Over the last few years there has been an influx of financial self-help books
on the market. Most of the books are speaking to people's woes over rising
prices and a shaky economic environment. 101 REAL MONEY QUESTIONS joins a
growing army of these sorts of books, but author Jesse Brown brings freshness
to this arena and approaches a difficult topic in an easy and understandable
manner.

In 101 REAL MONEY QUESTIONS, Brown sets up a dialogue between himself and
countless people with financial concerns and answers some basic and not so
basic questions on creating a sound financial foundation. His focus is
primarily on planning for the future via answering questions about retirement,
IRAs, estate planning as well as a plethora of other related topics. His
directives are written plainly without the overwhelming jargon that usually
accompanies discussions on portfolios and the like.

While the book was written in plain kind English minus the usual jargon, I
found myself a becoming a little frustrated over the absence of certain
information. The book is written from a point of view where the seeker of the
data already has knowledge of financial strategies as well as a financial base
to start from. I was looking for really practical common sense information on
how to get started. He talks about establishing a cash reserve, but how do
you truly do that when you are living from paycheck to paycheck? How do you
pay for insurance when you are living in an economy where rent and basic
living expenses are eating up the limited cash flow that you have?

101 REAL MONEY QUESTIONS answers many questions on building wealth once you
are on relatively stable ground. I think this book would be really helpful to
folks who have started to plan for their future in some way. However, I think
a more comprehensive guide is needed for people who are starting from square
one.

Book Description

This book examines the value proposition of technology and its relationship with business innovation, social preferences, and its role as a mechanism of labor savings or revenue generation. In the same style as his first book, Redefining Financial Services, the author combines empirical knowledge with an historical approach revealing the explicit nature of technological advancement while analyzing the implicit impact on the process of business. The book presents the reader with a question: does society shape technology or is technology shaping society?

5 out of 5 stars An eye opener.......2004-01-09

As an IT professional this book made me revist how my firm applies technology to business problems and opportunities. DiVann'a look at our relationship and facination with technology over 1000 years revealed to me that most of our work as technologists has been pooring old wine into new bottles. It was an interesting text that made me think.

                  Book Description

This volume is a supplement to the two previously published volumes (High Pressure Phase Transformations: A Handbook, Vols. 1 and 2.) The handbooks classify and systematize data on phase transformations of elements and compounds under high pressure (at least 0.1 GPa). A separate section with a complete list of references is devoted to each compound. Information on the behavior of the material under normal pressure is included, together with a critical analysis of experimental data on melting, first- and second-order phase transitions, crystal structures, and phase diagrams. Information on atmospheric pressure is also presented, including the temperatures of phase transitions, concommitant enthalpy and volume changes, densities and crystallographic data of modifications. Among the updates included in this volume is the data for 354 new compounds not listed in the previous handbooks, as well as addenda for 230 entries from the earlier volumes.

                  Book Description

The Wives of Short Creek is author Gerald Grimmett's second published novel. His first novel, The Ferry Woman, a novel of the Mountain Meadows Massacre, from the small, but highly regarded Limberlost Press, was received with critical acclaim, and selected by the Salt Lake Tribune as the Best Book of 2001 from and about the west. The first edition of 2,500 trade paper copies was sold within six months, and a second edition is planned.

Moving from the tragedy of his first novel, Grimmett has written a biting comedy about Mormon fundamentalist polygamy from the point of view of a seasick, love-starved sailor—the intrepid Heber Dean Smith. Heber Dean inherits a patch of Mojave desert in the town of Short Creek, and thinks he is headed for a dry paradise with sex for the asking. Not likely.

Heber eventually gains the trust of the secretive community, and marries Bishop Reuben Alldred-Price's widowed daughter Zinny. Heber and Zinny are happy until the Bishop decides it is time for Heber to take more wives to bring some balance to the demographics. The Bishop selects for Heber two prospective wives who are so bizarre in their behavior Heber Dean feels like the weddings would more like a hanging. Heber really loves Zinny and monogamy, but he also needs a lot of help from his hidden whisky still to get through his trials.

Central to this bitter-sweet comedy, is a search and chase for a secret last prophecy which it is hoped will legitimize their ongoing practice of plural wives, and in which the Prophet Joseph Smith Jr. foresees the main streaming apostasy of the huge Mormon Church in Salt Lake City. The church in Salt Lake would like nothing better than to burn and bury this purported prophecy, so they send their minions to thwart Heber's mission by any means necessary. This leads to the novel's climax in the infamous War of the Sticks. The implicit condemnation of polygamy is self-evident, but so is the fun.

