How do you put language at the center of a novel? Make the protagonist a linguist, and give everyone telling names and portentous things to say. That is what David Carkeet--himself a linguist by training--does in his novels. Jeremy Cook, the successful academic linguist and hero of Carkeet's earlier Double Negative and The Full Catastrophe, returns in The Error of Our Ways. Now married and unemployed, the previously cocksure Cook follows his ambitious wife, a linguist as well--though one with a teaching position--to a tiny college in St. Louis. There Cook meets Ben Hudnut, the nut magnate of St. Louis, whose own manhood is jeopardized by failure in the nut business. The novel is a clever tale of middle-aged male insecurity and the damning consequences of fate. The joy of it all resides in Carkeet's prose and the witty wordings he designs.

                        Book Description

Combining elements of domestic comedy with the linguistic insights of his favorite protagonist, Jeremy Cook, Carkeet has created another modern parable that delineates the fault lines existing between the sexes and running through the textures of language itself.

                        Customer Reviews:

                        4 out of 5 stars The final (?) volume of a trilogy.......2006-12-14

This book, featuring the adventures of the linguist Jeremy Cook, finds him in a situation similar to that of the previous novel, "The Full Catastrophe," (1990). His is, unofficially, this time, studying the language development of a child, and helping to stabilize the family's domestic situation. It is not necessary to have read the previous two books ("Double Negative," a mystery, was the first), but as I mentioned in my review of "Catastrophe," it is always enjoyable to know something of the background of the central character, and as was the case with "Catastrophe," threads of the story line are carried from each of the preceding novels. This book ends badly for Jeremy and the reader can only hope that Carkeet will someday produce a "Reichenbach Falls" plot twist so that the series may be continued.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be Afraid of the Linguist!.......2004-02-04

I picked up a copy of this book at our library, actually because I liked the cover (sad but true!). I'd never read or heard of David Carkeet, who is a linguist and author of two other works. Reading reviews of his novels, one might be dismissive because of the "highbrow" linguistic tones they take. This book is actually a delight even if you don't care about his use of language and the effects it may have on the plot itself.
The reason I enjoyed this book was really two fold. First, it was great to read something about domestic life from a male protagonist point of view that was actually written by a male. Secondly, the plot itself is just full of wonderful little ironies and threads that weave themselves together beautifully at the end. While some passages are a bit stuffy and seem "full of words" (that lingustics thing again, I guess) for the most part I absolutely loved everything about the story. I am definately going to read his other two works now.

                        1 out of 5 stars Pardon me;but I disagree...........2003-11-14

I picked this book up on the strength of the remarks on the back cover. I enjoy off-the-wall humor and especially word play, puns and interesting characters. Before I started to read the book,I glanced at the Customer Reviews and was really anxious to get at it,expecting a great read by a highly touted author, who was new to me.
Man,what a disappointment.I plodded through to page 137 and gave up.All we got was a bunch of uninteresting losers going aimlessly about their mundane lives. There was nothing about any character that made you want to read more.As for humor;a little 3-year old spouting foul language hardly qualifies. This may seem humorous to linguists, but I can't imagine it would tickle too many funny bones.Once again,I thought I would skip to the last few pages,it didn't get any better. At that point ,I was glad I quit when I did.
So, why did others think the book so good? I have no idea.I returned to the Customer Reviews, intending to check out a few (see more about me)'s and Lo! and Behold,of the 6 reviewers ,there were none. I asked myself, who I knew might enjoy this book, but couldn't think of anyone. Then a light flashed!I checked to see who published the book.Oh! Oh! there it was "Work on this novel was supported by a Fellowship from the University of Missouri Wendon Spring Fund.".I usually check for this sort of thing first,as I rarely find books that get written and published using the crutch of a grant,to be very good.I guess these groupes who give these grants look down on the 'trash' that is put out by the authors and publishers who must earn their keep, and want produce their own for themselves.

