      Book Description

Addressing technology's impact on traditional clerical and decision-making accounting processes, the authors of Accounting Information Systems Cases and Readings have, through their experience in the field, compiled a casebook of current AIS cases. The cases—featuring undisguised companies, real companies whose identities are disguised in order to allow the case specifics to be geared to the classroom, and fictitious companies used as a gathering of separate, but real issues reflecting the authors' practitioner experiences— provide an effective method whereby readers can glean real-world insights and knowledge. AIS cases covered include Cougar Collection Agency (A & B), McKracklin Aerospace (A-B), State Parks (A-D), Carey Manufacturing (A, B & C), Health Corporation (A), and Intel's Operations Service Center. For accounting professionals and systems analysts.

            Book Description

During recent decades the welfare state has shown a growing interest in issues relating to market efficiency. Supply side economics, Reaganism and Thatcherism all pointed to the fact that welfare state arrangements had become a burden for society that prevented individuals to take action and frustrated markets to operate efficiently. Since then different fields of public policy have been confronted with trends like deregulation, privatisation and less government action. Education, transport, social security and pension schemes are just a few examples. The results of these operations have given rise to new questions concerning solidarity, equal treatment and all citizens getting their 'fair share' of welfare. This debate has become the more important as Europe is in a period of transition in which it has to decide on shaping its future by way of the European Union. Major contributions to the discussion with respect to the relation between market efficiency and equity come from lawyers and economists. That is why this volume of the series 'Balancing the welfare state' has brought together experts in both law and economics to discuss this relation from different angles and with respect to different actual problems in the late-twentieth century welfare state.

            Book Description

An irony inherent in all political systems is that the principles that underlie and characterize them can also endanger and destroy them. This collection examines the limits that need to be imposed on democracy, liberty, and tolerance in order to ensure the survival of the societies that cherish them. The essays in this volume consider the philosophical difficulties inherent in the concepts of liberty and tolerance; at the same time, they ponder practical problems arising from the tensions between the forces of democracy and the destructive elements that take advantage of liberty to bring harm that undermines democracy.
Written in the wake of the assasination of Yitzhak Rabin, this volume is thus dedicated to the question of boundaries: how should democracies cope with antidemocratic forces that challenge its system? How should we respond to threats that undermine democracy and at the same time retain our values and maintain our commitment to democracy and to its underlying values?
All the essays here share a belief in the urgency of the need to tackle and find adequate answers to radicalism and political extremism. They cover such topics as the dilemmas embodied in the notion of tolerance, including the cost and regulation of free speech; incitement as distinct from advocacy; the challenge of religious extremism to liberal democracy; the problematics of hate speech; free communication, freedom of the media, and especially the relationships between media and terrorism.
The contributors to this volume are David E. Boeyink, Harvey Chisick, Irwin Cotler, David Feldman, Owen Fiss, David Goldberg, J. Michael Jaffe, Edmund B. Lambeth, Sam Lehman-Wilzig, Joseph Eliot Magnet, Richard Moon, Frederick Schauer, and L.W. Sumner. The volume includes the opening remarks of Mrs.Yitzhak Rabin to the conference--dedicated to the late Yitzhak Rabin--at which these papers were originally presented. These studies will appeal to politicians, sociologists, media educators and professionals, jurists and lawyers, as well as the general public.

+AH4-To what extent should a liberal democracy tolerate extremist groups or hate speech? Are the media entitled to give terrorist publicity without the imposition of restraints to protect public safety? These are difficult, even painful issues for any free society, particularly so for Israel after the assassination of Prime Minister Rabin in November 1995. They are discussed in this collection of essays.

The essays cover a variety of related topics: the costs of tolerance, the treatment of speech+AH4-+AH4- advocating violence and of hate speech, the responsibilities of the media when faced with threats to give publicity to terrorism (articles by Joseph Eliot Magnet, David Boeyink and Edmund Lambeth), and the regulation of international communications, particularly on the Internet (Michael Jaffe). Some contributions approach the topic from a legal perspective (David Feldman, Owen Fiss, Irwin Cotler, Richard Moon, David Goldberg), others from that of political philosophy (Raphael Cohen-Almagor,+AH4-+AH4- L.W. Sumner, Sam Lehman-Wilzig). Many writers develop their theme from a Canadian, Israeli, British, or United States perspective, exploring the implications of recent developments within a particular jurisdiction.

