. Which could be kind of a problem-since Jane is the one who has to accompany him on a five-month international art fair tour.
To get through it all, Jane figures she'll be a good sport and keep her critiques to herself. Until, traveling with this alleged genius from London to Rome and beyond, she starts to understand the connection between art and love-and the fact that in both, perspective is everything.
Customer Reviews:
Great, easy read! .......2007-08-23
I throughly enjoyed this book! I loved the ending, it was really, really well done. :-) The only wish I had was that it would have shared a little more of that first kiss. Actually,I wanted to give it 4 and a half stars. So I am now in the process of buying her others books. Enjoy!
nearly perfect traditional romance.......2007-03-25
If Andy Warhol Had a Girlfriend is as close to a perfect example of contemporary romance as it's possible to be: a happily-ever-after fairy tale set in the modern world. Ian Rhys-Fitzsimmons is the Prince Charming, hailed as the most important young sculptor of the day. Jane Laine is the Cinderella or Snow White--working for an unappreciative boss, taking second place to her "stepsisters"--her mother's pampered miniature schnauzers.
The Good:
Jane is someone it's easy to relate to. She can take care of herself, has a decent career, but worries about the security of her job. She has friends and a quirky family--and whose family isn't a bit quirky in a certain light?--and a huge crush on Owen Wilson, for which who can blame her?
Ian starts out larger-than-life, but as the book progresses and Jane gets to know him better, he becomes more and more real. There's a very sweet moment when he tells Jane that despite all his current fame and success, in school, he too was the one not chosen, and that suddenly brings his character into vivid focus.
The Bad:
There's not a whole lot of depth to this story. Not that there's supposed to be, mind you, but if you're looking for a book to really sink your teeth into, this is not it.
The Verdict:
All in all, If Andy Warhol Had a Girlfriend is a warm, feel-good story that you won't want to put down, and that you'll want to savor on a day when you really need a pick-me-up.
Pace has a remarkable power to bestow happiness on her readers. .......2006-06-08
I had been looking for a book like this for quite some time. I loved it! It is light, funny and smart. I enjoyed traveling the world with Jane Laine and identifying with her character and her mental miniature versions of herself as she searched for true love. I highly recommend it and look forward to her next books.
Just the read I needed.......2005-09-09
Forget the fact that this book was laugh-out-loud funny, it was also a smart and engaging whirlwind tour through the art world. I especially loved when Jane went to Rome! The author clearly knew the city and I loved visiting it again through Jane's eyes. I can't wait to read Alison Pace's next book!
Adorable.......2005-09-09
This book was really cute - likeable main character, great locations around Europe, fun inside look at the art world. Jane Lane is someone you can't help but root for, and even if the story is slightly predictable with its bad break-up, nasty boss and reluctant love interest, it's still a great read. Pace has a great knack for telling a story that keeps the reader interested.
Book Description
In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as U.S. Army nurses. When the war began, some of them had so little idea of what to expect that they packed party dresses; but the reality of service quickly caught up with them, whether they waded through the water in the historic landings on North African and Normandy beaches, or worked around the clock in hospital tents on the Italian front as bombs fell all around them.
For more than half a century these women’s experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. After years of reasearch and hundreds of hours of interviews, Evelyn M. Monahan and Rosemary Neidel-Greenlee have created a dramatic narrative that at last brings to light the critical role that women played throughout the war. From the North African and Italian Campaigns to the Liberation of France and the Conquest of Germany, U.S. Army nurses rose to the demands of war on the frontlines with grit, humor, and great heroism. A long overdue work of history,
And If I Perish is also a powerful tribute to these women and their inspiring legacy.
Customer Reviews:
And If I Perish.......2007-08-18
And If I Perish: Frontline U.S. Army Nurses in World War II Wow! This is, hands down, one of the best books I have read about World War II. Not only did it give the true story of the nurses on the front lines, but wove the chronology of the war, starting in North Africa, up to the end of the war. You don't have to be a nurse to be fascinated by this outstanding history of the the war.
courageous unsung heroines.......2007-01-15
"And If I Perish" is a wonderful book! I was enthralled by the courage of these unsung heroines and had to put the book down several times when my eyes misted over & my throat became choked up.
I was surprised to read that Army Nurses jumped in the water & went ashore alongside the troops during the North Africa landings. They were under fire & died at Anzio as the field hospital was within range of German guns. Clearly-marked hospital ships were bombed in the Mediterranean and nurses survived, not one, but two such sinkings. I was shocked that the story of these front-line nurses was suppressed for so long because the government feared a "backlash" from the public.
