Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Top quality handbook.......2001-02-18

Gives a solid summary of most important parts of running AP operations. The case studies make the book very clear. For new controllers this would be a really good addition to your bookshelf.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the main issues in A/P.......2000-09-14

This is probably the best (and only?) book available that gives a detailed overview of A/P procedures. It is especially helpful for those who need to design new policies to address difficult problems. For example, the book gives a very good explanation of procurement cards (p-cards), how to reduce T&E costs, and how to choose and hire new A/P personnel. In other words, it covers just about all of the bases. The only area the book doesn't cover is specific software packages, but I think that is beyond the scope of the book's title, and there are many other resources that have information accounting software. Potential buyers should note that there are annual supplements that update this book, and it may be worthwhile taking a look at them as well. Technology causes so many changes, that some business ideas are out of date within a few months, so you might want to make sure you have the most current information.

3 out of 5 stars A Valuable Resource.......2000-05-12

This book puts forth a valuable resource for responsibilities that fall under the accounts payable umbrella. The book, through good outlined topics and case studies, shows how a company can save money, maintain internal control, upgrade its systems, as well as retail professionalism of the department. The book includes an excellent division of topics within, which are pertinent to those who are involved with the day to day running of the accounting manager and accountants.

5 out of 5 stars All you could ever need to know about A/P.......1999-03-26

Really interesting way to organize and understand accounts payable. I'm going to suggest that my company use this book as a tool for our employees. Every detail is covered with simple to implement instructions. Also great as a reference tool. And the best thing is that it is easy to read!

      Book Description

The 2003 Cumulative Supplement includes new information on using statements, filing, 1099s, sales and use tax, and defenses against check fraud. Also included are the results of a recent survey showing the numerous ways accounts payable associates at companies of all sizes are using the Internet. One of the most interesting features in this supplement are the case studies, featuring a myriad of companies taking advantage and utilizing the latest technology to improve their operations and develop a paperless accounts payable department.

These are demanding times for workers everywhere and those in the accounts payable profession may be challenged more than some of their peers in other more established professions. The new tools and techniques discussed in this supplement will help them meet those challenges, or should we say, opportunities.

This is a fantastic book for those interested in a critique of the performance of the law. If you are interested in victimology it speaks with thick theory of the experience of legal process for the non legal person.
It is also great for those interested in taking an interdisciplinary look at legal process, especially if interested in theories of performativity and semiotics.

            Book Description

How can the history of birth weight add to our knowledge of women's living conditions in the past? In this study of newborn weight and economic growth in Boston, Dublin, Edinburgh, Montreal, and Vienna between 1850 and 1930, W. Peter Ward explores the relation between infant size, economic development, and living standards of working-class women in the industrializing West.

Drawing on clinical records from urban maternity hospitals and outpatient services, Ward compares birth weight between cities and traces changes in fetal size during a period in which some cities experienced dramatic economic development while others stagnated. Because fetal growth is strongly affected by maternal nutrition, Ward's research sheds new light on the well-being of working-class women whose living conditions have long been obscure and exceedingly difficult to examine.

This book will interest social and economic historians, as well as scholars of women's studies and the history of medicine, and its lessons on the distribution of social benefits during economic change have immidiate relevance for today's developing countries.

                    Book Description

When Wesley Lloyd Springer passed away, he left his proper Southern wife two legacies. The first, as befits a gentleman of means, is the whole of his sizeable estate. The second, so astonishing thereupon hangs this wonderful and witty tale.

Miss Julia, recently bereaved and newly wealthy widow, is only slightly bemused when one Hazel Marie Puckett appears at her door with a youngster in tow. But this perfectly practiced composure is quickly reduced when Hazel Marie unceremoniously announces her intentions: the child is Wesley Lloyd's bastard son and, since the man left her penniless, she's leaving little Lloyd in Miss Julia's care. Suddenly, this longtime church member and pillar of her small community finds herself in the center of an unseemly scandal -- and the guardian of a wan nine-year-old whose mere presence will turn her life upside down.

With razor wit and perfect Steel Magnolia poise, Miss Julia speaks her mind indeed -- about a robbery, a kidnapping, and all the other disgraceful goings-on that are precipitated by her husband's death. Fast-paced and charming, with a sure sense of comic drama and a cast of crazy characters, this beguiling novel will delight readers from first page to last.

5 out of 5 stars So Fun & So Funny..........2007-09-30

This series is so much fun. Each book is written in such a manner that they are very easy to read. While some of the antics may be unbelievable, you must remember that it is fiction and there always lies some truth, even in fiction. In every small town in the south there is a "cast of characters." Ms. Ross just brings them to life and adds a little zip. Even in our modern age there still are people out there with old fashion values. It is refreshing to be reminded of that once in a while.
Ross' details are so vivid that you can visualize Miss Julia walking across the yard to the church to have a "few words" with her pastor. You can feel her embarassment when something "unmentionable" is mentioned in her presence.
I hope that there will be many Miss Julia books to follow.
Recommended for anyone who likes a little fun in their reading.

finally I am able to give a book a high rating! I've been in a slump with the last few books that I've read, but Miss Julia is a great read. I stayed up til 2am trying finish. Everytime I try to put it down, it kept calling me. The thing I like most about Miss Julia is she definetely speaks her mind, just think of your southern belle grandmother...a kidnapper and an accused nymphomaniac...oh my! I can't wait to read Miss Julia's next adventure.

