These series of books have a lot to offer.They offer more advice,easier explanations and affordable than most books.They're good value.

not really worth the money.......2007-01-14

I was surprised to see that this edition is still in circulation. Much better notary journals have been made available over the past 20 years, and for a lot less money. I recently purchased the Modern Journal of Notarial Events through Notary Rotary for a fraction of the cost. It's one that I would recommend over this journal.

A good book!.......2006-03-11

British mystery writer Simon Bret takes the mystery out of post-menopausal sex in his new novel, The Penultimate Chance Saloon.

Bill Stratton is about to reach the birthday milestone of sixty. He's happy with his semi-retired life until his wife of forty years, Andrea, tells him that their marriage has been a sham since the week after their honeymoon--and promptly files for divorce. Stunned, Bill must now re-examine his life and their marriage.

He hadn't had much experience in dating or sex before Andrea, but now that he find himself single, he starts to look at women in a different way. But more important, they are looking at him in a different way.

After achieving some modest fame as one of London's television newsreaders (the American equivalent to a news anchor), Bill's not unknown around town. To help break him out of his funk, his agent Sal begins the pressure to hit the after-dinner speaker circuit. He agrees, tentatively at first, because it beats spending evenings in The Annex listening to his best friend Trevor rant about his ex-wives and erectile dysfunction. Soon, Bill is out almost every night and having sex, well, more often than he ever did with Andrea.

Bill to pleased to discover that he doesn't need Viagra, but is shocked at how easily getting a woman into bed is. He's even more shocked that most only want one-night stands. In fact, most of the women he beds doesn't even want him to spend the night!

Sex, which Bill soon learns is not dating, at sixty is something completely mind-boggling and nothing like Bill ever thought it would be. The Penultimate Chance Saloon is more funny than not, but sad because it is all too true. The older women get, the better a man looks if he has even a shimmer of his once good looks and is in good health. Women don't fight over Bill in this novel, but the author makes the point that women over a certain age are out to please themselves and not the guy lying next to her.

Armchair Interviews says: Sounds like people over a "certain age" should be lining up for this book.

The first part covers 1914 to 1916 when Churchill was First Lord of the Admiralty. This is an apologia for Churchill's actions, especially the Dardanelles and Gallipoli campaigns. It's quite self-serving, for instance Churchill expressed surprise when Jackie Fisher resigned as First Sea Lord. If Churchill was surprised, he was in the minority, considering how loudly Fisher objected to the Dardanelles fiasco.

After Churchill was forced out of office and became a lieutenant colonel in the Royal Scots Fusiliers, the book was no longer written in the first person. It became a thought-provoking commentary on the last two years of the war. Churchill no longer had to justify his actions, and wrote an intelligent, knowledgeable discussion on the war. This second part of the book is well worth reading.

don't be mislead - this is abridged.......2007-06-21

I would love to read Churchill's World Crisis - but only in the original set. This is a condensed version, and reading it would be like reading an abridgment of Gibbon. If anyone knows where I can get the complete text, please send me a message and let me know.

Churchill's Brief for the Defendant.......2007-04-29

Churchill is certainly one of the master wordsmiths of the Twentieth Century. Few men could match his prose. In this book, his prose is powerful, concise, florid, and beautiful. Many dry historians could certainly learn a great deal from reading Churchill. After reading a book like this, one could see a great deal of Homer in Churchill. A wonderfully written book.

That being said, Churchill was an author that was far too close to his subject. As First Lord of the Admiralty during the first couple of years of the First World War, Churchill made decisions that have remained controversial to this very day. In far too many places in this book, Churchill uses his wonderful ability with words to defend his actions, such as his decisions regarding the Dardanelles and Gallipoli. Reading this book, one would think the First Lord of the Admiralty from 1911 to 1915 was a near faultless man surrounded by people that made minor to major errors.

While this book is beautifully written, in more than a few places, it becomes Churchill's defense of his own actions during the war. Churchill's objectivity is sorely lacking at these times.

