The Financial Numbers Game: Detecting Creative Accounting Practices
ASIN: 0849308984 |
Book Description
This book guides accountants step-by-step through the judicial process-from the first interview with an attorney client to what can happen after a trial. For lawyers, the book explains how to use the forensic accountant to greatest benefit. It shows the lawyer how to help the accountant in the discovery process and in the formulation of questions for use in direct and cross-examination. It also discusses essential details, such as the proper contents of a job engagement letter and acceptable formats for reports. The material also covers larger concepts, such as preparing for depositions and analyzing court-filed documents. The book even provides such practical information as where to find a forensic accountant and how to determine whether the right one was chosen. The authors provide numerous case studies, annotated court documents, expert witness reports, and an actual trial transcript of an expert's testimony.
Customer Reviews:
Waste 'O Money.......2003-07-18
This book is absolutely terrible. Forget the fact that the authors offend every woman by consistently referring to a potential forensic accountant as "he". (Yes, there are women doing this...me, for example.) Forget that their sample letters start out addressed to "gentlemen". (Certainly no women run companies or ever need forensic accounting services, do they?)
All the reasons why I dislike this book:
1. See information above
2. Really, super boring
3. Not very good logical flow throughout the chapters.
4. Drawn out, extremely boring examples
5. Very "old school" examples that don't keep up with the times
6. Gave me virtually no new information. (One would think this type of book would be written to help both the wanna-be's and the already-are's.)
7. Very little substance behind the information.
8. Grammar errors...Where's your editor? And don't you mention in the book that good grammar is key when writing reports?
I could go on and on. I've said enough. Would love to get rid of my copy. Wanna buy it?
..........2003-07-08
Written specifically for accountants who wish to become expert witnesses for accounting matters and for the lawyers who wish to use them effectively "Expert Witnessing in Forensic Accounting" provides a solid base on which to build. The book provides well-reasoned advice to teach the ins and outs of expert witnessing that is specifically oriented toward accounting.
Some of the questions answered in this book include:
Do I need the expert witness to be a CPA?
What other experts might be better for a particular case?
How do I determine the best expert for my needs?
How does the expert prepare and what legal documents are needed?
How does the relationship with the lawyer and client affect attorney-client privilege?
How does the relationship affect the work product?
How do you determine the significant issue?
How do you explain accounting procedures to non-technical jury members?
"Expert Witnessing in Forensic Accounting" covers it all from the theoretical underpinnings of things like qualifying and testifying as an expert witness to the practical aspects of things like engagement letters and preparation for testifying. While most accounting or litigation texts have a section or two on the use of a forensic accountant as an expert witness, I have seen none that cover it as extensively as this text. For the accountant trying to get into forensic accounting, for the lawyer wishing to make better use of a forensic accountant, or for either seeking to improve their professional recognition in this area this is a highly recommended read.

Book Description
Lending and borrowing were commonplace in Athens during the fourth century BC and could involve interest rates, security and banks, but the part played by credit was very different from its familiar role in capitalist society. Using a combination of sources, but concentrating on the law-court speeches of the Attic orators, Dr Millett shows that it is possible to see how lending and borrowing were a way of ordering social relations between Athenian citizens. Although debt could be disruptive, it had as its more positive side the strengthening of ties between individuals. That was, in turn, an aspect of the solidarity between citizens that was a part of the Athenian democracy.

Book Description
This work provides an overview of the regulatory, economic and policy forces which have shaped the organisation, development and internationalisation of the petroleum industry, focusing on the role of industry and government in the production and use of petroleum. The author analyses the development and working of the oil and natural gas markets, including issues such as the cost of supply and the establishment of producer prices, and the government policies underpinning the scope, objectives and structure of petroleum legislation. The discussion covers the main forms of co-operative production agreements, including joint ventures and unitisation agreements, licensing regimes, production sharing contracts, petroleum taxation and the international regulation of onshore and offshore petroleum operations. The book's broad scope, taking in law, economics and policy, will be of particular interest to lawyers, petroleum venture managers, independent consultants and other professionals who advise on the economic, regulatory and co-operative aspects of petroleum operations.

