Book Description

An investor looks at a monthly brokerage statement. The eye goes straight to the figure on the bottom -- the account value. That number is the total portfolio return, right? Wrong!

All too often, investors assume that what they see is what they get. But the minute they sell an asset or trade a security, they're socked with the tax bill, and the portfolio's true value begins to erode. For example, more than three-quarters of the value of an inherited IRA account can be consumed by estate and income taxes.

This doesn't have to happen. Brokerage firms know how to handle risk for their own accounts -- tax risk, as well as investment risk. Savvy individual investors can use the same techniques to protect themselves. Bob Gordon, a Wall Street veteran, shares the strategies of an insider to demonstrate how you can take advantage of tax law -- instead of letting taxes take advantage of you.

In plain English, this book explains federal and state tax considerations that investors need to factor in when they're ready to cash in their portfolios. Whether they are investing pros or neophytes, investors will learn how to harvest capital losses without selling and without risk, and how to capture interest as a long-term gain. They'll also learn tax-wise moves with options and the best end-of-year planning techniques. By the time they finish reading this book, their "tax bite" will be more like a "nibble".

5 out of 5 stars An early book on Deontic Logic, from 1913 Yale Law Journal.......1998-10-22

This book is a reprint of two Yale Law Journal articles from 1913 and 1917, and the 1964 reprint was a republication of the 1919 edition. The author, Professor Wesley Newcomb Hohfeld, distinguished four different types of "legal relations" or "rights" including right-duty; privileges; powers and immunities. The last two relate to the ability to create or discharge the first two. The results have been explained by Arthur Corbin, see especially 29 Yale L. J. 163 (1919) and reprinted in Jerome Hall, Readings in Jurisprudence (1938); Layman Allen (1998 Notre Dame Law Review) and Kevin Saunders (Akron Law Review) and in various books on "deontic logic" which is the logic of "obligation" (or duty) and "permission" (or privilege). See also some articles and texts by the Finish logician Georg Henrik von Wright, especially the 1951 article. Professor Hohfeld died in 1918, and his 1913 paper is one of the most often cited articles in legal jurisprudence. Some of Hohbfeld's terminology can be confusing. The terms "duty" and "privilege" are real "duals" of each rather than negatives. The 1917 paper also distinguished four different matters in which "right" is used -- (1) right in the strict sense, (2) udicial proceedings, (3) judgments and decreees, (4) enforcement, see 1964 book at 69.

                    Book Description

How do major scientific discoveries reshape their originators’, and our own, sense of reality and concept of the physical world? The Scientist as Philosopher explores the interaction between physics and philosophy. Clearly written and well illustrated, the book first places the scientist-philosophers in the limelight as we learn how their great scientific discoveries forced them to reconsider the time-honored notions with which science had described the natural world. Then, the book explains that what we understand by nature and science have undergone fundamental conceptual changes as a result of the discoveries of electromagnetism, thermodynamics and atomic structure. Even more dramatically, the quantum theory and special theory of relativity questioned traditional assumptions about causation and the passage of time. The author concludes that the dance between science and philosophy is an evolutionary process, which will keep them forever entwined.

                    Book Description

In the character Balaam Gimble, Mike Nichols has created a knight-errant of contemporary rural Texas: a Joe Don Quixote. Granted, Balaam's trusty steed may be only a rusty Frankenford-a twenty-three-year-old Ford pickup, reanimated time and again by the transplantation of parts from pickup cadavers, but the giants that Balaam tilts against are real enough to him-a ruthless businessman, a masseur-turned-dirty trickster, a money-mad hometown, and, most of all, plain old change.

For months the mayor and city council of the small town of Willoughby have been seeking a way to revitalize their town, to return it to the oil-and-cotton prosperity that it had enjoyed during the 1920s. They need an angle, something to put Willoughby on the map. When Balaam discovers a spring of health-giving mineral water on his two hundred acres of "woods and weeds," the town leaders suddenly see their angle.

As Willoughby's merchants begin selling Mason jars of Balaam's wonder water, the town's economic future looks much greener: Howard J. Liggett, the millionaire developer of a chain of upscale mineral spring resorts, offers to buy Balaam's land at many times its market value and build a resort on it, bringing even more people and prosperity to Willoughby. Residents soon forget how much they had cherished the "in our own sweet time" pace of their languishing little town.

Only Balaam sees that the town is beginning to change for the worse and is determined to save Willoughby from itself. Balaam is adamant-he won't sell the land that has been in his family five generations. But Liggett is just as adamant-he will acquire Balaam's land by hook or crook.

That crook is Ernie Ruiz, a young masseur with a criminal record. Liggett dispatches Ruiz to Willoughby to "persuade" Balaam to sell. Balaam remains serenely nonviolent in the face of Ruiz's campaign of terror.

