Options, Futures and Other Derivatives (6th Edition)
ASIN: 0875845606 |
Book Description
Arditti describes and explains four major classes of derivative instruments: options, futures, interest rate swaps, and mortgage derivatives. He discusses each market's structure and the applications and pricing of each instrument, focusing on the valuation methods that are most commonly used by professional market participants. Each segment begins with a description of the institutional arrangements that have come to characterize the markets in which the instruments trade. Arditti examines basic derivatives in each class with respect to their risk transference properties, risk management applications, and pricing. He then traces the evolution of these markets in terms of new instruments introduced, the factors inspiring their development, and the alterations in pricing technology required by more complex derivatives. Arditti includes numerical examples to clarify the procedures. The Financial Management Association Survey and Synthesis Series.
Customer Reviews:
Very good Book for a practitioner.......2005-12-09
I found the book very useful in practice. It gave you a lot of details.
Very poorly written.......2004-02-13
I found Arditti's writing to be simply attrocious. What the marketplace needs is a clear, concise guide to instrument structure and valuation, and Mr. Arditti writes in circles. As an example, his chapter on option pricing refers to "using the methods used previously in this chapter" without referring to how to apply these to the method just introduced. The method just introduced was explained using numbers that were presumably fabricated, but lord only knows, because the author can't be bothered to specify how his example was structured.
In trying to explain things simply, the author fails to explain anything clearly. "Derivatives" is an extreme disappointment. As a reference, this book may have some use, but if you're looking to learn something from it, stear clear.
He knows how to design derivatives and make them work.......2003-07-28
I am completely satisfied with this book. He knows how to design derivatives and make them work. This book does a remarkable job of explaining the theory and practice of derivative securities.
EXCELLENT AND IN PATCHES OUTSTANDING.......2000-08-09
This book is an excellent resource for beginning and intermediate level fund managers who want to understand the derivatives to be able to use them in risk hedging and income maximization.
The book is excellently organized in four sections and each section is self sufficient. Each of the sections begin with basics, illustrates the concepts with example, introduces the mathematics of pricing and methodology of hedginag of risks
Every section has also a nice subsection on terminology and definitions.
The book is an excellent attempt to explain a highly technical and complex subject. The section on Interest Rate swaps is outstanding. A must read for all corporate money managers and a must addition to all financial libraries.
Book Description
The growth of derivative markets during the past decade has been nothing short of astounding and so, of late, has been the misunderstanding of their use. This is the definitive resource on derivatives and the first book to explain all four major classes of derivative instruments-options, futures, interest rate swaps, and mortgage securities-in terms of their pricing, with a focus on the valuation methods used most commonly by professional market participants. Derivatives will help investment bankers, corporate treasurers, fund managers, financial advisers, apprentice traders, and business students become more familiar with these complex instruments and increase their sense of confidence in participating in derivatives markets.

Kiran Bedi - A Transformer in the Radical Mode.......2001-04-08
Kiran Bedi is a woman who is unafraid and goes where no man has gone before. In this book she carefully documents her tenure at Tihar Jail, the largest prison in Asia. Because she has taken copious notes she is able to reconstruct her observations and experiences in great detail. From the beginning to the end she outlines what she saw, how she dealt with it, her successes and the few failures. The conditions she was met with when she got there are abominable. As more and more people get involved and begin to care, as she does, the prison grows and blossoms - from a hell hole to an ashram, from a stinking garbage heap to a fruitful colony of people who really want to change. Her emphasis over and over is on the people - actually rehabilitating everyone. "It's Always Possible" is a perfect title, as it is what she believes, what she knows is the potential for each and every human being. The story is simple, the facets many and complicated. The language is "Indian English" - at times a little different from "Standard" English. But every page is worthwhile, every paragraph brings a new insight, a new piece of the puzzle that helps to elucidate how and why Tihar Jail was the way it was and how it was possible to transform it. Prison Administration everywhere should read this book and try to meet with Ms. Bedi. What she says and how she says it is not out of reach of the normal human being. As fellow human beings on this planet we can all take inspiration and gain humility and big-heartedness from this amazing woman and her accomplishments.

