Book Description
Disputes over valuation issues fill the court's dockets and for good reason, fair market valuations are required frequently by the law. The authors believe that approximately 243 sections of the Code and several thousand references in the Regulations explicitly require fair market value determination. Consequently, taxpayers file an estimated 15 million tax returns each year reporting an event involving a valuation related issue. It is no mystery, therefore, why valuation cases are ubiquitous. Today, valuation is an important and highly sophisticated process. Valuators need legitimate guidance to perform their work. The objective of this book is to provide knowledge, and guidance to those who do the valuations as well as those who are affected by them.
This unprecedented text provides:
- Clear guidance and perspective on business valuation from two of the nation’s top authorities, Hon. David Laro and Dr Shannon Pratt.
- Insightful perspective and discussion on critical issues, procedures and law pertaining to business valuation.
- An overview of business valuation procedures
- Law and techniques of Fair Market Value Opinion from the Hon. David Laro and Dr. Shannon Pratt who express their unique and critical views.
- The business valuer with everything from the basics to the sophisticated. From definitions to valuing complex business interests, what you need to know about business valuation.
- Everything from empirical market evidence to credible expert business valuation testimony discussed and analyzed by the Hon. David Laro and Dr. Shannon Pratt.

Straightforward, bright, and accessible.......2006-11-10
I bought this book in conjunctioin with a business planning course taught by the author. I'm usually not a fan of most law books, but this book presents valuable content in a manner accessible to both law and business students.
book is targeted to lawyers doing valuation.......2006-10-26
This book is targeted towards Lawyers who are doing valuation for tax purposes (have a court case where valuation is disputed). This book is full of references court cases which is not what I expect from a Valuation book. The "and Taxes" should have given it away but I figured it had to do something how valuation changes due to taxes. I would not buy this book if you actually need to do valuation. No examples whatsoever.
Buy it if you are a lawyer working on a Valuation case. Otherwise this book not for you.

Book Description
Real world investors differ in their tastes and attitudes and they do not have, in general, perfect information about the future prospects of the economy. Most theoretical models, however, assume to the contrary that investors are homogeneous and perfectly informed about the market. In this book, an attempt is made to overcome these shortcomings. In three different case studies, the effect of heterogeneous time preferences, heterogeneous beliefs and imperfect information about the economy's growth on the term structure of interest rates are studied. The initial chapter gives an introduction to the theory of financial markets in continuous time under imperfect information and establishes the existence of an equilibrium with complete markets.

A remarkable look at farming in the last century.......2002-12-12
If you can find a copy of this magnificent book, do so. The text and woodcuts by Clare Leighton, an Englishwoman who loved the lore and history of farming in the British Isles, sweeps you away to another time and place...and yet reminds you of why the love and allure of farm life still runs through most of our veins. The large size book has lavish woodcuts of great imaginary power, and text that can sweep you away. Filled with old words and old farming techniques, that make you long for this age past. For anyone who loves art, imagination, and the human creative spirit.

Book Description
Radioecology in Northern Euroepean Seas summarizes an extensive body of literature on the oceanographic and biological conditions involved in the transfer and accumulation of radionuclides in marine sediment and biota of the Northern European seas. Much of the information has been derived through many decades of investigation carried out by the Murmansk Marine Biological Institute. This book presents the original works, augmented and complemented by work conducted by other institutes during the nuclear era. The synthesis of this extensive body of information forms the basis of a new methodological and theoretical framework describing radionuclide bioaccumulation by marine invertebrate and vertebrate animals, paying special attention to marine food webs leading to humans.

Book Description
This text provides a thorough treatment of the fundamental principles of fluid mechanics and convection heat transfer and shows how to apply the principles to a wide variety of fluid flow problems. The focus is on incompressible viscous flows with special applications to non-Newtonian fluid flows, turbulent flows, and free-forced convection flows. A special feature of the text is its coverage of generalized mass, momentum, and heat transfer equations, Cartesian tensor manipulations, scale analyses, mathematical modeling techniques, and practical solution methods. The final chapter is unique in its case-study approach, applying general modeling principles to analyze nonisothermal flow systems found in a wide range of engineering disciplines. The author provides numerous end-of-chapter problems, solutions, and mathematical aids to enhance the reader's understanding and problem-solving skills.

