    Book Description

The FASB Statements of Financial Accounting Concepts contains the full text of the Accounting Concepts issued to date. The existing concepts are intended to serve the public interest by setting the objectives, qualitative characteristics, and other concepts that guide selection of economic events to be recognized and measured for financial reporting. Unlike a Statement of Financial Accounting Standards, a Statement of Financial Accounting Concepts does not establish Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. Intended as a supplement to an intermediate, advanced, or accounting theory course taught at most four-year schools.

        Book Description

The first theoretical analysis of the Asian Financial Crisis--perhaps the single most important economic event of the 1990s--starts by presenting a factual and analytic overview of what happened. It goes on to consider why crisis turned into collapse, speculative attacks, and contagion and finishes with a round table discussion of policy issues. The distinguished contributors are from organizations including IMF, the World Bank and the Bank for International Settlements. This is vital reading for policy professionals as well as researchers and graduate students in a wide range of disciplines.

                Book Description

The globalisation of the world economy poses significant challenges for policy makers, regulators and legal professionals. The Asian and Brazilian financial crises have shown that difficulties in the banking sectors of some economies can have serious repercussions across world financial markets. It is clear that a sound legal infrastructure is crucial to promote financial stability in this global market. Particularly in the case of international bank failures, the need for harmonised and effective international insolvency procedures is becoming increasingly apparent. It is against this background that the Bank for International Settlements organised a workshop on International Bank Insolvencies in the summer of 1998. This unique work presents the edited workshop papers by expert lawyers from over twenty national central banks, the European Central Bank, the Basle Committee on Banking Supervision and the UN Commission on International Trade Law. Nineteen country reports provide a comprehensive overview of central banks and other institutions responsible for banking supervision and the co-ordination between authorities involved in insolvency procedures. The authors further discuss the instruments employed for crisis prevention and resolution and issues arising in the aftermath of a bank failure in the respective jurisdictions. In addition, twelve expert papers discuss issues ranging from specific national experiences to attempts at co-operation and harmonisation at regional and international level. The book further includes in annex the text of the UNCITRAL Model Law on Cross-Border Insolvency and the EC Finality Directive. This work constitutes an essential addition to every banking and insolvency law library and will be of great value to legal academics and practitioners, bankers, regulators and policy makers.

The primary purpose of this text is to provide introductory geology students - who have had little or no science background - with a better understanding and appreciation of geology. Thompson & Turk's MODERN PHYSICAL GEOLOGY, Second Edition, stands out through its early coverage of plate tectonics (Chapter 2), the inclusion of special topic areas, and its beautiful design and writing style. It offers a complete overview of all topics in physical geology, including the most recent developments and research in areas of climate change and environmental issues.

                        Book Description

Therapeutic Applications of Monte Carlo Calculations in Nuclear Medicine examines the applications of Monte Carlo (MC) calculations in therapeutic nuclear medicine, from basic principles to computer implementations of software packages and their applications in radiation dosimetry and treatment planning. With chapters written by recognized authorities in the field, the book covers the entire range of MC applications in therapeutic medical and health physics, from its use in imaging prior to therapy to dose distribution modeling in targeted radiotherapy. The contributors discuss the fundamental concepts of radiation dosimetry, radiobiological aspects of targeted radionuclide therapy, and the various components and steps required for implementing a dose calculation and treatment planning methodology in radioimmunotherapy. Several computer programs, such as MIRDOSE, MABDOS, and 3D-ID, are described and illustrated with some useful features and clinical applications. Other potential applications of MC techniques are discussed together with computing aspects of radiation transport calculations. The book is written for nuclear medicine physicists and physicians as well as radiation oncologists, and can serve as a supplementary text for medical imaging, radiation dosimetry, and nuclear engineering graduate courses in science, medical, and engineering institutions.

Jean "Stevie" Stevenson, the indomitable heroine of Coffee Will Make You Black, is back -- somewhat older and wiser, with some experience and a college degree -- diving headfirst into the hot tub, free love, yoga, and vegetarian lifestyle of 1970s San Francisco. I'm not gay, so I'm for sure not into reading about gay/lesbian encounters. While I enjoyed "Coffee Will Make You Black" b/c I'm a sucker for coming of age stories, I did not have the same satisfaction with this sequel. I understand the point Ms. Sinclair is trying to make with how even as adults we are all trying to find ourselves in this big world and while that's all well and good I could have done without the details of the love scenes and other encounters. For example, the scene where she's finger-f***ing some other woman was a little unnecessary.

                        5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2002-04-07

The title alone is a winner. This book offers a look from the same sex point of view. Love is love no matter what gender is the meaning that I received from the book. The title can be used in everyday life and should be everyone's motto. Stevie grows from a young college girl into a cofident and self-loving woman.

