Book Description
More personal finance than home improvement, this book will teach readers the art of finding the right kinds of homes to purchase; how to determine what kinds of repairs will translate into high returns; how to work with contractors or subcontractors to get the work done; and how to sell properties for a profit.

ACHIEVES ITS AIM - INTRODUCTION.......2006-02-12
This book achieves what it sets out to do: provide a simple introduction to the topic of real estate fixer-uppers and give the beginner a guidemap of a first deal.
It walks the potential investor through the main steps, from finding and choosing a house, to inspecting it, to purchasing it, to doing the basic fixes, to putting it in the market for sale. Being a "Complete Idiots Guide", one knows what to expect, and this book does exactly what it sets out to do. It is particularly useful in giving small tips that would likely only be known by someone with much experience that has fallen into many traps.

Book Description
This book brings together specialists from different areas (governance, regulation, macro-econometrics, micro-econometrics, enterprise culture, foreign direct investment, technology transfer) to focus on the many different aspects of the privatization process in transition economies. The book does not dwell on the administrative or procedural aspects of privatization. Instead it attempts to understand the bigger picture in terms of underlying policy environment and supporting legal and economic measures which helped to a large extent to determine the eventual success or failure of privatization programs.

Book Description
This book is the first unified and in-depth assessment of the issues raised in private international law by the law of restitution, and includes coverage of restitutionary choice of law issues, such as subrogation, constructive trusts and claims for contribution. The unity and importance of the law of restitution in English domestic law is being increasingly recognised by academics, practitioners, and most importantly the courts. In recent years there have been a significant number of cases dealing with unjustified enrichment in private international law, including Baring Bros v Cunninghame D.C., and Re Polly Peck International plc. The focus of the book is on difficulties which might arise in practice, and it aims to assist practitioners dealing with issues which have not previously been treated at length: for example, in the case of money laundering, giving guidance to a commercial practitioner on which laws apply to a plaintiff's attempt to follow and trace the value of his money through a number of jurisdictions. The primary concern of the book is English private international law, however the domestic law of unjustified enrichment in other states is discussed in order to consider the problems conflicts between domestic laws can create. The jurisdictional and choice of law rules of other systems are also analysed in comparison with English law.

Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) is an analytical tool used by chemists and physicists to study the structure and dynamics of molecules. In recent years, no other technique has grown to such importance as NMR spectroscopy. It is used in all branches of science where precise structural determination is required and where the nature of interactions and reactions in solution is being studied.
Annual Reports on NMR Spectroscopy has established itself as a means for the specialist and nonspecialist alike to become familiar with new applications of NMR spectroscopy in all branches of chemistry.
Volume 48 carried on the tradition with contributions on: dynamics of polymers from one- and two- dimensional solid state NMR spectroscopy; NMR spectroscopy of large proteins; accurate diagnosis and prognosis of human cancers by protein MRS and a three stage classification strategy; NMR determination of porous media property distributions; and NMR studies of micelles.
Book Description
Morton Martin Spell -- a once-brilliant, now-infirm seventy-five-year-old writer -- is sliding into delirium. He thinks Mount Sinai Hospital is an exclusive golf course and his catheter is a gym bag. His only link to reality is his thirty-five-year-old nephew, who makes his living as a hired gun for thirteen softball teams and still goes by the name College Boy.
But College Boy's body has begun to betray him -- almost as much as his lack of ambition. (His only legitimate paycheck comes from a gig as a laugher on a morning radio show.) Not only that, the Dirt King, a small-time gangster who controls all the replacement soil in Central Park, is after College Boy. As their lives collide, College Boy takes refuge in the arms of Sheila -- his uncle's cleaning woman and a part-time call girl.
And then it gets weird.