5 out of 5 stars I Really Enjoy This Book.......1999-05-03

Carkeet was my History of the English Language professor two semesters ago, so I picked up this book out of curiosity when I saw it advertised on the UM-St. Louis English Department "Recent Faculty Publications" board. Am I glad I did. This book is very funny and very true to life. And the best part is that I can actually hear Carkeet's voice in there. Having taken one of his classes, I think, has given me a lot of insight into the book I might not have had otherwise, but I think that a lot of people can relate to this book, especially when it comes to the relationships between the characters.

                        5 out of 5 stars A great read........1998-06-15

This is a complex yet thorougly readable and hilarious book. A master of the spoken word, Carkeet makes every word count. His characters touched me deeply at many levels.

A Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and the author of 17 books, David Halberstam has a gift for bringing current events alive and putting them into historical perspective in an engaging way. In many respects, War in a Time of Peace serves as a sequel to his classic The Best and the Brightest in its examination of how the lessons of Vietnam have influenced American foreign policy in the post-Cold War era. Beginning with the Persian Gulf War, Halberstam discusses the political shift in emphasis from foreign to domestic issues that ushered in the first Clinton administration. Despite the fact that Clinton, along with much of the country, preferred to focus on the home front, the U.S. nonetheless found itself drawn into conflicts in Haiti, Somalia, and the Balkans--events that reflected American discomfort with the use of its military forces abroad while at the same time acknowledging that much of the world is dependent upon the U.S. for both guidance and support. The book also highlights the many nonpolitical factors that have influenced these political changes, including a generational shift in national leadership, the modern media's emphasis on entertainment over foreign news, a leap in military technology, and American economic prosperity that has rendered foreign policy largely irrelevant to many citizens.

Halberstam is a master at presenting well-rounded portraits and telling anecdotes of the personalities that have created U.S. policy, casting new light on well-known figures such as Clinton, Colin Powell, and George H.W. Bush, as well as supporting players such as Anthony Lake, Richard Holbrooke, James Baker, Madeleine Albright, General Wesley Clark, Al Gore, and many other influential American leaders of the past decade. Having covered many aspects of American history and foreign policy since the early 1960s, Halberstam is uniquely qualified to report on an era in which the U.S., and the world, has changed so dramatically. --Shawn Carkonen

                        Book Description

In this long awaited successor to his #1 national bestseller The Best and the Brightest, David Halberstam describes in fascinating human detail how the shadow of Cold War Vietnam still hangs over American foreign policy, and how domestic politics have determined our role as a world power.

Halberstam brilliantly evokes the internecine conflicts, the untrammeled egos, and the struggles for dominance among the key figures in the White House, the State department, and the military. He shows how the Vietnam war has shaped American politics and policy makers. Perhaps most notable is what happened under Clinton when, for the first time in fifty years, a president placed domestic issues over foreign policy.

With his uncanny ability to find the real story behind the headlines, Halberstam shows how current events in the Balkans and Somalia act as a fascinating mirror to American politics and foreign policy Sweeping in scope and impressive in its depth, War in a Time of Peace provides fascinating portraits of Clinton, Bush, Reagan, Kissinger, James Baker, Dick Cheney, Madeleine Albright, and others to reveal a stunning view of modern political America.

4 out of 5 stars A portrait of the 1990s from the viewpoint of the 1990s?.......2007-02-21

As I finished this book, I couldn't help think how out of date it feels. Although Halberstam mentions terrorist threats on the very last page of the book; the African embassy bombings, the USS Cole attack, the Khobar towers bombing, and President Clinton and Sandy Berger's chase after Al Queda appear nowhere. Honestly, most of the other large-scale foreign policy incidents of the 1990s (Somalia, Haiti, Iraq) take a back seat to the Bosnian and Kosovar conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. This book's subtitle could aptly be "The Vietman War and its impact on the American foreign policy response to the break-up of Yugoslavia."

