I PURCHASED THIS BOOK AND IT SEEMS TO BE GOOD EXCEPT THAT WHEN THE AUTHOR REFERS TO THE "RULE OF 70", I HAVE ALWAYS HEARS IT REFERRED TO AS "THE RULE OF 72". IS THIS AN ERROR OR A TYPO?

Here is a handy guide to life's financial problems. It is more than just an inventory as it provides the steps necessary for working with the numbers that underlie the solutions. You aren't a math wiz? No problem. Every example, and there are so very many of them, comes complete with simple words and an easy walkthrough to the solution. They build on each other, much as our real world financial problems are extensions of each other. Question: What is the world's most powerful financial force? Answer: Compound interest, of course. It is easily applied and can be made to work for anyone. The author suggests using a pocket calculator, and for most of the examples it will suffice. The more adventurous reader will want a spreadsheet, as the more involved (and realistic) examples/problems have many parts. A descriptive phrase can then accompany each number, and the rather straightforward formulas can be programmed at the start. All in all this is an excellent primer for the realities of money. The author's humorous touch adds to the book's enjoyment and utility.

Mr. Hershey's lighthearted tome takes a humorous yet enlightening approach to providing clarification on a subject that frightens many - crunching the numbers. If math was one of the subjects you avoided like the plague in high school, you might think this book isn't for you, and yet, it's the perfect guide for those that might find math a little unsettling. Loaded with clear examples of everyday financial situations, it's easy to track down the answer to questions many people face on a day to day basis. I especially liked the emphasis on the effect of compounding interest and the details on calculating investments in chapter 6 and 7. One word of caution though, if you're a big time gambler, just waiting for your horse to come in, skip chapter 3. In a nutshell, if you want clear advice on understanding investments, percentages, the odds of winning or how you can strategize on long term goals, this book is the place to find it. Even for the weak of heart when it comes to numbers.

This book, in the broadest sense, is an application of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics to the field of magnetism. Under certain well described circumstances, an immensely large number of electrons moving in the solid state of matter will collectively produce permanent magnetism. Permanent magnets are of fundamental interest, and magnetic materials are also of great practical importance as they provide a large field of technological applications. The physical details describing the many electron problem of magnetism are presented in this book on the basis of the local density functional approximation. The emphasis is on realistic magnets, for which the equations describing the many electron problem can only be solved by using computers. The great, recent and continuing improvements of computers are, to a large extent, responsible for the progress in the field. Along with a detailed introduction to the density functional theory, this book presents representative computational methods and provides the reader with a complete computer programme for the determination of the electronic structure of a magnet on a PC. A large part of the book is devoted to a detailed treatment of the connections between electronic properties and magnetism, and how they differ in the various known magnetic systems. Current trends are exposed and explained for a large class of alloys and compounds. The modern field of artificially layered systems - known as multilayers - and their industrial applications are dealt with in detail. Finally, an attempt is made to relate the rich thermodynamic properties of magnets to the ab initio results originating from the electronic structure.

An exaggerated depiction of a young, white, privileged, liberally educated but unpolitically correct male, living in Southern Califonia, dating a equally exaggeratedly drawn, politically correct, granola girl. Oh, the hijinks they will have!!! Please.

Reading this book was like visiting the sterotypical bachelor pad, complete with scenes featuring the amusements of belching, bragging about great sex, gleeful recapitulations about dirty clothes, dishes, etc. Unless you're into that type of humor, don't bother with this book. It was so dumb. There was also some "serious" story line, but I couldn't follow it because I was so bored and annoyed with the author's relentless quips.

The only thing I thought was remotely interesting was that the main character clearly had unresolved sexual feelings for his sister. If the author had addressed that issue, perhaps the book would have been interesting. Perhaps.

Even Better Than That.......2001-07-29

Hey, woah, fantastic doesn't even start to describe this great book. Every sentence is a mini-masterpiece -- really! Check out this book and you'll see that's no exaggeration. It's great writing, and it also made me grateful for a book with a plot! Most of the fiction I've read lately is this weak stuff where snippets and scenes and "vignettes", whatever they are, are supposed to be substitutes for an actual story. Thank you to Asher Brauner for a great story that is a lot of fun, and written in a terrific style.

Brilliantly Balanced Writing.......2001-06-04

I thought this was a terrific book. It was a welcome surprise, considering the many novels I've encountered recently that seem to be written in English but never avail themselves of the richness of the language. Love Songs of the Tone-Deaf is rich with metaphors, plays on words, clever asides and witticisms. This does not mean it is just an experimental head-game, or a nonsense goof. It is a serious novel that doesn't take itself too seriously, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate that.

The book chiefly follows three characters: Ronnie, the protagonist, his girlfriend Karen, and his sister Eva. Each of these is well-drawn, mocked when appropriate, praised when they earn it, and growing and changing throughout.

A proposal to start construction on an environmentally sensitive spot motivates Karen and thereby Ronnie into involvement in events greater than themselves. While the author gets it just right in mocking the excessive seriousness of the political crowd, this book lands squarely on the side of those who speak their minds against wrong.

A terrific side plot reveals Eva as a troubled young woman whom no one seems to understand, least of all herself. This subplot was for me actually the most engaging story, a love story of sister and brother, which one doesn't see that often.

Also mixed into the stew of this book is a meditation on the rights of Americans to the land we inhabit, given the little holocausts that were perpetrated to uproot the original inhabitants.

