Among the numerous applications of the rare-earth elements, the field of catalysis accounts for a large number. Catalysis represents approximately 20% of the total market sales of rare earths worldwide. As a matter of fact two main applications have been prominent in the last decades: zeolite stabilization for fluid cracking catalysts, and automotive post-combustion catalytic treatment.

The oldest use of rare earths in catalysis deals with the structural and chemical stabilization of the zeolites for petroleum cracking applications. For a long time this has been an area of application for non-separated rare earths. The addition of several percent of rare earths in the pores of the zeolite results in a strong surface acidity, which is essential for an efficient conversion of high-weight molecules into lighter species, like low-octane fuel, even in the very aggressive conditions of the petroleum industry.

The popular demand for high-quality air in spite of the traffic congestion in large cities resulted in larger and larger constraints in the emission exhaust from cars. Thus highly efficient catalysts have had to be designed, and due to the combination of its redox properties and very good thermal stability, cerium oxide has been since the beginning, early in the 1980s, a major component of the three-way catalysts (TWC) now used in all modern gasoline cars.

The future of rare earths in catalysis is probably bright. The fact that approximately 400 patents are applied for yearly in the area since 1992 is an illustration of a very active area. Usage of rare earths in catalysis is expected to grow due to their highly specific properties. Instead of the physical properties used in electronic applications, one deals now with redox properties, water and thermal stability, coordination numbers and so forth. The rare earths are so specific in these properties that their use can hardly be avoided, not only for the beauty of academic studies but also for the development of industrial applications with immediate influence on everyday life.

Careful control of the synthesis conditions and the definition of optimum composition in each case are the keys to the preparation of highly performing compounds for catalytic applications. They must actually be considered as high performance products with functional properties, and not just chemical species.

Chapters devoted primarily to catalysis have been published in earlier volumes of the Handbook. In this volume several more are added. The first is an extension of the earlier chapter 43, on interactions at surfaces of metals and alloys, to reactions such as hydrogenation, methanation, ammonia synthesis, saturated hydrocarbon reactions, dehydrogenation of hydrogenated materials, hydrodesulfurization, and carbon monoxide oxidation. The second chapter reports on the wide variety of catalyzed reactions involving metals and alloys in the innovated form of metal overlayers or bimetallic compounds with some transition metals produced from ammonia solutions. This is followed by a chapter on catalysis with mixed oxides usually having perovskite or perovskite-related structures.

Then follows a comprehensive discussion on the background and current role of cerium oxide and associated materials for post-treatment of exhaust gases for pollution control. These three-way catalysts (TWC) are designed to render harmless the CO, NOx, and unburned hydrocarbons from internal combustion engines. The next chapter considers the wide field of zeolite catalysts containing rare earths from their historic use in petroleum refining in the 1960s to other petrochemical and fine chemical applications today. The final chapter documents the use of the triflates (the trifluoro-methane-sulfonyl group which is a hard Lewis acid in both aqueous and organic solutions) as versatile catalysts in carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions. Their stability in the presence of water, in spite of their being hard Lewis acids, enhances their growing usefulness.

A powerful narrative.......2004-12-23

I picked up this book expecting evil kings, magic swords, etc. Then I kept reading anyway. I found The King's Evil to be absolutely compelling. The best books are the ones where you wrap yourself in the narrative and you can feel the book's provocative ideas poking around in your gray matter, forcing you to think, ponder, consider - and, for that matter, to consider ideas that are the kind of stones you'd rather leave unturned. The book was disturbing at times, and the ending left me a little shaken. But with so many books out there that aren't worth the paper they're published on, to find one that provoked so many emotional responses was a real treat. I highly recommend this book, and especially recommend it for anyone about to take a long flight. You'll sink into your seat and not look up until the book is finished. Be warned: this is not brain candy; it's a full course meal.

