Decent review book but could be better.......2006-07-25
This book was all I needed to pass the exam on my first try, even without any auditing coursework or experience. I'm not sure how it compares to Bisk, but the material is dense and it's hard to read more than a few pages at once. Accordingly, each of the "section reviews" is far too long and should be split up. There are 6 sections that take up 380 pages (much of this is for practice questions and answers), along with a 100+ page outline of professional standards (which there's no need to look at).
They try their best to highlight key concepts, but too many items are bolded, and the most important stuff doesn't really stand out. There are too many practice questions, and it's not worthwhile to do more than a few. The issue is that many of the practice questions aren't representative of real questions, and I'd recommend skipping their practice questions and instead focusing on the ones released by AICPA (they're included in this book).
All in all, it did the trick. But after using Schweser for the CFA Exam, dealing with Wiley was a bit painful. The book feels like reading a never-ending table of contents, with short explanatory concepts. More graphics, tables, and charts could go a long way.

Book Description
This volume addresses one of the most topical and controversial issues in banking and financial policy. It explains why governments have felt the need to liberalize banking and finance, for example, by privatizing banks and allowing interest rates to be set by the market. It describes how the consequences have not always been smooth, and considers how financial liberalizations could be approached better in the future. In addition to a clear and concise presentation of current theories and global experience, there are six carefully chosen country case studies.

Book Description
This title examines head-up display technology (HUD) and its application in the automotive industry. With the recent trend toward higher-speed mobility, as typified by the plan in Japan to build a second Tomei expressway linking Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, there is a need for more complex and accurate navigation or route guidance systems. In addition, older drivers, whose vision may be declining, must be able to obtain the necessary information for safe vehicle operation. The author demonstrates that HUD, originally developed for weapons targeting in fighter planes, is ideal for meeting these future automotive navigational and social needs. As HUDs become a standard automotive feature this work will be an important reference to this rapidly developing technology.

The Feller sisters are equal but opposite. Maggie is the good-looking, dyslexic little sister who knows how to get anything she wants--but not how to keep it. She "felt as if somewhere between the ages of fourteen and sixteen she'd walked off the edge of a cliff and had been falling ever since." Rose is the plump, practical, responsible older sister who knows about law but not much about her own happiness: "What did she like, besides shoes, and Jim, and foods that were bad for her?" When Maggie's latest eviction lands her in Rose's apartment, and Maggie insults Rose by seducing one of her sister's rare boyfriends, what follows is a chain of events by turns hilarious and heartbreaking. Embarrassed Rose evicts Maggie and begins a work sabbatical leading to a new livelihood and way of living. Maggie flees and runs away to Princeton. Masquerading as a student, she learns to love poetry and saves money for a trip to Miami--and a visit to a long-lost grandmother named Ella who might offer her a last shot at sanctuary. But In Her Shoes, the second novel from Good in Bed author Jennifer Weiner, is about more than the sisters' latest sibling rivalry; Maggie and Rose must sort out the childhood vulnerabilities and family mysteries that still linger two decades after their mother's death. In less capable hands, the plot might grow corny, but Weiner's humor and affection for the characters ultimately helps them transcend both neuroses and grief and learn the redemptive power of love. --Jane Hodges
Book Description
Meet Rose Feller. She's thirty years old and a high-powered attorney with a secret passion for romance novels. She has an exercise regime she's going to start next week, and she dreams of a man who will slide off her glasses, gaze into her eyes, and tell her that she's beautiful. She also dreams of getting her fantastically screwed-up little sister to get her life together.
Meet Rose's sister, Maggie. Twenty-eight years old, drop-dead gorgeous and only occasionally employed, Maggie sings backup in a band called Whiskered Biscuit. Although her dreams of big-screen stardom haven't progressed past her left hip's appearance in a Will Smith video, Maggie dreams of fame and fortune -- and of getting her dowdy big sister to stick to a skin-care regime.
These two women with nothing in common but a childhood tragedy, shared DNA, and the same size feet, are about to learn that their family is more different than they ever imagined, and that they're more alike than they'd ever believe. In Her Shoes -- Jennifer Weiner's follow-up to her critically acclaimed debut, Good in Bed -- observes Rose and Maggie, the brain and the beauty, as they make journeys of discovery that take them from the streets of Philadelphia to Ivy League libraries to a "retirement community for active seniors" in Boca Raton. Along the way, they'll encounter a wild cast of characters -- from a stepmother who's into recreational Botox to a small, disdainful pug with no name. They'll borrow shoes and clothes and boyfriends, and make peace with their most intimate enemies -- each other.
Funny and poignant, richly detailed and wrenchingly real, In Her Shoes will speak to anyone who has endured the bonds of big -- or little -- sisterhood, or longed for a life different from the one the world has dictated, and dreamed of trying something else on for size.