To complicate Sheriff Heber Dean's life, the fictional Arizona Women's Alliance instigates a cunning infiltration of Short Creek by the beautiful Rose Lee, a bitter, recently excommunicated mainstream Mormon. Her mission is to pave the way to free the wives of Short Creek from their slavery and degradation, and to bring to them the breathy zest of freedom from their bondage in the strictly closed, Patriarchal society of Short Creek.

3 out of 5 stars Typos on every page.......2007-08-01

I was really looking forward to reading this book since I enjoyed Grimmett's "The Ferry Woman" so much. This one was OK - a somewhat comical (and fictional) look at the polygamist community Short Creek. Not sure that anyone unfamiliar with Mormon history or the various scandals of the church's past would think it quite as amusing as I did. The worst part of the book was the absolute horrendous editing. There were blatant typos on almost every page and that is not an exaggeration. It was hard to get into reading it because I'd get so distracted by all of the errors - there were entire words missing and it would take me a few moments to try to figure out what he was trying to say. I can't imagine why no one caught those major mistakes. That tainted my opinion of the story.

                  1 out of 5 stars Wacky & Delighful.......2004-10-15

"The cast of characters is wacky and delightful. If one mixed Robert Irvine (anyone else remember his series of mysteries featuring fallen Mormon detective Moroni Traveler?) with Tom Robbins and added a little Tony Hillerman, one might come up with Gerald Grimmett. He is a fine writer, witty and irreverent, who certainly spins an entertaining yarn."

5 out of 5 stars What were those 1 star REVIEWS all about?!!This book is 5***.......2004-02-09

I don't know what those 1 & 2 star reviews were about, but those people appearently did NOT read this very funny and highly researched book. If those reviewers had read this book they would have seen what a hilariously funny guy Gerald Grimmett is. Those badass reviewers obviously had an agenda of their own , they just want to disrespect the author(might they be wolves in sheeps clothing ?).
I would recommend this to every person who needs their spirits lifted and their funnybone knawed on.I had to make sure I had Depends handy. One funny character in the novel is Zeke Wilkes(a John the Baptist wanna-be)....How can one not laugh at the picture of an old man running around the desert in old fungi-ridden lion skin stealing dolly underwear off the line in the back-yard?
I learned a lot about present day Short Creek and the whole present day lds church. Mr. Grimmett certainly knows his stuff, and I would recommend this highly creative and funny book to any one.

                  1 out of 5 stars A Good Effort.......2004-01-19

I felt the book had potenetial but somewhere in the middle it started to get muddled. The overall premise is good and the characters were interesting but something was lost in the translation.I think maybe too much was going on with the main character. The plot was somewhat esoteric. The ending was a bit disappointing.Like I said it had potential but it needed some tweaking.

2 out of 5 stars light reading for the light headed.......2004-01-14

I found this book at the D.I. so I thought for 50 cents I would give it a try. The book is easy reading, though trite, I found the characters to be flawed and I must admit that the book is fiction. 100 per cent unadulterated fiction.

The author seems to have taken the anti Mormon rewrite of history and use it to suit his fairy tale of Mormon history.

I am not sutrprised that the author is an ex Mormon. Some of the most absurd have been written by alleged writers who did not for some reason or another choose to just let go.

I originally gave this book one star but will upgrade to "2" stars. One for spelling and one for at least getting the names right.

I think the author could be writing great english novellas

Simon Winchester, a British newspaper reporter for 30 years and the author of 13 books (including The Professor and the Madman), has turned his attention to the Balkans, an area he visited years ago on a road trip from Vienna to Istanbul--a journey he retraced in the spring of 1999. The Fracture Zone describes both of those trips, concentrating on the history and character of the region more than the recent war and its aftermath. Winchester has spent most of his career as a foreign correspondent, but his more recent occupations as historian and a writer for Condé Nast Traveler are in evidence here. Winchester's angle on the Balkans is unique and well written: those who have been bewildered at best and bored at worst by the Balkan conflict may find that The Fracture Zone captures their interest better than hundreds of news accounts of war atrocities. "Why is there, and seemingly always has been, this dire inevitability about the Balkans being so fractious and unsettled a corner of the world?" Winchester wonders aloud. That eternal question continues to plague world statesmen and, though not fully answered here, affords the opportunity for an interesting exploration.

