Outstanding Guide for Financing College and Graduate School.......2004-05-02
I have been reading guides about financing college and graduate school for over 30 years (from just shortly after my first child was born). In all that time, I failed to find a single book that provided an total overview of how to develop a strategy for financing higher education regardless of how close or how far away one was from having children in college and graduate school until Taming the Tuition Tiger came alone. I was delighted to read this book, and got several valuable ideas from it that I did not know about before (despite having finished financing three children through graduate school). That's a good thing, too, because our youngest child just accepted the college of her choice last week . . . and will start in the fall.
Developing financial resources for higher education is more complicated than ever. There are more ways to get help, but the conditions are tricky. Use one tax credit, and you lose another one. Take money from the wrong account, and you may be hit with a tax penalty.
Taming the Tuition Tiger is intended to start the ball rolling, before you read all of those excellent books about savings plans, scholarships, loans, work-study, and so forth. I would advise anyone who is a parent or grandparent of a prospective college student to read this book as soon as possible. The book will not only help you focus your attention on where you will be most successful in financing college and graduate school, the book also points you towards the excellent specialized resources that will help you implement in the areas of your choice.
A great strength of this book is that it encompasses advice for all people (grandparents, parents, step-parents, aunts and uncles, and the children themselves), in all situations (marital status, different financial circumstances, different income levels), and different durations away from higher education (from future unborn children to children about to enroll). The book is masterful is customizing its advice as simply as one possibly could!
As someone who is familiar with tax planning, I was most impressed with the many discussions of how one possible approach compares to another in economic value. Unless you have top CPA available to you who is tax savvy, this is better advice than you will probably get anywhere else.
The book also covers the whole gamut from saving money (start at a community college and transfer if it doesn't much matter where you go, or studying online), to earning money (work-study programs), to finding unusual scholarships (using online search techniques for free), to filling out the need-based financial aid applications (with samples in the book), to comparing different methods of saving and investing money before college begins.
If you don't save at least $1,000 by reading and following the advice in this book, you didn't pay attention to the material in it.
Naturally, it's best to start saving long before a child is born. But for many people that's not realistic. The book even shows you how to handle any gaps in savings with low cost loans, and ways to get parts of those loans subsidized . . . or even forgiven.
With the resources in this guide, I believe that anyone can find a way to finance a college education. So what are you waiting for?
A "user friendly" financial planning instruction resource.......2003-07-20
The costs associated with a college or university education are going up faster than the general rate of inflation and projected to do so well into the new two decades. Taming The Tuition Tiger: Getting The Money To Graduate by syndicated personal finance columnist Kathy Kristof informatively presents 529 plans for financing a college education; along with financial aid routes to pursue; information on acquiring student loans; public, private, and corporate scholarships; Uniform Gifts to Minors Act Accounts; low-income family Individual Development Accounts, and more. An excellent and thoroughly "user friendly" financial planning instruction resource, Taming The Tuition Tiger is strongly recommended reading for the families of every college-bound youth.
Whew! I'll sweat less and do more after reading this........2003-05-06
Kristoff is very clear and helpful for anyone looking at the (phenomenal and rising) costs of educating a child. We'll be using this for private school and right into college. It doesn't seem so overwhelming now that we've had some guidance to the options (and their pluses and minuses).

Book Description
In the wake of the Asian financial crisis that erupted in 1997, an intense scrutiny of the principles and standards of the world's financial system was inevitable. This new book, a major milestone in the progressive development of the new financial architecture arising from the debacle, represents the penetrating insight and practical proposals of twenty-five experts, including economists, lawyers, bankers, academics, and officials from international financial institutions. The important contributions offered here were originally presented at a series of conferences sponsored in 1999 and 2000 by the Asian Institute of International Financial Law of the University of Hong Kong in collaboration with leading law faculties from five continents. The issues boldly confronted in International Financial Sector Reform include the following: + reform of domestic securities regulation; + investment insurance and risk management; + the role of pension funds; + accounting standards; + financing real estate and construction projects; + global competitiveness in the financial sector; + responsibility of private lenders; + effective anti-money laundering measures; + protection of emerging market economies; + corporate governance; and + institutional investors. All professionals and policymakers interested in sustainable economic recovery, not only in Asia but throughout the world, will benefit enormously from these authors' fully informed and carefully formulated views. Although the new architecture they here suggest will find its most immediate application in assisting emerging markets to withstand future shocks, the nature of the interdependent world in which we now live will ensure increased global financial stability as a result of this invaluable work.