I loved "Coffee" so I picked this book up. I really liked it, and thought Sinclair showed a lot of courage in allowing Stevie to explore her sexuality in this way. Stevie's innocence is gone, but she's making choices and figuring things out on her own in much the same way she did in Coffee. Though this book may seem foreign to anyone who didn't grow up in the 70's, the feminist movement & post-60's San Francisco are so apparent in pop culture and history books that it will feel familiar none the less.

4 out of 5 stars Stevie Grows Up.......2000-11-21

I read this book only because I had to find out what happend to our protagonist Stevie as she grew up and came out. I was left hanging at the end of "Coffee Will Make You Black" which forced me to read this book.

This book deals with the pains and tribulations of coming out and finding oneself. Although a bit too idealistic, it still rings true here and there, and there are many interesting and diverse characters.

I moderately enjoyed this book, but don't have any current plans to read any more of Ms. Sinclair's books.

4 out of 5 stars Only a "FOOL" would pass this book up!.......2000-11-07

AIN'T GONNA BE THE SAME FOOL TWICE was a good sequel to COFFEE WILL MAKE YOU BLACK. Stevie's adventures in the land of race, the road, and her sexuality was amusing and provoking. The fact that she became honest with herself at the end make her journeys well worth the effort and worth my time reading.

Tolstoi, both as writer and thinker, exerted a compelling influence on English writers and social reformers. In turn, his own outlook on life and literary genius owed much to his keen response to British culture. This book is a collection of previously published articles -- supplemented by excerpts translated from Tolstoi's own writings -- conveying the extent of this dynamic interchange and the reciprocal benefit gained by Britain and Russia as a result of this remarkable symbiosis of cultures. An introduction by the editor traces the development of the interchange and places the various essays in their context.

                                  Book Description

What did the American Revolution mean to the ordinary soldiers who fought in it? Were they inspired by high-minded ideals of liberty and democracy, or were they seeking the material and practical rewards—bounties, land, and political advancement—that victory might bring them? We know much about the philosophical positions expressed by America's Founding Fathers, but the common people did not necessarily share the Founders' ideas. The Soldiers' Revolution looks to those who took up arms in Pennsylvania to reveal the rich tapestry of local interests that led a nation to war.

Many rank-and-file Revolutionaries left behind records of their experiences—everything from letters and journals to pension applications and loyalist claims. These records bring to light the soldiers' widely ranging ideas and opinions about the war, about themselves, about the enemy, and about the American nation. In Pennsylvania enlisted men defined their communities through various local interests. This general localism was, ironically, one of the few shared popular Revolutionary ideals. Moreover, the experience of military violence was critical in defining broader ideologies of citizenship that contributed to ideas of an emerging American identity—an identity that privileged white men above Indians, African Americans, and women. "Tories," meanwhile, were forced to shed their local perspectives and embrace other ideas in keeping with imperial interests.

The Soldiers' Revolution offers us a rare glimpse into the everyday world of the American Revolution. We see how the common experience of war drew soldiers together as they began the long process of forging an identity for a fledgling nation.

... because you can see some of the flaws in retrospect.

Arms & Influence is a little repetitive, but still a fascinating look at the way countries can use war, violence, threats and generally nasty behavior to get what they want. Schelling analyzes war in terms of "bargaining" - i.e. we'll hit you this hard now to show we mean it, and ten times harder if you don't give us what you want next week.

The theory explains a lot - but if you take it too far it can be too clever by half. One of his examples of a precise, well-considered and effective strike intended to deliver a clear message that an adversary would have to recognize is the Johnson Administration's retaliation for the Tonkin Gulf incident. The book was written in early 1965.

5 out of 5 stars subtle but very understandable.......1999-11-08

The greatest thing about this book is that Schelling makes it so readable. Unlike many scholar-type, who sometimes write in Martian, Schelling carefully dissect a delicate subject (arms, deterrence, and war) into explanable sections. The next thing that's good about this book is that it educates the readers on the subtlety in formulating responses to world events. People, who read this book, will watch the news or read the newspapers with a much more critical view of what decision makers are trying to do and possibly formulate your own judgement instead of listening to media pundits criticize any decisons ever made.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent read for anybody, regardless of your field........1998-10-31

I read this book for a political science class in advanced international relations theory. Even considering the topic of the class, I couldn't put this book down. Schelling writes for the average reader on subjects everybody can use in their daily lives, and applies them to international relations. Regardless of your area of study, this book offers something for everybody.

