This Is My Financial Bible.......2006-11-08
This book is jammed packed with lots of information. I'm on my third read of it. It's hard to understand for a novice like myself, but with each subsequent read, I pick up more information. Plus, there's a lenghty bibliography where you can find references to more in-depth research.
For anyone who is a student of finance and wants practical, research proven information, this is the book for you!
Okay for a quick read but too brief to be impressive or useful.......2005-09-07
Perhaps it's the author's intent to make the book as concise but informative as possible that it became a highly concentrated dose of investment psychology and empirical stuff not easily digestable for rookies or even veterans without a strong academic background on finance. For example, he had covered in the 28 page first chapter, psychology theories (with source reference, and simple background/statistics info/support) including over-confidence, over-optimissim, cognitive dissonance, confirmation bias, conservatism bias, anchoring, representativeness heuristic, availability bias, ambiguity aversion, frame dependence/mental accounting, utility theory (dynamic) prospect theory etc. Do you get what I mean?
IMHO, this book can serve as a recap for advanced traders who understand well basic financial concepts including Efficient Market Hypothesis and it's offsprings like CAPM, and can read statistics and essays with ease. For novices, "Beyond Greed and Fear: Understanding Behavioral Finance and the Psychology of Investing" by Hersh Shefrin and "The psychology of Finance by Lars Tvede" should be better choices.
p.s. The conclusions in the end of each chapter are well written, I must add. However, I cant say there are significant correlation between individual chapters.
Summary of Behavioral Finance Studies.......2005-08-09
This book summarizes the findings of numerous behavioral finance pundits. The author starts with a brief review of pertinent psychology and then addresses topics pertaining to asset management, security analysis and corporate finance. The chapters are broken into small capsules to explain study results on specific topics. I found the subject material interesting but would have liked more detail on how to apply the study findings.

Book Description
The debate over gun control is a complex and compelling one that has created a deep divide between gun rights and gun control supporters. Student researchers can use this reference source to explore the issue through the lives of fifty people who have become actively involved in either supporting gun control and stricter laws, or in supporting the rights of people to own and carry guns. This unique approach to the debate provides profiles of these individuals, highlighting the different reasons for each person's deep involvement in the debate and the different elements involved in the debate as a whole. Victims of gun violence, police officers, physicians, and Second Amendment scholars are among those who put a human face on this complicated debate. Readers can expect to experience a range of emotions and a questioning of their own views as they explore the complex issues of individual rights, the role of government and law enforcement, public health questions, and social issues such as gang violence and the need for safe communities from a variety of perspectives. A thorough introduction outlining the debate, references to additional sources, and complete lists of federal and state gun laws are additional tools this volume provides to help students understand the complexity of this divisive social issue.

Putting human faces on the great gun control debate.......2000-12-28
This biographical reference book on "the key figures in the gun control debate today" delivers arguments and counterarguments on the meaning of the Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, Americans' right to keep and bear arms. This book puts human faces on the argumentation. The figures featured in the reference book came from different backgrounds and disciplines, law, medicine, academics, law enforcement and plain mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, etc. who have become, because of their own experience, activists in the great debate. Ms. Bijlefeld has dealt adeptly and in a neutral manner with this debate, a debate on which the contestants often argue hotly and emotionally. She should be applauded for her efforts, for this book belongs in the hands of all of those involved in the debate, as well as politicians, teachers, journalists, and in all of the public libraries, as an invaluable source of reference. Some of the personalities featured in this book on the pro-gun side, Neal Knox, Gary Kleck, David Kopel, Don B. Kates, Sheriff Jay Printz, Suzanna Gratia Hupp, etc, contrast greatly, as can be imagined with those on the gun control camp headed by James and Sarah Brady, Carolyn McCarthy, Garen Wintemute, Phillip J. Cook, etc.
The volume contains fifty stories, biographical sketches of these figures. The tome is well and concisely written, and for those of you not previously introduced to this debate, I suspect, the author is correct that the reader will experience a range of emotions and many "will change their minds several times over" before coming to an informed conclusion. The well researched indices contain a summary of federal and state firearm laws (e.g., what bans are in effect in certain states, which states require registration, etc.), and various other compilations and sources of reference.
