Case study is worth reading..........2007-04-21

First part of this book is about reading financial statements. If you already know the statements, you don't need to read the first part. However, even if you can read the statements, the second part, case study, will be helpful to your real analysis.

I found the chapters are not very in detail. I was using it as the textbook and the lecture notes are way better. I read the book at the begginning but stopped in the middle as it doesn't really help. However, the end of chapter case studies are pretty good.

Useful if cumbersome.......2002-12-16

This review applies to the edition WITH CASES. This isn't recommended for anyone who is just starting out with choosing investments. Beginners might be better off with a more general overview of financial statement analysis (FSA) like Higgins' "Analysis of Financial Statements" or Fraser and Omriston's "Understanding Financial Statements".

This was one of two textbooks used in a financial statement analysis course I took for my MBA. Most chapters are down-to-earth and as a whole the book is well-written.

The other text we used was Penman's "Financial Statement Analysis and Security Valuation" which was also a great resource as far as gaining a basic understanding of the mechanics of financial statements and how to build a valuation model.

I contrast the two books because while Penman provides a run-down of several different models analysts can use (and does a good job of arguing for the Residual Income Model of valuation model as being the best), Palepu delves into the implications of companies' choices of accounting methods and provides more insight into what different kinds of businesses should look like in terms of their financial statements.

The cases at the end of each chapter add a lot of value to the text because they get students to focus on the specific issues detailed in each chapter. By picking apart different companies' financial statements we learned to use financial statements to assess the success or failure of companies' efforts to carry out their business strategies.

Required Text.......2002-09-17

This is a required text at my school, but after having read the first 5 chapters there is almost nothing of value that I have read. I have spoken to several people that have used this text for the class in prior semesters and they told me that they had stopped reading it after the first several chapters also.

Excellent Capstone Book.......2000-10-12

This book is an excellent description of all the elements that would go into reviewing a potential investment opportunity. It is not a detailed book in one category, such as financial accounting, but it ties business strategy analysis, financial analysis, forecasting analysis, and valuation analysis together. Most other books focus on one area and don't tie all of these together well. This one takes you down the path to evaluating the opportunity to its fullest. It is an excellent capstone book after you have sifted through the details of strategy, finance, and accounting.

International Business education and research became institutionalized in leading US business schools in the 1960s. One of the most influential business schools and one of the first to develop a full international business department was Indiana University. In the first two sections of this book, the leadership of Indiana University in the developments in the field of international business is assessed. In subsequent parts of the book, the influence of Indiana University on the major associated fields of research and teaching (finance, marketing, and management) is assessed, and recent research themes in these fields are explored.

The latter parts of the book serve to place the earlier historical discussion of IB in context and illustrate how mature and wide-ranging the field has become over the last fifty years.

A distinctive voice and a compelling protaganist.......2000-01-30

The loopy style wore thin toward the end, but Ted's mix of dark-minded cynicism and only-a-young-guy innocence was so realistic I had to find out what happened to him. The story seemed to get away from Ted, making for a slightly disappointing ending, but the first half of the book was very sharp. A good read simply for Ted's funny and consistent narration.

How refreshing to read a book that is completely out of the ordinary.The characters are painted in living color and sound so absolutely true. Not only is this a very funny book, but also a lesson in living together with other races. It should be read more than once. My only regret: the preachy ending is not needed - the author had made his point clearly over and over again. I hope it becomes a classic.

Original, witty and insightful account of life........1999-01-21

This is a fascinating novel. It is different, but impossible to put down. I am amazed that this novel is not more widely known. This is clearly a cult novel before anybody realised it. Read this book and you will be moved, entertained and you will laugh.

This history of the United States's meddling in Mexican affairs features a cast of characters who don't make either side look very good. President Woodrow Wilson regularly misapprehends the situation to his south, prompting two violations of Mexican sovereignty: a naval occupation of Veracruz and an aggressive search by the American military for the bandit Pancho Villa, who raided a town in New Mexico. The Mexican politicians were hardly exemplars of democratic enlightenment, but the American response to their shenanigans sparked an enormous amount of national indignation in Mexico that still hasn't entirely vanished. Brigadier General John J. Pershing, the man charged with hunting down Villa, comes across as an upright soldier and one of the book's few noble figures; he's the central character in Eisenhower's most entertaining section.

