While this book does have some good information embedded in it, the writing style is poor and hard to follow. The flow of topics is also somewhat arbitrary. I was expecting better.

Great Book, but Worth $...?.......2003-01-01

This book was very helpful to learn updated statistical methods to analyze microarray data, but I wanted a little more of thorough explanation and algorithm details for each method. I felt this was a bit too expensive for the content. I would not recommend to people who do not have basic understanding of a variety of clustering and classification techniques.

Parker Grey stars in her own show. she's a twenty-something in New York. has immense crush on a TV star who frequents the bar she works in. has neurotic room-mate with an Elvis complex. Parker is also a Juilliard drop-out. she has stopped doing the one thing that she was ever passionate about because she just doesn't feel like it. she tries to "find" herself, and vents out her feelings and frustrations on her apartment walls. there's also a whole side-story full of suspense! and thrill! when her room-mate gets kidnapped and it's up to Parker to rescue her.

you will love Parker Grey. you will connect with her, and see her neurosis reflected in yourself. and at the end of the book, when Parker realises that the one thing that she thought she'd lost was staring her right in the face all the while, you'll wish you were her. as i did.

Keep going...It was worth it.......2005-01-22

At first (3 chapters or so) i highly disliked Parker. I'm afraid whiny, stealing, chain-smokers are not my favorite heroines. But I kept reading...just to give the book a chance to develop...and found myself hooked. Unusually, the cute & fluffy ending was surprisingly satisfying, so I bumped my rating up to a 5 star. (Although the bus chase was rather weird.)

BTW, I loved the colorform wall and chandelier idea.

This author is off to a good start. I'll watch for future books.

All I have to say is that Parker Grey may have single-handedly saved the chick lit genre from total ruin. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm tired of reading about main characters obsessed with designer clothes and shoes. I like that the main character is working class and that she has an obsessive love of TV, and that the author has managed to craft a character with so many faults that actually make her endearing. In the wrong hands, it would have just gone all wrong, but I really look forward to Kristen Buckley's future work. I hope she has another novel in the works. I only took one star off because I wish the book could have gone a little longer.

A refreshing entry to Chic Lit.......2004-01-16

Finally a book that isn't cookie cutter Chic Lit. Don't get me wrong, when I discovered the genre, I bought every book I could get my hands on. My book shelves are brimming over... Some are keepers and the others...well, I wish I could get my money back.

I decided to give Chic Lit another try and The Parker Grey Show was a pleasant suprise. Yes, she is a woman recovering from a bad relationship, but there is so much more. This book is more philosophical and has a deeper message. I personally connected with Parker's frustration regarding the direction of her life. Her words also allowed me to envision the colorful mural created in the loft. If my walls were bare, I might try something similar!

It was nice not read a predictable ending... I borrowed the book from the library, but I'm definitely going to buy a copy to add to my collection.

My recommendations for enjoyable Chic Lit authors are:
Marian Keyes, Wendy Holden, Jane Green (Jemima J is the best), Adele Lang, Sophie Kinsella (Just the first two in the series) and of course Helen Fielding. If you want something different, I have also ventured into mystery. One funny series about an "Erin Brockovich" type of slueth is Sarah Strothmeyer's "Bubbles" series.

A deeper message wrapped in a fun package of girly fun. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had all the elements of chick-lit that I like but what really kept me hooked was the hidden messages and philosophical statements that we all relate to regarding self-knowledge and self-acceptance.

Dated, but yet to be surpassed.......2005-07-13

Although this history of fencing is over a century old, and some of its conclusions are deeply flawed, it is still the most complete and accurate book on the subject. Castle's dismissal of early works on swordsmanship as "The rough untutored fighting of the Middle Ages" is unfortunate. I defy anyone to examine Sigmund Ringeck's Fechtbuch (as translated and interpreted by Christian Tobler in Secrets of German Medieval Swordsmanship) or the anonymous Manuscript I.33 from 1300 (translated by Jeff Forgeng in The Medieval Art of Swordsmanship and analysed by myself and Paul Wagner in Medieval Sword and Shield)and conclude that medieval fencing lacked system and sophistication.

Also unfortunate is Castle's evident belief that the history of fencing is a process of steady improvement to the perfection of fencing in his day. It was a good thing for Castle and his contemporaries that they never had to face the trained killers of the middle ages and see their "rough untutored" fighting for themselves.

But, quaint 19th century notions of superiority aside, in his description of the fencing masters of the 16th-18th centuries, Castle is unsurpassed. He possessed the rare ability to separate observation from opinion. So, while his opinions may be...interesting, his observations, unsullied by opinion are for the most part accurate. He examined about a hundred different fencing masters and their systems in analyses that are sometimes deep and sometimes quite superficial.

Other authors have attempted to write histories of fencing, but none have managed to separate their observations of the old masters from their personal opinions. Hence none are as useful as Castle. As old and as dated as this work is, it still deserves a place on the shelf of anyone interested in the history of swordsmanship.

This book is a must for all fencers. It is a font of fencing knowledge, and although much criticized by members of the modern historical fencing movement, it is nevertheless a valuable resource.