Customer Reviews:
Much Better than the Movie.......2007-08-14
Jennifer Weiner's book was much better than the film starring Cameron Diaz, Toni Collette, and Shirley Maclaine. Not to say that the movie was bad because it wasn't, but it left out so much of Maggie's character. Plus, it gave some interesting insights into why the stepmother was so despicable. I thought the ending of the movie was so beautiful until I read the book. It's much better and more emotional than the movie ever thought about being. The only thing that takes a little adjustment is that the chapters are told from different points of view. In one chapter you will read things from Maggie's perspective while the next one will be from Rose or her grandmother Ella. At first it was kind of annoying because you get hooked on what's going on with one character, but as you go on you'll find that the different points of view is what makes the book so much better because you get to understand each of the characters and why they are they way the are. ENJOY!!!
Well written for what it was.......2007-05-21
This was my first attempt at the now commonly called "Chick-Lit" genre. I read it because I wanted something quick to read over my Easter holiday and I really enjoyed the movie.
The movie was adapted really well so there isn't much in the book that wasn't in the movie. This genre makes for an easy read so I completed the book in a little over a day. Not something to read if you really want to get wrapped up in the story as I usually like to do.
If you haven't watched the movie yet, I would strongly recommend reading the book first so you're able to enjoy it more. I would consider reading more from this author.
Good morning, Good afternoon and Goodnight .......2007-05-21
A waiting room in the doctor's office, the wrestling room, and the car were only a few of the places that I utilized to get even just a couple more pages read in the three days it took to complete this witty novel. Born the daughter of a famous soprano and an oboist, Kate grows up in Manhattan. On the track for a career in publishing, her job search results in her finding both a gig writing tabloids and her best friend, Janie Segal, who comes with a trust fund. When the two move in together, Kate falls for their handsome neighbor, Evan McKenna. Evan, engaged to an unfaithful super model, breaks Kate's heart one winter night when she all but reveals her deep love for him. To escape embarrassment, Kate flies to London and the comfort of her mother. On the flight home, Kate meets Ben Borowitz, a political consultant, and manages to somewhat forget Evan for the first time.
Fast-forward and Kate is now a stay-at-home mom of three trying to fit in in Stepford-like Upchurch, Connecticut. Her new circle of acquaintances are trim, fit, worry-free clones who drive SUVs and carry matching diaper bags while making sure their children are not fed any preservatives. Not the most welcoming crowd, Kate is thrilled when Kitty Cavanaugh, the assumed leader, invites her to lunch in her home. After knocking, Kate walks into Kitty's house only to find her lifeless body lying in cold blood with a knife in her back.
As Kate becomes embroiled in the mystery of Kitty's death, it becomes clear that the ideal lives of Upchurch's mom clique are simply façades for the true secrets that lie below the surface. Kate uncovers Kitty's questionable past and distasteful details about her husband. Between nursery school and play dates, Kate risks her life in hopes for a little fun and a lot of adventures. Goodnight Nobody is a fantastic read, perfect for the beach or before bed, that keeps the reader guessing and trying to solve the mystery with Kate.
After reading In Her Shoes, I knew Jennifer Weiner was an author I had to have more of. When my mom came home from a signing in Philadelphia, she mentioned having a conversation with Ms. Weiner and was interested in reading her novels, so when I saw Goodnight Nobody at the library, I had to get it. Not bothering to read the summary, I dove right in, assuming from the title that it was about a single girl's attempts at love. Little did I know, it was a murder mystery.
Never having read a mystery before, I was apprehensive until I realized that the book wouldn't leave my hands. I read it everywhere, and the concise chapters were perfect, whether I was rushing but more so when I just had to keep reading but needed a good stopping page. The characters were portrayed so well that I felt as if I not only knew them, but they were also my neighbors. I laughed out loud when Janie accidentally put ecstasy in Reina's (Kate's mom) drink. This novel was extremely comically satisfying.
I would highly recommend Goodnight Nobody to someone looking for a light read. It is a great summer novel that begs to be finished in one sitting. The only con I could find was that it's a must that you reserve a whole day or you'll find yourself staying up way past your bed time itching to figure out who Kitty's killer is and if Kate's old flame, Evan, will be rekindled.

Great story.......2007-05-07
I loved this book. I laughed so hard in parts my sides hurt. I also cried sometimes... it was great. I also loved the price.
Good book, okay movie.......2007-03-20
I loved this book, just like I loved Good in Bed and Little Earthquakes.
I read the book long before they made it into a so so movie. I hate seeing movies of books I have already read. They are always different and mess with the images I had in my head while reading it. The only books that make good movies are those that were written like a screenplay and therefore should have just been movies to begin with. If you make a movie from a book, don't change details!!!!!!
Anyway, if you like her other books, you will like this one. The only thing that I don't like about her books is that they are so similar and I forget what characters are in what book.
Oh, and to the reviewer who compared this to Bridget Jones' books, I hated the Bridget Jones' books! This is by far a much better book and not in the same category!