Book Description
Controlling Our Reproductive Destiny covers today's revolution in reproduction-controlling and reproduction-aiding technologies. It focuses on the ways in which science can now provide real procreative choices, while at the same time giving equal treatment to ethical, legal, and social dimensions of these advances.
Introductory chapters discuss procreative options, present an ethical and legal framework for evaluating reproduction-controlling and reproduction-aiding technologies, and describe the human reproductive system. The authors then present methods of contraception, sterilization, abortion, fertility and infertility, artificial insemination, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer, and contracted motherhood. Throughout, they provide a comprehensive discussion of the philosophical implications of new developments in these areas.

Book Description
Do you see physics as a fear-inspiring monster? Turn it into a humorous, mustachioed man in glasses with The Restaurant at the Beginning of the Universe.
The book is organized around a set of simple observational activities that stimulate student questioning. The activities encourage students to generate answers to stimulate his or her creativity. Through these observational activities, a process develops by which the students will observe, become part of the observation, formulate explanations, develop a language to discuss the ideas, formulate explanations against additional experiments, and encourage active discussions, all of which become the heart of critical analysis.
With chapters engagingly titled after sections of a menu-Appetizer, House Specialty, Side Order, Buffet, Late Night Snack, Tasty Nibble, and Dessert-The Restaurant at the Beginning of the Universe is full of activities for the home or classroom.
House Specialty Two: Length and Measurement
Objective: The distance between any two points depends on how the space in between is traversed, which may be in a straight or curved line.
Equipment: Ruler, String
Select and measure three objects easily measurable with a ruler, such as the top of a table, a book, and a straight stick, and three unusually or strangely shaped objects, such as a banana, a toy, or a crooked stick.

Good but lacking.......2005-04-02
The catalog I ordered this from says teach physics even if you've never taught it before. Well... The ideas are good, but the book needs to give more background knowledge for teachers who are less familiar with the concepts being taught. It would be helpful to have a better guide to what concepts the teacher should be directing the discussions around.

Good Romance with a Little Magic Dabbled Through.......2006-05-15
The Prankster is wreaking havoc on the towns of Pumpkin and Holly, Arizona. During Halloween, instead of the signs in Pumpkin saying `Happy Halloween' they would say `Seasons Greetings' or `Merry Christmas.' In Holly at Christmas the Santa Clauses would be replaced by scarecrows.
Someone needed to find out who this Prankster was and do something about him. Father Bean the pastor of Between the Towns Gospel Church, decided that one person from Pumpkin and one from Holly would sort it out. He picked Sheriff Nicholas Dugan from Holly and Avalon Lynch from Pumpkin.
It seemed that many years ago the two towns were one called Blessing. There was a terrible flu epidemic and one side of town blamed the other for the deaths. Several women who looked after the sick were named as witches and killed. But before their death the sickness passed from the town. From that day forward they split to two towns.
The people of Pumpkin blamed Henri Dugan for the death of their ancestors, while the people of Holly blamed the Dugan curse on the witches of Pumpkin. There was a lot for both Lonnie and Nick to get over in order to work together. But work together they did. Through near accidents, spells and potions they found who the Prankster was and reunited the two towns and families.
This delightful book is for anyone who loves a good romance with a little magic dabbled through. It's also a book that you will not want to put down until you get to the end. "Some Enchanted Autumn" is a thoroughly enjoyable book with witty characters and vivid descriptions. Ms. Andrews did a superb job.
A cute and funny paranormal romance.......2006-02-11