History Wraped As A Mystery.......2002-04-24

This is an exceptionally fine account of the recent sucessful peace process and the role played by author-Congressman Peter King. The novel has a thinly disguised Peter King-like character who is a congressman from Seaford, New York (King's home base) collaborating with Bill Clinton to solve the fratricidal war in Northern Ireland. Interspersed with this very fine history are mysterious murders which impact upon the congressman's chances of re-election. ----The dialogue which author King provides is top notch. You can almost hear the brogue as the main actors meet to discuss the cliff hanger of a peace negotiation. --
The political dialogue is almost as good. The book is well worth reading. I suggest that author King use the historical material, in this mystery novel, as the foundation for a serious history of the recently successful detente in Ireland. King might also think of applying his many and obvious talents to the current Middle East crisis.

Entertaining and informative.......2004-07-30

At last I was able to find a book about espionage that could keep me awake after 30 minutes of reading late in the night. The topics include a wide range of operations, some well known and some others not (like the Israelis' succesful attempt to purchase 200 tons of uranium from Belgium through a German firm in 1968 in order to build their nuclear arsenal), the writing style is simple but excellent and Volkman knows well how to keep the reader fixed. Surely, some subjects deserved to be better analyzed in greater details, but the book is only an introduction to the espionage operations and it must be considered as such. It certainly fired my interest!

I Spy.......2002-10-24

This book is basically a series of short stories dealing with major spy operations, mostly involving World War II. The stories are interesting and well written but there is a certain similarity and synergism to the stories that does not come out well in this format. Also, the author gives compelling evidence that Amelia Earhart was on an espionage mission when she disappeared but the story leaves you wanting more.
I would use this book as an introduction to this genre and if you are interested there are a number of novels dealing with the individual stories. A number of books have been written about the Walker spy ring as well as other spy operations.

A Good Book But.......2002-05-08

While I thought this was a good book and covered some very interesting topics I found myself a bit disappointed that the stories did not delve deeper into what they initially touched on. I would have enjoyed this more had the book been, say, three times as long and the stories gone deeper. I finished each chapter, or case, realizing that this was quite interesting and insightful to what had happened, many times in a historical concept. But found myself wondering about the little intricacies that would have been necessary to pull these capers off.

This book is would be a good start to preview some espionage cases and pick the ones you like to research further.

Very Good Book.......2001-08-27

Very well written. The pages fly by. Gives breezy summaries of some of the leading espionage capers in modern times. It was a joy to read.

Great book on espionage/ history/ mystery.......1998-10-02

I have read a number of books dealing with some of the same cases Volkman describes. Volkman is not only easy to read, but also does a great job presenting the facts of the case, the milieu of each case, and how each case affected history. He describes, somewhat, the mindset of espionage officers who sometimes prefer quantity over quality, and tradecraft and history as incidental to the cases. He includes some photographs and a helpful index. He often throws in details I don't remember seeing in other more detailed and lengthy works.
Some of the cases Volkman writes about are the "Trust" operation (early Soviet sting of anti-Soviets), Cuban doubling of US agents, British doubling of Nazi agents (Double Cross), code-breaking, atomic bomb secrets, the Wallenbergs in WWII, WWI German sabotage in U.S., the Angleton/Philby mole affair, etc.
Volkman is both willing and able to point out each country's successes and failures -- even when success is based on happenstance and failure is based on incredibly poor judgment.
Here's one passage: "[in 1978], Hu Simeng worked for the Chinese, who did not know that she also worked for the East Germans, who did not know that she was a Chinese asset, but who did know that she worked for the CIA, which didn't know she also worked for both the Chinese and the East Germans. The material she provided the Chinese was in fact East German and KGB disinformation, but the Chinese knew that, so they provided disinformation for Hu Simeng to give to the East Germans...."
Criticisms include that he occasionally reaches too facile a conclusion (Wallenberg was killed by Soviets in 1947 instead of the lengthy imprisonment other sources describe), and at least one minor factual error (the bomb "Fat Man" was dropped on Nagasaki, not Hiroshima).

In sum, an excellent book for anyone mildly interested in the topic, or very interested.

This is a very readable overview of the subject...one that many of the early boomers ought to read to understand where we were coming from and where we ended up (so far)...it is complete, interesting and a fascinating analysis...well worth a few hours of your time. It will give you guidelines for further research. I recommend it highly.
