Great advice from one of the best investor advocates.......2006-06-09
Solin's book alerts investors to various broker ploys to steal investors' wealth. All these schemes are dishonest - most are illegal. The book shows investors how to hold accountable their brokers who claim to be looking out for their clients' interest and charge large fees to allegedly do so. This is great advice from one of the best investor advocates.
No secrets.......2004-01-23
I borrowed this book from a friend because I couldn't believe the inflamatory title. Well no surprise, nothing new. If you're investing in this day and age and you don't want to pay attention to the activity in your brokerage account or you don't feel like you have the intelligence to understand the market, pay a management fee, get a discretionary account, and have the broker direct the investing. As a regular investor, I'm responsible for the decisions I make and the stocks I purchase. I think it is insulting and highly unethical to sue just because you lost money in the market. Don't bother with the book.
Insight & Assistance for the Beleaguered & Bewildered.......2003-10-10
Most investors in the stock market lack the sophistication to really understand what their broker is doingýor not doingýwith their hard-earned money. If brokers are not well- trained in how to serve their clients and/or theyýre more focused on lining their pockets rather than their clientsý pockets, investors can lose their shirtsýand then some. When their world crashes around them, these troubled people go to professionals like Daniel Solin.
During this painful time, investors learn what they should have known long before. Sometimes they can recoup some of their losses, sometimes not. Understanding the playing field before suiting up means a considerably better chance at winning the game (or at least playing well). Solin teaches readersýin page after high content pageýwhat brokers do to damage their clients. Unconditional trust in your broker may not be the wisest move. The potential for fraud is rampant. Youýll learn about churning, frontrunning, unauthorized trading, and a host of other malpractices that create risks beyond the market itself for the unwitting investor.
Solin is a trial attorney with over three decades of experience. He has recovered millions of dollars for investors who have been mistreated by brokersýeven those employed by well-known and respected brokerage firms. He doesnýt always win, so readers should not get the idea that Solin is some sort of guardian angel. The good, the bad, and the ugly are presented in stories and case studies, with the outcomes explained. Reading this book will help you protect yourself. An educated buyer is a wiser and safer buyer.
The book is almost a page-turner, but not quite. It wasnýt written to be a fun read. Youýll probably want to do some highlighting, some page-turning, and some note-taking. As a result of using this book as an educational tool, youýll be better equipped to ask questions, to insist on certain information, to protect yourself just a bit better than the average guy or gal with money in the market.
A glossary, index, and solid explanations of risks and arbitration make this book a valuable resource.
Retail Investors...IF you think you have a claim..........2003-07-13
...you should read this book. If not, Dan Solin's book, DOES YOUR BROKER OWE YOU MONEY? is an excellent primer for those wanting to understand the 'inside skinny' of the brokerage business, responsibilities of brokers, alternatives to aggreived investors and possibilities for recovery if damaged.
I've been in the litigation consulting game (as a consulting and testifying expert) for close to a decade now, primarily in securities, and can say that Solin's book is the first book I've run across bringing all the pieces together in a cogent manner. While other books are out there and new ones arriving daily, Solin's book stands out as the cream of this crop. {Solin, a plaintiff's attorney, has been in the game for 30+ years. There will be and are many who will think this is his personal soapbox to drum up more business. I fervently disagree. Solin presents a solid, fact-based picture of many of the misdeeds inflicted by unscrupulous brokers. There is very little fluff here.}
Solin walks the reader through most aspects of a relationship with a broker as well as identifying the "warning signs" within the relationship for any investor to observe. In the first chapter, "Your Broker Just Might Owe You Money," Solin describes the 'chatter' many brokers use to market themselves and pick off unsuspecting investors. He then goes on to describe areas of broker fraud and NYSE/NASD/SEC violations, which he details in later chapters.
If there is one chapter I would strongly suggest most retail investors read and reread, it is Chapter 4, "Unsuitability: What's a Good Investment Strategy for You?" By and large, most lawsuits I've consulted/testified in have allegations of unsuitable investments. Simplisticly, unsuitability can be defined as a broker's disregard for an investor's risk tolerance and investment objectives. This disregard is primarily manifested in recommendations from a broker to buy a stock considered outside the risk paramters and investment objectives. For instance, many retired individuals have an IRA or 401(K) account with a broker. In most cases, these accounts are very conservative and thus, have a risk profile of 'conservative' and investment objectives to match (i.e. 'safety of principal' and 'income' are the primary investment objectives). An unsuitability claim would arise if a broker induced/encouraged/suggested a stock considered outside these parameters, say, ones fitting the 'growth' profile or 'aggressive growth' profile. In any event, this practice, particularly during the "Bubble" was prevalent as many investors wanted to participate in the market boom and were easy prey to rougish brokers.