Big Let Down.......2005-11-24
Being a sports fan I thought I might find this interesting and funny. Boy was I wrong. Not only was it not funny but it was boring. The characters did not intrigue me they just seemed to hard to believe and the plot was even more foolish. Dont waste your time or money on this one.
The Ringer Worm.......2004-11-09
Bill Scheft is a funny man. Just ask him. Or listen to him.
But asking Scheft to write a novel is like asking Shemp to do Shakespeare, you just don't do it.
Don't mistake it. Scheft knows sports, humor, and has a wealth of lifetime experiences. I also must be his target reader: White, middle aged, college educated, sports fanatic, borderline alcoholic. But the one dimensional characters, distracted dialogue, and shallow plot lines, make one trifecta no one should bet.
The humor comes off like an inside joke that you aren't party to, there isn't enough sex to make it interesting, and you end up hoping the characters die before you do -- of boredom.
The novel went from 'can't put down', to 'won't pick up'.
I suggest you don't either.
Lightweight TV series.......2004-03-02
OK, I was sucked in. I read all the endosements. And I thought this would be a good book.
As it turns out the endorsments are from fellow show-biz people.
I shudda known.
This book would make a good TV series.
It is lightweight and the characters are shallow and unimaganative.
A 35 year old who thinks he is still in school is not cute, it is ill.
And his uncle who thinks he is a sliver tounged wise-cracker, but is an Ivy-league bore.
Oh yes the cleaning Lady, Lady? Yeah who am I to judge?
She's just running from life, so be a hooker!
And the so-called jokes in this book, bland, but I do wish I was half as clever as the author thinks he is.
Later,
Out
Don't wait for the movie!.......2003-08-31
I read a couple of books a month, most of them off suggestions from friends. This was recommended to me by the saleswoman at my local bookstore. Either she and I have the exact same taste or she is clairvoyant. Trememendous characters, a surprise ending and at least two out-loud laughs on every page. If they make this into a movie (which they should!), I hope they don't screw it up.
Publishers Weekly has it right.......2003-08-26
A stinker of a book, I finished it only because of the many favorable reviews on this site. I laughed 2 or 3 times in 256 pages, or for you mathematicians, 0.01 laughs per page. It has no character development, a weak, boring, and confused plot, unauthentic and uninteresting dialogue, and countless unfunny one-liners. Over-all, it is a downer like the Valium the protagonist is addicted to. Scheft wrote that Letterman made him much funnier than he made Letterman, and if you bother to read this book you'll agree with him in spades.
Product Description
From the Publisher "Philadelphia lawyer Bennie Rosato has her eye focused firmly on the bottom line, especially since she has three dedicated young associates and a very pregnant secretary on her payroll, and she takes a professional risk, charging into a class action lawsuit that could make - or break - her career. Never mind that she's never handled anything like this before. Having won nearly every civil and criminal case she's ever tried, the brillant and unconventional Bennie has the guts, and she'll do what it takes to succeed. Even if that means wearing pantyhose and putting herself on a curse diet." "Then her wallet goes missing. And Bennie's life goes crazy." "It's not just that one of her associates has dyed her hair pink. Or that another's old-world Italian mother gives Bennie the evil eye. But someone posing as the outspoken, blue-eyed, blond attorney is wreaking havoc around town, apparently determined to destroy everything Bennie loves. Only one person can pull off this double deception - Bennie's identical twin sister, Alice Connelly. But as far as Bennie knows, Alice left Philly long ago and never looked back." When events escalate into murder, the maverick lawyer realizes that the stakes are far greater then she feared. But Bennie Rosato refuses to be anyone's victim. To find the killer, she'll plunge headfirst into a life-and-death investigation that will bring her face-to-face with evil darker yet more familiar than anything before

Been there, Knew Minnie.......2000-11-23
Ringer has a way with descriptions, and although some things are incredibly fanciful and a product of a hyped-up mind (the space shuttle comes to mind), others are essentially Minnie as He is.
The opening sequence is a great introduction to this "Jewish Hippie Boy from New Jersey". Obviously most of this story is fiction, but much of it has a basis in fact - it's up to you to figure out how much you want to believe.
This book is great as a beach read, as long as you can suspend your belief and groove to the music...
Very Disappointing.......2000-07-04
I was looking forward to a fun quick read---WRONG. It was just too unbelievable for me. This one was better left on the 50% off table where I found it.