String Theory in a Nutshell (In a Nutshell)
ASIN: 354033209X |
Book Description
F. J. Ynduráin's book on Quantum Chromodynamics has become a classic among advanced textbooks. First published in 1983, and translated into Russian in 1986, it now sees its fourth edition. It addresses readers with basic knowledge of field theory and particle phenomenology. The author presents the basic facts of quark and gluon physics in pedagogical form. Theory is always confronted with experimental findings. The reader will learn enough to be able to follow modern research articles. This fourth edition presents a new section on heavy quark effective theories, more material on lattice QCD and on chiral perturbation theory.

Book Description
The Lund model, inspired by quantum chromodynamics, has provided a very promising approach to the dynamics of quark and gluon interactions. Starting with a brief reprise of basic concepts in relativity, quantum mechanics of fields and particle physics, Dr. Andersson discusses the dynamics of the massless relativistic string, confinement, causality and relativistic covariance, Lund fragmentation processes, QED and QCD Bremsstrahlung, multiplicities, and particle-parton distributions. Throughout the book, theory confronts current experimental data, and considers implications for future experiments. The book also explores the relationships between the Lund model and other models based on field theory (the Schwinger model, S-matrix models, light-cone algebra physics, and variations of the parton model) and models based on statistical mechanics (the Feynman-Wilson gas, scaling, iterative cascade models). This is a unique monograph for those working in theoretical and particle physics.
Book Description
What do you do when love goes wrong? If you're Tomato "Mad Dog" Rodriguez, the reigning queen of motorcycle-riding, bicoastal bisexuals, you do every wrong thing there is to do. What starts out as a low-rent revenge complete with whipped cream, Bic ballpoints, and a two-by-four turns into a murder charge. Before Tomato knows what's happening, she's locked away in the Big House with all the rest of the bad, bad, bad girls, hoping Ilsa the Wicked Warden will think she's too crazy to be convicted on a murder charge. They Call Me Mad Dog is a cross between Caged Heat and The Women, a wild and wonderfully hilarious search for the meaning of life and a place to put the cat box.
Customer Reviews:
The kinda girl you could come to love........2006-03-11
Everything Erica Lopez writes is tragically funny and will make you feel like the kind of fierce woman who will not stand meekly by when she is wronged, but instead will obsess about it and make poor, vengeful decisions - but they wil be decisive decisions! And when it all goes wrong, she'll love you anyway, and she'll be there to smoke too many cigarettes with you and laugh bitterly about everything. Read all her books, and then call me; I'm starting my own all-girl biker gang.
Hilarity and humanity.......2005-06-09
Lopez translates all the dirty human emotions that absolutely no one cares to discuss into text in 'Mad Dog.' The result is hilarious and a completely enjoyable read.
Another plus is that it's a relatively easy and painless read. The illustrations are an added bonus.
It got me through the war in Iraq...........2004-07-05
A friend in San Francisco mailed this to me last year just prior to the start of combat in Iraq. I sat up late at night with mortars and artillery booming, and laughed my ass off. To make matters worse, there was a guy in my platoon who is from the Castro who's mom and grandmother used to enjoy making cocktails and watching Matlock topless. He was talking about it one day (he's 18, and hadn't heard of the book), and when I showed it to him, he just had a strange look on his face and said he would call home when he could...
Yay!.......2001-10-01
Even more fun than 'Flaming Iguanas!!'
Damn, it's so difficult to write about why this book was so good without sounding stilted and phony. It's great because just about everyone can identify with Tomato's revenge fantasies, impulsiveness and goofy melodramatic streak, not to mention her social faux pas. It's lots of fun to get the vicarious thrill of watching her act out her deranged fantasies since most of us are really too inhibited to carry out much more than a low-key stalking of an ex. It's also great to see characters that are as weird as the psychos I come across in the course of my day.
:)
EMC and FMPs, Read to know!.......2000-07-21
This book is hilarious...I was literally laughing out loud...My friend recommended it to me, and I couldn't put it down...I suppose reading it in Sophomore Algebra wasn't the best plan, but at least I had enough sense to hide it from my mom, but I guess if you are a legal adult you won't have these problems...ENJOY!
Book Description
Authors Adam H. and Alan R. of the 'Beast 85' Special Forces team, disguised and dressed in Taliban garb, successfully tracked down al Qaeda and Taliban leaders in the Deh Rawod region of Afghanistan. Their team captured three of the most wanted men in the country, including Mullah Osmani. Two weeks later, their prize prisoner was 'gone.'