When Ruiz cannot coerce Balaam to sell, Liggett stoops even lower: He resorts to perfectly legal means, informing Balaam that he has bought the mineral rights. Now the people of Willoughby know that even fool-headed Balaam, bless his heart, can't keep Willoughby off the map. Desperate, Balaam the knight-errant saddles up his Frankenford to make one final head-down, neck-bowed, full-gallop, Lone Star-spangled tilt at the windmills that threaten his hometown.

4 out of 5 stars Walden as a Texas Farce.......2005-10-19

I bought a copy of Balaam Gimble's at Book People in Austin on the strength of a review of the book in Texas Observer's summer books round up and was generally happy with the result. Author Mike Nichols sets his story in the fictional Texas town of Willoughby which he locates at the intersection of Highways 21 and 36. The actual town at the intersection of Highways 21 and 36 is Caldwell, seat of Burleson County and larger Willoughby which strikes me as being more like Dimebox, but what of that? Fiction is all about making things up and Nichols spins a fun and funny yarn of the unintended consequences of an accidental discovery and the yearning for a nowhere town to become a somewhere town. The characters are drawn broadly, but the characterizations are not condescending. And I'm certain that if anyone read this book out loud on the steps of the Burleson County courthouse, it would sound as if it were a performance in the native tongue.

5 out of 5 stars Don Quixote in Overalls.......2005-01-14

When I finished this book, I wanted to run away with Balaam Gimble. But then I realized I couldn't. I had to run to Balaam, since he sure wasn't a'goin' no-where.
Mike Nichols, a native Texan and a writer of unique talent - he's a story-teller in the best tradition of that threatened species - has written a marvelous tale, a gentle satire and comic-tragedy that will have you laughing out loud, shedding a few tears, and always cheering for the pure-at-heart-(well, mostly)-country/philosopher-deer/protector-part-time-handyman Balaam as he tries to show his friends and neighbors in the fictional small Texas town of Willoughby that money really can't buy happiness - or at least it can't buy Balaam - and that change is not always good.
The lessons he's aiming to teach may be wrapped in two worn-out clichés, but in Nichols' able hands the methods Balaam chooses to use to wake the townspeople up (in one case literally) are as fresh and eccentric - and ultimately satisfying - as the man himself.
In a town so dead that the mayor describes it as a place where "you could lie down and take a nap in most streets ... and never get run over," bachelor Balaam's 200-acre homestead of "weeds and woods," a shack and a pet deer is suddenly being hailed as the town's salvation after Balaam uncovers a cave on the property filled with a seemingly endless spring of health-giving mineral waters. The mayor, most of the townspeople and a greedy developer are salivating over the find, hoping to turn the dying Willoughby into Texas's answer to Arkansas' Hot Springs. Balaam, however, is happy with his lot, a life defined by his love for a deer named Stilts, his work keeping the town's widows' washing machines running and his daily stroll over to the deer feeders set up by his mad-hunter neighbor where Balaam takes his morning pee (deer won't come near human urine.) As Balaam fights temptation - millions for his property - and botched terrorism - the developer's Keystone Cops scare tactics aimed at running him off his property - his most daunting challenge comes from trying to "get up the gumption" to say "no" to his fellow townspeople who use all their wiles to make him sell.
The most refreshing thing about this tale of greed and the Don Quixote in overalls who fights against it is Nichols handling of the quirky small-town characters who pepper the pages of this book. The author, who lived for years outside a small Texas town much like Willoughby, has given his characters individuality and humanity. In a lesser writer's hands, they would have become simply caricatures. As nutty and money-hungry as most are, they still come across as unique, warm humans, loved by family and friends and with their dignity intact. He developed these townsfolk in such kind and gentle ways that this reader was left caring for them all (with the exception of the deer hunter) even as I was pained by their frailties.
In one sense, reading this book is like looking into a mirror. Do so. In the end you'll like what you see - unless of course you're a deer hunter.

5 out of 5 stars Good for many laughs, a tear and pure entertainment .......2004-12-29

Mike Nichols has created a group of characters with skills drawn from a deep understanding of human nature. He brings alive the people and community of Willoughby for the reader. Most of us have met several of these characters in our own lives and can easily relate to them and to Balaam Gimbel's struggle to preserve what is good in his town when greed on the part of the townspeople, politicians and a developer threaten to destroy it in the name of progress.

Balaam Gimble's Gumption makes a great gift book that treats a controversial subject with a light yet paradoxically serious touch that is laced throughout with humor. Nichols' treatment of the characters of this rural Texas Hill Country town is delightful. This is good reading for pure enjoyment.

