Customer Reviews:
some information.......2006-10-14
Like most books you do get some information. Pricing was good, but his web-site is unavailable, so who knows
Save your Money!!!.......2004-02-05
This book is awful. I have read the entire thing, and it says nothing that is useful. I have been in public accounting for 10 years, and i am now ready to start my own firm. I wasted my money on buying this book. I know it is tempting to buy, since the title is exactly what i was looking for, but trust me, choose another book. The accounting Guild website that the author constantly refers to is no longer in existence.
Accounting Not! Save your money.......2003-06-13
This book is nothing more than a template or a compilation of numerous other books that deal with marketing, prospecting, and selling. In fact the title is disingenuous. The book should be renamed to "Building, Marketing and Selling Your Business." The fact that the word Accounting appears in the title is misleading as this book could and does discuss the things necessary to starting and building any business.
The book also includes a glossary of accounting terms which is insulting. If you are an accountant purchasing this book you should already know them hands down or seek a refund from the institution of higher learning that gave you your education in accounting or ask your state accountancy board to revoke your CPA certificate.
This book is full of checklists and numerous discussions of what to do but rarely gets to "How" as the outside of the back cover states. While the information is useful it is again generic to any business and not specific to accounting.
The author bets to death the value of using Microsoft products (to the exclusion of others) and goes though a litany of the things that Microsoft uses/provides. I am certified by Microsoft in almost all the things that the author mentions in the beginning of his book and I found the authors marketing plug for Microsoft quite humorous but also very wrong. The author almost gave the impression that he is "in bed" with Microsoft and may even be a Microsoft Certified Solution Provider himself but never really states his relationship to Microsoft. This diatribe should have been in an appendix and not part of the main body of the book.
Another grating plug is the constant mention of the Accounting Guild that the author is involved with. It would have been far more professional to discuss this at length in an appendix rather than constantly marketing it to his readers by repetitive mention of it in the text. One more grate was his constant mention of the Goldmine software for tracking clients without explaining why he thinks it is the best and what is his involvement with it and more importantly why he mentions no other PIM software when he goes though a many page discussion of the various software packages available. It makes me very suspicious.
Also unless you are a firm with at least two or more accountants, two or more marketing people, two or more sales people and the accompanying support staff you are reading the wrong book. You will also have no life.
The author implicating states that unless you are dealing with businesses that are $500,000 to $10,000,000 you are not dealing with a small to medium sized business nor are you one yourself. What a grave insult to small business in general.
I am not attempting to slam the author at a personal level in my review but having read the third edition I am left with the begging question as to what was so wrong with the first two that there is in fact a third edition. After all I was the one that paid for it and I feel that I was stung and strongly so.
This book is basically a written seminar on how to build, market and sell your (any) business accompanied with numerous plugs for the authors products (at least it smells like it). The author did not follow his own advice....be honest with your clients.
I also found his web site for the Accounting Guild inactive and email is not there.
If you are looking for a book to help you build your accounting business this is not it unless you have $$$$$$ capital and staff to do so. The book is definitely not intended for the true small business person.
Save your money.
Buyer Beware!.......2003-06-05
This book is an excellent source for starting an accounting practice. It is very heavy on the aspects of technology and working that into your business to grow clients and business partners.
The caveat here is this. Mr. Fox discusses Arthur Anderson a great deal in this book when referring to ways consulting is performed and how to sell clients. In addition, he refers to his own "Accounting Guild." Unfortunately, the web site for this guild no longer exists, his Yahoo message board is inactive and he does not answer email requesting information on solvency of his own business. Although I am reading this book 3 years after it was published I find it disturbing that the book is still in print yet very out of date and no longer factually correct. i.e Offering services in the Accounting Guild.
It would be nice to at least get an explanation or have the book removed as a valid and complete source, which it no longer is.
Just what I've been looking for..........2001-08-08
Having been recently laid off, I am now looking into starting my own accounting practice. I am a CPA, but have no public accounting experience. I bought this book as part of a CPE course and was truly amazed at the wealth of information it contains, especially on marketing. It gave me some great ideas on areas to pursue and I know I will refer back to it many times over the next few months and even beyond.