In later chapters, Solin describes the lawsuit process, which is actually an arbitration process. Significantly all investors, when signing their new account papers with a brokerage house, agree to binding arbitration to settle disputes as opposed to having their dispute heard state or federal court. The arbitration process is simpler, quicker (in most cases), and less formal...but don't be mistaken, it is still a lawsuit and the stress and high intensity is still omnipresent. Solin does an excellent job of describing the process beginning with contacting an attorney and ending with the arbitration panel's decision. Within these chapters, Solin describes those investors wishing to "go it alone," filing a suit without an attorney. Solin gives this a fair level of play, which I admire in an attorney however, he strongly suggests (and I stronlgy concur) that anyone seeking compensation under a securities lawsuit hire the best attorney one can find.
Finally, Solin provides an excellent glossary and bibliography, one that should be used for future reference.
After reading this book, I easily rate this book 5 stars for it's clear and concise explanation, one appealing to the leity and professionals alike. Several reviews of this book describe Solin as a "talking head" or the champion of those not wishing to take responsibility for their own actions. While there is credence in the fact that many investors, while losing their proverbial shirts, are solely responsible for their losses, there are many, many investors who have been duped and even defrauded by their brokers and brokerage houses (remember the 4/28/03 SEC settlement with the 10 large brokerage houses?). Contrary to these reviewers, I believe Solin gives fair play to those responsible for their own losses and those not responsible. In any event, in my practice, I have no interest in frivolous cases and reject cases lacking merit. Inasmuch as I didn't find Solin's book unconscionable, I don't believe it to be fodder for the attorney lobby.
A very good read.
Does Your Broker Owe You Money Hits Home.......2002-10-14
Dan Solin has provided a very nice primer with detail to the person who is wondering if they lost money due to the market or due to their broker. When the market meltdown began in March 2000, the bad habits and unrestrained greed of unprofessional brokers became as transparent as handi-wrap. The customers who were lured into unsuitable investments due to the way in which commissions were paid is exposed for what it is in this book.
Whether trying to recover losses for mutual funds or simple stock transactions, Dan Solin hits the mark and provides plenty of illumination on an otherwise private and hard to understand business. This is a must read for anyone who is beginning to invest or trying to determine how to recover monies lost in the meltdown.

Book Description
Predictive control is a powerful tool in dealing with those processes with large time delays. Generalized Predictive Control GPC is the most popular approach to the subject, and this text discusses the application of GPC starting with the concept of long-range predictive control and its need in medicine particularly automated drug deliveries.; The concept of adaptation is also emphasized with respect to patient-to-patient parameter variations. Subsequent chapters discuss interactions, comparisons and various aspects of GPC. The book concludes by putting into perspective the generic nature of the architecture built around GPC and which provides model-based fault diagnosis with control.

What Fun!.......2006-07-30
This is the perfect summer read! Lot's of fun with interesting characters. Give yourself a little gift and buy this book.
This work has rhythm.......2006-01-25
The front jacket of Happy New Year, Darling! says: "con job or tender love story?" But people-smart Bennnett manages to balance both story elements in a first novel that exudes charm and great humor.
Bennett, the heroine of this clever pastiche, is a former entertainment director who now books acts from her home. She is saddled with debt, a wayward teenage son and a guitarist husband whose "thimble runnerth over" when it comes to love. Desperate to save her home from foreclosure, Veronica plays matchmaker, advertising fantasy dates for New Year's Eve. Reeling in a wealthy geezer, she must book the talent to play his deceased opera-singer wife, his mistress and his stepson. Meanwhile, Veronica is savoring a sweet romance with celebrated composer, Mickey Owens, whose positive energy she basks in like a "cat on a windowsill." As the big night approaches, surprises abound.
Bennett does cartwheels with the language, turning cliches upside down and inventing words like "anecdote-a-thon" and "perkadelic." Her chapter headings contain wise and often amusing quotations. Her narrative is fresh and stylish. Writing from inside the entertainment business, she knows how to entertain. I look forward to her next book.
Happy New Year Darling.......2006-01-10
Very entertaining and enjoyable. Give yourself a treat and read it.
More Nathanial West than Chick Lit ..........2006-01-03
A wonderful little book. The raging teen drama and edgy family life are a barbed wire frame to such a heart wrenching romance. And yet Miss Bennett gives us 'laugh out loud' outrageousness reminding this reader of Carl Hiassen ... Her Con Job is the final ingredient in a tearful and totally unexpected last act. It may take a while but this a writer headed for the best seller list.