Many essays implicitly share an underlying theme: liberalism carries significant costs. It is clearly articulated in the contributions of Frederick Schauer and Harvey Chisick. The public, rather than the victim, should be asked to bear the costs of tolerating harmful speech. +AH4-+AH4- In summary, this is a stimulating collection of essays on subjects of concern for all liberal democracies. Cohen-Almagor's introduction skillfully knits together the various themes as well as making some perceptive points of his own.+AH4-

                Book Description

Biological and medical research relies upon an integrated understanding of the molecules within cells and of the interactions between cells. This has imposed great demands on investigators. Being an expert in a relatively narrow area is no longer sufficient as many studies now require the
use of a wide range of techniques to provide the necessary integration. A lack of familiarity with the experimental possibilities can make such diversification difficult to achieve. This two volume set of Essential Cell Biology is designed to help researchers overcome these problems. It has not
been possible to include all of the techniques available in cell biology so the challenge was to identify those that might be most relevant to researchers who are new to this topic. We have tried to cover both traditional and more recent approaches. The theory and basic principles of each technique
are described, together with detailed protocols and advice for trouble shooting. Directions to more specialised techniques are also included. We hope the result inspires readers to experience the challenges and rewards of cell biology research for themselves and to contribute to the ongoing task
of understanding the life of the cell.

Essential Cell Biology volume 2 concentrates on understanding how the cell functions whilst Volume 1 focuses on techniques for studying cell structure. Volume 2 details the essential background information and protocols for investigating cell cell function, including, for example, investigations of
cellular transport, receptors and gene expression. This is the essential guide to cell biology for researchers new to the field.

This book provides an up-to-date presentation of a broad range of contemporary problems in inverse scattering involving acoustic, elastic and electromagnetic waves. Descriptions will be given of traditional (but still in use and subject to on-going improvements) and more recent methods for identifying either: a) the homogenized material parameters of (spatially) unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or b) the detailed composition (spatial distribution of the material parameters) of unbounded or bounded heterogeneous media, or c) the location, shape, orientation and material characteristics of an object embedded in a wellcharacterized homogeneous, homogenized or heterogeneous unbounded or bounded medium, by inversion of reflected, transmitted or scattered spatiotemporal recorded waveforms resulting from the propagation of probe radiation within the medium.

                    Book Description

This collection of classic papers in shock compression science makes available not only some of the most important classic papers on shock waves by Poisson, Rankine, Earnshaw, Riemann, and Hugoniot, which remain important references, but also some pathbreaking papers from the 1940s and 1950s on shocks in solids and fluids by such theorists as Bethe, and Weyl. Although their ideas and results remain of current interest, many of these papers have been hard to find, since the journals in which they were published are not available in many libraries. The editors have also translated papers written in French to make them accessible to a wider audience. This collection is thus not only a valuable historical resource but also a vital reference for those working in the field.

                    Book Description

In the last column of a job application, there's that tricky question: Reason for Leaving.

John Manderino has apparently had to puzzle over that one often and long. His answers are collected here in this hilarious novel-in-stories tracing the history of a guy trying to grow up job by job.

Delivery boy, altar boy, busboy, teacher, cotton picker, umpire, Zen monk—Manderino's protagonist tries on one hat after another, from Chicago to Arizona to a South Dakota reservation where he longs to be given an Indian name, "something like Many Roads, or Many Jobs."

Each story in this highly entertaining collection is complete in itself, yet Manderino has woven them into a seamless history that's hard to put down.

The author of Sam and His Brother Len and The Man Who Once Played Catch with Nellie Fox has once again given us a funny, moving portrait of a man's journey of becoming. Becoming what? The answer lies behind all his reasons for leaving.

John Manderino has a sharp eye for human foibles and his depictions of life in the workaday world will leave readers laughing long and loud.

My local bookseller -- the estimable Chris Bowe at Longfellow Books in Portland, Maine -- recommended this book by an author I hadn't heard of. What a delightful surprise! This light, good-hearted coming-of-age story told through a unique structure of employment mishaps (from delivery boy, age 12, to writer, age 30) is a constant pleasure, and contains the funniest, sharpest dialogue I've read in years. It's not a novel, however, despite what the cover says; it's a series of linked vignettes, and every single one of them sparkles. I LOVE this guy's prose--clean, clean, clean, with a musical flow: not a single thud in the entire book. What a shame that gems like this (small press, probably a short print run, no publicity) don't get to shine in a marketplace fogged over with subpar bestsellers.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Joy.......2005-05-20

This book is marvelous, funny, touching, engaging, and just a hoot! Something for everyone.

