Recomended by an Accounting Professor.......2006-11-06
I am an accounting professor. This little book is a required text in the MBA course I teach, "Accounting for Managers". It is a great overview ofthe accounting process, and how it can be manipulated by the less-than-ethical. An easy read, but not simplistic. Anyone who owns or is thinking about buying stock should read it.

Book Description
Financial market turmoil grabbed headlines in the nineties. Many countries, most notably in East Asia, saw their currencies collapse and output plummet. Economic shock waves from these crises hit Canada.
In this collection of essays, distinguished contributors such as Linda McQuaig, Jacques Parizeau and Douglas Peters go behind the headlines. They explain the roots of international financial market turmoil and suggest reforms that will bring greater stability to the global economy and to the lives of the people who participate in it. They assert that financial markets are inherently unstable and argue for strong regulation.
Out of Control offers clear-headed analyses of the market turmoil of the 1990s and suggestions to minimize such volatility in future.

Book Description
This book examines how the increasing interdependence between trade and foreign policy can be managed within the legal framework of the European Union. In the context of the legally distinct characteristics of the European Community and the Common Foreign and Security Policy, it analyses the problems underpinning the regulation of three areas: sanctions against third countries, armaments and exports of dual-use goods. The book concludes that the interactions between trade and foreign policy may be regulated in a legally sensible and realistic way within the current structure of the European Union.

Book Description
This book focuses on two basic concepts: security and desertification in the Mediterranean Region and their linkages. It emerged from a single meeting of the "Workshop on Desertification in the Mediterranean Region. A Security Issue" held in Valencia, Spain on 2-5 December 2003, which was sponsored by the NATO Science Committee and NATO Committee on the Challenges of Modern Society. Desertification is recognized as a process of land degradation in arid, semi-arid, and dry sub-humid areas of the world that is the result of natural phenomena (e.g. climate variation) and anthropogenic factors. The outcome of this type of degradation has typically been considered to be either a reduction or a loss of both biological and economic productivity. The scope of the book includes the identification of the physical processes of desertification specific to both the north and south Mediterranean Region. Additionally, it specifically questions how changing environmental conditions may potentially reduce stability and peace in the world and thus affect "environmental security." During the workshop an array of government diplomats, security specialists, and social and physical scientists from the Middle East, North Africa, Europe, and North America reviewed the actions of past and current Mediterranean land use practices, especially in regard to environmental security, environmental consequences, and challenges for the future. The book is divided into six special topical areas dealing with Linking Environmental Condition to Security; Assessing Regional Conditions; Assessing Land Use Change Relative to Human-induced and Natural Cause; Opportunities for Regional Cooperation and Information Sharing; Soil and Vegetation Monitoring; and Development of Regional Desertification Indicators and Forecasting Techniques. This book provides a multi-lateral forum for cooperation, information exchange, and dialogue among the environmental, development, foreign and security policy communities within the Mediterranean Region and thus may provide a precedent for further cooperation and partnership, including other more advanced conferences and publications, on assessing the condition of the entire region and the subsequent impacts and linkages to environmental security.

Customer Reviews:
Everything but the kitchen sink.......2002-08-19
"I Left My Back Door Open" is a formulaic, positive self image novel, which seems to attempt to cover every current social issue in a hip progressive way. The protagonist, Dee Dee, comes across as a "Mother Earth" type of character and contends with almost every conceivable issue: incest, bluimia, obseity, foster parents, bi-racial children, sexual harassment, teen sex, adultery, abortion, divorce -- whew! Dee Dee is represented as a font of wisdom as she dispenses advice to all she encounters, is devoid of prejudice, and watches her weight (though eventually reconcils to the positive aspects of being full figured) and contends with the after effects of childhood trauma while searching for Mr. Right.
Besides the plethora of social issues the novel attempts to address, the dialog is rife with cliches and stale wit, and reads like a sit com television show. It all ends on a positive note with Dee Dee finding Mr. Magic and one is left to assume is happy ever after. Yawn. It was work struggling to finish this novel -- I recommend that you spare yourself the effort.