In this ambitious work, Barbara Ehrenreich offers a daring explanation for humans' propensity to wage war. Rather than approach the subject from a physiological perspective, pinpointing instinct or innate aggressiveness as the violent culprit, she reaches back to primitive man's fear of predators and the anxieties associated with life in the food chain. To deal with the reality of living as prey, she argues that blood rites were created to dramatize and validate the life-and-death struggle. Jumping ahead to the modern age, Ehrenreich brands nationalism a more sophisticated form of blood ritual, a phenomenon that conjures similar fears of predation, whether in the form of lost territory or the more extreme ethnic cleansing. Blood Rites: Origins and History of the Passions of War may not offer a cure for human aggression, but the author does present a convincing argument for the difficulties associated with achieving peace.

                      Book Description

An ALA Notable BookA New York Times Notable BookIn Blood Rites, Barbara Ehrenreich confronts the mystery of the human attraction to violence: What draws our species to war and even makes us see it as a kind of sacred undertaking? Blood Rites takes us on an original journey from the elaborate human sacrifices of the ancient world to the carnage and holocaust of twentieth-century "total war." Sifting through the fragile records of prehistory, Ehrenreich discovers the wellspring of war in an unexpected place--not in a "killer instinct" unique to the males of our species but in the blood rites early humans performed to reenact their terrifying experience of predation by stronger carnivores. Brilliant in conception, rich in scope, Blood Rites is a monumental work that will transform our understanding of the greatest single threat to human life.

5 out of 5 stars on the origins of war.......2006-08-31

Blood Rites is a book about the origin of war. The author's thesis is that the origins of war stem back to a time when humanity was the prey of large animals. Eventually humans organized and developed weapons to fight off predatory animals but the memories of being prey lived on in us and manifested itself in sacrifice, human and otherwise and finally, up to this day, war. In the process of explaining the above the author goes into the history of war, writing of a time when the making of war was a sacred kind of thing reserved for the elite of each society and about the democratizing effect modern weapons had on war, first making the lower soldiers such as archers more important than the knights and samurai and then with the advent of guns making the idea of a knight or samurai class completely obsolete. Finally we enter modern times with nationalism forming the identity of each group of people and hence what we fight over. Although much is made of the actions of male soldiers the author emphasizes that war is a need of humankind. She points out that facing a common enemy brings us all together and that woman are as eager to send their sons to war as men are. I enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot about the practice of war. In the end she brings up the anti-war movement and says that this movement is fighting it's own kind of war. I found this a kind of depressing point to make. I wonder if we can ever get over our need to have an enemy, that need to be preyed on that this book is ultimately about.

5 out of 5 stars War at the Heart of the Human Enterprise.......2006-05-30

In this deep and meticulously researched treatise on the origins of war Barbara Ehrenreich argues that 1.In our earliest history we were scavengers with no good defense mechanism, hardly the top of the food chain. 2.When humans developed the brain power to become an apex predator the wound inflicted by being a prey animal formed the basis of the first religious ceremonies as small bands of humans re-enacted the trauma of the predator prey relationship in sacrificial blood rites. 3.That about 12,000 years ago at the end of the Pleistocene and the beginning of the agricultural revolution the large prey that consumed the attentions of the most violent segment of society had been all but hunted out. 4.Putting these men to work as warriors to replace their hunting niche was adaptative at the time. 5.War began as an organized human enterprise about 12,000 years ago as these new warriors captured people from other tribes to use in the blood rites and for slave labor.6.Finally, the fact that war was and is a social construct makes it no less real and no less dangerous as this formerly adaptative behavior has become inextricably intertwined with every aspect of our human lives over the last 12 millennia. In fact it has become the center of the human enterprise. Looking at the problem of war from the above perspective should alert those of us in the peace movement to the profound psychological transformation that must take place before we can make in headway at all. The fact that this close inspection of the earliest history is so timely today just proves Ehrenreich's central thesis as to the madness and intractability of war.

5 out of 5 stars War, the Predator Beast.......2005-11-10

I loved Nickel and Dimed but was disappointed in For Her Own Good. Barbara Ehrenreich is a prolific writer and, I guess, not everything can be a gem. Blood Rites is well researched and exciting reading. Ehrenreich attacks the nature and origins of War, a subject on which she is admittedly not an expert. She brings a fresh eye, excellent research skills and the ability to put her conclusions in clear and compelling language.

Her key conclusion is that war grew out of our early experiences as prey turned predators. I don't know if that is as revolutionary an idea as she claims, but she convinced me. War is a religious experience based on the blood sacrifices of early humans to propitiate predator gods. It evolved with human society and now serves the new religion of nationalism, known in the US as patriotism.