Book Description
On a late September day in 480 B.C., Greek warships faced an invading Persian armada in the narrow Salamis Straits in the most important naval battle of the ancient world. Overwhelmingly outnumbered by the enemy, the Greeks triumphed through a combination of strategy and deception. More than two millennia after it occurred, the clash between the Greeks and Persians at Salamis remains one of the most tactically brilliant battles ever fought. The Greek victory changed the course of western history -- halting the advance of the Persian Empire and setting the stage for the Golden Age of Athens.
In this dramatic new narrative account, historian and classicist Barry Strauss brings this landmark battle to life. He introduces us to the unforgettable characters whose decisions altered history: Themistocles, Athens' great leader (and admiral of its fleet), who devised the ingenious strategy that effectively destroyed the Persian navy in one day; Xerxes, the Persian king who fought bravely but who ultimately did not understand the sea; Aeschylus, the playwright who served in the battle and later wrote about it; and Artemisia, the only woman commander known from antiquity, who turned defeat into personal triumph. Filled with the sights, sounds, and scent of battle, The Battle of Salamis is a stirring work of history.

Salamis review.......2007-08-23
One of the best histories of the Classical period that I have ever read; even as a professional scholar and university teacher. At times, Strauss nearly has one short of breath waiting for the next event. On the other hand, there is first rate explanation for personal actions, probable actions, and for the political and cultural contexts.
Salamis was like a Gigantic 2 mile wide 12 hour "bumper car " ride at the fair in hades!.......2007-05-21
This book shows how loose the Greek city-state confederacy really was.I knew it wasn't real tight anyway, but I was surprised that the Greeks were able to come together even for the Battle of Salamis.Xerxes, the Persian commander viewed the Greek democracy as an inferior form of government, and was able to exploit effectively rivalries between the city-states.Unfortuneately for Xerxes, while he was able to see the problems with the Greek Democracy,he was blind to the weaknesses in his own Divine Oligarchy type, and a "man's got to know his limitations".There is alot of detail in this book in regard to the workings and maintainance of the Trireme warship, detailed down to the social status and the smell of body functions of the rower next to one. From the read of this book you can easily picture a resentment of Xerxes by his most favored counselors.there are some "things" the Divine King needed to be told but who would dare to tell him? In addition Persian triremes were high in the water and made for speed, and the Greek trireme was low in the water, slow but more manueverable. Also as Srauss points out the Persian navy was mainly an intimidation force with its vast size "who would dare face it". The Greeks almost did kow-tow to Xerxes with some of the city-states going over to Xerxes.Xerxes was tricked into fighting with his triremes in a small compact area where speed and a high center of gravity were a disadvantage and his fleet was picked off little by little.in addition there was a breeze that blew through the straits that the Greeks knew how to use,Xerxes wasn't aware of most of the climate and geographic factors in regards to the narrows at Salamis.the battle might have gone completely different had Xerxes not fought in the narrows of Salamis. There was an interesting section on the "blame game"which always proceeds such a devastating loss, and heads did roll and the Mediteranean Sea and Poseidon himself were subjected to the most cruel floggings ever heard of in the history of mankind!!Ever since Mahan produced his work on the importance on sea power, alot more attention is placed on maritime exploits, indeed they prove more critical to a country than any land battles you can name. This is because the supply lines and economic lifeline are intertwined to seapower.Thermopalae bled Xerxes good, but it took Salamis to send him packing.Greek democracy wins in this battle but only this time,it doesn't necessarily win every time or even most of the time. The book really comes to life with all the rammings and the chaos, cries of despair and prayers to the Gods, maybe even a commendation medal or 3.It shows what people can and will do if they're lead right and have a chance of winning even with unfavorable odds. The final chapter shows the fate of Themistocles, the Greek strategist who was primarily resposible for engineering the Persian defeat. He ends up cringing to Xerxes son after his "fellow Greeks" threw him in a pile of disgrace shortly after the battle. The book gives a more detailed account of the reasons for Themistocles fall than i've previously read,a real life Greek tragedy from the pages of Aeschylus.
A must for ancient warfare enthusiasts.......2007-03-09
Succinctly and beautifully crafted, this easily digested book contains the historical background, essential story, and details of, arguably, the major naval conflict that enabled our western legacy. For anyone interested in ancient galley warfare, Dr. Strauss' book is an excellent jumping off place to begin your exploration.
Excellent telling of an important story.......2007-02-22
Strauss does an excellent job telling this tale of how an outnumbered group of Greek triremes destroyed the Persian armada and saved Greece. This is a page-turner of the first order.
Not really a History.......2007-01-27
Herodotus is informative and entertaining because he speaks of what he knows. When Strauss is entertaining, he isn't informative, because he speaks of what he doesn't know--how someone in antiquity dressed on a particular day or how they smelled. A professional historian undermines his credibility when he writes like a novelist and at an eighth-grade level. It is possible to write entertainingly at a professional level--Galbraith, for example. But lately, American historians have been profaning their hard-gained knowledge by substituting the story teller's art for the historian's. Barbara Tuchman, for example, in "The First Salute" succumbs to the same urge to ornament as Strauss does when he begins chapters with colorful but useless description of sights and sounds that cannot be corroborated. Otherwise, he does what an historian should, make a mosaic of disparate bits of knowledge to depict causation for events of moment. If he had stuck to that, his effort would have been to his credit. As things stand, he's written a children's book, and a self-indulgent one at that.