All in all, a story concerning important contemporary topics, delivered in a non-stop wisecracking, laugh-out-loud manner that means (one hopes) that this author has much more to come.

guarantee it right now -- you'll crack up at this very funny book. i don't know about you but if a novel describes all the stupidity i see around me and in myself then i'm pretty impressed. especially if added on is some excellent mystery-type tension. it reminds me of a cross between catcher in the rye and the movie fight club. the main character ronnie is typical guy except he isn't, because if you watch closely he changes right before your very eyes. great book!

this book ended up surprising me.......2001-05-12

First of all, the photo on the cover of this book really doesn't do the story justice. The people the book is mainly about, Ron Shorenstein, a very cynical & funny guy, & his hippie girlfriend, Karen, have to be older & better looking than the people in this hideous photo!!

Apart from the photo: this is a funny, sometimes very funny, & witty book about the world of campus politics & political correctness. Ron is very much critical of his girlfriend's altruistic "hippiness" & of her general lifestyle, her friends, the causes she works for etc. But on the other hand he's "in lust" with her...& slowly he falls in love with her (there's a difference!). In the end, Ron finds himself involved in Karen's political crowd, who are protesting the beginning of construction on an environmentally sensitive spot.

The book is kind of a love story, & kind of a story about neo-hippies, & kind of a story about a generation-x (or y or whatever) living in California...But all these issues, in my opinion, weren't developed that well. What really struck me was Asher Brauner's humour, through the voice of Ron Shorenstein. The lack of character development, the lack of good dialogue, the lack of anything resembling pace & structure...all these faults were counterbalanced by lots of laughing-out-loud bits which show that Asher Brauner does have talent. I'm looking forward to his next book, if nothing else, because I had fun during the 2 nights I was reading this one.

The bitter fighting in the Pacific Theater required new forms of warfare, and the gathering of detailed intelligence information on the remote and varied islands and their determined defenders. As a result, new scout, raider and reconnaissance units were formed‹the pioneers of today's special forces. Some units were small, while others comprised thousands of men. All contributed significantly to the war effort. This book examines a wide range of PTO special-warfare units, including the Alaskan and Alamo scouts, 5217th/1st Recon Battalion, Marine Amphibious Recon and Raider units, Amphibious Scouts, and 6th Ranger Battalion.

Emerging doctrine means 'make up stuff as you go along'.......2005-10-04

This 96-page book answered most of my questions about Pacific Theater special forces. When the United States entered World War Two, the nation's movers and shakers wanted commando units on the British model and the military establishment considered such units a waste of resources. Gordon L. Rottman covers this war between the two factions, the victory over the military during the war, and the rush to extinguish these units at the end of the war. Special forces units in the PTO had uneven success--part of the problem was the same as using the untried air weapons or the submarine.

Yet special forces units did achieve success all out of proportion to the resources expended on them. The war in the Pacific changed radically from the dark days following Pearl Harbor to the day that the surrender was signed on the Missouri. Special forces changed too.

The charge that special operations units "cream off" quality people is brought up and proven--but the alternative of simply expending this "cream" along with the rest of the cannon fodder isn't addressed. Special forces units could and did fill specific needs--Rottman pointed out that the long range reconnisance units were sorely missed during the Korean war and later rebuilt. Today's special forces (Ranger, Green Beret, SEAL, Marine Recon) had their World War Two counterparts. Rottman mentions that Marine Raider battalions have not been re-invented, though MEU (SOC) do have a platoon-sized special mission element.

I will get a lot of use out of the detailed organizational charts and the thorough histories of each type of unit. Navy frogmen were not covered in detail--I can live with that because little-known formantions are so well described. Most Osprey books have several color plates in the center displaying uniforms and equipment. This book has organizational charts and maps--a useful trade-off. "US Special Warfare Units in the Pacific Theater" told me what communications equipment was used in each unit. Individual and crew-served weapons were listed. Means of transport into and out of the operational zone, and what means were used in the Area of Operations, are covered because they limited unit size and firepower.

This book sheds light on little-known special warfare units used in the Pacific War.

Besides marking elite status, royal hunts functioned as inspection tours and imperial progresses, a means of asserting kingly authority over the countryside. The hunt was, in fact, the "court out-of-doors," an open-air theater for displays of majesty, the entertainment of guests, and the bestowal of favor on subjects.

In the conduct of interstate relations, great hunts were used to train armies, show the flag, and send diplomatic signals. Wars sometimes began as hunts and ended as celebratory chases. Often understood as a kind of covert military training, the royal hunt was subject to the same strict discipline as that applied in war and was also a source of innovation in military organization and tactics.

Just as human subjects were to recognize royal power, so was the natural kingdom brought within the power structure by means of the royal hunt. Hunting parks were centers of botanical exchange, military depots, early conservation reserves, and important links in local ecologies. The mastery of the king over nature served an important purpose in official renderings: as a manifestation of his possession of heavenly good fortune he could tame the natural world and keep his kingdom safe from marauding threats, human or animal. The exchanges of hunting partners--cheetahs, elephants, and even birds--became diplomatic tools as well as serving to create an elite hunting culture that transcended political allegiances and ecological frontiers.

This sweeping comparative work ranges from ancient Egypt to India under the Raj. With a magisterial command of contemporary sources, literature, material culture, and archaeology, Thomas T. Allsen chronicles the vast range of traditions surrounding this fabled royal occupation.

Chapters distill data from an exhaustive amount of research, revealing who hunted where during what eras, and on what scale, and scrutinizing every detail of hunts from animals used to game management and conservation techniques employed to how hunting was used as a measure of men and much more. An in-depth, scholarly historical study, The Royal Hunt In Eurasian History is very highly recommended, particularly for college libraries, but also as a valuable contribution to political history reference collections as well.