Book Description
Neutral models are constructed to help scientists understand complex patterns of form, structure, or behavior that may not be observed directly. In this unique volume, eight distinguished scientists present a comprehensive study of the use of neutral models in testing biological theories. They describe the principles of model testing and explore how they are applied to research in molecular biology, genetics, ecology, evolution, and paleontology. In addition to the editors, the contributors include Stephen Stigler, David Raup, Paul Harvey, L.B. Slobodkin, Stuart Kauffman, William Wimsatt, and James Crow.

Book Description
This book makes a global survey of nonperturbative aspects of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) from the viewpoints of mathematical, elementary-particle and hadron physics, including recent lattice-QCD results. It presents current, important progress in the following areas: the quark confinement mechanism, dynamical chiral-symmetry breaking, topologies in QCD (instantons, monopoles, vortices), SUSY QCD, nonperturbative methods (1/Nc, ladder QCD, AdS/CFT), QCD phase transition at finite temperature and density, quark-gluon plasma, and so on. For recent topics, the book also includes the experimental discovery of the penta-quark particle, the newest information on the QGP creation experiments, and theoretical progress on the baryonic three-quark potential and the high-density QCD.

Book Description
An emotionally charged addition to Rebecca Wells' award-winning bestseller
Little Altars Everywhere and #1
New York Times bestseller
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood,
Ya-Yas in Bloom reveals the roots of the Ya-Yas' friendship in the 1930s and roars through sixty years of marriage, children, and hair-raising family secrets.
When four-year-old Teensy Whitman prisses one time too many and stuffs a big old pecan up her nose, she sets off the chain of events that lead Vivi, Teensy, Caro, and Necie to become true sister-friends.
Ya-Yas in Bloom shows us the Ya-Yas in love and at war with convention. Through crises of faith and hilarious lapses of parenting skills, brushes with alcoholism and glimpses of the dark reality of racial bigotry, the Ya-Ya values of unconditional loyalty, high style, and Cajun sass shine through at a time when the dynamic web of sisterhood is the only safety net strong enough to hold families together and endure.

TERRIBLE.......2007-07-17
I loved the first YaYa book, enjoyed the second, and hated this one. It had no story, it resembled a book of short stories but not enjoyable ones. Clearly the author just wanted to make some quick money or something, I can't think of another reason why she would have written this. I had liked and cared about the characters, and in this book I couldn't stand any of them.
Wilted..........2007-04-26
This is Louisiana native, Rebecca Wells' third installment into the Ya-Ya Sisterhood Saga. Wells, who is also an actor and playwright, has been riding high on the success of the bestseller Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood which has been translated into 23 languages since its release in 1996.
If you are not familiar with the Ya-Yas, they are four Louisiana women who've been friends since childhood (as young as 4) in the 1930s. Once a Ya-Ya, always a Ya-Ya. It even gets passed down through lineage producing Petite Ya-Yas (their children) and Tres Petites Ya-Yas (their grandchildren). Ya-Yas hold friendship and family at the top of their list of values along with "unconditional loyalty, high-style and southern sass".
Ya-Yas in Bloom starts off with family tree diagrams for each Ya-Ya, Vivi, Caro, Teensy and Necie. As I continued to read I found them to be a definite asset, having to refer to them numerous times. The following chapters are divided into four sections titled: Sowing Sisterhood Seeds, Tending Young Buds, Bruised Plantings, and A Bountiful Garden.
Ya-Yas in Bloom continues to languish on the emotional ties present amongst women and the bond of "true sister-friends". At page three I decided I was going to like this book because of the voice. The opening story was narrated by Vivi who's 68 going on 49. Unfortunately this feeling didn't hold until the end. More than half way through it began to feel like a bunch of leftover vignettes thrown together. There are just too many narrators: Vivi, Sidda, Baylor and even the occasional omnipresent voice take the reins. Ya-Yas in Bloom reads like the special features on a DVD giving some background on the well-loved characters.
What I enjoyed most about Bloom is the loyalty of the characters to one another and to one another's family. I enjoyed reading about Ya-Ya parties and how everyone prepared for the events; even the children who often hid watching in awe of their Ya-Ya parents. And comical moments which I could relate to, like the chapter on snow in the South when Little Shep was so excited about seeing snow for the first time he ran into the glass pane of a patio door and knocked himself unconscious.
While individually, some of these stories are heart warming as a whole they don't connect into a cohesive novel. If you're an obsessive Ya-Ya fan who just can't get enough or want more background then this book is for you. Otherwise, it's too flat for popular consumption. Reviewed by M. E. Wood.
cool stuff.......2007-03-27
Loved the story...very entertaining. The copy I purchased is in excellent condition. Thanks to my seller!

