Customer Reviews:
Excellent Resource.......2007-02-15
If you know nothing about financial statements, this resource is for you. This text does an excellent job explaining financial statements and ratios. You'll learn the meaning of each statement and each ratio and how to use these together to monitor the health of your business in general and in comparison to others in your industry.
Get your feet wet with this one..........2004-11-28
I have recommended this book for years to entry-level corporate executives with no financial experience, and to executive assistants in finance departments of large corporations, as a way to familiarize themselves with financial statements. Introduces terms and provides a great base to build on. Many have come back to buy more for staff new to their departments, to give them a leg up.
Waste Of Time.......2004-01-27
This is one of those books that expects that you have some knowledge of the material already, and if you do its really nothing new. The examples lack substance. Its a learn everything in "50 Minutes" bbok (Which I didn't notice that until I received it in the top right hand corner). To anyone who is learning this the first time, stay away and go with the other reader's recommendations because you are going to have to relearn this again, and this this stuff is just to dry for that to happen...

Book Description
Twelve steps for converting feedback into bottom line improvements This book presents an innovative and radically logical way of thinking about organizational knowledge and competition that centers on discipline, integration and focus. By tapping into the previously unrealized strengths that lie in all companies, the author suggests that it is possible for companies to move beyond informational chaos to create focused and enticing new opportunities. The 12 step method presented in the first five chapters show you how to take information from feedback from assessments, surveys and audits, convert it into usable knowledge and get bottom line improvements. The strategy expands the plan-do-check-act (PDCA) model into a Plan-Do-Knowledge-Act (PDKA) process. The case studies provided reinforce the principles and the theory behind them. Significant challenges face any organization intent on becoming world-class by managing knowledge effectively. They can be classified into four types: making use of your information by integrating it, organizing the different forms of information into a manageable framework, focusing equal attention on your strengths and your weaknesses, developing decision-making criteria based on key company drivers. The12 steps outlined in Knowledge-Driven Profit Improvement: Implementing Assessment Feedback Using PDK Action Theory will show you how to make your company into a world-class organization.
Book Description
This is a collection of essays touching on four distinct areas of interest to philosophers, lawyers, and political scientists: the philosophical justification for the adversary system; the problems of truth-finding in an adversarial setting; the issue of justice in relation to social policy-making; the right to privacy.