Book Description
Understanding the electronic structure of solids is a basic part of theoretical investigation in physics. Application of investigative techniques requires the solid under investigation to be "periodic." However, this is not always the case. This volume addresses three classes of "non-periodic" solids currently undergoing the most study: alloys, surfaces and clusters. Understanding the electronic structure of these systems is fundamental not only for the basic science, but also constitutes a very important step in various technological aspects, such as tuning their stabilities, chemical and catalytic reactivities and magnetism. Expert practitioners give an up-to-date account of the field with enough detailed background so that even a newcomer can follow the development. The theoretical framework is discussed in addition to the present status of knowledge in the field. Electronic Structure of Alloys, Surfaces and Clusters also includes an extensive bibliography which provides a comprehensive reading list of work on the topic.
Customer Reviews:
Good book on advanced modeling subjects.......2005-07-04
This is one of the better books on the use of first-principles calculations to examine solid-state properties. The emphasis of this book is the analysis of non-periodic systems such as free surfaces, clusters, and both ordered and disordered alloys. The book is worth reading for several reasons.
1. There is good coverage of the various ab initio techniques used in electronic structure calculations: tight-binding, plane-wave psuedopotentials, LMTO, LAPW, KKR, Green's Functions, and Car - Parinello molecular dynamics. This coverage includes a thorough listing of important equations without too much math, and comparisons between different methods. The book does assume a basic knowledge of quantum mechanics, specifically operator algebra, so reader beware.
2. There are thorough definitions of the various properties that can be obtained by ab intio calculations. These include good descriptions of the density of states, cohesive energy, and configurational entropy.
3. The book is written more like a textbook than a publication of results. Each chapter focuses on a fairly narrow subject, but includes a thorough overview of the science involved, before getting into the simulation results.
4. The references given at the end of each chapter are very comprehensive, and often include other books written on materials simulations, electronic structure.
The only drawback I could find was in the chapter on recursion methods. This method is not used as often in quantum calculations, and was extremely difficult to understand.
Overall, this was a good book to read, though it is fairly expensive for 370 pages.
Book Description
Washed-up Hollywood producer Charlie Berns has mailed in his updated obit and is about to suck his Mercedes tailpipe and fade to black when a miracle materializes: his nephew, a wannabe screenwriter from New Jersey, has scripted the life story of Queen Victoria's prime minister Benjamin Disraeli, which Charlie manages to turn into a hot property that reinstates him as a player. But as the deal heats up, a few conceptual changes morph the project into Lev Disraeli: Freedom Fighter, an action thriller with a black Jewish superstar, a Yugoslavian location, a mad Polish director, and even a real-life kidnapping. Is Charlie Berns being eaten alive by the system? Or is he giving the Hollywood hotshots a run for their money? Peter Lefcourt's hilarious satire proves the old adage that in Hollywood you're never quite as dead as people give you credit for.

Customer Reviews:
A funny and literate satire.......2003-03-14
This was my first Lefcourt book. I was too cheap to buy the 11 Karens in paperback, so here I was looking at an old (1991) novel that I could buy and be happy with. As old fan of Hollywood books and novels, this ranks among the funniest I've read. It is a quick read, but more satisfying than the typical Hollywood farce. It tells you more than you wanted to know about Benjamin Disraeli. However, the satire does not get out of hand and somehow you could almost envision the plot twists actually happening in real life. The book is well written and funny as can be. I hope the reprint wins Lefcourt new fans. I'm one. The book really gets Hollywood. Bravo!
Good read.......2000-11-18
If you're looking for a fast, funny read, you will not be disappointed with The Deal. The plot is intricate, the action is non-stop, and the characters are outlandish, especially the industry's movers and shakers-the extras-that Lefcourt takes great delight in lampooning.
Orginal, lighthearted take on the strange world of Hollywood.......1999-12-22
Peter Lefcourt could've given us a savage portrayal of studios meanies. Instead he gives us a fun world of open minded, flexible studio outsiders who make anything and everything happen on the way to producing what is supposed to be a blockbuster film. You'll like the characters - they're a little sweet and goofy even though Lefcourt shows that they can be vapid. It's a lot of fun.
A very funny novel........1998-06-08
This novel will have you falling off your chair and probably lead you to read the rest of Mr. Lefcourt's output. Each of his books take you on a circuitous path to an absurd ending that is somehow made believable by some very inventive and humorous writing. I would compare his books with Michael Malone's "Handling Sin," one of the funnier books in the English language.

Book Description
No one in Vietnam had to tell door gunner and gunship crew chief Al Sever that the odds didn’t look good. He volunteered for the job well aware that hanging out of slow-moving choppers over hot LZs blazing with enemy fire was not conducive to a long life. But that wasn’t going to stop Specialist Sever.
From Da Nang to Cu Chi and the Mekong Delta, Sever spent thirty-one months in Vietnam, fighting in eleven of the war’s sixteen campaigns. Every morning when his gunship lifted off, often to the clacking and muzzle flashes of AK-47s hidden in the dawn fog, Sever knew he might not return. This raw, gritty, gut-wrenching firsthand account of American boys fighting and dying in Vietnam captures all the hell, horror, and heroism of that tragic war.