Meet the Ya Ya Sisterhood in their younger days. Ya Yas in Bloom starts in 1930 with Teensy being taken to the doctor because she has shoved a pecan up her nose. She meets Vivi there and her pecan becomes immortalized for all patients to see in the years to come.
Then Teensy and Vivi plot to meet Necie because they are sure she is the famed Coco Robichaux that Genevieve, Teensy's mother, tells them about all the time. Caro is brought into the group and The Ya Ya Sisterhood is born and will remain true to each other through good times, some wild times and tough times for 60 some years.
The main focus is of the YaYa's as young mothers. The reader feels as if the author is reminiscing even though parts are from a third person's perspective rather than personal memory. However, there are parts that are Sidda's or Baylor's personal memories of events in their lives, too.
All-in-all even, though the telling through the years is somewhat disjointed - it all seems to gel into a charming, sometimes funny, sometimes sad story of life in Louisiana for the Ya Yas and their families. There are parts where the reader laughs out loud at the antics of Teensy and Vivi growing up and then gets amused at their handling of the nuns at the Catholic school when their children get into trouble.
Ms. Well's main characters are sharp witted, confident in themselves and have attitude. Throughout all, no matter what happens good or bad, they are all family and will stick together through thick and thin.
Ya, Ya, Yea, Yes!.......2007-01-07
Fun and easy reading. I have read all the "Ya Ya" books. The cover of this latest book looks like it is for or about children; it's not. The Ya Ya books follow a group of very Southern girls who are friends and relatives as they grow through the years. They tell about the fun things they do and the way they deal with each other and life in the South. They are crazy and loveable at the same time, crying, laughing, and doing outrageous things full of Southern comfort - life and drink. This latest book is about the Ya Ya's as mature women who continue to share the best times with family and each other. I smiled through every Ya Ya book, and look forward to reading more from Rebecca Wells.

