Everyone should read this book. It is an enjoyable read. It gives the reader valuable information in a way that is not confusing or induces boredom. I am giving copies of this book as Christmas presents this year to family members who are joining the workforce for the first time.

Beyond Paycheck to Paycheck: A Conversation About Income, Wealth, and the Steps in Between (Total Candor)

Perhaps the quickest read of all financial planning books. Full of most of life's most important financial lessons from one of society's least likely sources: a barber with more money than anyone expects. Through anecdote the barber teaches his curious disciples the key money lessons you needed to know years ago - but probably still don't.

You'll learn quite a bit by reading "The Wealthy Barber." Take notes, however - there's no glossary or index making it's referential value somewhat limited. But then again, the story is so good, you can read it again later if you find you need a refresher.

The book uses the story approach to teach you something, and does it well. The storyline keeps you interested, so you don't fade off reading boring financial info. I learned a lot from reading the book, and have read about 3 or 4 other personal finance books that have been pretty redundant in information.

Best personal finance book ever!!.......2007-01-20

The Wealthy Barber, in my opinion, is the best personal finance book ever written. Mr. Chilton provides valuable and simple advice on how to obtain wealth. He covers topics such as life insurance, wills, saving 10 percent of your income, and owning your own home. This book should be a mandatory read of all high school and college students. If you want to retire wealthy, change your financial status, and improve your life today, you should order and read this book.

This is a great book to learn the basic of finances. It's easy to read because of it's story format. Would recommend especially if you're self-employed. It helps you acquire the habilities to plan a good retirement.

A Good Introduction.......2001-02-01

While this book (based on the PBS series of the same name) is far from perfect, it does give a pretty good overview of some of the main themes of modern investing with profiles from some of the Street's biggest stars. You can do far worse than listening to thoughts about growth investing from Foster Friess and value investing from John Neff. And the final chapter on risk with Peter Bernstein was an exceptional overview of the basic concepts of behavioral finance and the mental mistakes often comitted by amatures and professionals alike.

However, people with a deeper grasp of Wall Street will be frustrated by the lack of depth on many topics. Just to cite one example, the chapter on asset allocation ignores the current debate about the amount of benefit investors really get from international diversification. Yes, in normal circumstances the correlation between markets may be low, but in times of crisis - when the benefits of diversification are most needed - correlations tend to rise dramtically. When panic starts in one market, other markets often are either guilty by association (Brazil and Argentina got hit during the Peso crisis) or because money managers sell those assets which are easiest to sell. Just ask the folks at Long Term Capital Management what happens when correlations suddenly increase.

But that lack of depth also makes this a pretty easy read and there are enough useful bits to make this a book worth reading, especially for people new to the great game.

Egregious Error.......2000-03-14

I couldn't get past page 9 where the author, in discussing trailing PE ratios, attributes a remark made in 1987 to "Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) Chairman Alan Greenspan." Greenspan, of course, has never even served on the SEC, much less chaired it. Sorry, but if the author can't get the basics right, the rest of the book is suspect.

Deliciously Absurd.......2003-12-11

Those who know Edward Gorey know his humour is not for everyone. That said, for those who appreciate this shade of humour (often also fans of the likes of Tim Burton and Charles Addams), this will be a treat. I'll admit that I laughed myself silly with The Willowdale Handcart.

"French Aircraft" Beautifully Illustrated but Poorly Written.......2006-02-28

Volumes one and two of "French Aircraft from 1939 to 1942" by Dominique Breffort and Andre Jouineau are some of the few books available today devoted entirely to French World War II aircraft. As such they are a useful addition to the literature available on WW2 military aviation, although both volumes suffers from several significant shortcomings.

Breffort and Jouineau begin their series with an introduction that briefly covers the French air force's history during the pre-war period, before moving on to give a quick description of the air battles that began on the Western Front in 1939 and culminated in the Battle of France in 1940. The authors focus the remainder of their books on individual French aircraft, covering the Amiot 143 to the Curtiss Hawk 75A in volume 1, and the Dewiotine D 500 to the Potez 63 in volume 2. Both volumes conclude with a brief section of "might-have-bens" (more precisely titled "Those That Never Were")--French aircraft that were produced and flown in experimental form but never entered production or service before France's fall.

The books' strengths are that Breffort and Jouineau describe all of the major and most of the minor French combat aircraft, including those (such as the American Curtiss Hawk 75A, Douglas DB-7, and Martin 167-F) not produced in France but nevertheless employed by the French Air Force. The books are also generally well organized, and include lots of high-quality photos and brilliant color prints of each aircraft.

The books suffer from several weaknesses, however. First, the text is translated into English from French, and in several spots the translation is poor. At times this makes it difficult, for example, to discern from the text how many of a particular aircraft were produced or when a given aircraft entered service. Second, the technical specifications for each aircraft are very brief and provide only bare-bones performance, weight, and dimensional information. Thirdly, the space taken up by the sections covering experimental aircraft would probably have been better used covering minor aircraft that entered French service but are for some reason not covered in the main text, such as the Latecoere 298, Vought V-156-F, and Liore-Nieuport LN 401. Finally, it is not clear why the series was produced in two volumes-the two books are thin enough that they probably could have been produced as a single convenient, compact book.

Despite these shortcomings volumes one and two of "French Aircraft from 1939 to 1942" are some of the few concise references on French World War II military aviation, and for those searching for information on this topic they may be worth buying.

How did educated Westerners make an enemy of an inspiration that has changed the lives of billions? Why is nationalism synonymous with atavism, fanaticism, xenophobia, and bloodshed? In this book, Robert Wiebe argues that we too often conflate nationalism with what states do in its name. By indiscriminately blaming it for terrorism, ethnic cleansing, and military thuggery, we avoid reckoning with nationalism for what it is: the desire among people who believe they share a common ancestry and destiny to live under their own government on land sacred to their history.

For at least a century and a half, nationalism has been an effective answer to basic questions of identity and connection in a fluid world. It quiets fears of cultural disintegration and allows people to pursue closer bonds and seek freedom. By looking at nationalism in this clearer light and by juxtaposing it with its two great companion and competitor movements--democracy and socialism--Wiebe is able to understand nationalism's deep appeal and assess its historical record.

Because Europeans and their kin abroad monopolized nationalism before World War I, Wiebe begins with their story, identifying migration as a motive force and examining related developments in state building, race theory, church ambition, and linguistic innovation. After case studies of Irish, German, and Jewish nationalism, Wiebe moves to the United States. He discusses America's distinctive place in transatlantic history, emphasizing its liberal government, cultural diversity, and racism. He then traces nationalism's spread worldwide, evaluating its adaptability and limits on that adaptability. The state-dominated nationalism of Japan, Turkey, and Mexico are considered, followed by Pan-Africanism and Nigeria's anticolonial-postcolonial nationalism. Finally, Wiebe shows how nationalism became integrated into a genuinely global process by the 1970s, only to find itself competing at a disadvantage with god- and gun-driven alternatives.

This book's original answers to imperative questions will meet with deep admiration and controversy. They will also change the terms on which nationalism is debated for years to come.