Book Description
Six-year-old Jack Klein’s first day of school is also a day of radical changes: Jack’s mother Lorraine learns that her husband, Ray, is having an affair, and that her secret love, Antoine Gaudin, the 65-year-old boarder in the basement, has committed suicide, leaving behind a suitcase full of money and a sack of gold teeth. Lorraine’s decision about what to do about the money, the gold teeth, and Ray’s infidelity will forever change her life and her family. This briskly paced, black-comic tale moves seamlessly between the distinct but overlapping worlds of a confused child, a mother immersed in 1960s youth culture, and a father who worships the fading Rat Pack and the indulgences it represents.
Customer Reviews:
Takes you right back.......2005-01-31
Reading "A Sack of Teeth" is like stumbling across some lost John Updike novel from the 1960s, the glory period of RABBIT RUN and COUPLES. The book has the same kind of wry, funny wisdom about very young people and their bewildered elders that Updike used to have, plus a Canadian twist which everyone will enjoy. It's set in the autumn of 1965, the heyday of YOU ASKED FOR IT and GILLIGAN's ISLAND, and though the characters are kind of low-rent Grant Buday brings them a difficult dignity. Some might balk at following the consciousness of a precocious six year old, but you'll enjoy the little boy's wry perceptions. "He spotted something else, something new, something unexpected, something he didn't understand." The repetitions of "something" help sketch out the boy as being a little obsessive. "In the long and boggy grass beneath a blue sky Ivor's dad--pants down--was kneeling behind Ivor's sister Nadia who was on all fours with her dress pushed up." Only a young child would see such a thing with such insouciance and outright curiosity. "Mr. Skog and Nadia made noises." This is a book which removes nostalgia from memory, dosing instead with the finest pure science.
Sack of Teeth.......2003-12-16
Grant Buday's "Sack of Teeth" is a current favourite of mine. Buday offers up many creative twists and turns in this slim story that takes place over the course of one day. I love 6-year-old Jack's voice best of all (the story is told from three perspectives). Someone should nominate "Sack of Teeth" for best opening sentence: "At six years old, Jack Klein knew many things: that plums and apples tasted best when stolen, that by putting hockey gloves on your feet you become King Kong, and that the air in the freezer smelled like snow."
Another current favourite: "Peace Like A River." Leif Enger knows how to spin a yarn too!
Book Description
The battle of Cannae is rightly regarded as one of the greatest battles of military history. Apart from it being the greatest defeat ever suffered by Roman arms, Hannibal's stratagem has become a model of the perfectly fought battle and is studied in detail at military academies around the world. Following his invasion of Italy during the Second Punic War Hannibal inflicted two bloody defeats on Rome at the River Trebbia and at the battle of Lake Trasimene, in the case of the latter destroying the consular army of Caius Flaminius. After this disaster the Romans determined to ensure both Consuls were present at any future battle. At Cannae the Romans confronted Hannibal with an army of 80,000 infantry and 6,000 cavalry under both consuls who because of a quirk of Roman politics commanded on alternate days. Hannibal faced them with 40,000 foot and 10,000 horse-drawn up on a clear plain where there could be no threat of hidden troops (such as at Trasimene) effectively using his whole army as bait. The battle which followed is a masterpiece of battlefield control. Hannibal allowed his centre to give ground, drawing in the more numerous Roman infantry while his cavalry drove off that of the enemy. Having defeated their counterparts the Carthaginian cavalry returned and charged into the rear of the struggling Roman Legions. By the end of the battle the Romans lost 47,500 infantry and 2,700 cavalry killed and a further 19,300 captured. Mark Healy recounts this battle in detail as well as explaining Hannibal's campaign before it, with particular attention to his invasion of Italy.
Customer Reviews:
Overall Good but flawed.......2005-08-12
Quite a good introduction for the 2nd punic war period. Nicely illustrated using plates from other man-at arms books. The maps are interesting and a nice addition. Healy's numbering of the Legions is a great feature and he seems to do a good job of keeping a track of the many bodies of troops raised for assorted campaigns. Another pleasant bonus are the pictures of the battle fields today, illustrating probable campsites and lines of advance. My only major complaint concerns his revisionist views on Varro. He spends too many pages in my view excusing his dismal performance on the day of the battle. He discounts both Livy and Polybius and suggests that other Consul was in command on the day. Any general worth his salt should have learned something from the previous defeats. Varro's deep deployment is clearly to blame for this day of Roman disaster. Healy makes out that no one could have beaten Hannibal on the day. A longer battle line would have saved the Romans and they had plenty of troops to do that. Hannibal tactics were excellent and have been a source of inspiration to many other generals over the centuries. That aside it is a good read and general introduction to the period 3/5 ***'s
EXCELLENT WRITING, GREAT MAPS.......2002-03-18
Cannae 216 Bc : Hannibal Smashes Rome's Army (Campaign Series, No 36) by Mark Healy is positive proof that good things do come in small packages. While the book is short (96 pages) it is jammed pack with useful and information and maps. If one is looking for a well written account of the Second Punic War up to the battle of Cannae there are few books which are better.
I purchased the book after reading a number of accounts of the battle of Cannae contained in more extensive studies of Hannibal. However, in each case I was disappointed with the discussion of Cannae. Healy's book was not a disappointment. Especially appealing were the maps which accompanied the prose. What little that was missing in the verbal description was more than made up for in the maps.
After finishing the book, I felt that I understood the tactics and strategy that were both planned for and carried out. This is an excellent book and I would highly recommend it.
One of the Great Battles of Ancient History!.......2000-03-25
Another great book in the Osprey Campaign series. Like all Campaign books it gives important background information on the cause of the war, the opposing leaders and the armies that fought the battle. In addition there is a detailed description of Hannibal's invasion of Italy, the preceding battles of Ticinus, Trebbia and Lake Trasimene, and the climatic clash at Cannae. It also gives an interesting account of the "Fabian" strategy of the Romans that would bring them eventual victory in the war. If you are interested in the battles of the ancient world or Roman history this is a must for your library.