Customer Reviews:
Great book.......2006-07-17
I purchased this book last year and read it in a few days. As a former Guardsman I totally understood their plight and sentiments. Treated as the 'red headed step child' by their active duty SF counterparts, even though they all underwent the very same training process and some were former active duty SF, the book tells of their adventures in Afghanistan and how they made the best of a war bungled by career minded beauracracies. This team in fact found tons of munitions and captured one of the more notorious terrorists during their tour, all due to personal initiative instead of sitting around. That aspect of the story does in fact remind me of another excellent book I recently read, 'Roughneck Nine One.'
As a footnote, the book reveals that in fact this particular Guard unit was used as a "test run" to see how the National Guard SF component compares to their active duty counterparts.
They really never fired a shot.......2006-06-02
If you read this book carefully, the authors of this book never fired a shot in combat. They deployed. They whined. They complained. They cheated their publisher and those who helped them put this book together out of money. But they really just sat around and did nothing.
And the book ended up doing what it was predicted to do from the start. Nothing.
Good riddance.
Bureaucracy goes to war.......2006-02-02
On the one hand, I found this book really optimistic, I mean it shows "average Americans" going off to war and fighting in Afghanistan against Al Quida. I found that aspect really kind of uplifting, because it shows the strengths of America. But it is depressing to learn that even in special operations areas, the U.S. military is dominated by careerist officers and bureaucracy. The fact that our "tip of the spear" forces have to ask for permission many hours before engaging the enemy (filled out in triplicate, etc.) is just depressing. In end effect, bureaucracy no doubt helped Al Qaeda escape. So the book is a mixed bag. It is a very honest look at the "war on terror". One reason I gave it only 4 stars is, the pictures made me want to learn more, but the writing didn't go into it. For example, one picture details how good the M4 rifle is, "much better than what the enemy has", etc. But I didn't find anything in the book about that. I expected the text to go more into that. Still a really good book, that I highly recommend.
This is not a good read for thrill seekers.......2005-10-27
...but it is a good read for war junkies who like to know the nuances of modern day combat. This book has a very hard start and tends to vilify why the army recruits 18 year old soldiers who have not formulated strong opinions about the military.
If you wish to gain insights into the minds of a more aged reservist being call-up for war in the Gulf, then this would be of interest to you. It also does a good job of pointing out the inefficiencies of the military and our war doctrine to date. The author's indictments of the military are timely yet are not unique in whole or in part over the past century of warfare.
One could become dismayed over the lack of military progress as articulated this book but it should be noted that save one, every member of the bull returned to tell the story. Not every soldier over the years could make such a claim. Good or bad, this operational outcome was far more appealing then a Gallipoli.
As for future readers of this book, enjoy the nuances of modern day warfare and remember that even if the author has an axe to grind, he is at least alive to share it with you.
Boring and Immature.......2005-09-15
I picked up Hunting al Qaeda with great enthusiasm, and a couple hours later, by page 120, I found myself struggling to merely continuing reading. The book, as other reviewers have alluded to, is chock full of the team members complaining about their role in Afghanistan. As reservists, they complained about the active duty Army's acceptance of them (they made the choice to go down the 'part time' road), how they were hamstrung from winning the war by military bureaucracy, and their lack of combat. After a while, the self-congradulatory, woe-is-me style of writing really started to grate on my nerves and patience.
I found absolutely laughable the team members' being referred to by their first names only, the anonymous writing credit, and the photos with black boxes over their eyes. If you watch Discovery Times channel, these same soldiers participated in a documentary where the faces were shown and their civilian occupations listed. I'm pretty sure, but may be wrong, that they were also featured on a 60 Minutes piece about civil affairs operations in Afghanistan.
The book was an easy read, but the above mentioned items made it a difficult book to finish.

Book Description
How were cultural, political, and social identities formed in the early modern period? How were they maintained? What happened when they were contested? What meanings did “community” have? This path-breaking book looks at how individuals were bound into communities by religious, professional, and social networks; the importance of place--ranging from the Parish to communities of crime; and the value of rhetoric in generating community--from the King’s English to the use of “public” as a rhetorical community. The essays offer an original, comparative, and thematic approach to the many ways in which people utilized communication, space, and symbols to constitute communities in early modern England.