Book Description
It is now nearly a century since special relativity reconciled seventeenth century dynamics and nineteenth century electromagnetism, yet physics students are almost invariably introduced to the subject as "MODERN PHYSICS" - and something of a mystery. This book, instead, treats special relativity as a useful branch ofphysics rather than as an astounding novelty. The emphasis is on its dynamical consequences, its effect on quantum mechanics (with all that this implies for chemistry and biology), the new insights that it provides in electromagnetism and its utility in problems such as calculating radiation from fast-moving charged particles. To avoid giving the impression that relativity somehow eliminates the distinction between time and space, 4-vector notation is not used until the latter part of the book. Since all the consequences of relativity arise from the Lorentztransformation, more th an usual care is taken to show how it arises from simple notions aboutthe uniformity o f space and time, and the absence of any universal reference system atabsolute rest. R ecent studies in dynamics stress the critical difference between linearity and nonlinearity and so there is a proof that the transformation must be linear, something ignored by almost every other book on the subject.
Book Description
Will Self has established himself as one of the most brilliant, daring, and inventive writers of his generation. My Idea of Fun is Will Self’s highly acclaimed first novel. The story of a devilishly clever international financier/marketing wizard and his young apprentice, My Idea of Fun is both a frighteningly dark subterranean exploration of capitalism run rampant and a wickedly sharp, technically acute display of linguistic pyrotechnics that glows with pure white-hot brilliance. Ian Wharton is a very ordinary young man until he is taken under the wing of a gentleman known variously as Mr. Broadhurst, Samuel Northcliff, and finally and simply the Fat Controller. Loudmouthed, impeccably tailored, and a fount of bombastic erudition, the Fat Controller initiates Ian into the dark secrets of his arts -- of marketing, money, and the human psyche -- and takes Ian, and the reader, on a wild voyage around the edges of reality. As we careen into the twenty-first century, Self perfectly captures the zeitgeist of our times: money is the only common language; consumerism, violence, and psychosis (drug-induced and otherwise) prevail; and the human soul has become the ultimate product.
Customer Reviews:
Will Self is great. Period........2006-07-25
I will be honest: My Idea of Fun is an excellent book albeit confusing. The story of Ian Wharton, a taciturn eidetic, sometimes blurs the fine line of reality and the subconscious. Will Self fuses together elements of economics, psychology and capitalism into a satirical tour-de-force that can easily be overlooked because of its brilliance. Self's vocabulary is expansive; when reading MIOF (or any of Self's books, for that matter) make sure that a dictionary is handy. Self employs an arsenal of words, expressions and beautiful linguistic explorations that raise the bar of the English language. More often than not, Self's prose is beautiful and challenging. Self's lexicon may make MIOF daunting and intimidating but it is undoubtedly a rewarding read.
Once I started reading MIOF, I couldn't put it down. It is simply a great read. Will Self is hands-down on of the best writers that a 21st century literary critic could have the pleasure of reading. Self is often described as a disciple of Martin Amis, but I find Self to be much better than Amis (with the exception of Amis' Money).
Read My Idea of Fun. Look up the words and pay attention. You'll be glad you did.
Possibly the worst book that I ever read. .......2006-03-02
Title says it all ... it's just pornographic twaddle impersonating cool. Even makes Jay McInerney look good.
Book Description
On April 10, 1970, Hill 927 was occupied by troopers of the Screaming Eagles of the 101st Airborne Division. By July, the activities of the artillery and infantry of Ripcord had caught the attention of the NVA (North Vietnamese Army) and a long and deadly siege ensued. Ripcord was the Screaming Eagles’ last chance to do significant damage to the NVA in the A Shau Valley before the division was withdrawn from Vietnam and returned to the United States.
At Ripcord, the enemy counterattacked with ferocity, using mortar and antiaircraft fire to inflict heavy causalities on the units operating there. The battle lasted four and a half months and exemplified the ultimate frustration of the Vietnam War: the inability of the American military to bring to bear its enormous resources to win on the battlefield. In the end, the 101st evacuated Ripcord, leaving the NVA in control of the battlefield. Contrary to the mantra “We won every battle but lost the war,” the United States was defeated at Ripcord. Now, at last, the full story of this terrible battle can be told.