The title is disingenuously precise. Around the turn of the last millennium, time bore a different complexion; indeed, it was expressed through a variety of calendars. The notion of a millennium would occupy a book in itself (and has: see Stephen Jay Gould's terrific Questioning the Millennium), so rather than box himself in, anthropologist John Man wisely attempts a general appraisal of the late-10th-and-early-11th-century world, and how it hung together.
And it did hang together. Vikings were in Vinland (Canada's Newfoundland today), Basques were roaming the oceans, Polynesians roamed the South Seas, and the Jews were the blood coursing through the new-born community's veins, linking empires with their indomitable trading. Recognizable events included the murder of Malcolm, later to be immortalized in That Scottish Play, the writing of The Tale of Genji, possibly the world's first novel, the Battle of Maldon, and the carving of the Easter Island statues. John Man takes on this developing world methodically, moving across the continents, taking each people in turn and in a couple of pages outlining their status in historical and cultural contexts, past and present. Of course, some are easier to trace than others, with the world dividing into those with a written culture and those without; however, large expanses that were previously a mystery, such as sub-Saharan Africa, are only now starting to turn up illuminative archaeological remains and artifacts. As ever, the past is in the future, and will be for many years to come. There is a lot here to digest. The sweep of this book is refreshingly broad and cosmopolitan--for a more Anglocentric perspective, read Robert Lacey and Danny Danziger's The Year 1000. John Man's brief history of a time is more globally connective, broadsheet rather than tabloid, and while there is inevitably a hint of the textbook about it, liberal use of illustrative maps and photographs breaks up the text at apposite points. In a cluttered field, and at a cluttered time, it delivers an instructive and timely historical bookmark. --David Vincent, Amazon.co.uk
Book Description
This dazzling book takes us on a voyage of discovery around the world at the turn of the last millennium, when for the first time the world was in essence a unity. Islam bridged Eurasia, western Europe, and North Africa. Vikings, with links to Scandinavia and Russia, had just arrived in North America. These and other peoples reached out to create links and put isolated cultures unwittingly in touch. John Man vividly captures these epochal events, and depicts the colorful peoples that defined the world's mix of stability and change, of isolation and contact. In an immensely learned portrayal, he traces enduring cultural strands that became part of the world as we know it today.
In text, maps, and pictures, most in color, and drawing on the expertise of two dozen consultants, John Man has created a concise compendium of all the major cultures of the lost millennial world of 1000. In some cultures--Europe, Islam, China, and Japan--written records contain a vast range of materials, often revealing sharply focused details of life and personality. Here lie startling contrasts with today's world, and even foreshadowing of the future that are equally astonishing in their familiarity. For nonliterate cultures--in the United States, Southeast Asia, Polynesia, Africa--this book draws on a wealth of archeological research, some of it made available to nonspecialists for the first time.
Customer Reviews:
Deja Vu .......2006-11-30
Really shows what a difference 1,000 years can make. The most remarkable fact this atlas brings out is the border of Eastern Germany and the Slavs is almost exactly as today's border with Poland. Can this be a coincidence or were the allied powers after WWII knowingly trying to repeat history by forcibly removing 13 million Germans from lands east of the Oder and Niesse rivers ?
An impressive, informative historical survey........2000-04-06
John Man's Atlas Of The Year 1000 provides a fine choice for the Year 2000 reader: a survey of the inventions which took place around the world at the turn of the last century. Chapters pair sidebars of information and color maps with illustrations and lively descriptions of explorations and events which affected and changed the world of the times.
book's great -- publisher isn't.......2000-02-10
This is a very enjoyable book - I bought it as background for a trip to Norway, and found the text and graphics fascinating and very well produced. I was, however, disappointed to find a missing sentence on the subject I was most interested in (the Vikings). When I spoke to the editorial department at Harvard University Press, they told me that if I wanted to find out how the section ended I would have to write to England, because they didn't know what was in the book they published! Fortunately, the customer service department rescued me from the trolls in "editorial," but I wasn't very impressed - what do they think they're selling - soap?
Brilliant performance.......2000-01-10
No book I've seen so perfectly portrays what a thousand years of human history means. It's an intriguing idea to scan, but then the sheer quality of the material John Man has found forces you to examine the work in detail after amazing detail---Chinese junks with 6 masts that could carry 500 people!

