Special Forces Ops Then & Now.......2007-02-25

This is a military handbook meant for use in the field by trained Special Forces troopers, which means those who are already skilled in operations and intelligence, demolitions, communications, weapons, and advanced medical skills. It has a great deal more information than the SPECIAL FORCES HANDBOOK and is more specific in its instructions and info. I assume that it has been replaced in today's army by more up-to-date publications, but for what it is, it is very good, dry and concise but quite useful. Those considering buying it (which presumably excludes active duty military personnel) should look inside the book first and see if it fits their needs or interests. Some of the information is definitely dated. For instance, the radio and communications data was intended for equipment no longer in use by the army. The same applies to the other equipment described in the manual. The underlying principles are still the same, however.

The good aspects of this FM have been praised by others, and as far as that goes, I fully agree... However...

Special Forces often operate with indigenous populations, whose trust they must earn. It is not enough to learn some of the local language. It is important not to look stupid, or else all respect, and incentive to cooperate is lost.

FM 31-20 has some "cultural `No-No's" that would inevitably make us look stupid... Example: Page 289, "Dust Initiator". It says, as an example of "cultural stupidity":
"From 1.36 to 2.67 kilograms of surround should be provided for each 28.32 cubic meters of target."

This was clearly "translated" in response to a directive "go metric" from the original text:

"From 3 to 6 pounds of of surround should be provided for each 1000 cubic feet of target"

Whereas the original sounds practical, the "translation" sounds so stupid that only the retarded would want to work with us... Remember, those natives, just because they speak English with an accent, or not at all, are not dumber than we are!

What it should say is: "Use 1.5 to 3 kilograms of surround for each 30 cubic meters of target - or if you wish, for each target volume of 3m x 3m x 3m".

There are a large number of examples of this kind of "cultural dumbness" in the manual. This is not just hair-splitting. If they think we are dumb, they sure will not help us. Perhaps pretend to do so, but not for long...

I would like to recommend other things in addition to this book.

First of all; if you would like to know something about SOF, you should start reading the US doctrine of Spec Ops. This subject is not available for civilians for a while; as far as i know...it's apprx. 1100 pages.

But... you can study FM 21-75,FM 21-76 and FM 21-76-1.If you can get them...

In addition i recommend FM 31-70 "Basic Cold Weather Training"
You should know that it won't be easy to find these now..But they are a valueable asset in understanding some matters.

There is also an other book available:
Theory of Special Operations(Case Study)
This one is a must read...Not only for enlisted personnel but also for civilians. And it's easy to get this...

At last i would like to attend you on the fact of philosophy and warfare.. And why a soldair should be a thinker first..If you agree with me then you should read: Gates of Fire or Tides of War

SInce this books talks about different topics, like psychologic, radio transmitters and antennas, survival, and about how to make soap from nature, anyone will find it very interesting, its easy to read, and very enjoyable for those people who want to know a little about everything.

Guerrilla warfare & Spec Forces........2000-11-17

With a pocket size, this book has all you have to know about guerrilla warfare, counterguerrilla tactics, Unconventional Warfare, demolitions, raids & ambushes, water ops, etc, etc, etc.

It even has a whole section dedicated to Psychological ops!

All the info in the book is great, well exept the infiltration part that doesnt have pics or more detailed info.

Im telling you, this is da book!

Fiero has done a wonderful job surveying history, making it enjoyable and interesting to almost any reader. With pictures of artwork and architecture, Fiero's text is enchanced, allowing the reading to gain a broader view into history from the enlightenment to modern times. As with many history books, the writer's presuppitions are reflected in their writing. Fiero follows this trend, allowing her feministic presupptions to interpret history. While this is not so evident in volumes 4 and 5, in volume 6 (a review of modern times), this view is highly stated. This series (including the first 3 volumes) is a wonderful review of history, allowing the reader to see into various cultures throughout history.

I wanted a book for by granddaughter who is 10 and who had expressed an interested in tornadoes. It was, perhaps, a little above her level, however it can be read in parts. I ended up reading the entire thing before I could let go of it to send it on. Puts the tornado,the incidence of seeing one, and the likelihood of experiencing damage all into perspective. Knocks down the myths of tornadoes, when, where and what they strike. A must for any library on meteorology. Sufficient statistics and hard science to satisfy even the already knowledgeable storm chaser.