Avalon "Lonnie" Lynch wants nothing more than to leave her heritage behind. She doesn't want to be a witch, but sometimes fate will have its way no matter what. When she comes home to Pumpkin to celebrate Halloween, a prankster is on the loose. Someone wants to ruin the holiday and it can only be a person from their rival town of Holly.
Nicholas "The Dugan" Dugan is sent from his home town of Holly over to Pumpkin to investigate all the mysterious incidents occurring. When a skeleton literally falls on top of him, things really get interesting. Of course, it has absolutely nothing to do with the gorgeous Lonnie to whom he is bound by a magic spell until the mystery is resolved. Or does it? Will their families' histories, which caused the rivalry between the towns, get in the way of their true love found?
Some Enchanted Autumn by Linda Andrews is an all around cute, funny, feel-good kind of story. The characters are quirky and the storyline engaging. This reviewer especially loved the terminology used as expletives in the story. Who can resist someone whose favorite expression when they are frustrated is "Cracked Cauldrons!" or "Sugar Cookies?" Readers will chuckle several times over the antics of the townspeople.
Lonnie and Nick are perfect for each other, as much as they dislike each other in the beginning. How they overcome their doubts about one another is sure to delight readers. The supporting cast is bubbling with fun. The fear of Pumpkin's residents of "The Dugan," their version of the boogeyman is amusing, as is the grudging respect they give him in the end. However, two characters in particular, who happen to be skeletons, will steal the show every time they make an appearance. One comes to look forward to their scenes, just waiting to see what kind of mischief they'll get in to next.
Some Enchanted Autumn is, to put it simply... enchanting! This reviewer now intends to get a copy of The Christmas Village, so as to spend more time in this delightful world.

Some Enchanted Autumn - Review.......2006-01-14
Some Enchanted Autumn by Linda Andrews is an excellent gift idea for the Halloween season. Vampires, skeletons, spiders, witches... they are all here - but this is definitely not a children's book.
One town, founded by the same wagon train during the pioneering days of the North American continent, holds a secret that could destroy them all.
Divided by a bitter and ancient rift, it becomes two rival towns - Pumpkin and Holly. These folks take their holidays seriously, but none more so than Pumpkin's residents do.
Lonnie, who is running both from herself and from facing her pompous and boring boyfriend, returns to Pumpkin - her hometown. There she meets Nicholas who is both more wonderful than her wildest dreams and as frightening as her childhood nightmares. Together they are assigned the difficult task of discovering the "Prankster's" identity and the reason's why that person is set on keeping the ancient rift between the towns alive.
Nicholas and Lonnie harbor a steamy and slightly erotic passion for one another, which they do their best to keep in check. Their family ancestors, after all, were the main players in the rift that continues to tear the towns apart.
I would classify Some Enchanted Autumn as a fantasy-fiction, paranormal-romance novel with comedic elements. Although it begins with a bit of confusion, the story rises in pace until I felt unwilling to put the book aside. This 238-page book is not the author's first endeavor. In fact, Linda has written two other books, The Christmas Village and Ghost of a Chance.