good hearted humor for soulful deadheads

A fun read to take the Deadhead through familiar places and trippy adventures.
Book Description
This title examines the development of the Colonial Rangers in this period, and shows how they were taught to survive in the woods, to fight hand-to-hand, to scalp a fallen foe, and to fight across all types of terrain and in all weather conditions. Based on previously unpublished source material, it paints a vivid picture of the life, appearance and experiences of an American colonial ranger in the northern colonies. Covering the battle at Lovewell's Pond in 1725, a watershed event in New England’s frontier history, through to King George's War (1740-1748), the rangers were prepared for the final imperial contest for control of North America, the French-Indian War (1754-1763).
Customer Reviews:
One of the best.........2007-03-05
This is easily one of Osprey's best titles in the Warrior series. Not only the usual color prints but several of the authors own drawings. It mixes facts with folklore which makes this title very informative. A must read for French and Indian war studies!
Outstanding, with a few caveats.......2005-10-24
There has been occasional grumbling from Osprey series authors about the limits of the format in the various Osprey series ( Men-at-Arms, Warrior, etc.). Within the 64 page limit for the Warrior series this is a fine reference work. However, it is not an exhaustive study of all Ranger units operating in the time period and geographic region indicated. Mr. Zaboly is clearly an expert in the Ranger units associated with Robert Rogers. But there is very little mention of other Ranger units that existed in the same place and time. The activities of Roger's units are illustrative of most aspects of Ranger operations though. Roger's Rangers exploits are generally acknowledged to represent the pinnacle of Ranger achievements at the time. There are stirring tales of struggle in accomplishing epic raids deep into enemy territory here. There is also no shying away from Ranger participation in the grislier aspects of frontier warfare. Overall, Mr. Zaboly's historical text is informative, substantive and fully informed by many first-hand source documents.
What sets this study apart from other Osprey Warrior series titles though are the illustrations. Mr. Zaboly is an accomplished artist who has illustrated his own work. The numerous drawings by the author that populate this book are vivid illustrations of the way Rangers dressed, encamped, fought and survived in the Eastern wilderness. These outstanding drawings make the modest price of this publication a real bargain. As long as the reader is not dismayed by a tight focus on Roger's Ranger units, this title will not disappoint.
glorious.......2005-04-11
One of my uncles served in the Rangers during world war two, faught in Anzio. My father served in the Rangers in Korea. He idolized Robert Rogers. His favorite novel was North West Passage, and was just as fond of the movie. And if either were alive today, I would send them this book.
This is the best book on the Colonial Rangers I have yet found. though Sketch Book 56 volume one Rogers'Rangers by Ted Spring is a good second. Very informative. Well illustrated. Straight to the point. Each of its sixty three pages is solid information gold.
For those with a desire to know more about this subject this is The Book to get.
It is probably the best book produced by Osprey.
Definitive, Vivid, and an Instant Classic.......2004-11-27
The quality of Osprey's illustrated military histories varies widely. Some volumes are produced by qualified authorities who know their respective subjects inside and out. Others are shoddy rush jobs put out by hacks. Gray Zaboly's _American Colonial Ranger: The Northern Colonies 1724-64_ deserves to be ranked among Osprey's best. Indeed, it is unexcelled by any volume that Osprey has put out in the past thirty years.
_American Colonial Ranger_ is the result of decades of intensive research. Zaboly is universally acknowledged as one of the leading interpreters of the history, dress, weapons, and equipment of Rogers' Rangers and the other ranger units raised in the North American colonies to battle the French and their Indian allies. His mastery of a wide array of sources is evident from the text, which is as well written as it is authoritative. Zaboly is not only a skilled wordsmith, but he is also a leading historical artist, and his superbly rendered color plates make this book a feast for the eyes. In too many books of this type, the plates resemble groups of mannequins modeling various uniforms. In _American Colonial Ranger_, six of Zaboly's plates are painted scenes that capture important moments in ranger history -- as well as giving the reader a good view of what these remarkable frontier soldiers wore and carried.
With _American Colonial Ranger_, Osprey has set a new standard for itself and its competitors. It can only be hoped that it will commission Zaboly to turn out more titles as outstanding as this one.
Book Description
The Lumbee Indians of North Carolina, although the fifth largest Indian group in the United States, have had a history of difficulty in convincing others of their Indian identity. Like other â~neglectedâ Eastern Indian groups, they lack treaties, reservations and a continuous record of settlement, and apparently have not practised â~traditional Indian waysâ for over two hundred years. This raises questions of how their distinctiveness is formulated and maintained. Using material derived from fieldwork among the Lumbee, Professor Blu argues that deeply-felt notions about their group identity have played a major role in shaping and guiding their political activities for over a century, and shows that they have been remarkably successful in achieving their goals. She traces the changing relationships of the Lumbee with their black and white neighbours in this period, and shows that they have been remarkably successful in achieving their goals. In carving out a third niche for themselves in a biracial system, the Lumbee have demonstrated that the Southern racial structure has been more flexible and complicated than has often been suggested.