As one of the participants in the debate, I can categorically state she was fair, as fair as one can be, in her difficult task of writing this sort of book. One point that should be made is that in the months since the publication of this book, public opinion has decisively swung toward less gun control and more crime control. This was reflected in the polls taken during the presidential campaign and, the relatively mild tone of Vice President Al Gore, who wanted more gun control laws, versus Texas Governor George W. Bush, who wanted to enforce existing laws and not implementation of further restrictions on the right to keep and bear arms by ordinary Americans. Sensing this, Al Gore wisely and uncharacteristically remained quiet on this issue in the final days of the Presidential Election, but the damage was done. Given the economic prosperity, peace, and stability, he should have won the election. The fear of many Americans of losing their gun rights may have contributed to his defeat. Ms. Bijlefeld's magnum opus should be a good starting point for those readers not yet initiated in the gun debate as well as those of us who have been baptized in the fire of this controversy and desire to know more about our intellectual adversaries.

Book Description
The pollution of the earth’s freshwater habitats is a topic of major concern. This timely synthesis considers the effects of pollutants on aquatic animals via a series of research and review articles which present experimental evidence of sublethal and lethal effects of a range of toxicants at the physiological, cellular and subcellular levels. Topics covered include routes of uptake of toxicants; the effects of acute and chronic exposure to toxic metal ions, particularly zinc, copper and aluminium, with emphasis on the mechanisms of toxicity and chronic exposure to sublethal levels; the impact on fish biology of two chemicals of current concern, nitrites and oestrogenic substances; and studies of the mechanisms of toxicity at the cellular and subcellular level, including damage of DNA, using cultured fish cells.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent work.......2007-01-31
It takes a couple of chapters to get into the details and there seems to be a language unfamiliarity issue but overcoming this Simhony provides a very clear and understandable explaination of why physical realities occur thru an electron positron lattice model of space. The model seems to explain all the physical interactions and phenomenon that I was exposed to during several years of undergraduate level physics and quite frankly explains properties taken as intrinsicis such as "why does mass exhibit properties of inertia?". Simhony also explains the mass energy relation by dispelling the notion that energy creates mass or the spontaneous generation of particles when radiation is applied to the "vacuum of space" in that the mass was always within that space in the lattice and was meerely bumped out of the lattice.
I would love to see experiments directly conducted to prove or disprove Simhony's theory.

Book Description
Here are more than 100 of the best Jewish jokes you'll ever hear, interspersed with perceptive and persuasive insight into what they can tell us about how Jews see themselves, their families, and their friends, and what they think about money, sex, and success. Rabbi Joseph Telushkin is as celebrated for his wit as for his scholarship, and in this immensely entertaining book, he displays both in equal measure. Stimulating, something stinging, and always very, very funny, Jewish Humor offers a classic portrait of the Jewish collective unconscious.
Customer Reviews:
Easy history.......2007-08-15
Good light history of Jewish humor. Lots of classical jokes and a plausible narrative on the the roots of this genre. My only disagreement was with the anti-Arab bias that crept through.
A Big Telushkin Fan.......2007-07-30
I ordered "Jewish Humor" for three reasons:
1.) The previous Telushkin books I read, "Words that Hurt; Words that Heal," and "Jewish Literacy."
2.) The genius I'd discovered years ago in the old LP classic "Woody Allen, The Night Club Years." If anyone has ever said to you, "I shot a moose once. I was hunting upstate New York,..," then you know what I'm talkng about.
3.) My recent subscription to XM radio, where the non swearing comedy channels are loaded with fabulous, classic comedy entirely dominated (I realized one day), by Jewish commedians (Youngman, Allen, Fields, Rivers, Mason, Brooks, Seinfeld, Dangerfield, etc., etc.)
Where others see scholarship, I see affection, grace, humility, and chutzpah. To me, Telushkin is just a big sweetheart. He has accumulated a huge body of work that essentially seeks to share, communicate, explain, heal, find common ground, and help us all understand what it means to be Jewish.
The introduction, in the context of explaining the many subtle nuances of Jewish humor, provides an excellent understanding for Jewish reality. After all, most good humor is based, at least in part, on the truth.
If you're looking for an encyclopedia of Jewish humor, this is a good but perhaps not your best option. If your looking to understand Jewish humor and the Jewish tradition and spirit, this is as good as it gets.
"...the next morning, upon awakening in the woods in a moose suit, Mr. Berkowitz is shot, stuffed and mounted in the New York Athletic Club. But the joke is on them, because its restricted."