While it is a human creation, like Frankenstein's monster, it has taken on a life of it's own and has become the new Beast. It is so enmeshed in our consciousness and culture that we may not be able to stop it. We find ourselves throwing young men and women into its merciless maw at a rate that makes even the bloodiest ancient rites seem tame in comparison.

Ehrenreich draws us to that frightening conclusion and then, apparently in search of a happy ending, suggests that perhaps the modern anti-war movement will grow powerful enough to actually put a stop to it; the war against war serving as the new but benign secular "religion".

                      3 out of 5 stars mostly speculation.......2004-10-15

An imaginative attempt to understand the origins of war, an essay that relies primarily upon the author's sensitive, and often sensible, imagination.

The book's style favors an irritating, superfluous, and promiscuous use of quotation marks when not actually quoting. Thus, she places quotation marks around Long Gray Line and drive, for example. By frequently doing this, she distracts the reader from her argument.

4 out of 5 stars Very good. Is it too broad?.......2004-05-23

Considered in its own narrowest terms -- a genealogy of the passions surrounding the human practice of war -- this is a compelling read. One can see this work as a real-world application of E.O. Wilson's idea of Consilience, as Ehrenreich uses her training in biology to elucidate and inform what is conventionally seen as a question for the humanities.

Starting from biology, Ehrenreich calls on experts from many disciplines, "soft" and "hard," as she lays out her case. This is both promising and perilous. A great deal of reading and study has gone in to this book, as is evident from her many citations. It would require an expertise deeper and broader than mine to assess whether she has truly "done her homework." What I found lacking, at times, was a sense of the contrast between her thesis and what had come before it. Is she synthesizing the likes of Toynbee, Weber, Fichte, Hegel, and the many others she mentions, or is she overturning them? I did not always get a clear sense of where previous thinkers had gone wrong on the topics she addresses.

In the end, this is not a damning criticism; a reader geninely interested in the issues covered in this book will find a deep mine of additional reading in Ehrenreich's index and bibliography. This book is represents a seemingly fresh start on a matter of great human importance.

                      Book Description

Are scientific expert witnesses partisans, or spokesmen for objective science? This ambiguity has troubled the relations between scientists and the legal system for more than 200 years. Modern expert testimony first appeared in the late eighteenth century, and while its use steadily increased throughout the nineteenth century, in cases involving everything from patents to X-rays, the respect paid to it steadily declined, inside and outside of the courtroom. With deep learning and wry humor, Tal Golan tells stories of courtroom drama and confusion and media jeering on both sides of the Atlantic, until the start of the twenty-first century, as the courts still search for ways that will allow them to distinguish between good and bad science.

5 out of 5 stars A brilliant and important book.......2004-10-29

We have all seen the dismaying spectacle of partisan scientific experts testifying in court in support of whichever side hires them. Pundits and politicians decry what they call "junk science" in the courts, suggesting sweeping judicial reforms. It's natural to assume that this is a new phenomenon. In this brilliant book, Golan shows that the place of scientific experts in the courtroom has been problematic and disputed for generations. Golan describes centuries of the complicated, changing relations between Anglo-American courts and scientific establishment. He demonstrates the ways in which each of these two central institutions in modern society - the legal systems and science - have consistently used their interaction to define themselves and each other. Each of these institutions is ostensibly devoted to generating truth, but each in a different way and with different criteria. Through studying the constant interplay of these two institutions, Dr. Golan sheds enormous light on the way each of them actually functions. It's incredible that so important, fruitful and suggestive a research project could have been overlooked until Golan wrote this book.

This is one of the most important books in years in both history of science and history of law. Golan also writes beautifully, so it's a pleasure to read.

This is a specialistic book: description and usage of ancient mathematical instruments. The book is the reprint of a book originally printed in 1770.

There is a long list of intruments, from slide rules to sectors, from astrolabes to quadrants and sundials

To me reading the this book was very interesting. I was able to make a sector and to use it for various calculations, understanding "by living" how drawing at that time was a way to execute calculations. There is a chapter entirely written by Stone and added to Bion original book on eclipse calculations using the sector.

If you are a slide rule collector this is a view on a time where the slide rule didn't ruled!

                                Book Description

In order to assess the health and environmental effects of a chemical, you need to determine the exposure of the chemical to sensitive organisms as well as to assess the likely effects. The chemicals in Volume V of the Handbook of Environmental Fate and Exposure Data for Organic Chemicals set are mostly solvents and cover many of the natural products and hydrochlorofluorocarbons and hydrofluorocarbons being considered as replacements for harmful chlorinated solvents and chlorofluorocarbons. The chemicals are listed in alphabetical order by their most easily recognized names. A cumulative index allows you to look up each chemical by chemical name synonym, Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) number, and chemical formula. Like all of the volumes in the series, this new volume details how individual chemicals are released, transported, and degraded in the environment, as well as how they are exposed to humans and environmental organisms. Features o Provides useful information for hazardous waste cleanup o Helps you to make exposure assessments o Provides workplace exposure and ambient monitoring data as well as detection in foods o Includes information on environmental persistence and transport o Includes highly reliable data prepared by a well-known firm in environmental fate