"Good Read".......2005-12-28
Enjoyed the read! Author put togeather a very interesting insight to the entertaiment business dealing with the unsung workers of the business.

Fabulous:).......2004-03-21
This is one of my favorite Margaret St George books of all time. The couple meets on New Years Eve- he's her roommate's boyfriend, she's protesting at a rally for free women's toilets...They spend the evening together and have a conversation...and a New Year's kiss...and realize that if they had met each other first, things would have been very different. It starts a tradition that every year they get together for New Years. However, neither of them are single at the same time. He tries to convince her to leave her fiance` while he is single, but she can't do it. The two of them then spend most of the book conversing through letters- 10 years worth. They meet only around New Years...both of them comforting each other through life's ups and downs- deaths, births, marriage, divorce, and cheating spouses. They only prove to one another that you can be near and dear to someone's heart, no matter how physically far. When they are finally single together again, and when they finally make time for one another, they both have choices to make about where they are and what they want.

Book Description
In this provocative and compelling examination of the deep politics of war, Carolyn Nordstrom takes us from the immediacy of war-zone survival, through the offices of power brokers, to vast extra-legal networks that fuel war and international profiteering. She captures the human face of the front lines, revealing both the visible and the hidden realities of war in the twenty-first century. Shadows of War is grounded in ethnographic research carried out at the epicenters of political violence on several continents. Its pages are populated not only with the perpetrators and victims of war but also with the scoundrels, silent heroes, and average families who live their lives in the midst of explosive violence. War reconfigures our most basic notions of humanity, Nordstrom demonstrates. This book, of crucial importance at the present moment, shows that war is enmeshed in struggles over the very foundations of the sovereign state, the crafting of economic empires both legal and illegal, and innovative searches for peace.
Nordstrom describes the multi-trillion-dollar international financial networks that support warfare. She traces the entangled routes by which illegal drugs, precious gems, weapons, basic food supplies, and pharmaceuticals are moved by an international cast of businesspeople, profiteers, and black-market operators. Shadows of War demonstrates how the experiences of both the architects of war and of ordinary people are deleted from media accounts and replaced with stories about soldiers, weapons, and territory. For the first time, this book retrieves from the shadows the faces of those whose stories seldom reach the light of international recognition.
Customer Reviews:
Another great work from Nordstrom.......2006-08-19
Dr. Nordstrom consistently goes where most of us never will, both physically and intellectually. Another great work.
A tremendously rich work, a revelation........2004-11-24
This book reveals aspects of war normally "in the shadows"--the vast profits to be made from conflicts in resource-rich regions; the informal systems through which the resources move north to the "peaceful" developed countries and the weapons, medicines, technology of the north move south to fuel the wars and also sometimes to help heal them. This is wonderful anthropology, rich in quotes and stories from the winners and losers in war--from UN officials, profiteers, development bankers to resourceful homeless children of the streets. Shadows of War will change the way you see the world. It has tremendous implicatons for the future of all of us in the 21st century, who live amongst the realities of extra-state power (like bin Laden's) that we are hardly beginning to understand.
Good Storyteller, Poor Academic.......2004-09-18
Attempting to do research in the field of war and developing, I have mixed feelings about the utility of this book. As a collection of first-hand stories about conflict in Mozambique, the book does an admirable job, and I suspect that anyone who treats it as a adventure travel book with some political overtones will enjoy it. Treat it like early Robert Kaplan, and it will be worth your while.
However, if you're looking for some substantial insight into the living conditions of a ravaged permament conflict-ridden region of the world, I find it lacks academic rigour. Prof Nordstrom begins to chart economic relationships that both fuel and rape the region, yet does so half-heartedly. She discusses the societal strain that the conflict has caused, yet again does so as a storyteller rather than an academic. Although there were a few interesting anecdotes, I felt like I was reading "Chicken Soup for the Soul".
The bottom line is, if you're looking for academic insight, look elsewhere. As a description of life in Mozambique, the book is fine.
I won't even go into the fact that little is given in the way of solution at the end of the book. Regardless what you feel your role is as an academic, I would have thought rational due diligence would have at least inspired you to write guidance on potential solutions. Otherwise, why read the book?
As a postscript, if you've spent any time yourself in developing nations and are looking for this to supplement your experience, you'll find nothing new here.