As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing," "The Inner Game of Fencing," and "The Encyclopedia of the Sword," and the editor/publisher of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE, I recommend this book highly.

Flawed; but a classic none the less..........2003-07-25

This is a very readable and enjoyable history of the evolution of the various "schools"(or philosophies)of self defence with the sword, expressed with a detailed look at their main proponents, the salon masters of years ago.

Castle's personal sketches of the masters are enlightening and full of anecdotal material. The accompanying illustrations are mostly reproductions of period wookcuts which are invaluable in themselves.

However, the poorly reproduced photographic addenda reveal that Castle was as much as a century off in his ability to identify and date sword types. This of course was not the purpose of his work.

Even given this small flaw, I wholeheartedly recommend this for the fencer or martial artist of any level who is interested in the roots of the art. We are fortunate that Mr Castle provided us with such a good, solid history.

If you can find a copy of this book -- reprinted or otherwise -- buy it. It's the grand daddy of fencing histories. It contains a wealth of information covering fencing's long and bloody development from the fifteenth century to the nineteenth (when the book was written). Most fencing reference works quote THE SCHOOLS AND MASTERS OF FENCE liberally. It is one of my favorite books

Interventions into Modernist Cultures is a comparative analysis of the cultural politics of modernist writing in the United States and Taiwan. Amie Elizabeth Parry argues that the two sites of modernism are linked by their representation or suppression of histories of U.S. imperialist expansion, Cold War neocolonial military presence, and economic influence in Asia. Focusing on poetry, a genre often overlooked in postcolonial theory, she contends that the radically fragmented form of modernist poetic texts is particularly well suited to representing U.S. imperialism and neocolonial modernities.

Reading various works by U.S. expatriates Ezra Pound and Gertrude Stein, Parry compares the cultural politics of U.S. canonical modernism with alternative representations of temporality, hybridity, erasure, and sexuality in the work of the Taiwanese writers Yü Kwang-chung and Hsia Yü and the Asian American immigrant author Theresa Hak Kyung Cha. Juxtaposing poems by Pound and Yü Kwang-chung, Parry shows how Yü’s fragmented, ambivalent modernist form reveals the effects of neocolonialism while Pound denies and obscures U.S. imperialism in Asia, asserting a form of nondevelopmental universalism through both form and theme. Stein appropriates discourses of American modernity and identity to represent nonnormative desire and sexuality, and Parry contrasts this tendency with representations of sexuality in the contemporary experimental poetry of Hsia Yü. Finally, Parry highlights the different uses of modernist forms by Pound in his Cantos—which incorporate a multiplicity of decontextualized and ahistorical voices—and by Cha in her 1982 novel Dictee, a historicized, multilingual work. Parry’s sophisticated readings provide a useful critical framework for apprehending how “minor modernisms” illuminate the histories erased by certain canonical modernist texts.

Richard Caulfield is my Dad, so I guess that makes me a little prejudiced, But I think this book is great. It's very academic, so don't get it for light reading, but it contains lots of interesting information. All the information is completely factual, and pretty interesting. Whales inspire great fascination in the public culture of industrialized nations. Images of majestic and mysterious creatures of the sea, hunted to or nearly to tragic extinction in a emblematic example of human excess, have fueled the economic and cultural power of this century's global movement to end whale hunting. However, this political movement, and the ecological research it initiated, has largely ignored the experience of Native circumpolar communities, whose vast knowledge of whales and whaling has evolved through centuries of integrated cultural and economic practices rooted in the ethics of subsistence consumption and sustainability. Today, the Inuit find themselves struggling with international management regimes which, while they have been successful in curbing the destruction of large-scale, commercial whaling enterprises, have imposed policies that are insensitive to the needs and traditions of Native subsistence hunters. "Inuit, Whaling, and Sustainability" is based on extensive ethnographic, ecological, and policy research sponsored by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference, and presents Inuit perspectives on the integral role whales play in cultural, economic, philosophical, and nutritional aspects of Inuit life. This book is also the first major publication to engage in policy analysis, and formulate modes of environmental research, grounded in Inuit voices and realities. Topical ethnography at its best.......2000-07-11

I stumbled across this book while researching the Makah Whaling controversy. It has one page on the Makah and whaling, offering comparative perspectives on a story set further north. While the Makah are trying to revive a tradition of whaling that ceased more than sixty years ago, Inuit peoples across the Arctic are struggling to maintain their way of life. The hurdles they must overcome to continue on their way include a declining resource base that results from an extraction-based economy, and the environmentalist opponents of these extractive industries who want to "save the whales". This book is the story of the Inuit and whaling told in their words. The authors include an international interdisciplinary team brought together by the Inuit Circumpolar Conference.

This book is ground-breaking ethnography that is put together by the people it is about. It is presented for the purpose of opening dialogue with those in far away places whose political priorities have consequences for Inuit peoples. It is a story of a region that spans three continents, and which is of growing importance to those of us who live in the south. No one interested in economic development of natural resources, whatever the point of view, can afford to ignore this book.
