Originally published in 1979, this book is the result of 20 years' experience in teaching soil chemistry and directing graduate research in soil science. Its objective is to bridge the gap between soil science and soil chemistry and to show that most reactions taking place in soils can be understood and predicted from basic chemical relationships. Emphasis is placed on minerals and solid phases in soils that dissolve and precipitate,and in doing so, control the composition of the soil solution. This is the only comprehensive treatment of chemical equilibria in the soil environment that is available. Other texts deal well with the kinetics of reactions in soils but touch lightly on the equilibrium concepts. This text is intended for soil scientists, plant nutritionists, aquatic chemists, geochemists, sanitary and water engineers, environmentalists, and others who are concerned with the reactions, solubility relationships, and fate of chemical substances in soils. This text is more universal in its application than the title may suggest. Chemical equilibrium concepts are commonly used in hydrologic, geologic, and environmental engineering applications. Any earth surface system whose character is influenced by species in aqueous solution can be analyzed by the concepts and methodology described by Dr. Lindsay. The types of problems to which application of equilibrium analysis are valuable include agricultural soil ammendments and fertilization, aquaculture media, waste treatment systems, soil and groundwater contamination and remediation, mine waste and drainage mitigation, and any soil or hydrologic environment that has been contaminated. Problems in these areas are common but critical issues in our modern world, and this book provides the theoretical and empirical basis needed by environmental scientists and engineers. Dr. Lindsay's approach combines basic chemical equilibrium theory with extensive empirical knowledge derived from his own and many other's work in equilibrium speciation. There are several commonly available collections of chemical equilibrium data but this text provides this information in the context of soil, agricultural, and environmental problems and analysis. Chemical speciation computer models, though common now, were new when this text was first published, yet these models compliment rather replace this information. The tables and graphs are well presented and invaluable references. The problems at the end of each section emphasize common traditional soil and agricultural situations, useful for both the new student and those refreshing their memory. A very approachable book, and still useful as a reference tool.

Doubled Over With Laughter.......2000-04-20

In the introduction to his book "Northern Reflections", Jerry Harju reveals that it's a book about growing up in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in the 1940's and is perhaps most appreciated by those who can identify with that.

While I'm familiar with Upper Michigan and its culture, I did not grow up in the 40's, and still found plenty of good reading here.

If you're new to reading humorous books (as I am), I recommend this one as a great place to start. It's an easy read, comprised of short chapters, each its own story, so you can pick it up, read a chapter, and come back for more later as time permits.

The author's humor has a wonderful way of sneaking up on a person. And just when I thought it couldn't get any funnier, I'd start the next chapter, and before I knew it, I'd find myself doubled over with even greater helpless laughter! Teens may appreciate it, too. From a first job, to dating, to his first car, Jerry covers it all, against the backdrop of small-town life in the rugged climate of northern Michigan.

"Yoopers" (as U.P.'ers are known), especially, should appreciate it; but even if you're not a Yooper, there's still lots to laugh about.

Excellent coverage of Japanese American military effort.......2004-02-12

I found the book to be an excellent coverage of the Japanese American military effort during the Second World War. The book does more then relates the stories of the Japanese-American combat units but also go into other fields that these folks went into which proves to highly useful and valuable in the war effort. Serving as translators, working in military intelligence service and working on propagranda were all important duties served by the Japanese-American soldiers who often had to fight this war on two fronts....the enemies and their own side. I found the book to be well written, well researched and quite informative.

War at home.......2003-07-01

This book was written with hopes that those who have yet to come might grasp all aspects of the conflict known as WWII beyond those we might have seen courtesy of Frank Capra and news reels. If anyone has ever assumed the allies were without internal strife, that I am sad to say is a great wrong, for in fact the allies were split, not just in country, but by color, and race. This book tells the tail of the men of the 442nd Go for Broke, as well as the OSS Pacific theater translators who risked their lives and shed their blood for a country who, at the time housed their families in interment camps and took away their civil liberties. We were fighting the good fight, this is true and please do not think I hate my country, I would still fight for her and all her residence, but in that era it was not always so and this is obvious here. The turmoil one faces from both fronts in a war is relevent here as well as the feeling that most veterans felt when they knew friends for so long who the next morning would be killed. This story is also one of redemption, of how the Nisei not only proved themselves, but became one of the greatest units in the ETO around Italy. They shared the grief of their comrads in arms, the lack of supplies which hit all units of the campaign against Mt. Cassino and the light hearted moments on the Champaign campaign, an assignment that was not as horrible as those days in the Italian winter. To anyone who thinks America was a dog nation then, that is false. We learned from our faults, and today we honor these brave men, and always should.

The Basques' remarkable role in the establishment and exploitation of Spain's vast American empire is well known, but until now the impact of these achievements on the Basque Country itself has received little attention. In this pioneering study, Juan Javier Pescador has meticulously examined three centuries of social and economic change in the Oiartzun Valley of Gipuzkoa, a typical Basque peasant community remarkably altered by its contacts with the New World.

Many individuals from Oiartzun--mostly male--sought their fortunes in the New World. The wealth that some of them brought back forever disrupted Oiartzun's traditional economy and hierarchy. But social norms were no less altered. In the absence of menfolk who had gone to America, the women of Oiartzun assumed new responsibilities on the family farmsteads and in the community. The local Church found itself expected to adopt New World religious practices and saints popular with returning adventurers. And the changing roles of personal and family wealth, individual responsibility, and social relationships affected attitudes toward such intimate matters as sexuality, the recognition and treatment of illegitimate children, and the practice of charity, as well as perceptions about identity, memory, and local history.

This is a classic for anyone interested in machine learning, data mining or predictive statistics. Though it is beginning to age, it covers essential aspects of empirical modeling still not covered by many more recent titles (!). A subsequent effort by one of the authors, "Predictive Data Mining" is a bit more current though shorter on the fundamentals.

Still a good intro to predictive modeling.......2000-04-14

This book gives a good cohesive introduction to the basic algorithms from Statistics, Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition research. These include Nearest Neighbor, Decision Trees, Bayesian Networks, and Neural Networks.

The main value of the book however is its coverage of techniques that 1) estimate a model's accuracy, and 2) select a 'good' model. This book offers the reader a solid foundation to what we are trying to achieve: to get at the objective truth.