                    Book Description

On the 150th anniversary of the world's most famous cavalry charge comes a revisionist retelling of the battle based on firsthand accounts from the soldiers who fought there

In October 1854, with the Crimean War just under way and British and French troops pushing the tsar's forces back from the Black Sea, seven hundred intrepid English horsemen charged a mile and a half into the most heavily fortified Russian position. In the seven minutes it took the cavalry to cross this distance, more than five hundred of them were killed. Celebrated in poetry and legend, the charge of the Light Brigade has stood for a century and a half as a pure example of military dash and daring. Until now, historical accounts of this cavalry charge have relied upon politically motivated press reports and diaries kept by the aristocratic British generals who commanded the action.

In Hell Riders, noted historian and Crimean War expert Terry Brighton looks, for the first time, to the journals recorded by survivors-the soldiers who did the fighting. His riveting firsthand narrative reveals the tragically inept leadership on the part of the British commander in chief, Lord Raglan, whose orders for the charge were poorly communicated and misinterpreted, and an unfathomable indifference on the part of British officers to the men who survived the battle and were left to tend their wounds and bury the dead in the freezing cold. While the charge overran the Russians, it gained nothing and the war continued for another two years. In finally capturing the truth behind the charge of the Light Brigade, Brighton offers a stirring portrait of incredible bravery in the service of a misguided endeavor.

Sometimes good history books are also a bit boring. This one covers the history, but is a fascinating read as well. I was hard pressed to put it down - and it is the best I've read on the Light Brigade.

Excellent insight of what really happen, with all the history, and social norms, and customs of the time, that allow this tragedy to happen

5 out of 5 stars Brittannia rule the waves.......2005-04-03

I found this hard to put down, that plus the background detail for the Crimean War, nineteenth century England, and the inefficiency of armies, makes for an interesting book. I had been an unknowing receiver of the Tennysonian myth created by his famous poem written shortly after the famous charge, and it is actually quite illuminating to check the mental phantom of the saga against the facts. With imperial overtones, the Crimean War begins as gunboat diplomacy. The depiction of the officer class is a snapshot of the British class system, and the defunct policy of allowing the aristocracy to purchase offer commissions. With the resulting sadsacks in charge the misteps towards the famous cavalry charge are set. The ambiguity lies in the blunder mixed with Tennysonian echoes (triggered by the reports of the famous Times journalist William Russell). The minute by minute account of the dread seven minutes of the fatal attack is almost cinematic, and fairly well wraps up the tale.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Rivetting Account Of The Ill-Fated Charge.......2005-01-25

Brighton briefly sketches the events that led to the Crimean War, but never loses focus on the Light Brigade. His account of the famous Charge is very detailed, and extends for over 100 pages. He skilfully allows the original participants (through their memoirs) to describe the action, and thus his descriptions have a first-hand 'feel' to them absent in some other books on the Charge. Brighton weaves these accounts together effectively. Despite the extraordinary detail of the section on the Charge, I never lost interest -- and was filled with admiration for the cavalrymen who rode up the valley and then down it in the hellfire of the Russian guns. Brighton examines Nolan's actions in (and after) relaying Raglan's orders to Lucan, and although apportioning most of the blame on Lucan, doesn't adopt a one-eyed strategy of making scapegoats of people. Instead, his discussions appear to be well balanced.

There are useful maps at the beginning of the book (though one showing the 'Thin Red Line' and the Heavy Brigade's repulsing of the Russians, prior to the Light Brigade's famous charge, would have been useful); and Brighton includes a list of those who rode in the Charge.

A great read and history 'brought to life' by those who created it.

5 out of 5 stars You are there.......2005-01-12

Terry Brighton's writing of the actual minute by minute unfolding of the charge was so well written I felt I was in the middle of it. Utterly captivating.
As for the rest of the book, he does an excellent job looking at the causes of the Crimean War, and delves into things I would never have thought about; transporting all the horses by ships for one thing.
Two chapters that could have been left out were about who blew the bulge for the charge and about Florence Nightingale's involvement after the charge. Both interesting, but they seemed to be vestigial.
I am not a big fan of military history, but this was an engrossing book.

                        Book Description

Venomous Earth is the compelling story of the worst chemical disaster in human history - unfolding now. It explores the geology, politics and biology of why tens thousands of people are dying, hundreds of thousands developing cancer and tens of millions of people are at risk in Bangladesh, India and beyond, from arsenic-contaminated well water. Andrew Meharg compares this scenario with that in other areas of the world where drinking water is tainted with arsenic, such as extensive areas of South Western USA, the Alto Plano of South America and New Zealand's volcanic regions. He details historical precedents spanning thousands of years in mining and smelting communities, and due to the widespread use of arsenic in alchemy, farming, medicine and manufacturing. His tale takes in William Morris, Paracelsus, George W Bush and a cosmetic that killed two popes. Finally Venomous Earth looks at how the current arsenic crisis is to be tackled and highlights new challenges to our ongoing struggle with the toxic element.
