What an amazing book !!!! At 40, I know nothing of financing. Religiously living paycheck to paycheck and raising young children, life gets to be overwhelming. This book has empowered me to look at my finances, my life in a whole new light. There is a way to help my children. I wish Suze Orman could be my financial planner. I have learned so much and yet I have so much more to learn thanks to her advice, insight and experience. This book is an incredible beginning for my journey. If only I had known earlier.

Not really worth what I paid for it.......2007-06-20

But it did include some information that's nice to know. My investment strategy is a bit more aggressive and this audio-book leaned conservative. Then again, I wasn't familiar with Suze Orman before purchasing this book. So all in all, I'd say it's a decent read for most people, though I would have probably benefited more from her "Young and Broke."

Book is giving a good overview on many different options for investing money. Writing is fluent and easily to understand also for newcomers in this field. There is no difficult language. Reading this will improve any discussion you might have with a so called financial advisor.

THE DOWN SIDE OF THE MUSIC BIZ!.......2006-10-07

Not a romance in the true sense of the word but a look "inside" the recording business. Vulgar language abounds but it suits the story. Written like a journal with "notes to self" this book follows Jenny Troiani from quitting her job in hopes of becoming a rock star. Her frustrations with finding others who share in her dream, "using" people she can't stand to get where she needs to be, and how those around her use her and abuse her.

I have often dreamt of being a rock star. I have even been in a few bands so clearly this book rings true for me. However, the characters are great. The style is loose and easy to get into. I read the book in one day. It made me laugh out loud and remember with slight sadness the heartaches I have felt. This is more than worth your time if you have ever had a dream and your parents thought you were crazy or you thought you were in control but really weren't.

dreaming of rock stars.......2004-04-14

This book is a must for those girls who's parents f*@#ed them up and who dream of rock stars. Even wannabe groupies will enjoy this book. It reminded me of my circle of friends and Jenny bore the strickingly same personality as my friend Mary Ann. The part about the Mary figure in her mother's front yard had me rolling on the floor laughing because not only was it funny but Mary Ann actually expierenced it. This book is hilarious and I found myself passing it around to my circle of friends. Despite being a book about becoming a Rock Star, this book is very relatable. Most of the time you'll find yourself comparing aspects of Jenny's life and memories to your own.

Amazing book.......2003-04-02

I picked this book up because of its strange out-of-focus cover. (I have never heard the expression "Don't judge a book by its cover") It waited in my apartment for a couple of weeks and one day I decided to pick it up. A day later I was done with the book. It's a great read and it was great to live vicariously through Jenny. It is an honest read. I would recommend the book to anyone who ever dreamed of being a rock star.

if you've heard one, you know the story of most bands..........2003-01-03

After hearing what a great read this book was, I was really excited about reading it. However, once into the book, I found myself dragging..I kept putting it down and finding other things to do. She had alot to work with but it somewhere just lost its excitement. It was interesting to see how the band was courted by the music industry and then what happened with the release of the demo.

The story is great, but there is something about the book, maybe the way it was written, that makes it fall a little flat. Somewhere after her daring haircut and meeting Flowers, it just kinda lost the "spark". I was truly bummed out cause it seemed like it would be a fun read. For those new to rock and roll life styles, then read this book. If you've ever watched VH1's Behind the Music, then you basically can pass on this one.

Beware that this is ACADEMIC history. If you like a good READING experience, look elsewhere. But full of fascinating information. Maybe someday a narrative historian (or novelist) will make good use of all the material contained herein. VITAL for Nazi/WW 2 buffs.

Chilling.......2006-08-15

I found "The Nazi Seizure of Power" compelling and frightening. In my 25-year career as an assignment editor at daily newspapers, I have become familiar with the structure of communities of the size studied in the book. Thanks to the William Allen, suddenly I can see how a minority of radical reactionaries took control of a populace of ordinary, decent people. Add a little more fear and bruised pride to America, I realize with a shock, it could happen here.

Northeim and the Nazi Serzure of Power........2005-11-12

This is a good book to read in explaining how a democratic society became totalitarian in a span of six months. THe author Allen explains it using the small town of Northeim in Hanover. Northeim was a typical town that weathered the turmoil of the twenties and thirties. In 1932, 66% percent of the population voted for the Nazis. In 1933, the Nazis took over the town administration and basically wiped out any opposition by the SPD or Nationalists. This book explains how the Nazis did it on a small scale. Initial violence, concentration camps, firing of those who held opposite political views, and police raids silenced the opposition. They were so silenced that the town did not get back its freedom till 1945.

This is a fairly long book and centered more toward the academic audience. However it gives a great view of how Germany changed overnight when Hindenburg selected Hitler to be his Chancellor. Democracy died a quick death, even at the local level. A great read for those trying to understand the Nazis.

Focuses on One Location.......2005-04-01

Allen concentrates on Northeim, Germany in looking at the transformation that took place from 1922 to 1945. In his approach, key individuals are shown to be the players who brought about the change in thinking in the community. His study offers depth in that regard. In considering these key leaders, he goes on to describe how they influenced the general population to buy into their ideology.

There were points of internal conflict within the organization. The Nazi Party was not a unified whole. Like any human social structure there were different ideas about what should be done and how matters should be approached.

Generally, the public is shown to be apathetic. There wasn't much feeling one way or the other to the average citizen in Northeim. Chronologically, Allen goes on to describe what took place in the town after WWII.

Excellent example of how fragile democracy really is.......2003-07-07

Sheridan uses one community to explain how the Nazis (NSDAP) were able to gain power in an entire country within the democratic system. His exhaustive research of local archives shows how the NSDAP was able to set up an effiecient bureaucracy that simply outworked other parties and spread their message through 1000's of meetings. Extremists (from the right or left) don't always take power through military force - sometimes the open nature of democracies can be used to subvert them, as was the case in Germany in 1933. True, there are many other factors involved, but Sheridan's book provides clear examples that are often overlooked.