                                              Book Description

From riverine operations in the American Civil War and China in the 1860s to the major fleet engagements of the World Wars, plus more recent naval actions in the Falklands/Malvenas War and Gulf War, Lindberg and Todd methodically show how geography has shaped the strategy, tactics, and tools of naval warfare. Alfred T. Mahan was perhaps the first naval professional to recognize and acknowledge fully the influence of geography on navies and naval warfare. Many of his principles of seapower were inherently geographical and influenced both what kind of naval force a state would possess and how it would be utilized. In the time that has passed since Mahan made his observations, naval warfare and navies have experienced major technological changes, yet geographical factors continue to exert their influence on how navies fight, how they are structured, and the design of the ships that they deploy. After providing a comprehensive review of geostrategic theory and its application to naval warfare, the book is organized by major operational environments in which such warfare occurs--the high seas, littoral regions, and inland waterways. Lindberg and Todd illustrate how such geographical factors as distance, location, surface, and subsurface conditions influence naval operations, including fleet-to-fleet engagements, amphibious assault, coastal defense, logistical support, and riverine actions. A separate chapter takes an in-depth look at the ways in which geography influences navies themselves with issues such as primary mission type, force structure development, and ship design. Through the use of historical case studies, this volume applies long held geographical concepts to fundamental naval theories and practices to illustrate just how pervasive geography's influence has been during the past 140 years.

Tabari in this volume relays the information starting from the battle of ditch to conquest of Mecca. Various raids to neighbouring tribes are also included based various transmitions. These volumes of Tabari are source book for many investigators and books on Islam, historical view or religious. Although in important cases where the situation escalated to battle reason are given but in small raids Tabari provides no explanation and only says on such and such date so and so made a raid to so and so tribe.

Edelman, in the third of three books which discusses the Theory of Neuronal Group Selection, grapples with the fundamental neuronal architecture which comprises consciousness. This work is excellent, although the text becomes disappointingly vague about half-way through; intriguing theories are presented, but not supported, with the rigor pursued by Edelman in his earlier volume "Neuronal Darwinism.&quot

5 out of 5 stars Primer on Roadless Area Issue.......2004-03-11

Pezeshki's book provides a mesmerizing picture of the forces arrayed to destroy roadless areas - and their dependent, increasingly rare species - in the Clearwater National Forest, along with tragic background material on the irreversible damage done to Idaho public lands in the past by state and federal agencies charged with their management. He conveys on-the-ground experience and a love for Idaho wild country. With engaging narrative the author unforgettably presents the pristine nature of these precious areas and the limited time they have left to exist if citizens don't wake up to their imminent, taxpayer-subsidized ruin. If you are not already a wilderness/roadless area advocate, this book will light the fires within your soul.

4 out of 5 stars An honest perspective from a real person........1998-12-16

Pezeshki tells a compelling story in real terms without all the "woe is me" angst that discredits many environmental arguments. Pezeshki doesn't pull any punches either - Forest Service, Logging Corporations, Army Corps of Engineers, Politicians, Mainstream Environmental Groups, and even the readers get challenged.

The Holocost/Clearcut analogy toward the end of the book is thought provoking and will provide a good source for hours of campfire debate.

This is a good book for straightforward discussion of environmental conflict in the U.S.

                                                    5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......1998-10-01

If you consider yourself to be an environmentalist then this book is a must read. I have never seen anything published which so accurately describes the front lines of the environmental movement. I know many of the people involved in this book and I can say that from my experience the stories in this book are quite accurate as well as inspirational.

5 out of 5 stars Report from the battlefield: headwaters of the Columbia R........1998-04-22

An easily understood profile of the land management conflicts in the Clearwater River country of north Idaho over more than 25 years, Mr. Pezeshki profiles the place, agencies, characters and events that are shaping the land and waters. Having worked on the Clearwater N.F. as a fishery technician, I am pleased that someone has written such a book, and I can vouch for some of the characters profiled. Events such as tributary blowouts really happened, and will continue to happen without changing the focus of the agencies involved. Please read this book, and be part of the solution.

5 out of 5 stars Wild to the Last is a great contribution to conservation.......1998-03-29

Charles Pezeshki is one of those rare conservation writers who moves his readers to action. He writes with passion but does not take himself too seriously. Defending the last great places in American is inherently depressing, however, Pezeshki's passion for the Clearwater Country of Idaho gives one hope that individuals and groups of concerned citizens can make a difference.

Pezeshki compares favorably with such writer/naturalists as Rick Bass, David Petersen, and Dave Hughes. He does what many conservationists can not do; skillfully articulate why preservation of wildness and big country is important. His oral history of the key players involved in this great conflict is particulary profound.

Our children will thank Charles Pezeshki for his passionate defense of the last remaining wild portions of Idaho's Clearwater Country. He has made a difference.