                  Book Description

A True Portrait of One of the World's Most Chaotic and Beautiful Regions That Explains Why Violence Has Always Occurred There--And Why It May Continue For Years To Come

The vast and mountainous area that makes up the Balkans is rife with discord, both cultural and topographical. And, as Simon Winchester superbly demonstrates in this intimate portrait of the region, much of the political strife of the past century can be traced to its inherent contrasts. With the aid of a guide and linguist, Winchester traveled deep into the region's most troublesome areas--including Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Kosovo, and Turkey--just as the war was tearing these countries apart. The result is a book not just about war but also about how war affects the living. Both timeless and current, The Fracture Zone goes behind the headlines to offer a true picture of a region that has always been on the brink. Winchester's remarkable journey puts all the elements together--the faults, the fractures, and the chaos--to make sense out of a seemingly senseless place.

5 out of 5 stars The Author did a wondeful job!!.......2003-01-18

The book itself is wonderful and author does a wonderful job of explaining the years of conflict in the in this particular region of the world.

There are times particularly in the introduction when you want the author to shut up and get on with the story. Later on you see how much this one example(in the beginning) kind of weaves all of the points to come together.

Overall-Good book if you like history (and good journalism)

4 out of 5 stars An Enlightening Guide to a Shattered and Benighted Land.......2002-02-24

For a thousand years the Balkan peninsula has been the situs of vast cultural upheavals -- the sensibilities and hatreds of the Slavic peoples pushed and pulled and molded by the East and West, by Catholicism, Orthodoxy, Islam, Communism and Nazism. The result is a tragic legacy of manipulation, of hatred, of violence and of death.

Simon Winchester proves himself the perfect guide to this shattered and tragic realm. He is part History Professor, part Philosopher but always a masterful Storyteller. With this and his previous books (especially "The Professor and the Madman") he proves himself to be one of the most eloquent and gripping narrative writers working today.

                  Some other thoughts:

                  1. This book ought to be required reading for every American and a warning about the horrible consequences of hate. One of the greatest tragedies of the Balkan conflict is that, as Winchester puts it, "almost all the people who have been so horribly at odds with one another are all, in essential ethnic terms, the self-same people." And lest Europeans and Americans feel smug in their own situations, let them remember the calamities of Antietam, of The Somme, and of Auschwitz.

                  2. The smart reader will prepare himself or herself with two things before reading. First, a good map. The history of the Balkans is so utterly complex on many different levels, not the least of which is geographically. Second, a good dictionary. Not since Henry Kissinger have I read an author with his quiver so full of (to me) new and interesting words: e.g. from only the first fifty pages I noted, emollient, osmotically, ordure, gyre, excrescences, orotund, refulgent, meretricious, harquebuses, embrasures, barbicans and ravelins.

                  3. The editing of this book is horrendously sloppy -- it is an embarrassment to Harper Collins. I have never seen so many typographical errors, missing phrases and other stupid mistakes.

                  4. This is not Winchester's best work. The early chapters are among his best work, but the narrative loses significant punch beginning in chapter six, which deals with the authors time in Montenegro.

5 out of 5 stars Raconteur on a shelled-out road - Winchester on the Balkans.......2001-10-02

It's a pleasure to read reminiscences of masterful writers such as William F. Buckley (his sailing books have won him a well-deserved place of honor in sports writing) and Simon Winchester... and as he has seen Yugoslavia in her salad days, prosperous and peaceful, then returned to catalogue the horrors that followed her dissolution, Winchester is the perfect guide through that terribly unhappy place.

Winchester takes us with him on journeys along the Dalmatian coast (through land that is now divided unequally between Croatia, the Bosnian Serb Republic, and the patchwork government of Bosnia-Hercegovina), through the vainglorious, charming and not yet war-torn land of Montenegro, across the ghastly fields of Kosovo just as the Serbs withdrew before NATO forces, across Macedonia, then through parts of Eastern Europe that have been spared the advantages of Serbian leadership and thus remain peaceful and happy.

All through his travels, Winchester shows us the people who live in these lands, shares with us his bemusement at the human capacity to live around disaster and his shock and sorrow at our capacity to abandon our humanity when we go a-warring, to save our worst outrages for our close neighbors, and forget that Europe has been Christian for nearly 1800 years or, for that matter, what the word "Christian" means.

Winchester's command of the history of the area is intimidating and overpowering... he shows us entire worlds that we never suspected even existed... capital cities nestled in remote mountain summits and ruled by dynasties of hereditary bishops, places where there are two Orthodox churches vying for a shrinking pool of believers, customs sublime and gross.