If Jacob Cohen(Rodney Dangerfield)Were a Rabbi..........2006-12-29
I saw Rodney Dangerfield 'allavahshulim'(rest in peace)answer a heckler at Detroit's Ford Auditorium, with:"I remember when I had my first beer."I still use it-but I don't consider it specifically,Jewish. And although Rabbi Telushkin goes into great detail(beginning in the introduction)into why this isn't about ethnic humor in general,my favorite example is a footnote in chapter one(p.29)while Telushkin was being heckled...whoops.."challenged my assertion that early Judaism promoted the parent-child relationship:...('heckler')"Isn't it true that God's first commandment to Abraham was to leave his father's home?..."It is true,"I answered(Telushkin)."But he was seventy-five at the time(Genesis 12.4);he was entitled."
Lb. for lb.,Telushkin is the hippest rabbi I can think of(I'm a non-Orthodox Jew who attends services at a Conservative synagogue);I'd rate the late Abraham Joshua Heschel, second.Telushkin has written pretty terrifically on the widest range of subjects to rate him otherwise.
Just plain enjoyable - You don't have to be Jewish..........2005-01-24
This book is a real pleasure to read. Rabbi Telushkin not only tells some wonderful jokes he analyzes them in an interesting way. In his preface he notes that Jews do not joke about everything but have a certain set of subjects from verbal aggresiveness, to professional ambition which they persistently joke about. His message in the book is that the Jews joking about themselves tell a lot about their values, and that their jokes are really a mirror to the soul. So it is not surprising that one of the main subjects if the close relation of parents and children, and the tremendous worry pressure love concern parents show for their children. Telushkin does not develop an overall theory of Jewish humor though he of course notes that laughing at oneself is often a way of protecting oneself from the insults of others. An it is too a way of bringing about a kind of group or communal solidarity. Those that can laugh with me are really my friends. The fact that Jews so specialize in laughing at themselves Telushkin points out also contributes to their having had a predominant role in ' comedy in America. He cites the long list of Jewish comedians from the old line Burns, Groucho and other Marxes , Jack Benny , through the Milton Berle, Henny Youngman Phil Silvers down to the Seinfeld Billy Chrystal generation. Anyone who leaves out Alan King Jerry Lewis Buddy Hackett should of course be castigated for this. In any case the main point about this book is ' Try it you'll like it' Once in the Subway there used to be an add which went ' You don't have to be Jewish to like Levi's ryebread' I think the same might be said about this book. You don't have to be Jewish ( though it probably helps) to get many a good laugh out of this excellent work.
Good analysis on tasteful + questionable jokes about jews.......2004-09-19
This is the type of book that puts a smile on your face while you think about why these kind of jokes are funny. The writer makes historical/cultural comments on the jokes involved and uses such catchy chapter titles such as: "And I used to be a hunchback: assimilation and its delusions", "How did you create that hurricane: jokes on jewish business" or "God as an underacheiver". Some are old and familar but there is plenty of new material. Of course, my favorites poke fun at the Rabbis. Since the writer is one, he knows how to make me laugh. ;-)
Highly recommended.
Book Description
Hisarlik is a small place, a sandy stone strewn hillock cut up into gullies and hummocks. Yet its historical significance is immense, for this is the site of Troy - the legendary city whose story sprawls across cultures, time and geography. The tale of the siege of Troy is the greatest secular story ever told, and has captured the imagination of the Western World for some 3,000 years. Although there are many difficulties in using Greek myths, oral traditions and the Homeric epics to reconstruct the Trojan War, this title uses the latest archaeological evidence to reconstruct in detail the fortifications of Troy as well as making more general observations about the possible historical events behind the epics of Homer.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent presentation of the city then and now.......2007-10-17
I used this book to prepare me and then guide me on a walking tour of the ancient fortress city of Troy this spring and the book is terrific. It presents a concise and coherent discussion of the debate over which layer of the ruins was the subject of Homer's Iliad, presenting the evidence clearly and simply. The book has excellent photographs but by far the best feature is the abundant original art that shows how the city and the local geography looked during the Trojan War. I have read a dozen books on Troy and the Trojan War, and this one is the best on the city itself.
Troy took life.......2006-11-10
This is a concise and clear explanation about the archaeological site of Troy. I recommend it for the lover of archaeology who wants to bring life to the past civilizations.
The drawings were very nice and explanatory too.
Osprey's collection about history is worth having a look to.
