Financial Accounting Integrated: A Business Process Approach with Integrated Debits and Credits and Pier 1 Package
Jane L. Reimers Manufacturer: Prentice Hall ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0131049127 |
Book Description
Financial Accounting: A Business Process Approach attempts to bridge the gap between business and accounting. It starts out by setting the stage with a description of what a business is all about. This provides a framework in which readers can see how accounting relates to and reports on business activities. This book shows how accounting fits into business as a company is created, operated, and expanded. The traditional financial statements and the accounting equation are emphasized, but how accounting relates to business processes is at the core. This version of Reimers introduces debits and credits in Chapter 4 and then contains integrated treatment of debits and credits in all subsequent chapters. It covers merchandising and inventory; integrates statement of cash flows, business risks, and internal controls; emphasizes financial statements; and integrates Excel into every chapter. For financial statement users and preparers.

Transatlantic Regulatory Co-operation: Legal Problems and Political Prospects
Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0198298927 |
Book Description
International regulatory relations have commonly been viewed through the prism of international organizations, on the one hand, and international trade disputes, on the other. However, neither of these perspectives offers an adequate understanding of the ways in which international regulatory relations are managed or may be managed more effectively. While the one risks overstating the readiness of states to cede regulatory authority to international institutions, the other risks ignoring the reality of and prospects for cooperative behavior. Transatlantic regulatory cooperation comprises a highly differentiated "bundle" of techniques for reconciling the needs of international trade with the diversity of national regulatory environments and public demands. The processes involved are still poorly understood, due partly to the fact that they have been very largely improvisational, with the result that the framework of regulatory cooperation is still very much a work in progress. Moreover, the main protagonists in this arena -- the US and EU -- have their own well-established domestic regulatory processes with which international initiatives may not readily be integrated, either in terms of values or institutions. While focusing on illustrative sectoral examples of transatlantic regulatory cooperation, this book thus also explores the more general challenge of accommodating regulatory cooperation with domestic legal and political institutions. The volume closes both by calling attention to inescapable legitimacy questions (e.g. reconciliation with principles of democracy and demands for public accountability) and by exploring certain strategic directions and institutional implications for the future.

Between Grass And Sky: Where I Live And Work (Environmental Arts and Humanities)
Linda M. Hasselstrom Manufacturer: University of Nevada Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0874176271 |
Book Description
An important collection of personal essays from one of the most widely published American environmental writers addresses current concerns about the effects of ranching on the environment.Acclaimed nature writer Linda M. Hasselstrom sees herself as a rancher who writes - a self-definition that shapes the tone and content of her writing. Now owner of the cattle ranch where she grew up in western South Dakota, she lives in daily intimate contact with the natural world. As she says, "Nature is to me both home and office. Nature is my boss, manager of the branch office-or ranch office-where I toil to convert native grass into meat. . . .If I want to keep my job as well as my home, I pay attention not only to Nature's orders, but to her moods and whims." The essays in this book reflect Hasselstrom's close attention to her homeplace and the depth of her sympathy with the world around her. She writes knowingly of the rancher's toil and of the intelligence and dignity of the animals she tends, especially the much-maligned cow, as well as of the wild creatures - the owls and antelope and coyotes and others - that share the prairie grassland she calls home. Hasselstrom! 's voice rings with the ardent common sense of one who knows and loves the land, who appreciates the concerns of environmental activists but also knows the role that responsible ranchers can play in nurturing a healthy rural ecosystem.
This book is by no means an apologia for ranching but rather a lively picture of a specific part of the world, a world of which Hasselstrom writes with candor, love, and the clear sight of one who knows it well. The essays are rich in closely observed details of the natural world, in humor and pathos and wry commentary on the scope of human folly and the even vaster potential of humans for community and empathy. "Only people who live in the country," she writes, "could form a relationship with nature so intimate that they feel concern for one lonely duck. People who live in cities . . . only glimpse nature from high windows or speeding vehicles. Even wilderness lovers who probe deeply are only passing through. We who live on the land truly live within the land, each of our lives only one among the other inhabitants of the place." These are essays to read with wonder and delight, to relish and ponder.