I usually hesitate to award a perfect score to a book, no matter how well-written, because it's all too easy for a fellow author like myself to carp at shortcomings that are all too obvious to me - but Simon Winchester has defeated me. His is a complete book, and for me to criticize it would be sheer effrontery. Buy it, read it, and be delighted.

4 out of 5 stars A Book that Provokes Questions from the Reader.......2001-01-27

A very probing look into the Balkans, Winchester's book raises simple yet profound questions about the hatred between so many peoples in the Balkans. The author did a very good job of putting the smoldering anger and resentment in historical perspective taking us not just back to the Austria-Hungary and Ottoman empires, but even further back to the Byzantine empire! It is this historical perspective that makes the questions so well thought out. In the end, Winchester has no answers, and I found myself disappointed that I could not have simple answers to such difficult questions. I walked away from the book with a better understanding, but every bit as puzzled, as when I entered the book, so it has provoked me to look deeper into the subject. It has put me on a path to learn more about the region.

4 out of 5 stars The Balkans for beginners.......2000-10-20

Veteran journalist Simon Winchester retraces his steps through the Balkans 20 years after a brief vacation there, to rediscover a region where the geography is as dizzying as the political and ethnic agendas. His journey from Vienna to Istanbul encompasses the crisis in Kosovo and in a series of astute vignettes, Winchester meets some of the major players and the victims. All around him is a simmering cauldron of hatred which has spilled blood yet again and the issues provoke more questions than can ever be answered. Winchester has questions of his own, but he is unable to answer them in any depth. But then, most Westerners have also had trouble analysing the Balkan history of bloodshed. He is only skimming the surface here and for guidance refers to the great works of Nobel prize winner Ivo Andric, whose book Bridge On The Drina remains a classic text to understanding the background of Balkan turmoil. Unfortunately, Winchester departs Kosovo in June 1999, just after NATO enters the region to restore some semblance of calm. I wish he had remained to write about what happened next. The book fizzles a bit when he goes to Bulgaria. There is now a bewildering plethora of books on recent Balkan upheavals. Winchester's wry observations would serve well as a beginner's guide to one of the most troubled and fascinating places on earth.

                      Book Description

A thrilling synthesis of science and mysticism by a quantum physicist reared in the Hindu tradition with a thorough knowledge of Indian sacred literature. Goswami offers solid, scientific explanations for the concept of universal consciousness and the existence of mind beyond the function of the brain. Thoughtful readers will love his ingenious mix of data and ideas from Eastern philosophy, transpersonal psychology, and quantum physics to explore the scientific principles for why and how spiritual practice works.

4 out of 5 stars Consciousness--The ground of all being.......2007-08-12

Seventy years after the quantum revolution began, Amit Goswami peered through the visionary window to behold a truth that Eastern traditions such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism have known for centuries: "Consciousness is the ground of all being". For him this revelation synthesized the two disciplines of science and spirituality.

Traditional Western science has treated consciousness as an epiphenomenon of matter, an emergent property of the brain. But Goswami insists that this produces a paradox. If consciousness is necessary for decoherence, the process by which quantum possibilities become reality, how is it possible that consciousness can arise from the very material consciousness creates?

If however, we turn this idea on its head, and show that matter is an epiphenomenon of consciousness, then the paradox disappears. Matter is within consciousness. "We don't have consciousness, rather consciousness has us" (52). It is only because of our memory that we have a secondary awareness, which creates the illusion that consciousness is an individual experience.

A universal consciousness helps explain some quantum decoherence experiments in which a conscious observer has been illiminated from the experiment. For example, in an experiment called the "Quantum Pinball (Scientific American, November 1991) the results showed that just the mere possibility that knowledge could be gained, was sufficient to collapse the quantum potential into reality.
Another advantage emerges from the hypothesis that consciousness is the ground of all being. It once and for all relieves us of the anthropocentric burden that the univese was created just for us. It isn't our own consciousness that has brought us into being, but rather the result of the constant self-referential communication between universal consciousness and matter, in an endless scurring toward greater and greater complexity and meaning.

In the last portion of the book, Amit Goswami includes chapters on subjects such as reincarnation, angels, and quantum healing. If this makes you queasy, rest assured, Goswami is a physicist to the core. This book was well worth the read, and a very good follow-up to his book, "The Self-Aware Universe" (see my review on Amazon).