Book Description
Whether they came from Sioux Falls or the Bronx, over half a million Jews entered the U.S. armed forces during the Second World War. Uprooted from their working- and middle-class neighborhoods, they joined every branch of the military and saw action on all fronts. Deborah Dash Moore offers an unprecedented view of the struggles these GI Jews faced, having to battle not only the enemy but also the prejudices of their fellow soldiers.
Through memoirs, oral histories, and letters, Moore charts the lives of fifteen young Jewish men as they faced military service and tried to make sense of its demands. From confronting pork chops to enduring front-line combat, from the temporary solace of Jewish worship to harrowing encounters with death camp survivors, we come to understand how these soldiers wrestled with what it meant to be an American and a Jew.
Moore shows how military service in World War II transformed this generation of Jews, reshaping Jewish life in America and abroad. These men challenged perceptions of Jews as simply victims of the war, and encouraged Jews throughout the diaspora to fight for what was right. At the same time, service strengthened Jews' identification with American democratic ideals, even as it confirmed the importance of their Jewish identity. GI Jews is a powerful, intimate portrayal of the costs of a conflict that was at once physical, emotional, and spiritual, as well as its profound consequences for these hitherto overlooked members of the "greatest generation."
Customer Reviews:
Ambitious History And Analysis.......2007-05-21
"GI Jews" by Deborah dash Moore. "How World War II Changed A Generation". Belknap Press, Harvard University, 2004.
The title is catchy: "GI Jews", reminding me of the toys, called "GI Joe". My son, Sean, (now a Marine Corps veteran), played with GI Joes in the early1980s. The real theme of this book, however, is expressed in the subtitle: "How World War II Changed a Generation ". How the War changed a generation of Jews. Prior to the War, both Judaism and Catholicism had been outsiders to the American dream. As Dr. Moore says on page 10, "Judaism assumed an American legitimacy unanticipated at the start of the war. Protestantism, Catholicism and Judaism were deemed to share common values that made them the religions of democracy". Further, "... (a)cceptance of the Judeo-Christian tradition in the armed forces would force Protestants to share the Christian label with Catholics and include Jews as equal partners in America". (p.10). Tis a consummation devoutly to be prayed for.
In general, this book deals with the impact on individual Jews, from Jews who were exceedingly pious to men who were hardly observant Jews ... i.e. Jews in name only. The author traces, generally in chronological order, how young Jewish men became part of the American Armed Forces, were trained and then shipped to overseas assignments, both combat and non-combat. Many of the men who were subjects of this book, came from the New York City environment, (of interest to me, since I was born, raised and educated in Hell's Kitchen. I also went to high school at 161st Street and Grand Concourse in the Bronx see page 60).
Dietary restrictions presented a challenge to religious Jews. In the chapter, entitled, "Eating Ham For Uncle Sam", (pages 49 to 85), the author, Deborah Dash Moore, recounts how "Uncle Sam" virtually ignore the ancient dietary restrictions of Jews, and the poor fellows had to eat ham or starve. Despite the author's analysis of the new sensitivity of Protestant America, when, as an example, Tip O'Neill (1912-1994) was invited to the White House for a freshman congressman dinner (1953) with then President Dwight D. Eisenhower, the menu was steak...which tip O'Neill could not eat since it was Friday. Catholics did not eat meat on Friday. The future Speaker of the House was vocal enough to demand something other than meat, and the White House chef plopped salmon from a can onto O'Neill's plate.
Another example of how things change slowly: Dr. Moore recounts how, at a USO dance in Florida , the "town girls" were happy to discover that although Walters was from Brooklyn, he was Jewish and NOT Irish Catholic. (See pages 70-71). In 1958, I was stationed at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Memphis. I went to a USO dance in downtown Memphis. The southern Belle asked me where I was from. When I answered New York City, she asked, "Are you Jewish?" "No.", I replied, "Worse yet, I'm Catholic." The Southern Belle turned her back and walked away. In Memphis, it was impossible to get a pizza or lasagna; I expect that has changed today. By the way, in 1958, the "Colored" and "White" signs were still on the water fountains.
The author includes a chapter on "Worshipping Together", which, on page 121 has the Douay Rheims version of the bible (the Catholic English version, older than the King James version in English), quoted as saving "Jews are Synagogue of Satan". I looked up the Douay version on the WEB, as the Douay English is so old that I do not have a copy in the house. The WEB does have the quotation "Jews are Synagogue of Satan" but also has the negation, "...but they are not".... So, I do not understand the protest of the Jewish chaplains, as recorded on page 121. By the way, the King James version was used to force the Irish to learn English and to stop using Irish Gaelic.
This book mentions personal reminisces of the "GI Jews", but there are really not many explicit combat experiences as so many recent World War II accounts have. Becoming supersensitive, I began to enumerate how many times the author has the "Irish" protrayed as the offending or involved ethnic group. On page 67, "...a bunch of Irish kids" beat up on Minkow. Prior to the war, the only Irish he had seen were "...Irish conductors on the 167 street trolley". On page 185, POWs were picking on a Jewish POW until ".. a big Irish guy" intervened. That is enough for now. What about the other ethnic groups? Recall that we were fighting not only Germans, but also Italians.
Finally, I wish that the author had spent more time on the Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.), especially the unit at CCNY. The Army Specialized Training Program (A.S.T.P.), was mentioned, ever so briefly, in passing on pages 40, 80, 87 and 125, as just some examples. Just to correct one mistake, the "USS Hornet" , CV-8 or CV-12, was an aircraft carrier, not a battleship as Dr. Moore states.
Being a Jewish GI during WWII.......2007-05-13
The author captures the full flavor of antsemitism in the Armed Forces during the war and for the Jews who served during the war years is especially meaningful. These men readily identify with the subtle and not so subtle communication of discrimination and the consequence of institutionalized antisemitism.
A superb telling of the Jewish GIs' story in World War II.......2005-01-18
Deborah Dash Moore's GI Jews is a moving book which provides insight into the Jewish American experience in World War II. Following the tales of more than fifteen Jewish GIs from before the United States' involvement in World War II through their return home, Moore paints a picture of what it was like to be a Jewish American and a Jewish American soldier in World War II.
Focusing primarily on the European Theater where American Jews were fighting not just for their country but also for the fate of European Jews, Moore discusses how Jewish GIs dealt with their Jewishness and integrated their religion into their identity as a soldier. Moore begins by describing how American Jews who would later fight in the war reacted to the outbreak of war in Europe. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Nazi domination of the European continent forced many of these men to reevaluate their philosophies and fight in support of FDR's four essential freedoms.
But before these men could engage the true enemy, they had to battle anti-semitism while trying to enlist in the United States' armed forces and also later on when confronting the prejudices of their fellow soldiers who believed Jews were cowards, sloths, poor soldiers and poor leaders. These Jewish GIs would go on to prove themselves in battle, but first they would be forced to fight for their comrades' respect as soldiers.
Along the way, Jewish GIs would also come face to face with Nazi persecution and slaughter of Europe's Jews, and Moore spends some time describing the ways Jewish GIs reacted to what they saw of the Holocaust. Several of the men were Zionists before the war, but Moore describes how witnessing the effect of the Holocaust first hand made many Jewish Gis ardent Zionists.
This book is simply a superb and well-written account of the Jewish GI experience. As such, it provides a much needed and unique perspective on World War II.