Nevertheless, War in a Time of Peace is a very good read. Although it could be editted a little better (there are many repititive bits and some sloppy portions of narrative), Halberstam's familiar prose style keeps things moving. It is clear that many of the key players were interviewed and the book provides great insights on George HW Bush, Bill Clinton, Brent Scowcroft, Sandy Berger, Richard Holbrooke, James Baker, Colin Powell, Wesley Clark, and many other 1990s powerbrokers. Although not as good as The Best and the Brightest or The Fifties (an underrated Halberstam classic), I am glad that I read this book. If you want to learn more about some of the tough decisions of the Clinton presidency, which ostensibly started as the domestic policy presidency, and the way we looked at security threats (and politcal threats) in the 1990s, this is a very good book. Too bad the events of 2001 to 2003 have changed the world completely and we can never go back to the safer (and simpler) 1990s.

5 out of 5 stars Halberstam does it again.......2007-01-04

David Halberstam delivers another masterpiece in his book on how the Balkan crisis came about. This book is very fair condemning Bush Sr, Clinotn and all of the generals including Colin Powell for their actions in this area. The United States dropped the ball in stabilizing this region leaving it to the European Union to debate about. Our unwillingness to commit troops has led to more than a decade of crisis and halberstam delivers the story in great detail. Highly recommend if you are just starting to learn about the crisis as it is a very fair and well written account.

                        4 out of 5 stars Wars abound.......2006-07-02

The end of the Cold War at the beginning of the 1990s seemed to usher in a new era of hope, promise, and peace. This book shows that the last expectation was wholly false. The 1990s saw more American military interventions into other countries than any other decade of American history. Haiti, Iraq, Mogadishu, Kosovo and Croatia are some of the numerous battlefronts on which American troops were sent to serve. This book chronicles this decade, and shows how the US was inexplicably drawn into each of these conflicts one by one. Key throughout most of these episodes was a Clinton administration that was reluctant to go to arms. This book shows how many times it was pressure from the media, Congress, or the opposing party (Republicans) that convinced the Clinton administration that force was necessary. In a way, this book resembles Halberstam's classic on the Vietnam War; the Best and the Brightest. In both cases, a reluctant president was slowly but steadily cornered into committing troops. This book highlights the major characters involved in the military excursion of the 1990s; Colin Powell, Tony Lake, Al Gore, Richard Holbrooke, Madeleine Albright, various UN officials and government officials of other countries.

All in all a great book. This should be required reading for any course on modern American history, or modern world history. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars cogent, critical analysis of Presidents and their foreign policies.......2006-06-22

This analysis of policies of George H.W. Bush and William J. (Bill) Clinton offers a cogent, critical, where necessary, analysis of these Presidents and their foreign policies. It also offers an analysis of the shortcomings of both men, in domestic, as well as foreign relations. It shows the strengths and weaknesses of Bush and Clinton.
Bush, the economy, which may have cost him the election. Clinton, foreign policy and a military diminished by cuts, to promote the domestic agenda, which, some might feel made us more vulnerable. It's well read and gives a fairly detailed analysis in a short space of time [refers to abridged audio cassette]. Worth listening to, and makes me wonder if Mr. Halberstam would write an analysis of the current Bush's policies [or perhaps, lack of policies, save to tick off (to put it politely) those who'd seek America's downfall, e.g., radical Islamists, North Korea, Iran, and others, what he'd make of it. Let's hope he does.

4 out of 5 stars Infomative and Engaging.......2006-03-20

A solid explanation of what happened in the Balkan's vis-à-vis US foreign policy. When reading books on recent history or current events I try to take into account the author's political bias and maintain vigilance for hidden agendas. Mr. Hablerstam's book appears to be an even-handed treatment of the subject. Like many Americans, I struggled for understanding of the events in media accounts of the conflict. This book was written in an easily understandable and engaging style. It offers about as thorough an understanding of the Balkan crisis that can be accomplished in a single volume. I highly recommend this book.