Pancho and Pershing.......2001-06-21

Tough as nails history that tells of Mexico during the years of revolution and civil war. Pancho Villa and John "Blackjack" Pershing's punitive expedition is the focal point of the book. The author explains that bungling interventions in Mexico by American politicians didn't alter the fact that Mexicans ultimately determined their own governement. The book is a good introduction to a subject that may be obscure to many American readers, especially 85 years later. Eisenhower does well fleshing out details in the text, in several appendices, and thorough notations. Only a fellow named "Eisenhower" can give one this powerful insider perspective of military and political history. Recommended for multiple reading and further study. ;-)

"Intervention: The United States and the Mexican Revolution".......2001-01-06

I found this book to be extremely well written. It is a topic that engenders many passions, and, opinions on this topic often are based on these passions. The author plainly puts the historical events in perspective in a way that all the events and the characters make sense. The author does not take sides even though he may glamorize Pershing somewhat. The organization of the book is superb and the descriptions of specific events and of specific characters such as Madero, Zapata, Carranza, Huerta, Funston, Obregon and others are excellent. I would recommend this book to anybody, Mexican, American or otherwise, interested in the events of this inevitable and tragic period in the history of Mexico. A very "readable" book. Juan Cardenas

Non-biased view points of both sides of the border.......1998-03-08

The author has done a good job in presenting the facts and history leading up to the American intervention into Mexican affairs during the early part of this (20th) century. This book details the American air of superiority as well as Pancho Villa's reason's for raiding Columbus, NM. This is a great book for anyone interested in that period of Mexican-American history

Excellent overview for the non specialist........1997-03-14

This book is an excellent sythesis of the latest research and writings of the specialists in the field of US Mexican relations. It is just enough for the non specialist to enjoy and frankly, for a specialist such as myself in this period, I found it well worth reading too. It reads well and can be read in a couple of days at most. While I have had even longer a copy of Alan Knight's massive synthesis I admit that I have yet to read that one all the way through. Just the footnotes could take a day. If you want a good sort out of the major players on both sides of the border this is for you. Ronald Atkins' Revolution once was the "one book if you're having only one", but that one is long out of print. This is an even better one. Carter Rila "el cutachero"

Save your Cheetos.......2001-05-04

In addition to very fascinating excursions to Mesopotamia, where the author sends a camera up in a kite to take photos of the scorched lines in the earth left over from what he suspects may by either Sodom or Gomorrah, and the profile of ancient Ninevah including a canal system inside the city walls, Pellegrino takes a moment to let us know that prior to the elimination of coconut oil as an ingredient, Twinkies would burn for 20 minutes, and were a great back up source of light for underground explorations. Now, he makes do with giant Cheetos, held with a tweezers, which will burn for maybe 10 minutes. I tried it, and it's true.

Captivating, informative, transporting........1997-02-04

With wit and humor Dr. Pellegrino and his companions today led me on the most stirring and provacative tour of my life. Places once disconnected in my mind's eye are now alive, and full of fascination for me: the straight, steady Nile River Valley and its sluggish culture; the now-you-see-them-now-you -don't peoples of the fertile plains of Mesopotamia; and the ancient ancestors, cousins over the centuries from Asia, Africa, and Europe, woven together in the Middle East. The Gulf War, its rising up and falling down, make sense to me now, historically if not humanly, as does the conflict between Israel and Palestine, and the cyclic nature of life. Thank you, Charles, for a most interesting and illuminating day.

CLEAR, OBJECTIVE, AND UNBIASED; a must for history lovers........1997-01-06

Dr. Pellegrino welded my eyes, and mind, to his fascinating archaeological journey thorough the Holy Land. I enjoyed reading a book where the author doesn't use religious bias. His knowledge of the Bible is extremely extensive, which combines with his archaeological expertise to produce a book that gives the reader a better understanding, in clearer terms, of the fascinating stories of the Bible. Read this book with an open mind, and read it again once you are done with it. For those who are non-practicing Christians (like me), this book is an excellent companion guide to the Holy Scriptures. Once your mind is saturated in its informative content, you'll want to recomend it to the rest of your friends and family, and just about anyone else you meet from that day on. --Andrés Goyanes--
