The Wives of Short Creek-A Novel of Polygamy and Prophecy
Gerald Grimmett Manufacturer: Limberlost Press Matrix Editions ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0931659841 |
Book Description
The Wives of Short Creek is author Gerald Grimmett's second published novel. His first novel, The Ferry Woman, a novel of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, from the small, but highly regarded Limberlost Press, was received with critical acclaim, and selected by the Salt Lake Tribune as the Best Book of 2001 from and about the west. The first edition of 2,500 trade paper copies was sold within six months, and a second edition is planned.Moving from the tragedy of his first novel, Grimmett has written a biting comedy about Mormon fundamentalist polygamy from the point of view of a seasick, love-starved sailorthe intrepid Heber Dean Smith. Heber Dean inherits a patch of Mojave desert in the town of Short Creek, and thinks he is headed for a dry paradise with sex for the asking. Not likely.
Heber eventually gains the trust of the secretive community, and marries Bishop Reuben Alldred-Price's widowed daughter Zinny. Heber and Zinny are happy until the Bishop decides it is time for Heber to take more wives to bring some balance to the demographics. The Bishop selects for Heber two prospective wives who are so bizarre in their behavior Heber Dean feels like the weddings would more like a hanging. Heber really loves Zinny and monogamy, but he also needs a lot of help from his hidden whisky still to get through his trials.
Central to this bitter-sweet comedy, is a search and chase for a secret last prophecy which it is hoped will legitimize their ongoing practice of plural wives, and in which the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. foresees the main streaming apostasy of the huge Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. The church in Salt Lake would like nothing better than to burn and bury this purported prophecy, so they send their minions to thwart Heber's mission by any means necessary. This leads to the novel's climax in the infamous War of the Sticks. The implicit condemnation of polygamy is self-evident, but so is the fun.
To complicate Sheriff Heber Dean's life, the fictional Arizona Women's Alliance instigates a cunning infiltration of Short Creek by the beautiful Rose Lee, a bitter, recently excommunicated mainstream Mormon. Her mission is to pave the way to free the wives of Short Creek from their slavery and degradation, and to bring to them the breathy zest of freedom from their bondage in the strictly closed, Patriarchal society of Short Creek.

The author seems to have taken the anti Mormon rewrite of history and use it to suit his fairy tale of Mormon history.
I am not sutrprised that the author is an ex Mormon. Some of the most absurd have been written by alleged writers who did not for some reason or another choose to just let go.
I originally gave this book one star but will upgrade to "2" stars. One for spelling and one for at least getting the names right.
I think the author could be writing great english novellas

The Fracture Zone: My Return to the Balkans
Simon Winchester Manufacturer: Harper Perennial ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0060954949 Release Date: 2000-10-17 |
Amazon.com
Simon Winchester, a British newspaper reporter for 30 years and the author of 13 books (including The Professor and the Madman), has turned his attention to the Balkans, an area he visited years ago on a road trip from Vienna to Istanbul--a journey he retraced in the spring of 1999. The Fracture Zone describes both of those trips, concentrating on the history and character of the region more than the recent war and its aftermath. Winchester has spent most of his career as a foreign correspondent, but his more recent occupations as historian and a writer for Condé Nast Traveler are in evidence here. Winchester's angle on the Balkans is unique and well written: those who have been bewildered at best and bored at worst by the Balkan conflict may find that The Fracture Zone captures their interest better than hundreds of news accounts of war atrocities. "Why is there, and seemingly always has been, this dire inevitability about the Balkans being so fractious and unsettled a corner of the world?" Winchester wonders aloud. That eternal question continues to plague world statesmen and, though not fully answered here, affords the opportunity for an interesting exploration.Book Description
A True Portrait of One of the World's Most Chaotic and Beautiful Regions That Explains Why Violence Has Always Occurred There--And Why It May Continue For Years To Come
The vast and mountainous area that makes up the Balkans is rife with discord, both cultural and topographical. And, as Simon Winchester superbly demonstrates in this intimate portrait of the region, much of the political strife of the past century can be traced to its inherent contrasts. With the aid of a guide and linguist, Winchester traveled deep into the region's most troublesome areas--including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, and Turkey--just as the war was tearing these countries apart. The result is a book not just about war but also about how war affects the living. Both timeless and current, The Fracture Zone goes behind the headlines to offer a true picture of a region that has always been on the brink. Winchester's remarkable journey puts all the elements together--the faults, the fractures, and the chaos--to make sense out of a seemingly senseless place.
Customer Reviews:
The Author did a wondeful job!!.......2003-01-18
There are times particularly in the introduction when you want the author to shut up and get on with the story. Later on you see how much this one example(in the beginning) kind of weaves all of the points to come together.
Overall-Good book if you like history (and good journalism)
An Enlightening Guide to a Shattered and Benighted Land.......2002-02-24
Simon Winchester proves himself the perfect guide to this shattered and tragic realm. He is part History Professor, part Philosopher but always a masterful Storyteller. With this and his previous books (especially "The Professor and the Madman") he proves himself to be one of the most eloquent and gripping narrative writers working today.
Some other thoughts:
1. This book ought to be required reading for every American and a warning about the horrible consequences of hate. One of the greatest tragedies of the Balkan conflict is that, as Winchester puts it, "almost all the people who have been so horribly at odds with one another are all, in essential ethnic terms, the self-same people." And lest Europeans and Americans feel smug in their own situations, let them remember the calamities of Antietam, of The Somme, and of Auschwitz.
2. The smart reader will prepare himself or herself with two things before reading. First, a good map. The history of the Balkans is so utterly complex on many different levels, not the least of which is geographically. Second, a good dictionary. Not since Henry Kissinger have I read an author with his quiver so full of (to me) new and interesting words: e.g. from only the first fifty pages I noted, emollient, osmotically, ordure, gyre, excrescences, orotund, refulgent, meretricious, harquebuses, embrasures, barbicans and ravelins.
3. The editing of this book is horrendously sloppy -- it is an embarrassment to Harper Collins. I have never seen so many typographical errors, missing phrases and other stupid mistakes.
4. This is not Winchester's best work. The early chapters are among his best work, but the narrative loses significant punch beginning in chapter six, which deals with the authors time in Montenegro.
Raconteur on a shelled-out road - Winchester on the Balkans.......2001-10-02
Winchester takes us with him on journeys along the Dalmatian coast (through land that is now divided unequally between Croatia, the Bosnian Serb Republic, and the patchwork government of Bosnia-Hercegovina), through the vainglorious, charming and not yet war-torn land of Montenegro, across the ghastly fields of Kosovo just as the Serbs withdrew before NATO forces, across Macedonia, then through parts of Eastern Europe that have been spared the advantages of Serbian leadership and thus remain peaceful and happy.
All through his travels, Winchester shows us the people who live in these lands, shares with us his bemusement at the human capacity to live around disaster and his shock and sorrow at our capacity to abandon our humanity when we go a-warring, to save our worst outrages for our close neighbors, and forget that Europe has been Christian for nearly 1800 years or, for that matter, what the word "Christian" means.
Winchester's command of the history of the area is intimidating and overpowering... he shows us entire worlds that we never suspected even existed... capital cities nestled in remote mountain summits and ruled by dynasties of hereditary bishops, places where there are two Orthodox churches vying for a shrinking pool of believers, customs sublime and gross.
I usually hesitate to award a perfect score to a book, no matter how well-written, because it's all too easy for a fellow author like myself to carp at shortcomings that are all too obvious to me - but Simon Winchester has defeated me. His is a complete book, and for me to criticize it would be sheer effrontery. Buy it, read it, and be delighted.