Book Description
The companion volume to Stars in Their Courses, this marvelous account of Grant's siege of the Mississippi port of Vicksburg continues Foote's narrative of the great battles of the Civil War--culled from his massive three-volume history--recounting a campaign which Lincoln called "one of the most brilliant in the world."
Customer Reviews:
Vicksburg and the Rise of U.S. Grant.......2006-01-22
"The Beleaguered City" is an extended excerpt on the Vicksburg Campaign from Shelby Foote's absolutely superb three volume narrative history of the Civil War. The Vicksburg Campaign is a gripping story in its own right, the central dramatic thread of which is Union General U.S. Grant's struggle to capture the great Confederate citadel on the Mississippi.
Grant, stubborn and taciturn, will try a variety of methods to close with and subdue the Confederate forces defending Vicksburg. His initial approaches fail, sometimes spectacularly, and it is only when Grant takes the great risk of cutting loose from his own supply lines to cross the Mississippi river and place his own army between two Confederate forces that he is finally able to place the city under siege. The Vicksburg campaign marks the coming of age of Grant as a mature senior leader, the kind of general who can plan, fight and win campaigns at the operational and strategic level. His success at Vicksburg will lead directly to his summons by Lincoln to lead all Union armies.
This book is highly recommended to the student of the Civil War and to the casual reader looking for an absolutely page-turning account of the Civil War meant to be read as literature.
An Intimate Study of a Crucial Campaign.......2005-01-06
As the country experiences the greatest philosophical and political division since the Civil War, I return to study the very bloody war that defined America as a nation. The best way to study this war is through the excellent narrative of Shelby Foote, featured in the acclaimed Civil War documentary by Ken Burns.
Shelby Foote has written infinite volumes about the civil war. However, I wasn't ready to immerse myself into those thick encyclopedia-looking things. Instead, I tried to ease myself with The Beleaguered City, which is an excerpt from these volumes. And it was an excellent choice.
This book, gave me an intimate account of what the seventeen-month campaign was like. From the infinite marches, to the bloody battles, the constant skirmishes, the digging of the trenches, was visualized in front of my eyes to the realization that this was one of the bloodiest campaigns the humanity has ever known.
Foote does a great job with the character development as well. From the worried, on the edge, ready to be labeled a scapegoat Grant, he evolves to the "Unconditional Surrender" Grant. The opposite happens with the Confederate generals, as they go from overly confident winners, to being slaughtered battle after battle.
Vicksburg is the turning point of the Civil War, and Shelby Foote is the present day authority on this war. If you want to really understand what happened during this campaign this is the book to buy. The excellent prose, and wealth of details will make it a fascinating read.
Vicksburg: The Cliff Notes.......2004-10-29
This is the same type of feel-good no-footnotes-it-just-crowds-the-page pseudo-history for which fiction writer Shelby Foote is famed. Others have written three volume sets on the Vicksburg Campaign (Bearss), but Shelby Foote seems comfortable boiling it down into a novella. It makes for a nice quick read, but others wishing to get their hands dirty with some real history should opt for Bearss, Grabau (98 Days), Winschel, or Timothy B. Smith (Champion Hill).
History at its' best.......2003-02-15
This is, without a doubt, the best book on the seige of Vicksburg that maybe was ever written. Never have I gotten more insight into the heart of Grant as well as a blow by blow description of the problems that befell this Union Army in undertaking what some have called an impossible victory.
Very informative! Just how did Grant take Vicksburg?.......2002-04-12
For some it may be unclear just how Grant finally took the city of Vicksburg and who to tell it wisely but Shelby Foote! Shelby Foote is probably one of the best authors of the Civil War around and it is certainly easy to understand why in this very informative book! Foote carefully explains all engagements in and around Vicksburg that eventually come to light towards the finish. Every event is descriptively written covering many naval strategies along the Mississippi, Yazoo and other rivers which were of importance to naval affairs of each opposing side. Grants struggles to capture the city are indeed covered by many in depth chapters which cover the naval and land assaults. Also to help build the story, strategic moves in and around the city by Sherman and other generals make it easy to understand the Union grip upon Pemberton towards the end. Another interesting part of this book was about Grant's personal dealings with daily life and how alcohol was a problem. Besides just mentioning movements and battles in this book, condition of troops, officers and citizens of Vicksburg is also presented well. Pemberton's decisions towards the end to surrender easily give the reader a true sense of desparation upon the part of Pemberton to seek help from Johnston for most of the seige which never came. Such writing makes it clear of Pemberton's motives to defend yet finally surrender the city to Union forces as a the stranglehold is built up from the start of the book and to the end!