Since there's a lot of science going on behind tornado occurances -many myths have developed since the phenomena is so scary & hard to explain

Thomas P. Grazillus manages to do just that in this book - explain the science behind the tornado so the average joe could undertand it, while explaining the truth about myths, while trying to understand where these myths have risen from.

Ideal quick reference on tornadoes.......2004-07-05

From the intorduction, you read that the author's intent with this book was to write a modernized edition of Snowden D. Flora's 1953 book "Tornadoes of the United States" -- which was billed at the time as the first general reference book on tornadoes. In that respect, Tom Grazulis has fully succeeded.

"The Tornado" covers all the basics about tornadoes, like the highly complicated (and still enigmatic) process of tornado formation, forecasting, historical aspects of tornadoes -- as well as major tornadic events of the past, safety, climatology/frequncy, international frequency and major events, the Fujita scale, myths (more than you might think), and a pleasingly non-sensational chapter on storm chasing.

The text is never too complicated, and even the more technical points are easy to understand. The fact that the book is up-to-date is also a plus, as is the scope of the book's coverage. It's also somewhat more relevant to an American audience than Arjen and Jerrine Verkaik's "Under the Whirlwind," which -- though good, and including some of what this book covers -- was written with a Canadian audience in mind. (In which case Canadian readers are advised to read that book before this.)

About the only real minus is that there are limited illustrations, and those in the book are black and white. This text accompanied with more -- and color -- illustrations might have been more useful, although in moderation so as not to draw attention away from the text; at any rate a section of color plates would have been a nice addition.

That aside, this is a terrific guide to all things relevant (or even just the stuff you might have thought of once!) to tornadoes.

Great Book on Tornadoes.......2002-11-29

I strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in tornadoes and wishing to learn more about the subject. Topics covered include nearly every aspect of tornado development and subsequent evolution, forecasting and warnings, the Fujita scale for rating damage, and tornado risks by geographical region. As a meteorologist, I think he does a great job communicating core scientific concepts to the reader in an easy-to-understand manner, and the chapters "Tornado Myths" and "Tornado Safety" contain valuable information and are must-reads, esp. for those less familiar with severe storms/tornadoes.

In short, a good read for anyone interested in tornadoes, and definitely a book you will want to have on your shelf.

Gone with the wind........2002-08-27

Lets start with the few negatives about this book. Grazulis does use the term, "I" fairly often in this book. This doesn't bother me as much as it does some people. He has to use the first person as he explains what brought about his interest in tornadoes and he has been involved in much of the research he talks about. The only real drawback I can find is that he gets a little too technical for the average reader on occasion. Still, considering the complicated nature of his subject I think he does a fine job of getting his point across and helping someone like me began to understand these killer storms.

Grazulis leads us down the path of tornado history making stops along the way to point out interesting facts. The reader is given stories of survival as well as tragedy. We even get a story about the one of the 18th century's most famous scientists chasing on horseback after what may or may not have been a tornado. I can just see Ben Franklin charging down the road in hot pursuit. Grazulis also spends some time trashing some tornado myths and giving some safety tips. There is also a very interesting chapter on tornadoes in other countries. I have even begun to understand what straight line winds and downbursts are because of this book.

Best of all the reader will be treated to an inside look at the progress science has made in understanding and predicting tornadoes. The new equipment, the new ideas, and the ever present danger of trying to get too close to a tornado to study it. Science has come a long way since early April, 1974 when forecasters all over the eastern U.S. watched the "Super Outbreak" on surplus World War II radar.

No matter if you are a weather junkie or are just in awe of the power of nature I feel sure you will find this to be an interesting read.

Decent material, but not enough of it for the price.......1999-05-31

The first 90 pages of this book are the best. They include an overview of recycling and issues, then go into some detail how the various materials (metals, glass, papers, etc) are recycled and re-used. This section has many interesting collected factoids ("Today's average beverage bottle contains 30% recycled glass"), but they are not organized or synthesized into a coherent picture.

The remainder of this 330-page book is padded with less-useful and boring reference material: recycling laws by state, recycling associations by state, and a list of references (books, articles, journals and web sites).

Overall I think the price is steep for what is essentially a 90-page booklet.

A more worthy book on (paper) recycling can be found in "Recycled Papers: The Essential Guide" by Claudia Thompson.