Dry but informative, visuals worth the price of admission.......1998-10-17
"The Atlas of Medieval Man" consists of text and a large number of photos, maps, and other visuals. While the text is well-rounded, covering each major area of civilization rather than just Europe, as is common, it is rather dryly written. Information is plentiful, but one can get bogged down; that's where the visuals come in. This book has a stunning array of artifact photos, architecture photos, manuscript reproductions, maps, etc. which outclass any other volume under $50. From the 11th century Hindu temple carvings to the stained glass of 14th century Europe, to the Aztec crystal skull of the 15th century, this book is a feast for the eyes as well as mind.

A book attacking child testimony.......2000-05-26
The bias of the authors rings from every page of this novelistic text. They diminish the potential impact of child abuse, suggesting on the basis of no evidence at all that most of the children are lying. Those who are telling the truth should be left with their abusers for the most part, since the authors believe that many children can be molested or raped without lasting harm. The authors themselves do the most poorly controlled and unscientific studies that I have ever seen. In an interview in a Dutch magazine, the authors have stated that it would be a "good idea" to pair children with pedophiles in a scientific study so that we could see if they are really harmed. Don't reward this kind of thinking by buying this book.
Excellent and Timely.......2000-03-20
Finally a book that is balanced, thoughtful and scholarly, and makes sense of the madness regarding some of the fantastic claims of child abuse and satanic ritual abuse. It offers understanding to the many victims who have been falsely accused of crimes they never committed, while it never loses sight of the problem of real child abuse in our society. This is a must-read for anyone involved in therapy or counselling.