                        Book Description

This book analyses Fenian influences on Irish nationalism between the Phoenix Park murders of 1882 and the Easter Rising of 1916. It challenges the convention that Irish separatist politics before the First World War were marginal and irrelevant, showing instead that clear boundaries between home rule and separatist nationalism did not exist. Kelly examines how leading home rule MPs argued that Parnellism was Fenianism by other means, and how Fenian politics were influenced by Irish cultural nationalism, which reinforced separatist orthodoxies, serving to clarify the ideological distance between Fenians and home rulers. It discusses how early Sinn Fein gave voice to these new orthodoxies, and concludes by examining the ideological complexities of the Irish Volunteers, and exploring Irish politics between 1914 and 1916.

4 out of 5 stars A good book appealling to the inquiring mind of any child........1998-10-19

This is a good book for 3rd - 7th graders because its "strange but true" tidbit-based approach will appeal to any curious mind. What is particularly nice about the book is that it is NOT a haphazardly arranged collection of factoids, as so many kids science books are. Beres' book may provide information in small chunks, but the chunks build on one another, so after reading a chapter full of them you emerge with an understanding of the overall shape of earth science, for instance, or biology. It certainly isn't a textbook, but it will get readers interested in the way the world works and how scientists go about discovering those workings.

5 out of 5 stars A great collection of information about the human body..........2001-02-13

This is a wonderful book. I bought it for my six and nine year-olds, and we've had a lot of fun going through it together. It covers a lot of the science of the human body, and explains things well in a clear yet thorough way. There are over 100 facts and definitions of things covered; lots of "hands on" exercises; hundreds of line drawings and diagrams; and brief biographies of important scientists who contributed to the study of the human body.

All in all a great book chock full of info for kids, especially for the price.

                        5 out of 5 stars What a Great Book!.......2000-06-03

I have to say the truth, this book is great. In school I amlearning about health in science, this book gave me information I neverever knew. Also it is very interesting since I want to be a docter when I grow up. Who (my age) knows that you are taller in the morning then you are at night? This book also has a glossary in the back to tell you definitions of bold words in the book that you might of never heard of! All that is left to say is .......if you want to know facts about the HUMAN BODY this is the book for you.

It is good for reports, projects, homework and other educational needs for our growing minds. In conclusion i would like say that this book rocks in an educational way.

                          Book Description

In 1983, Genetics and Conservation was published to encourage the dissemination of knowledge regarding the application of scientific theory and research to conservation programs. It was also intended to encourage genetics research regarding population viability management needs that were prevalent at the time. Twenty years later the needs have not diminished. Despite its age, Genetics and Conservation still stimulates research and information translation for conservation applications. It also contributes historic perspective regarding progress in the field of conservation genetics. In the early and mid-1900s, numerous individuals who came from diverse backgrounds built the foundations of science applications in conservation. Though they are no longer with us, their contributions helped generate our own interests in genetic applications. The contributions of Archie Carr, Raymond Dasmann, John Eisenberg, Otto Frankel, Jack R. Harlan, Starker Leopold, Gene Namkoong, Ulysses Seal, George Wright and Sewell Wright remain essential in our work. Pivotal publications in the late 1970s and early 1980s, such as Otto Frankel and Michael Soulé's Conservation and Evolution and Michael Soulé and Bruce Wilcox's Conservation Biology, helped accelerate the integration of genetics into conservation applications. Over these last two decades, Genetics and Conservation accomplished its initial purpose. Its use persists in college seminars, field courses, and national and international ecologic programs. It is also used as a major planning and application reference by managers of refuges, parks, forests, reserves, ranches, aquaria, zoologic gardens and botanic gardens. This reprinting of Genetics and Conservation is ultimately an expression of professional values and of gratitude to those who have helped configure our current concepts of ecologically and culturally sustainable conservation. "Indeed, this book should be read and its message understood by everyone involved in biological conservation." American Scientist