Reviews by Bob Miller-Don't miss this one!.......2007-08-10
I honestly don't like giving my fellow Vietnam warriors five stars. We've all had so many rose petals and awards placed in our paths throughout the years, I worry about overdoing it. Still, Al Sever gets five from me simply because he's a Vietnam veteran who has somehow given up drugs and killing babies long enough to write a book, a good book. Hell, I flew some 1100 hours in the war and I didn't know that, "It's a lot easier hitting small targets if the AC watches the target through the chin bubble at his feet and gives the command to drop the grenade. Leaning out the door to the left while moving forward makes it difficult to be accurate when you throw the grenade." If I ever get my hands on a helicopter and a buddy to drop the grenade, I'll remember this when we get to Washington. Sever's book, "Xin LOI, Viet Nam" is what I call an energetic, entertaining, and crisply written book. I'm Bob Miller, author of "Kill Me If You Can, You SOB" (hint).
Xin Loi, Viet Nam.......2007-08-03
Al Sever is a unique individual. In his book, he credits me by name for training him as a crewchief. He writes as if my training intensity was somehow special or above the call of duty. I didn't think of it that way. I thought of it as doing what I could to survive, and to help my brothers survive. It was frankly comforting to me to know that the crewchief in the gunship behind me knew what he was doing when he covered our tail. And he did. The only thing that he did wrong was to volunteer for a second tour in Viet Nam. And that brings me to his uniqueness. Al survived his second tour both physically and for the most part, psychologically. Most of the men who re-upped for a second tour didn't get back in one piece. I'm glad he did because he wrote a helluva book with an incredible memory for details. I honor him for his service and for his insights into the politics and sadness of that war.
Every detail is true for the period we served together in '68 and '69 flying out of Cu Chi.
Xin Loi, Viet Nam is loaded with ironies and the title carries the most. Read the book.
Xin Loi, Vietnam is a realistic view of the War. .......2007-05-12
Having served 12 months as a door gunner in 1965-1966 with the 1st Cav Div, I know a little bit about being a door gunner. This book is very realistic in what it portrays. I am amazed at the author's memory. His discriptions of everyday events are remarkably true to life. I highly recommend this book for the Veteran or anyone who wants to know how it feels to be a Veteran.
Book Description
Education of the Senses, the first book of Peter Gay's projected multi-volume study of the European and American middle classes from the 1820s to the outbreak of World War I, re-examines the sexual behavior and attitudes of Victorians.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Social/Cultural History of the Bourgeois (vol 1).......2004-10-22
Seems to me that the reviews Amazon has above do not refer to volume one of this landmark five volume history of the bourgeois. Same goes for at least one of the reviews below.
This series by Peter Gay chronicles the "Bourgeois Century", roughly 1820 to the first world war. Gay's approach is anchored by a commitment to Freudian theory and a cross-cultural approach that takes in British, French, German and American culture with equal interest.
His scholarship is careful and nuanced. He draws equally adeptly from primary and secondary materials and this volume see saws between able synthesis and novel (re) interpretations of primary sources.
As the subtitle states, this volume focuses on "the education of the senses", which is a euphimism for the process by which a young victorian (man) learns about sex. That is not to say that Gay focuses exclusively on the experience of men, far from it.
Education of the Senses begins with a general introduction that I assume applies to all five volumes. Gay is careful to explain the background of the nineteenth century: i.e. that it was a period of ferocious change and that people were greatly affected and disturbed by that change.
The subtitle of Education of the Senses is "Bourgeois Experiences, I: An Erotic Record", and that it precisely the territory covered by this volume.
First off, he discusses the diary of Mabel Loomis Todd, an east coast American bourgeois. Her story is that of the woman who marries and is unfaithful to her husband. Gay uses her experience to demonstrate that the sex life of the Victorian was more complicated then previous scholars thought (this is the overriding theme of all of his work in this area).
Gay marches through Bourgeois attitudes towards sex within marriage (i.e. women were not sexually anthesthic), the role of feminism in Victorian culture, the place of birth control and birth, the role of the medical establishment in promoting half truths about sex, the place of pornography and the place of private family life, among several other topics.
Gay is judicious in his use of Freudian theory, I found it interesting, not overwhelming or dogmatic. His writing style is fluid. First rate cultural history. Can't wait for volume two, though I probably will wait for a while...
Book Description
Lithography is a field in which advances proceed at a swift pace. This book was written to address several needs, and the revisions for the second edition were made with those original objectives in mind. Many new topics have been included in this text commensurate with the progress that has taken place during the past few years, and several subjects are discussed in more detail. This book is intended to serve as an introduction to the science of microlithography for people who are unfamiliar with the subject. Topics directly related to the tools used to manufacture integrated circuits are addressed in depth, including such topics as overlay, the stages of exposure, tools, and light sources. This text also contains numerous references for students who want to investigate particular topics in more detail, and they provide the experienced lithographer with lists of references by topic as well. It is expected that the reader of this book will have a foundation in basic physics and chemistry. No topics will require knowledge of mathematics beyond elementary calculus.
Customer Reviews:
Review of "Principles of Lithography," 2nd edition by Harry J. Levinson. .......2006-03-29
This is an excellent book for engineers, whether in photolithography or not, to acquire an overview and understanding of modern deep sub-micron photolithography and the challenges microlithographers face. It is well written and easy to read. Levinson takes you through the entire process of lithography step by step with both the mathematics involved, but also, an intuitive explanation of what the technical issues involved are. The drawings done for the figures are done well and easily understood and printed with clarity. As for photos used for figures in the book, they are also well done, and of the proper brightness and contrast so that they are easy to view and comprehensible. They are not like some books, where you wonder if the illustration was a fifth generation photocopy or just incomprehensible.
Levinson also includes a chapter on metrology. If you are producing a microlithographic pattern you need to be able to measure it, and critical dimensions in lithography are not dues ex machina.
The book has problem exercises at the end of each chapter to allow the reader to test themselves on what they have learned. I also recommend working out many of the equations as an exercise.
Levinson also doesn't neglect the historical development of the practice of lithography. There is an explanation on why early lithography tended to have high overexposure and then went to 1:1 imaging and issues driving this. Also, there is a good chapter on the claims in the 1980s that optical lithography would not get past 1 micron resolution, and why this subsequently didn't prove to be true. Levinson bravely also writes up a section on the future limits of lithography and in a few years we will see if he was right. Regardless whether he will turn out to be right or not, it is an excellent explanation of the challenges involved. I think that there is an under appreciation that of the tremendous obstacles overcome in the advancement of microlithography. It isn't an automatic step down, and we do face the prospect that maybe 65 nm or 45 nm or 32 nm or 22nm will be the end.
Next generation lithography is not neglected either and Levinson reviews the technologies and challenges for each of them.
The book is a worthy successor to David Elliot's handbook on photolithography. (Perhaps some of you will regard that as paleolithography.) It is not expensive and should be on your book shelf.
I wrote a supplementary paper in WORD for this book. I work out some of the equations in more detail than the text making it easier to understand. There are some errors in the text which I identify and provide the correction. Additionally, I added some supplementary information not in the book. If you would like a copy email me.