April Does It Again.......2002-04-07
Once again April Sinclair has proven to be a good writer. This pleasing book of love and growth as a person lives the reader wanting more.
Close the door now...........2002-03-17
This story has great potential and very realistic situations, but I found it kind of Slow and not moving in the direction I had expected. I like the realistic views of Skylars daughter and Dee Dee. We know that in most situations little girls are oftened threatened by the woman who daddy is spending too much time with and when daddy allows the woman to sleep in his bed, watch out. Also the relationship between Dee Dee and her best friends husband, in too many real life cases, best friends husbands confide in the friend, making relationships difficult and uncomfortable, so I think that April Sinclair did an excellent job portraying this real life situations that alot of mature single men/women will be faced with, dealing with the opposite sex and married friends.
Disappointing.......2001-09-18
Like almost every reviewer here, I was impressed with Sinclair's previous works so I was excited about reading her latest, only to be let down. There is no real story in this novel; it only seems to be a sounding ground for the social issues that Sinclair wishes to address. Authors have done this in the past with their novels, but they are clever enough to bury into the plot than being as obvious as Sinclair by making her characters discuss almost every social issue known to man. They were interesting conversations, however, so Sinclair should consider writing a book of essays. It just didn't work in the context of the novel, because it sounded forced and unrealistic. I understand that these conversations take place in real life between adults, but not ALL THE TIME. Sincalir should have stuck to a couple of issues and cleverly crafted them around the plot instead of ramming several down the readers' throats.
The stories went nowhere: Jade and her husband had serious problems and she was thinking of leaving him for someone else. We are briefly introduced to this someone else, then BAM! Jade gives her hubby a spanking and all is well. What happened between Sarita and her husabnd? That story was left hanging after his affair. What was the point of setting all of that up if it was left unfinished? What was the point of Tyeesha'story? She seemed to 'smarten up' a tad too quickly. That is NOT how teenagers operate; to get from point A:rebellion,to point B: acceptance of your parents rules--is a much longer, eventual process. All of the plot and structure was relinquished in favor for the social issues Sinclair raises, which is presented in a not so subtle manner. It would be nice to guess what Sinclair wanted to say with her book, instead of being told.
really didn't like it.......2001-08-18
I thought this book was so overwhelmingly predictable I just couldn't enjoy it at all. I've read Sinclair's other books, (Coffee will make you black & Ain't gonna be the same fool twice) so I really thought I'd enjoy this one. But I found the characters unintersting and utterly contrived so that the author could just spout her agenda. She moralizes everything, from spanking to teenage pregnancy. Afterwards, I felt as though I'd been cheated out of a good story because the author just wanted to rant about what she didn't like about society today.
If you're a April Sinclair fan, don't expect much. If you're new to this author, read Coffee Will Make You Black. Sooooo much better.
Book Description
While few soldiers may have read the works of Epictetus or Marcus Aurelius, it is undoubtedly true that the ancient philosophy known as Stoicism guides the actions of many in the military. Soldiers and seamen learn early in their training "to suck it up," to endure, to put aside their feelings and to get on with the mission. Stoic Warriors is the first book to delve deeply into the ancient legacy of this relationship, exploring what the Stoic philosophy actually is, the role it plays in the character of the military (both ancient and modern), and its powerful value as a philosophy of life. Marshalling anecdotes from military history--ranging from ancient Greek wars to World War II, Vietnam, and Iraq--Nancy Sherman illuminates the military mind and uses it as a window on the virtues of the Stoic philosophy, which are far richer and more interesting than our popularized notions. Sherman--a respected philosopher who taught at the US Naval Academy--explores the deep, lasting value that Stoicism can yield, in issues of military leadership and character; in the Stoic conception of anger and its control (does a warrior need anger to go to battle?); and in Stoic thinking about fear and resilience, grief and mourning, and the value of camaraderie and brotherhood. Sherman concludes by recommending a moderate Stoicism, where the task for the individual, both civilian and military, youth and adult, is to temper control with forgiveness, and warrior drive and achievement with humility and humor. Here then is a perceptive investigation of what makes Stoicism so compelling not only as a guiding principle for the military, but as a philosophy for anyone facing the hardships of life.