Book Description
Popular account ranges from counting to mathematical logic and covers the many mathematical concepts that relate to infinity: graphic representation of functions; pairings and other combinations; prime numbers; logarithms and circular functions; formulas, analytical geometry; infinite lines, complex numbers, expansion in the power series; metamathematics; more. 216 illustrations.
Customer Reviews:
Sweet!.......2004-10-10
Prof. Peter (whose book on recursive functions is considered a classic among computer scientists) introduces the reader to the beauty that is mathematics by breaking down concepts that might appear intimidating to the neophyte. This charmingly written book takes readers by the hand and explains areas of mathematics that deal with the concept of infinity in a friendly, non-condescending manner, commencing with basic arithmetic and eventually progressing to logic and set theory and the works of Cantor, Hilbert, and Russell. A good introduction to mathematical principles for those looking to get their feet wet, Playing with Infinity is also fun for the more mathematically seasoned reader. Many thanks to Dover for keeping such books available and at such a reasonable price.
Reducing infinity to managable size --.......2002-04-24
The author, Rozsa Peter, is a lady mathematician (or is one not supposed to notice?) who shares with George Gamow and Richard Feynman a flair of making the complicated seem simple. The preface states that the book is written for "intellectually minded people who are not mathematicians." The book explores various ways in which the concept of infinity enters into mathematics - and the dangers it poses. Along the way other concepts, drawn from topology and non-Euclidean geometry, are snuck in. While these are only peripherally concerned with infinity, they constitute some of the most appealing material. The "seven bridges of Koenigsberg problem" is an example. Perhaps the very best part of the book is the last chapter, devoted to Goedel's "unprovability" theorem.
My general impression of this book is that of a mathematical counterpart to Gamow's, "One, Two, Three ... Infinity" -- but not quite as good. Of course Gamow's work is such a masterpiece that "not quite as good" still leaves lots of room. And that is why this book is a gem in its own right. I recommend this book especially to high school students with a strong interest in mathematics.
So, why is the book not quite as good as Gamow's? For one thing it does not quite have the breathtaking sweep of Gamow. The other is that in the process of making things simple, Rozsa overdoes it at times. Concepts that great minds struggled with for centuries appear as child's play. The image of little ten-year-old Eva rediscovering the irrationality of the square-root-of-two all by herself seems a little strained. But then again -- maybe she did do it!
Very good general account on infinity.........2001-07-10
This book will give you a good general introduction to the concept of infinity. I found the presentation informal and quite easy to follow. Since the book was first written in 1943 and revised in 1960 there are some units that are not used anymore. For example, the coinage of pounds, shillings, and pence is dead. Things like a chapter on "The Charts Get Smoothed Out", may seem round about but still interesting. My favorite chapter is "Mathematics Is One". The derivation of "visual forms" in functions is excellent.
Have pen and paper handy because to really enjoy the book I found myself doing some of the "the reader can solve for himself..." stuff. Another point is that you can more or less read the chapters independently and in no particular order and still reap huge benefits from the material.
Thank God for Dover which still publishes this book. My copy is a 1976 edition. If you are interested in getting back in touch with things you may have long forgotten get this book.
Explanation of math from the very beginning.......2000-11-14
This book explains the why's behind math from principles as basic as counting to as complicated as series, geometry, and even some calculus principles. It is written in a conversational tone with lots of pictures (yes, and numbers). Each chapter builds upon the last, and it is easy to follow (though sometimes dense). It was my first "fun" math book and is still by far my favorite. There are other math books that take real situations and relate them to math, but this starts with math and sticks with it. Thus, not for the mathphobe, but great if you want to understand math from the ground up.
Fun intro to Infinity math for older kids and others.......1998-11-13
Infinity is fun. But most people have never been exposed to the fascinating theory of infinities. This book provides an extremely well presented introduction to the concepts of infinities. The presentation is at times a little forced, however overall it is clearly and simply written, and the basic analyses of enumeration by pairing of elements is explained in a simple and easily understandable manner. The elementary concepts of infinites are not difficult to grasp, and should and can be understood by anyone with an interest in mathematics. This book provides an easy to understand introduction to these concepts. I especially recommend it for parents wanting to study/learn math with their kids in middle and high school. It covers material that will not be covered at school, but is fun and not overly difficult to grasp, and will surely help both the parent and child.