Book Description
This book, which gathers in one place the theories of 10 leading cognitive and functional linguists, represents a new approach that may define the next era in the history of psychology: It promises to give psychologists a new appreciation of what this variety of linguistics can offer their study of language and communication. In addition, it provides cognitive-functional linguists new models for presenting their work to audiences outside the boundaries of traditional linguistics. Thus, it serves as an excellent text for courses in psycholinguistics, and appeal to students and researchers in cognitive science and functional linguistics. br

Amazon doesn't have editorial desdescription on this book, so I'll quote the publisher's blurb:
"From the point of view of psychology and cognitive science, much of modern linguistics is too formal and mathematical to be of much use. The newly emerging approaches to language termed "Functional and Cognitive Linguistics," however, are much less formally oriented. Instead, functional and cognitive approaches to language structure are typically couched in terms already familiar to cognitive scientists: perception, attention, conceptualization, meaning, symbols, categories, schemas, perspectives, discourse context, social interaction, and communicative goals.
The account of human linguistic competence emerging from this new paradigm should be extremely useful to scientists studying how human beings (not formal devices) comprehend, produce, and acquire natural languages. The current volume brings together 10 of the most important linguists in cognitive and functional linguistics whose work is often not easily available to those outside the field. In original contributions, each of these scholars focus on an important aspect of human linguistic competence, with a special eye to readers who are not professional linguists. Of special importance to all of the contributions are the cognitive and social interactional processes that constitute human linguistic communication. The book should be of special interest to psychologists, cognitive scientists, psycholinguists, and developmental psycholinguists, in addition to linguists taking a more psychological approach to language."

Not bad for america.......1998-09-27
Good source for help in working with older properties, although a bit too flip. Generally European sources are more informed than USA but this gives good references and sources which is what most private individuals need. It is less usefull for professionals such as architects & designers. Even here because architectural and design education in the states is more geared towards large scale developement and not so much to restoration / renovation this reference is usefull. Good for usa names and sources, but suggest that european references etc. are better in terms of specific details and construction.

Book Description
This book represents the most comprehensive compilation of data on threatened vascular plants ever published. It includes the names of some 33,000 plant species determined to be rare or threatened on a global scale. Conservation assessments were provided by the IUCN Species Survival Commission, the National Botanical Institute (South Africa), Environment Australia, and CSIRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, together with hundreds of botanic gardens and botanists throughout the world. The Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh and the New York Botanical Garden have made major in-kind contributions. The result of 20 years work by botanists and conservationists around the world, it is intended as a conservation tool, a provider of baseline information to measure conservation progress and as a primary source of data on plant species. Most importantly, however, it provides the building blocks on which to base a worldwide effort to conserve plant species.