Customer Reviews:
Stoic Warriors is not Stoic.......2007-05-04
This book is interesting, and far more readable than most books on philosophy. But, for those who have actually studied Stoic philosophy, there is a problem. That problem is that the book does not do a very good job of presenting the teaching of Stoicism, and it is difficult to avoid the conclusion that the author does not much like Stoicism.
A major problem is that the author, Nancy Sherman, is an Aristotelian, and clearly has little sympathy for, or understanding of, Stoic philosophy. For instance, she many times criticizes Stoic teaching on emotions, such as anger, as impossible to apply to the problems of military personal. But she neglects to mention that the Stoics never claimed that Stoic philosophy was a simple pill that could quickly solve problems without the time necessary for real change, and a re-evaluation of values.
It seems, in fact, that Ms Sherman may not have taken enough time to understand Stoic philosophy in depth.
An academic attempts to comprehend the soldier's nature.......2006-01-01
Being fair to Professor Sherman is important in the context of reading and reviewing this exercise in academic philsophical thought. One has to rid themself of the image of a smug academic, wrapped in the iron belief of her own infinite knowledge, holding forth on a subject she can only describe as an outsider.
Thus, "Stoic Warriors" must be viewed, I believe, in the same vein as a treatise on brain surgery I might write should be viewed: the account of an observer with no actual experience and subject to errors of perception. Think the Lilliputians as they attempt to comprehend Gulliver.
Sherman somehow came to occupy the Distinguished Chair in Ethics at the United States Naval Academy for two years. Her attempt is to view the modern American soldier in light of Stoic philosophy. It would have helped immensely if Prof. Sherman had left all the leftist views common to academia at the door when she began her quest.
As she puts it, "so much of [her] understanding of the military has come from storytelling of military men and women." And those stories may have been true or not. More importantly, Sherman's focus might have been sharper on any story that reflected badly on the military or current administration. While Sherman is not as blunt as some othe academics, her very basic contempt for military force as an instrument of natioynal policy is evident. This makes reading her dissertation , well, an academic exercise, with little inherent value. But it must be said that Prof. Sherman does try. Unfortunately, in my eyes, she is far, far away fros understanding the Stoicism she attempts to apply. You cannot be one of the "touchy-feely" generation and understand Stoicism. Marcus Aurelius, I think, would have doubled over in laughter at this attempt.
Where convenient to her point, Sherman simply tosses aside Stoic doctrine. For example, in her chapter "Permission To Grieve," Sherman can't abide the idea of a soldier not feeling deep grief at the loss of comrades, so she simply dismisses her conflict with the ancient Stoics by dismissing even a watered down doctrine as demanding too much control of us. I guess philosophy is like the fabled Chinese restaurants of old: pick one from Column A, one from Column B. If the very words of Marcus Aurelius and Cicero don't support your allegedly expert point of view, just tell the original Stoics to take a hike. Academia: you simply gotta love it.
Her hostility to the conflict in Iraq does not lend credibility to her argument. One of her late chapters concerns the so-called scandal at Abu-Gharib. You can practically see her salivating at the prospect of administration officials being hauled away in chains. Unfortunately her description of events turns out to be markedly different than what appears to have actually occurred, but if you'll recall, The New York Times ran story after story about the Ugly Americans at Abu-Gharib without restraining themselves. Sherman obviously consumed such stories. She repeats the canard that now Attorney General Alberto Gonzales "approved" the use of torture. She also falls for the common misapprehension of the left that the Geneva Conventions capture all combatants in a conflict of any kind. She is mistaken on this.
As I said, Sherman makes an earnest effort to apply the bits and pieces of Stoic philosophy to the American military. She fails, but her attempt is not uninteresting nor entirely without merit. Despite all of her failings, she has produced a work of interest to the military historian, but it is not because she reaches her intended objective: rather it is because she does include a number of interesting stories which she then interprets to conform to her views.