Some good solid illustrations.......2005-06-16
As usual these series either have great text or great illustrations. This time it was the illustrations that caused me to buy this book. That and I just am nuts about Troy. (One of the high points of my life was to go and actually see that small windy hill)
superb starter.......2004-08-26
This slender volume of just 64 pages packs considerable wallop. The text is simple and to the point, providing a nice intro or overview. The color illustrations are exacting and do a terrific job of conveying scope and relative setting. The black and white photos are on the mark, too. They illustrate key points/architectural elements and are placed just where you want them. This is the only book of the series I have seen, but it won't be the last.
A window into the history behind a great legend.......2004-08-20
As mentioned by another reviewer, Osprey Publishing is usually associated with military-oriented books, lavishly illustrated with maps, photographs, and precise drawings of uniforms and weapons. "Troy c. 1700-1250 BC" is a volume that should have a broader appeal than to military enthusiasts alone. Although certainly the fortification aspects of the Trojan story are given a certain focus in this publication, the full story of the historical Troy which lies behind the legends and Homeric poetry is also presented in Nic Fields' book. And that has been an evolving story. For most of a century we thought we knew the extent of Troy at the time of the famed Trojan Wars when, at least according to myth, a great army of Greeks besieged and sacked the city. We knew it as a tall-walled citadel atop a hill near the Hellespont. But in the last decade or so, a German archaeological team has uncovered a previously unknown "lower city" stretching out into the Trojan plain from this citadel, proving the ancient city to be far larger than understood before. And this new knowledge is excellently presented in a series of delicate but vibrant drawings in the volume by Donato and Sarah Sulemsohn Spedaliere. Nowhere else have I seen this expanded city of Troy so well visually presented. Students of ancient history and archaeology will be well pleased by this Osprey volume.
Book Description
The grape pre-dates humans, so it’s hard to know who discovered wine. However, archeological and other discoveries have made it easier to find this out since wine was used to meet spiritual needs. At least, this is the story that is usually told. But when civilization began about 8,000 years ago it didn't take long for wine to move from an instrument of spirituality to a dominant economic power; all it took was the development of trade. Thereafter, the life and death of certain cultures often depended upon the fortunes of wine trading. Wine may have even sparked the earliest wars.
Presenting its history from a commercial perspective, Wine reveals how the historically powerful wine trade has been a catalyst in many important developments throughout the ages such as sea mercantilism, early glass blowing, cooperage and cork production, trade fairs and festivals, advertising and promotion, the survival of civilization during the so-called Dark Ages, war financing, placating or pacifying troops, tranquilizing marauders, politics, literature and more.
Customer Reviews:
Boring read.......2007-10-10
This was an extremely boring read, and read like a junior high text book. Way too much information, very few anecdotes. I can't remember anything interesting to take away from the book, and am sad I plowed threw the whole thing (I was on vacation, and that was the only book I brought.) I am a wine specialist and educator, and found no inspiration in this. Find another wine history book.
An enjoyable history of wine, civilization and commerce........2007-03-31
This is an enjoyable and highly informative book. I had no idea of the way that wine was so intricately tied up in the progress of civilization. The book covers a vast swath of history and almost the entire planet while describing the evolution of wine and the wine trade.
The author seems to hold few biases and gives an even-handed treatment to the various aspects of this story. The only bias that I detected was towards wine merchants. This is not surprising since he makes his history as a merchant very clear. But I was disappointed that the final sentence, and particularly the final phrase, of this book were so focused on the importance of wine merchants. I read this book as a result of an interest in wine and history. Wine merchants are a necessary part of the story, but from my point of view they're just one cog in the wheel.
As another reviewer mentioned, the author's writing style leaves a little to be desired. This is not a major fault. It's just that I found his sentence structures and choice of words to be a bit awkward at times.
Although I've raised a couple of critical points, I still enthusiastically recommend this book. It's a fairly quick read, is filled with easy-to-digest information, and pulls together many facets of the story of wine. If you like wine and history, this is the book for you.
Greg's Review.......2007-01-04
I found the book extremely interesting in so many ways, eg. Geography, History, the evolution of wine storage over the centuries, the comparison of regulations from Nation to Nation.
We all should have heard of Babylon (even from Boney M a few years ago) but how many of us would have known that it was roughly where Baghdad stands today. Who would have known that the earliest remnants of wine grapes found (so far) were in the Republic of Georgia?
A wonderful learning book.
Review of the book Wine:the 8000 year old story of the wine trade.......2006-11-03
I was amazed by the influence that wine had on the development of the world, how it influenced population growth, exploration and everything else. I found it very informative and would recommend it to anyone interested in wine and its history.