up to 4 stars for the charts.......2004-09-14
This review book contains interesting tidbits that others don't have. It also features good overviews that hit the essentials and a large number of terrific comparative charts. This book makes connections among different civilizations, time periods, topics, and themes. In fact, it's possibly the best book for making connections and drawing conclusions.
For lots of details or facts, you'll need something else, too.
Better than Barron's, Not as good as Princeton Review.......2004-02-24
The title of this review sums it up. Petersen's APWH study guide is just "OK" for AP World History. It's a good source for ideas for multiple choice questions. I've used Petersen's, Barron's and Princeton Review with my students--hands down winner is PR's "Cracking the APWH Exam", In My Humble Opinion.
Customer Reviews:
Not very helpful........2005-08-12
Last spring I took 6 AP exams, for the most part I used Princeton Review exclusively. I used REA for American History (which is very good by the way), and purchased this book off of Amazon. I am sorry to say that I found this book all but useless. The chart layout would likely only help someone enabled with a photographic memory. Perhaps if you already know the subject very well, it could work as a review. However, if you are like me, and never took the class (and lacks a photographic memory), you will discover this book is not helpful, a waste of time and money. This was to such an extent that I went out to the store and bought the Princeton Review book for full price the week before rather than deal with the mediocre Petterson's. Another note on that, the Princeton Review World History is likely the worst Princeton Review AP prep book I have used, thus I wouldn't really recommend that. Try Jackson J. Spielvogel's world history text or Peter N. Stearns "Advance Placement Edition." Both are very informative as well as good reads. Furthermore, Stearns has great internet resources that are almost as proficient as the text itself. Good luck.
A test prep that is great for what it does not contain!!!.......2002-07-25
AP Success World History contains a great deal of pertinent information regarding the three topics that the College Board emphasizes. Instead of helping me learn hundreds of useless facts, the book aided me by clearly explaining the main topics included on the AP exam, topics including, but not limited to, "how cultures change over time" and "how cultures interact with one another." Once again, as most of the AP World History Exam deals with general trends and not specific facts, AP Success: World History is the right choice for preparation; and since it is not a very long book, last minute studying is more plausible with this book than perhaps any other. I should also point out here that taking the practice tests and STUDYING the SOLUTIONS for the tests is critical to success. By quickly reviewing the book and taking and STUDYING the practice test questions and SOLUTIONS, confidently earned a 4 on the actual AP EXAM with only 2 night's worth of study (90 mintutes of study on night 1 and 3 hours of study on night 2).
If you seriously want to do well on this examination and you have had little, poor quality, or no preparation for AP World History, then buying this book and using it will give you a very good chance of getting a 4. If you want a 5 you might need a little more preparation. Getting a 3 should be no problem.
First Study Guide for AP World History!.......2001-12-27
The first AP World History exam will be given in 2002, and this Peterson volume is the first study guide to become available. Whatever its flaws, it will be welcomed by many teachers and students who are pioneering this new AP course in its first year. What follows is a first impression by an AP World History teacher who occasionally moonlights as a College Board Consultant for AP World History.
Like other Peterson guides, this one begins with a diagnostic test, and the remainder of the book follows the typical pattern for AP study guides: a first half on test taking strategies (Chapters 1-5), and a second half on content review (Chapters 6-10). As a teacher, what I liked most about the study guide were the practice tests and the tables that organized and summarized content. What I liked least were the chapters on test-taking strategies, which seemed to lack the sophistication needed for students to excel on the written portions of the test. However, to be fair, 'your mileage may vary' depending on your grade level and level of AP experience. If you are a high school sophomore - as many students taking this course are - and you have very little or no experience taking AP exams, the study guide is very accessible and covers the basics in a simple, straightforward way. On the other hand, if you are a senior with lots of AP experience and are hoping to score a 5, I suspect you're going to be disappointed - but you should still find the practice tests moderately useful.
The study guide provides students with a course outline straight from what teachers recognize as 'the Acorn book,' and it obviously relies heavily on this source as a guide to the information it covers. Practice essays and DBQ topics are taken directly, if not stolen outright, from the Acorn book, and they are accompanied by rubrics that consist of elaborate (brainstorming) lists and tables. Oddly, the study guide does not provide students with a detailed explanation of the rubric that AP readers use in evaluating essays, i.e., what is specifically required for an outstanding essay. Nor do the DBQ chapter or rubrics adequately address issues of context, frame of reference, and perspective, i.e., 'Habits of Mind.'
Teachers and students should be advised that they may find a few of the multiple choice test questions and answers problematic (but what else is new?). The authors have also not quite mastered the technique of providing options within their essay questions, and they appear to prefer to use a minimum number of moderately long documents rather than a maximum number of short documents for their DBQs. Overall though, I consider the practice tests to be the most valuable part of the study guide. The multiple choice practice exams are not nearly as obsessive about factual details as most of the textbook-based exams that many teachers are using in their classes. Of course, we can only hope that the authors guessed right about the level of difficulty of the AP exam. (I suspect the practice tests are a bit too easy.) We won't really know until May.
(By the way, the study guide is 350 pages, not 500.)