Lessons and realities of life in shadows of armed conflict.......2004-07-23
This is a wonderful book to understand what is ?normality? outside the vision of the Media but the essence of our century for much of the world. Simplistic phrases like ?failed state? don?t cut it and their use by diplomats, policy makers, or pundits merely proves their ignorance and/or superficiality. It is usually also evidence that they don?t really care a bit so long as raw materials from these areas make it to world markets.
Many people and a very significant part of the world economy is in this ?unofficial? and shadowlike area. Many depend upon it without even knowing that it exists. (Violent ?terrorism? is our present obsession but not the only storyline to understand much of the world.)
The author is an Anthropologist who has spent considerable time in various no-man?s lands especially in Southern Africa and explains some of the illicit ?order? that keeps things going in war, borderlands, and general chaos. There are brief comparative references to Latin America as well. The analysis and description is the best I have ever seen in print (much deeper than Kaplan?s Coming Anarchy which might be the nearest comparison although very different in style and with little real analysis).
Perhaps a fifth of the book is telling anecdotes that humanize the book and are relevant but which could be skipped if a reader had little time (these are clearly identified in small print and spacing.) Other readers will find these the most approachable part of the book.
Crime, violence, child soldiers, smuggling, viciousness are here. But so are some means of continuing trade and human relations, some sparks of peace and order and even some hopeful examples of places gradually finding their path back to more civil society. From children living in ?clean? storm drains as family, to unrecognized states formed in areas of noted violence, to gradual reconciliation after war and violence ? there are lessons to be learned and some small ray of hope.
Book Description
Updated with a new chapter by Davíd Carrasco describing how the Aztec world has been re-imagined by modern Mexican American communities and Chicano scholars, Moctezuma's Mexico is a lavishly illustrated volume that provides an in-depth historical profile of the Aztec empire on the eve of its fateful encounter with the Europeans. Beginning with an exploration of Aztec history and cosmology, the authors and two other prominent scholars--Anthony Aveni and Elizabeth Hill Boone-examine Aztec ceremonies, astronomy, myths, rhetoric, and moral philosophy, as well as controversies in recent Aztec scholarship using poetry, sculpture, painting, and the archaeological record.
With nearly 150 full-color illustrations, Moctezuma's Mexico is an important and handsome book that will appeal to scholars and students of Mexico's indigenous past.
Customer Reviews:
Superb Illustrations of Aztec Life.......2000-07-06
This is a splendid book detailing life in Mexico before the conquest by the Spaniards. Beginning with the inside covers the book is rich in pictoral description. The endpapers are beautiful color reproductions of Diego Rivera's "The Great City of Tenochtitlan", a lavish tribute mural of Aztec life that adorns the Palacio Nacional in Mexico City. The color is magnificent throughout the book and includes many artifacts left from the ancient Aztecs. The book also includes a great little glossary that includes a pronunciation guide to Nahuatl terms. The glossary serves as a fine introduction to the Nahuatl Language and it's phonetics. Although the authors and contributors are scholars, the book is easy to read for the average person interested in archaeology and Pre-Columbian life in Mexico. The color plates are some of the finest and include rare glimpses into Codex's that are housed in museums. A magnificent book to use as reference. The book is also a great source of information for further research as it includes a selected bibliography. An excellent view of Aztec life, it compliments any personal library. If you love the Art of Pre-Columbian Mexico this book is also a source of inspiration.
Well-written but not too dry or scholarly, with great photos.......1998-12-27
Developed by four distinguished Mesoamerican scholars for an exhibit at the Denver Museum of Natural History (1992 - 1993). Great photographs of artifacts (jade masks, human skulls, sculptures), buildings and manuscripts. Well-written (not dry or too scholarly). It's been on my coffee table for years but I never tire of looking at it.

Book Description
In this easy-to-read series, eminent science writers John and Mary Gribbin look at the lives and work of eight major scientists. Each book is accessible enough to be read for fun but informative enough to appeal to students of science. The iconic Albert Einstein emerges as a dashing ladies' man and the greatest scientist of his time; but why did Charles Darwin wait for decades before going public with his ideas on evolution? How was Marie Curie's great work shaped by her childhood experiences of oppression under the Czars? And what was Edmond Halley, of comet fame, doing as Captain of a King's Ship and later spy for the Crown? An introduction and afterword places each scientist's work in the context of the development of their subject.

Book Description
This book describes an extremely timely subject: the impact on the atmosphere of the changing use of land - notably deforestation - in the tropical forests of Asia. The authors have approached this problem from a variety of perspectives, including use of historical data, socioeconomic analyses, computer modeling, and ecological field research. While the research emphasizes atmospheric carbon dioxide and southeast Asia as a case study, the implications are global in their significance.