Another intimate view of History.......2007-02-19

I have read many of Sir Winston's many writings, and aftercoming across the fact that a World War One hitorical commentary by Sir Winston was extant, I proceeded to aquire the same for my library, and found it was a perfect addition to my collection. It brings to life the various members of the British Government and traces the attempts to attain a peaceful solution to the growing problems, were being rebuffed by the local interests of other countries, eventually leading to WW I, many due to diplomatic miscalculation, and errors in judgement of some national leaders. Altho, it is a bit biased in favor of the strategy proposed as First Lord of the Admiralty, (which was tried in a half-hearted manner by others of the War Council). Mr Churchill definately put the British navy on a superior war footing for the conflict. The handling of the land war was excellent, showing how a misquided leadership actually threw away countless lives with their futile stratigies. This book takes us into the midst of the War leadership on the diplomatic as well as strategic fronts. A very worth-while read for an student of recent history.

Tough but profitable.......2006-11-05

This is a good hard book to read. It is long and sometimes too deep and I think Sir Winston takes sometimes too much detail in his own experience. But I think is a really good way of knowing how was the Great War from the inside of British Impire politics...and from the overwhelming point of view of probably de biggest personality of Britain in the hole 20th Century.

I really missed the last part of the original volumes: The Aftermath. It is really difficult to find it and there are only old editions which are really expensive (100$ or more)

A good book, but could be more complete.......2003-07-09

This is one of the few books, if not the only one, on Egyptian Jews that mention the detention camps of Abu Zaabal and Tura.
I knew a person who was one of about 400 to 500 Jews interned in Egypt during the Six Day War for up to 3 years. He stayed 3 years and 15 days between 1967 and 1970. He was tortured: ordered to walk on broken glass, beaten on the head repeatedly. Some of the younger inmates were raped.

The book has a lot of details about property sequestration, and the dispossession of Egyptian Jewry. The author seems to be detail oriented. However he did not detail our suffering and torture in Abu Zaabal and Tura.
The author is a little bit dry, but that preference is a drawback, since as a result, he may have avoided talking about torture. I encourage him to go with a second edition, but before he does that, he should talk to the Abu Zaabal and Tura internees.

Not just hot air.......2007-09-17

I enjoyed this book very much. This topic was new to me and I found the book quite easy to understand. De Villiers also told the story of wind well, the sequence of information was very good and promoted understanding. Some issues can be contentious, such as global warming and alternate energy supplies. I found de Villiers to be brutally honest, giving the pros and cons of each side. There were certain weaknesses in the book however, that interfered with my enjoyment. A discussion of the various winds and their locations was complex and the one map in the book was inadequate in helping me understand. Additionally, the author recounted some personal anecdotes which added to neither the understanding nor the warmth of the book. And finally, the editing was very weak: there were many run-on sentences which hampered readability. At many places in the book, the English was just of inadequate quality, e.g., use of the word "astonishments" as a noun. This distracted from the reading experience as I had to decipher the writing before I could decipher the science. Overall, this book was a good addition to my library of science non-fiction and was worthwhile reading.

As another reviewer wrote, I too would suggest you look elsewhere for an introduction to weather, probably by a meterologist. Villiers isn't really that strong on science and a few howlers have crept into the book that rather show it (p. 44 mentions -1000 degrees C!). Otherwise, it's a bit of a tedious fact dump rather than a synthesis of a wide acquaintanceship with the subject matter. I gave up after a hundred pages.

Generous at three stars........2006-11-14

Long on appendix and on anti-God, pro-environmentalist boilerplate, and short on real substance, this book is not the best value for someone wanting to truly advance his knowledge of wind and weather. Granted there are many interesting ancedotes, and the author will deepen your knowledge of the latest advances in the science of understanding and predicting weather. But pound for pound, you don't get all that much. This kind of book keeps a publishers press running and pays the authors mortgage (on his oceanfront home). I would look for better value elsewhere if I were you.