For too long the sacrifices of this generation of brave women have been unpublished. Of the dozens of books I have read on World War II, there has been hardly a mention of the role women played except on the home front.
This book should be placed in every school library -- not only to keep the memory of the actions of these Army Nurses alive, but to provide role models for the future.
Attention! women directors & producers: There needs to be a movie about these nurses.
Should be required reading.......2007-01-13
My mother was a nurse in the 95th Evacuation Hospital, one of the units featured in this book. Though she was not interviewed, she's the nurse on the left in the photo of two nurses and a doctor in the OR. They're wearing scrubs and she's got a mask on, but it's her! I thought I knew all of her stories inside and out, but reading this book I realized how humble she was in the telling. When I read about the hospital ship being bombed and the constant shelling at Anzio, the fact that she survived amazed me. I cried when I read about the 95th's tour of duty at Dachau Concentration Camp because I couldn't -- and still can't imagine -- what it must have been like. In recent years, the focus on WWII nurses' experiences has sharpened. My mother has been interviewed for newspaper articles and the archives in D.C. I don't think women have been given nearly enough credit for service in our nations' wars, but it's about time. This book could have been called Band of Sisters. To this day, my mother is uncomfortable with the label "hero," but she's mine. To "Smitty," "VJ," "Slem," and "Wells," I salute you.
Reporting WW II nurses' sacrifice, bravery, and contributions.......2007-01-08
Mankind has insufficient understanding of what womankind has brought to the table.
Unfortunately, American culture has too often not given women the credit and reward they deserve. Monahan and Neidel-Greenlee have created an expansive chronicle of nurse (primarily women) contributions throughout the WW II fields of combat. While I do have some criticisms of the writing style and the authors' focus priorities and interpretations, my critiques are immaterial compared to the importance of more people understanding the outlines and frameworks of the massive, intelligent, and sacrificial efforts these women freely gave.
My Mom Was a WWII Nurse.......2007-01-03
My Mom was in the Army Nurse Corps in the EAME Theatre and received 4 Bronze Service Stars and 5 O/S Service bars during her military service. I was always interested to know what experiences she had, however she was reluctant to speak of those memories. After reading this book, I can understand why. "And If I Perish" is a great read to help one understand the dedication of the women of World War II and what they had to endure.
Book Description
Flexibility, specialization, and niche marketing are buzzwords in the business literature these days, yet few realize that it was these elements that helped the United States first emerge as a global manufacturing leader between the Civil War and World War I. The huge mass production-based businesses--steel, oil, and autos--have long been given sole credit for this emergence. In Endless Novelty, Philip Scranton boldly recasts the history of this vital episode in the development of American business, known as the nation's second industrial revolution, by considering the crucial impact of trades featuring specialty, not standardized, production. Scranton takes us on a grand tour through American specialty firms and districts, where, for example, we meet printers and jewelry makers in New York and Providence, furniture builders in Grand Rapids, and tool specialists in Cincinnati. Throughout he highlights the benevolent as well as the strained relationships between workers and proprietors, the lively interactions among entrepreneurs and city leaders, and the personal achievements of industrial engineers like Frederic W. Taylor.
Scranton shows that in sectors producing goods such as furniture, jewelry, machine tools, and electrical equipment, firms made goods to order or in batches, and industrial districts and networks flourished, creating millions of jobs. These enterprises relied on flexibility, skilled labor, close interactions with clients, suppliers, and rivals, and opportunistic pricing to generate profit streams. They built interfirm alliances to manage markets and fashioned specialized institutions--trade schools, industrial banks, labor bureaus, and sales consortia. In creating regional synergies and economies of scope and diversity, the approaches of these industrial firms represent the inverse of mass production.
Challenging views of company organization that have come to dominate the business world in the United States, Endless Novelty will appeal to historians, business leaders, and to anyone curious about the structure of American industry.
Customer Reviews:
Economically Exciting.......1999-12-05
I read this book several months ago for a critical essay assignment for one of my college econ. classes. Normally when I read books for reports, essays, or for anything other than entertainment, I find them to be painfully boring and longwinded. This book, however, was a pleasant surprise. The book details several companies in the Midwest and uses them to demonstrate the evolution of the American company. Scranton does an excellent job of giving examples of one or two companies in similar situations and then showing how different decisions led to good or bad results. The book seems to have emphasize the success or failure of compainies/entrepreneurs because of their own actions, as the book doesn't include much about the Civil War or major contracts. It was very easy to complete my assignment with this book, and I think it would even make for good recreational reading material.