The Chemistry of Phosphate and Nitrogen Compounds in Sediments
Han L. Golterman Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1402019513 |
Book Description
This book deals with the processes constituting the cycles of the phosphate and nitrogen compounds in sediment and the phosphate equilibria between the sediment and the overlying water. Sediment, to a large extent, controls the P- and N concentrations and thus primary production. In most waters, too high concentrations of these compounds cause excessive growth of algae, causing so-called eutrophication. Abatement of this can only be achieved after a complete understanding of the quantitative role of sediment in the P- and N cycle.
Thus, for the phosphate cycle the following processes are evaluated:
-P-binding onto sediments, viz., onto iron hydroxide and calcium carbonate (limestone), -Fractionation of phosphate in relation to its bioavailability,
-Release processes under anoxic and oxic conditions, and their dependence on pH changes,
-Further items taken into account, including the influence of drying of sediment and its resuspension by wind. For the nitrogen cycle, the following are discussed:
-Ammonification of organically bound nitrogen,
-Nitrification and denitrification, including Dissimilatory Nitrate Reduction,
-Links with other chemical elements are made.

Electron Scattering and Related Spectroscopies
M. De Crescenzi , and M. N. Piancastelli Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9810223005 |
Book Description
The main purpose of this book is to provide an overview of all phenomena which can be categorized under the general label of "electron scattering", and to give a comprehensive description of all spectroscopical techniques related to electron scattering phenomena. Various classes of events are examined (electron in-electron out, photon in-electron out, electron in-two electron out, electron diffraction), together with the corresponding experimental techniques. A description of the underlying physics of various electron scattering phenomena is provided. For each spectroscopy, the general principles, the main fields of application, and some selected representative cases are discussed. The use of relatively low-cost electron sources is emphasized with respect to photon sources. The book is directed to PhD students and researchers not necessarily yet expert in the field.

The section on samurai personalities would be an extremely useful source if it weren't so brief. The information on each individual is often so short as to omit critically important facts.
The section on battles and sieges is also a useful section as an overview.
NOTE: The dates given for events are only accurate to the year as Turnbull has translated lunar calendar dates directly over. The 13th day of the fourth month of the year 1592 (May 24th) becomes "13 April 1592". Keep this in mind if you reference these dates against other works.

Scientific Blunders: A Brief History of How Wrong Scientists Can Sometimes Be...

Customer Reviews:
A must for every Science Major.......2004-08-15
The definition of the key concept missing.......2004-05-07
In my opinion, the following statement should be pretty obvious: when deciding if something is science or not, one is making value judgement based on a certain conception of science. So, in the introductory chapter I would have excepted to find a definition of science, but couldn't find one. When my reading progressed, I was constantly waiting for the aforementioned definition - but still couldn't find it.
At certain point of my reading, it became clear to me, that the writer is not trying to convince the reader with logically and conceptually sound and coherent proof, but with rhetorics and assertions based on an implicit, narrow and (propably) philosphically poorly justified conception of science. For that reason the word "science" started to look like a magical word, which is somehow mysteriously expected to explain itself. But, it is pointless to continue on this track.
To summarize: the aim of the book is ambitious, but the attempt falls dolefully short. If I had a second chance, I would buy some other book and not waste my money to this... well, rubbish.
A journey through science.......2002-08-29
The common thread through all these chapters -being how wrong things can get- gives the reader an interesting view on what scientific prove actually means. All scientists are humans (we hope...) and this gives rise to emotional arguments popping up from time to time. What happens when you mix these with experimental research has been illustrated in abundance: carelessness, wrong-headedness, arrogance, moral fear or plain bad luck. Fair, not all 'blunders' are worthy of this tag, quite a lot are just as can be expected from a normal struggle for the truth. But still, science would have been far more advanced if these human influences could have been avoided. But isn't this a utopia?
Although the title might suggest some humorous content, it certainly does not deliver on these expectations. The tongue-in-cheek approach makes the topics quite more readable, but does not reduce the explanations to kindergarten gibberish. It is true that a few facts are plainly wrong, but the main message of the book doesn't suffer from this.
To conclude: it's a nice book intended for a general public and easy to read (I read it on a plane). It lets you browse through popular science in a relaxed manner. Hopefully this will encourage people to dive deeper into the topics they find interesting. But be aware: people who think of science as a sacred institution might get offended by this book.