Book Description
The University of Chicago Readings in Western Civilization (nine volumes) makes available to students and teachers a unique selection of primary documents, many in new translations. These readings, prepared for the highly praised Western civilization sequence at the University of Chicago, were chosen by an outstanding group of scholars whose experience teaching that course spans almost four decades. Each volume includes rarely anthologized selections as well as standard, more familiar texts; a bibliography of recommended parallel readings; and introductions providing background for the selections. Beginning with Periclean Athens and concluding with twentieth-century Europe, these source materials enable teachers and students to explore a variety of critical approaches to important events and themes in Western history.
Individual volumes provide essential background reading for courses covering specific eras and periods. The complete nine-volume series is ideal for general courses in history and Western civilization sequences.

The Cosmic Dance: Science Discovers the Mysterious Harmony of the Universe by Giuseppe Del Re, Foreword by Thomas F. Torrance (Templeton Foundation) focuses on a new worldview, emerging from the science of the last decades of the second millennium. Its metaphor is the cosmic dance, or the harmony existing between systems that are so strongly interdependent that they behave as a single entity. This dance image hints at a general, evolving pattern in which all objects in the universe participate-like the ordered chaos of an African open-air market. Some of the chapters discuss the nature of processes in the universe, including chaos and chance in the game of life. The reconciliation of variety and unity are addressed in reference to the space-time continuum and the unified field of relativity theory. Del Re continues the investigation into an exploration of the origins of freedom and ethics, suggesting that science indicates that the human species may have a specific task in the universe: building a bridge between matter and spirit. Del Re ponders alchemy, the significance of symbols, and the meaning of the soul. Woven throughout a variety of esoteric and scientific inquiries is the underlying sense of the unifying principles of science and a spiritual outlook. The questions raised are issues that will be discussed by an emerging network of scientists and spiritual seekers, and this book will add a valued and informed perspective to these conversations. The Cosmic Dance is a playful book that takes a broad view of the subject of science and religious aspiration. Del Re wants us to keep an open and playful imagination about how we think and experiment with the universe. The book may please some who are naturally inclined to an esoteric science and irritate material reductionists if there are really very many of them left. If there are this book is to braod in its humanistic reach to engage them to reconsider their entrenchment. For the rest of us The Cosmic Dance is a pleasure to read. "This book is intended to take you on a voyage through the main ideas and discoveries of contemporary science, from physics to biology; a voyage aimed at finding out how the wonders the scientists have discovered can contribute to a wholesome personal outlook on life and the universe. "The times are over when our voyage would have been a royal visit to the empire which human ingenuity has conquered for our welfare and pleasure; it will be a humble and patient search for the meaning of the greatest concepts of science in the context of poetry, history, and philosophy. We shall be guided in our exploration by an ancient, recently revived idea: that all there is participates as if it were in a great harmonious Dance." from the preface.
Examines the place of man in the scheme of things.......2001-04-29
The Cosmic Dance: Science Discovers The Mysterious Harmony Of The Universe explores how the image and metaphor of dancing helps us come to terms with evolution, randomness, irreversibility, and the emergence of new information -- including the conception of the universe as a complex system made up of complex systems. From atoms to planets, solar systems to galaxies, and the choreographed evolution of ecosystems and human beings, The Cosmic Dance views such phenomena as interacting wholes, and apparently chaotic systems can work well. Author Guiseppe Del Re examines the nature of complexity, order, and organization while referencing scientists, philosophers, and literature. The Cosmic Dance examines the place of man in the scheme of things, including human ethics, morals, mind, soul, and psyche. A fascinating, informative, and at times inspiring blend of philosophy and science, The Cosmic Dance engages both the mind and the imagination that will be read with deep interest by scholarship and the non-specialist general reader alike.