The 8,000 Year-Old Story of the Wine Trade.......2006-11-03
This is a great book that is an in depth view of how wine evolved to be traded among empires and countries. I was startled to learn as I read this book that there was so much political haggling of wine in the early ages. This shows that wine has always been an important product of enjoyment for the ages. The book is a little too in depth at times, but you wouldn't want it the other way, so it is good. I enjoyed this book as a bathroom book and had enjoyable mornings reading this.

Book Description
"Fear gripped my soul when I discovered a marble-sized lump hidden in my left breast during a self-examination in July of 1991...." So begins this, one of the most powerful and inspiring personal accounts of breast cancer ever written. Breast cancer now claims the lives of 46,000 American women each year, and strikes terror in the minds of many more. The lesson of Barbara Stone's experience is that cancer need not be dreaded as a death sentence, but can better be seen as a challenge to become more alive - physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Barbara Stone fought cancer with the best tools that Western medicine has been able to discover: surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. She combined these treatments with the best techniques drawn from Eastern and Alternative medicine: meditation, yoga, herbs, acupuncture, cranial osteopathy manipulation, diet changes, sauna baths, and Kirlian photography.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for all women!.......2001-11-02
A fascinating and deeply intimate account of one woman's survival of cancer and the journey she travelled to get there. Open and honest about the feelings and thoughts experienced when one is facing death, be it death of the physical self and/or death of the old life to the birth of a new life. Barbara wonderfully incorporates traditional medical therapies with alternative therapies. Her intelligence and wisdom are apparent as soon as you begin reading. A book you just cannot put down!
A Remarkable Guide To Wellness.......2001-01-15
Discovering cancer, and her own mortality, Barbara Stone draws on wisdom, faith, and resolve to lead herself and us on a triumphant journey over fear and disease. Her story will deeply touch you. Truly, it is a "profile in courage." Whether well or ill, everyone should read this book.

My mother happens to be friends with Ms. Stone, the author of Cancer as Initiation. It was after I met her that I became compelled to read her book. My mother also battled breast cancer, and this book gave me a sense of what she might be experiencing. The author uses a unique blend of journal, expository, and personal writings, creating a book that is difficult to put down. I enjoyed learning about her use of both Eastern and Western medicine. Cancer as Initiation offers the family members of breast cancer victims and survivors hope and peace. Cancer is a blessing and a curse, but frightening to all. After reading Barbara's book, and doing some soul-searching of my own, I know that if I am ever diagnosed with breast cancer myself, the power to beat it lies within me, and my own unique combinations of Western and Eastern medicine.
Teenage daughter of a breast cancer survivor finds insight.......1998-08-22
Barbara Stone not only wrote an enlightening, creative book, she is an amazing person. My mother and Ms. Stone have been good friends since high school, and I met her earlier this year. I can assure you she practices all that she preaches.
Being from a relatively small, conservative area, I was not aware of much of the Eastern medicine Stone mentions in her book. I was eager to learn all I could, and Cancer as Initiation provided much insight for me into areas I had not previously explored. I was unaware how much basic mediatation would eventually help me.
As I examined the book closely, I found ideas not only about surviving cancer, but about keeping a healthy outlook on life as well. Stone's creativity and completely open mind certainly were well used in this book I recommend to anyone touched by cancer in even the smallest way. By moving away from what is commonly called the "death sentence" theory, Ms. Stone has painted a new picture of the cancer survivor. And painted it well.
Timeless interplay of Mind/Body Wholeness.......1998-06-20
The Inner life, the Outer life, and the Transcendant steering of the interplay of emotions makes this a landmark contribution for all interested persons whether they be the cancer patient or family or friend. The writer intensively lives her feeliings and rides this roller coaster displaying the sheer beauty of her thought processes through dreams, journal work, and personal interactions. The use of Kirlian photography to portray her progress is an important feature of the work. She demonstrates the sidestepping of this number one opportunity for passive suicide! It is a great personal vote for engaging life.

Book Description
This was the first of a number of seminars dealing with one of the most complex of the new challenges in the 21st century, which call for the participation of a broad range of experts. Eminent economists, decision-makers, defence specialists, political analysts and sociologists presented their views and participated in the debates. In the wake of the dramatic event of 11 September 2001, the Afghanistan war and the resurgence of terrorist acts on all the continents, a host of issues were reconsidered and the role of science and technology was reassessed. The 27th Session was primarily oriented toward the definition of the new types of confrontation, and the identification of various factors and issues that gave rise to them and global trends.