The real deal.!.......2007-06-27
If you have any knowledge of the Vietnam conflict or were in country at the time ,this is a perfect blow for blow record,no punches pulled ,and every bit of research backed up with detailed fact. It gives the overall viewpoint, officers ,nco s and the Grunts.A great read about real men and the horror of War.
Ripcord Review.......2007-02-09
Keith Nolan has done it again! A very accurate account of a battle in Vietnam. A grunts eye view!Only thing that would have made the book better. Would have been maps, something he fails to do in all his books.
Excellent researched book.......2007-01-17
This historical account represents a detailed account of the battle for RIPCORD. The dedication of the troops to a questionable operation at the time of the winddown of the Vietnam War is admirable to say the least.
This work exposes the quandary of senior officers who are shackled by the political forces from Washington. Nevetheless, it also reveals the shortcomings of certain officers who were more concerned with their careers than the troops. The most famous example is that of Colonel Lucas. The "ring knockers protective association" was successful in seeing that he was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously. This in spite of the fact that he made bad decions in exposing his troops to unnecessary RIF's with the consequest heavy caualties. As one of his troops said "it was the kind of situation where if he had lived, he probably would have been brought up on charges, but since he got killed, he ended up with the Medal of Honor." Nevertheless, this book entails the heroism of all who participated in this ill-conceived battle.
RIPCORD.......2006-10-29
Excellent history that is well written and, unlike many military histories, is extremely readable. It is accurate and tells a story that not many people know about. I signed into this unit (2/506 101st Airborne) just a few weeks after Ripcord happened. It filled in a lot of the stories that I had heard about this battle. Fantastic book!
Mr. Reed, stand down.......2006-10-21
I have little to add to the other generally thoughtful reviews of this book. Some have found its organization confusing; the whole campaign was complex, and I don't see how it could be related any clearer in a way that captures so much important detail. If you're confused, read it again. It's worth it. Remember, this action took place over months, and involved many company and platoon sized actions; comparisons to "We Were Soldiers..." or Hamburger Hill simply don't take this into account. Great job, Mr. Nolan.
Mr. Reed, your second review of this book indicated that you had at least skimmed the manuscript prior to writing, which was not evident from your first review; you to should give it another look. In particular, I challenge your criticism of Mr. Nolan's portrayal of the "higher echelon" as "incompetent and cowardly". To what and whom do you refer? General Hennessey? Although the judgement of the battalion, brigade, and even ADC are presented in way that offers several different interpretations, their personal valor is never questioned-indeed, the opposite is true.
Also, I challenge your assertion that Mr. Nolan engages in "media hype and antiwar sentiment". Do you deny that there were drug and discipline problems in the rear areas? Mr. Nolan goes out of his way to point out that this was mitigated on the line, so what is your point? Even in cases of gross cowardice, occasionally are portrayed, Mr. Nolan tries to present a balanced view-witness his treatment of Doc Kuntz.
The US military was generally very effective in Vietnam, particularly so given the absurd political environment within which it was forced to operate. But it was not above criticism, nor is it antiAmerican to suggest that mistakes were made, opportunities missed, and some really reprehensible events may have occurred. In the context of a ten year involvement, 58,000 deaths, hundreds of thousands of wounded, and an ultimate NVA victory, I find your breast beating somewhat maladroit.
Book Description
With My Own Eyes tells the history of the nineteenth-century Lakotas. Susan Bordeaux Bettelyoun (1857–1945), the daughter of a French-American fur trader and a Brulé Lakota woman, was raised near Fort Laramie and experienced firsthand the often devastating changes forced on the Lakotas. As Bettelyoun grew older, she became increasingly dissatisfied with the way her people’s history was being represented by non-Natives. With My Own Eyes represents her attempt to correct misconceptions about Lakota history. Bettelyoun’s narrative was recorded during the 1930s by another Lakota historian, Josephine Waggoner. This detailed, insightful account of Lakota history was never previously published.

Book Description
The author lifts the veil of secrecy from scientific research conducted in this country. He presents a shattering indictment of the scientific community from the halls of government to the research centers at major universities and corporations. Documents case after case of influence peddling, doctored research and outright fraud, and reveals how the twin forces of money and status compromise and corrupt the pursuit of scientific truth.
Customer Reviews:
good overview of problems but weak on solutions.......2004-12-29
A discussion of fraud in science that focuses on a few cases in detail, rather than surveying many. The funding process in particular is illuminating, and "following the money" exposes corruption. In the examples given, proposals are denied because of unsubstantiated rumors generated by research competitors, large money awards are made to institutions clearly less suitable because of bias and political reasons, and the NSF can actively try to cover these up. The topic of doctoring data is examined, particularly the David Baltimore and Stephen Breuning cases; the most disturbing aspect being the obstructionism of the institutions involved, to the extent of taking action against the whistleblowers. Fraud in drug and military research are also discussed. While some suggestions for dealing with these problems are included, this part is weak. This book is recommended, especially to those who think that science is always a self-correcting process.

Book Description
This book gives an update on the rapidly changing events surrounding the introduction of an environmental protection regime in Antarctica. It takes up the historical background, as well as the role of science as a vehicle for political action. In particular it traces the shift of political agendas relating to Antarctica, and the changes this has wrought in research directions. The book brings together discussions from a symposium held at the University of Göteborg in Sweden, where a unique interaction between scientists, research administrators and philosophers of science homed in on the implications for science that flow from the shift towards an environmentalist focus in Antarctica. It is argued that changing trends in Antarctic research must be understood bifocally, i.e. with reference both to political changes and epistomological considerations. This places the book squarely in two different discourses, one in the social studies of science and technology, with special reference to science policy, and the other in environmental studies, with special reference to Antarctica. A comprehensive index is included.