Jerry
The More Things Change, The More They are The Same.......2005-11-27
Excellent book--Sherman does a very good job in contrasting purist stoicism with Aristotle's thought and "finding the mean". Suffice it to say that elements of this have proven their value to me at least through good times and bad, courtesy of Marcus Aurelius' Meditations.
Would that I had the same exposure to this material as I did to the algebra that I flunked royally. It would have done me an immense amount of good where the rubber meets the road...
Stoic therapy.......2005-09-06
I picked up this book by complete happenstance; it was in the "new" shelf at the library. The subject of stoicism happened to be on my mind. The book is very fine; I read it through at two sittings.
There are details given in other reviews here which needn't be repeated. I found the insights in the book to be profound, and particularly the focus on the theraputic qualities of stoicism and how the insights of the stoics can supplement the findings of modern psychology.
The value of the book is by no means limited to its application to soldiers and the military.
A lot has happened since the Stoics, just a little has changed.......2005-09-04
Dr. Sherman has produced a good book on military ethics concerning conduct on as well as off the battlefield. A clear overview of Stoic thought on what was and to a large extent still is considered the correct mindset/attitude towards self and other in a military context, interwoven with modern day examples of men and women in the US military struggling with their everyday realities as members of the 'fighting' forces upon whom rests the heavy responsibility of going into the hell more commonly known as war and 'taking care' of the problem at hand. However, according to what I make of Dr. Sherman's words, the Stoic lessons are no longer completely up to the task of handing the 'warrior' the necessary tools for dealing with the realities of modern warfare. That is, there are certain shortcomings in Stoic philosophy that shouldn't be overlooked. Dr. Sherman excellently communicates these shortcomings at the end of her book, by which means she has been able to present a well-rounded argument, making this work a valuable and highly recommended addition to any military ethics library.

Book Description
Is Bangladesh becoming a Taliban state? The question has become urgent in light of the growing strength of militant groups supposedly aligned with Al Quaida, the landslide victory of the center-right coalition in the general election of October 2001, and the deliberate and planned violence against religious minorities that followed. God Willing explores the explosive issue of Talibanization by analyzing the politics of Islamism in the world's third most populous Muslim country. Ali Riaz helps the reader to understand the emergence of Islamism as a legitimate democratic political in a largely secular state, as opposed to the media's sensational portrayal of Bangladesh as a country overrun by Islamist forces with a supranational agenda. The author compares Bangladesh with Indonesia and Pakistan, thus adding a valuable global context for evaluating the politics of Muslim countries.
Customer Reviews:
Good observations.......2006-03-06
Its a good reading. Although the book is decorated with endless academic jargon, it presents the modern history of Bangladesh in a less-biased way. The authors style is very academic and he looks at the political set-up in a secular way. The reader can actually feel there is a sort of leftist touch when he sees that the author is referring to Gramsci not infrequently. But then the author is determined to explain the forces and motivation behind the ruling clique in a socio-political structure. I liked his observations.
Welcome to the mind of a confused babbler!!.......2005-12-23
This is not a book, it's more like a bland paper to be submitted to scome academic journal. The author claims that bangladesh is becoming a hotbed of fundamentalism, yet the constitution is firmly based on secular principles. They even have Christmas, Doorga Pooja, Diwali as state holidays. If you're interested in reading the biased opinion's of a perosn, you might like the book, but if you want intelligent interpretation / exposition of facts, you'll be disappointed.

Book Description
After the Ark? traces the evolution of zoos from the private menageries of the ancient world to the corporatized, bureaucratic organizations of today. Drawing an analogy with Noah's mission to save all the earth's animals, it questions how well our modern zoos are fulfilling their stated aims of conservation, education, research and recreation. Nicole Mazur analyses the many critical challenges faced by zoos. This informative, ground-breaking study of the modern zoo will interest teachers, students and researchers right across the social and environmental sciences.
