impossible book.......2003-12-03

As a graduate student in accounting, I've found this book to be the most difficult and the most frustrating to read amongst my collection. This book is certainly not helpful to visual learners as there is mostly very dull text explanation of the subject material. Also, the few in-chapter examples worked out are very difficult to decipher and are poorly explained, so you're left on your own to learn how to do the end of chapter problems.

Finally a great book on Advanced Accounting.......2001-06-27

I have never come across a texbook that makes consolidations easy----until now! It seems that most advanced accounting texts are written by Ph.D's to impress other Ph.D's. This one is different. It actually explains in a concise manner all important aspects of advanced accounting in a way that is easy to understand and apply. Unfortunately, it was written in 1995 and obviously doesn't contain some of the more recent exposure drafts on consolidations and derivative accounting for foreign exchange forward contracts.

This book is full of useful information on triazine herbicides ranging from an article about the assessment of different climate patterns and soil types for atrazine movement to groundwater to an article about the role of Fisher 344 vs. Sprague-Dawley rats' reproductive patterns in the appearance of mammary tumors. Unfortunately, over half of the citations for the toxicological studies were from sources that were not peer reviewed. Furthermore, an odd citation style was used for many chapters in which the article title was not included in the citation. The book is clearly from a pro-pesticide use position, especially indicative in the first section on economics. However, setting this bias caveat aside, the book is an achievement in putting together many pieces in the triazine herbicide story: its history and use in agriculture; its water contamination routes and degradation products, its metabolites in aquatic organisms, animals and humans; and its possible impact to those exposed.

Gus Openshaw was a cat food cannery worker working "the worst stinking job you can get" when a super sized sperm whale with a B-shaped scar on his head ate Gus's wife, kid, and right arm. The whale got away, but only for the time being. With his life insurance settlement, Gus sets out on a voyage of revenge. He posts his captain's log and ruminations on life in a web log, the entries of which make up the book Gus Openshaw's Whale-Killing Journal.

Gus's two-month ocean odyssey is a whirlwind of zany adventures told in smart prose and accompanied by scrimshaw illustrations. At one point, Gus gives a detailed physical description of the criminal whale, and the harpooner/scrimshawist on staff whips up a police scrimshaw sketch of the alleged murderer. The reader is also treated to rum-fueled scrimshaws of female vixens along with portraits of the many madcap characters encountered during the journey.

Thomson's sophomore is a 5-star work of fiction, hands down, but it does follow a pattern of crisis / almost dying / alive / good news / super-bad news / laugh-out-loud funny scene / surely-they-will-die!! / hope / possible escape / alive / bad news, all of which are executed repeatedly in a random order. Who knew that Internet exchanges, renegade military forces, F-15 fighter jets, robotic armies, pirates, drug dealers, lost European colonies, and icebergs would be involved in a modern-day whale hunt? Wireless internet is a key plot device, one that works both for and against our renegade whale-hunting crew.

Laughs Ahoy!.......2006-04-20

Okay, sorry about the cheesy review title, but as my friend, Herm Melville said, this is the best "guy-tries-to-get-revenge-against-a-whale book" published in 155 years. So I got carried away.

Our Story: Gus Openshaw is a cannery worker/blogger who has never read MOBY DICK. He is seeking revenge against the darned whale that ate his right arm and his family, and Gus relates his tale in the form of a blog recounting his battles with the elements, mutineers, and litigators.

The plot's not just an excuse to trot out absurd action and boisterous humor, although it does that too. It's actually a pretty ingenious maritime story, and it ends up doing comic takes on a multitude of genres. Plus, it has pictures!

Extra Credit for the remote controlled giant squid robot. This book was funny enough for me to search out Thomson's previous novel. If it's only 5/6ths as funny as this one, it will be worth the effort.

Obsolete.......2001-01-12

This is a civilian reprint of the 1983 ST31-91B. The issue version with it's waterproof pages is a collectors item and not worth much else. Both versions are now very outdated in much of their treatment and management of illness/injury. Frankly when I first got the book in 1983, I didn't find it's sparse outline presentation of information very useful. You can find more current information, better presented in some of the newer books on Wilderness Medicine

I was a medic in the 82nd Airborne a few years after this book was published. I found it to be invaluable for review of proceedures that I had been taught in regular Army training. Like the Ranger Handbook, it is not meant to be the primary learning source, but rather a review of things a soldier had already be trained to do. Also like the Ranger Handbook, it accomplishes this purpose extremely well. It would've been of even more use, had I been an 18D - Special Forces Medic

I first came across this book while training with some Army special forces and was immediately impressed. Anyone who anticipates being in a situation where medical care would be difficult to procur, ie.. a long hunt or a sailing trip, would do well to pack this book among their gear.

Biblical history documented by secular science.......2006-04-09

A major league biblical analysis of more than 10,000 years of historical, astronomical events verified with scientific theory/research from the works of Immanuel Velikovsky...by far the best break down of biblical historical events from mainly Genesis and Exodus with a sprinkling from other passages, that I've read. These passages selected, are separated and sliced into detail and brought to life from the classic biblical analogs... then the mega history is brought forward and presented for presentation. You will see the parallel events today. There are three major players brought to the scenes from the authors interpretations focusing on 4000B.C....The Adams Group family, The Altaic Ringers, and The Sun Children.

This first group reportedly got caught up in the cold cataclysm of the Altaic ring (near Moscow) and suffered to a point where it weighed heavily on the type of individual that his current descendents are. There is very little difference in the classic Adam and the psuedo modern Adam although there are exceptions...

When the Adams group recovered he along with the other browned Altaic ringers (too long away from home to remember their home training) to the southeast left for survival purposes and met up with the Arameans, eventually meeting with the Sun Children in the fertile valley's of the south known as the Fertile Crescent Valley and the Nile Delta (the garden of Eden), where the triple A group showed their true colors. see page 121....They were not liked and were thrown out of these valleys frequently or whenever, the last group, the Sun Children, whose civilization was being wrecked, decided it was time for a good a#@^&% whippin as the current kemetic history has shown several times, the last being under the family leadership of Shabaka, Pianky, Tirhaqa....

The point of this mental exercise ...to show that "the cultural norms of behavior can be traced to early physical environmental conditions of various cultural groups"....the whole point being that your past can provide guidance for your future, in this case, the message is for the militarily defeated Sun Children.