                              Book Description

This is the first comprehensive study of the history of Asia Minor in antiquity to be written for nearly fifty years and the first attempt to treat Anatolian history as a whole over the millennium from the time of Alexander the Great to tbe hey-day of the Byzantine Empire. This second volume examines the rise of Christianity: Anatolian religious beliefs and practices provides fertile ground where both Jewish and Christian communities set down early roots; by the mid third century AD much of Anatolia was Christian, and Christian beliefs and practices shaped Anatolian history in Late Antiquity as decisively as the conditions of imperial rule had done in the high Roman Empire. Two relationships dominated every aspect of Asia Minor's history: that of the people to the land, and that of men to the gods. An enormous quantity of information derived from written sources, archaeological remains, inscriptions and coins make it possible to explore these relationships at a level of detail which is hardly possible for anyother part of the ancient world. Both themes have a significance which reached far beyond the boundaries of Anatolia.

5 out of 5 stars History brought to life........2001-09-25

This title, in two volumes, covers the vast sweep of Asia Minor's history, from Alexander to the height of the Byzantine Empire. The first volume concentrates on two major periods; the early part of the 3rd century BC when Celtic tribes settled throughout the interior, and the coming of the Romans and their colonisation of the eastern flank of their empire. Mr Mitchell has crafted an enormously readable history of the region. The detail is extraordinary but the prose never becomes turgid or obtuse. By examining the intertwined complexities of people's relations to the land and their Gods, Mr Mitchell has broken new ground and produced a book that is that most unusual of beasts, both readable and scholarly.

In this classic of ethnology, a noted scholar traces the origins, history, and influence of the Celts on Indo-European peoples. Beginning with the earliest archaeological and linguistic evidence, he tracks the migration of Celts into Europe and as far west as the British Isles. An exceptionally thorough treatment of Celtic languages shows how their relationship to other tongues reveals information about Celtic origins and migrations. In addition, archaeological evidence--weapons, armor, pottery, and decorative ornament--from a variety of cultures is reviewed (particularly artifacts from Switzerland's Iron Age settlement of La Tène), and the expansion of the Celts in the British Isles and abroad during the Bronze Age and the Hallstatt Period is explored. Unabridged reprint of the classic 1934 edition. 141 line illustrations. 4 halftones. 12 maps.

Many of the early, pioneering expert systems were devoted to aspects of medical diagnosis, and diagnostic problems (not only in medicine but also in other domains, such as electronic circuit design) still continue to attract a great deal of attention from researchers and systems developers. To date, however, the designers of diagnostic systems have generally been content to incorporate all the requisite knowledge within a single, homogenous structure and to opt for a single mode of reasoning.

In this book the authors describe in detail the design and development of the CHECK project at the University of Turin which was undertaken in order to show that it is possible to combine different kinds of knowledge structure and different modes of reasoning within a single system. Indeed, the authors argue, diagnostic problems are, in general, so complex that only a system in which these different kinds of knowledge and different levels of reasoning interact can hope to reproduce the complexity and subtlety of the human expert's thought processes. The book demonstrates that the authors' innovative approach has many advantages, and the detailed description of their system will allow other researchers, working in a whole range of different domains, to build upon their pioneering work.

"How Weather Works" is a helpful primer on the fundamentals of weather--particularly how the interrelationship of the sun, Earth, and atmosphere and the changes in pressure, temperature, and moisture create our weather. It also describes the inner workings of fronts and storms, including hurricanes, blizzards, and tornadoes.

"Weather" explains the seven climate zones and explores the causes of climate changes, from the angle of the earth's orbit to volcanic eruptions and the greenhouse effect.

"The Wonder of Weather" explains how to analyze and forecast weather, reviews the basic equipment needed and how to use it, and provides a complete guide to clouds and optic phenomena, such as rainbows and the aurora borealis.

Weather is sure to delight, teach, and entertain weather watchers and reveal our wondrous world as never before.