Book Description
The book emphasizes the role of surface effects in optical phenomena in nanoscience from two different perspectives. When systems are reduced in volume, the surface versus volume ratio increases: this translates, at the level of single nanostructures, into enhanced role of interfacial chemistry and thermodynamics, and, at the level of systems of nanostructures, into larger density on interfaces, which in turn leads to intriguing collective effects, such as plasmonics or multiple reflection and refraction phenomena. The book aims to highlight both perspectives presenting sample applications, with no claim of being exhaustive, but rather attempting to stimulate the reader in this potentially rewarding field.

Book Description
The fabrication of an integrated circuit requires a variety of physical and chemical processes to be performed on a semiconductor substrate. In general, these processes fall into three categories: film deposition, patterning, and semiconductor doping. Films of both conductors and insulators are used to connect and isolate transistors and their components.
By creating structures of these various components millions of transistors can be built and wired together to form the complex circuitry of modern microelectronic devices. Fundamental to all of these processes is lithography, i.e., the formation of three-dimensional relief images on the substrate for subsequent transfer of the pattern to the substrate.
This book presents a complete theoretical and practical treatment of the topic of lithography for both students and researchers. This sole-authored text includes optional computer simulation exercises as well as problems at the end of each chapter.

Book Description
Across the United States, people are developing new relationships with the forest ecosystems on which they depend, with a common goal of improving the health of the land and the well-being of their communities. Practitioners and supporters of what has come to be called community forestry are challenging current approaches to forest management as they seek to end the historical disfranchisement of communities and workers from forest management and the all-too-pervasive trends of long-term disinvestment in ecosystems and human communities that have undermined the health of both.
Community Forestry in the United States is an analytically rigorous and historically informed assessment of this new movement. It examines the current state of community forestry through a grounded assessment of where it stands now and where it might go in the future. The book not only clarifies the state of the movement, but also suggests a trajectory and process for its continued development.
