Book Description
The huge economic and social impact of high-tech industries on the fortunes of nation states has been widely recognised in recent years. Therefore, government policies encouraging the creation of new technology-based firms have become a priority in virtually all advanced economies. One factor underpinning the performance and growth of high-tech start-ups is presumably international activity of such firms. This study addresses the issues concerning the critical decision to internationalise. The findings confirm the extent and importance of internationalisation to young high-tech firms in the UK and Germany. Thus, if governments or venture capitalists are interested in the promotion of successful new technology-based firms they must, per force, be also interested in encouraging the processes of internationalisation.

Celebrating a rite of passage for many into adult life, this hilarious book offers tongue-in-cheek observations on making life choices for recent college graduates, their friends and families, and anyone who faces the bewildering question What do I want to do with my life? The father-son writing team offers comical commentary and surprisingly realistic advice on getting a job, choosing a career path, making decisions about living at home or in an apartment, and, above all, crafting an impressive personal update for the alumni magazine. Suggestions address common transitional challenges such as faking a go-getter attitude and determining who will really give a good letter of recommendation.

Hysterical.......2005-02-17
This is the perfect graduation gift for your nephew or cousin or whatever. Great reading on the can, too. Lots of chuckles.
The Dog Ate My Resumé: Survival Tips for Life after College.......2004-11-16
The Dog Ate My Resumé is hilarious spoof on life after college. The book sarcastically answers questions and provides satirical tips on majors, graduation, career options, job interviews, graduate school, and living arrangements. The book contains such chapters as Winning Interview Techniques: Developing a Go-Getter Attitude, or at Least Faking One and Navigating and Guiding Your Family Discussions About What You Will Do After College, Including Good Answers to the Big Question- Truthful and Otherwise. All of these chapters are witty. A few of these chapters even provide useful tips, between the lines and beyond the sarcasm.
The Dog Ate my Resumé is aimed at new college graduates and their parents. No doubt those who are still in college and those who have gone through the process will think this book is extremely funny, the former not fully understanding the hidden truths in this book and the latter having survived the out of school crisis. It is important to emphasize that this book is a spoof, meant to lighten the heaviness of graduating, finding yourself, and getting a real job.
This is no dog!.......2004-04-28
Great reading on the unemployment line! Your caseworker will think you're sincere, and you won't have entirely wasted your time looking for a job you know isn't out there anyway--it's moved to Bangladesh! But seriously, this book is anything but. It's a howl from first to last and if you take its advice, you may not survive for long after college, but you'll have a great time while it lasts.
Book Description
In the tradition of the best-selling Rape of Nanking, a provocative examination of Japanese atrocities during World War II. "Another stunning slice of history from Laurence Rees." (Daily Telegraph) The question is as searing as it is fundamental to the continuing debate over Japanese culpability in World War II and the period leading up to it: "How could Japanese soldiers have committed such acts of violence against Allied prisoners of war and Chinese civilians?" During the First World War, the Japanese fought on the side of the Allies and treated German POWs with respect and civility. In the years that followed, under Emperor Hirohito, conformity was the norm and the Japanese psyche became one of selfless devotion to country and emperor; soon Japanese soldiers were to engage in mass murder, rape, and even cannibalization of their enemies. Horror in the East examines how this drastic change came about. On the basis of never-before-published interviews with both the victimizers and the victimized, and drawing on never-before-revealed or long-ignored archival records, Rees discloses the full horror of the war in the Pacific, probing the supposed Japanese belief in their own racial superiority, analyzing a military that believed suicide to be more honorable than surrender, and providing what the Guardian calls "a powerful, harrowing account of appalling inhumanity...impeccably researched."

Horror in the East.......2006-06-27
This book was written as a companion to a BBC TV program. Rees does an excellent job of laying out why Japanese behaviour toward POW's changed after World War I and why the Japanese were capable of the atrocities they perpetrated in World War II. Rees' thesis is that given the right set of circumstances anyone could commit war crimes. He contrasts the Japanese actions with those of US troops fighting in the Pacific. Although he clearly differentiates between the scale of the activity of the Americans compared to the Japanese - clearly war crimes were committed by US troops.
Rees also takes aim at Hirohito and presents his case that the Japanese emperor was not the distant, aloof figure some would want to portray. Instead he knew what was going on. Rees clearly makes this case in the actions of Hirohito and the "Rape of Nanking." Hirohito knew what was happening and yet he did nothing to stop it or to punish wrongdoers.
I have one small issue with Rees' book! It was written in support of a TV documentary shown on BBC in the U.K - nowhere in his book does he document any examples of crimes committed by British servicemen - he finds it easier to cite examples of US wrongdoing as counterpoint to the Japanese atrocities. Did he do this so as not to offend his home audience?
Japanese terrorism in World War II........2004-04-18
Rees explains the deviant behavior that arose in Japan after the first wars of the 20th Century (Russo-Japanese War, WWI). In those conflicts, Japan immitated the Western Allies in their treatment of captured territories and POWs. With the rise of nationalism in Japan, Japanese were taught to believe they were the favored race and others in Asia (Chinese) were just so many beasts. With the war is China, Japanese soldiers took Chinese for bayonet practice. Japanese doctors practiced difficult operations on Chinese who then died after their operations. Women served as brothel material. Rees lists examples of all these deadly proceedings.
There are no surprises in Rees book. He talks about the fire bombings of Japanese cities, rapes performed on Okinawain women and the shooting of Japanese POWs by the Americans. The fire bombings and use of the atomic weapons on Japanese cities is all true. I am also sure some surrendering Japanese POWs were killed as well as rape. I doubt if this was widespread. I guess Rees is trying to equate that all war has certain evil in it, but it takes away from his expose of the criminal behavior of the Japanese military. This hurt the book.
This is a short book of worthy material for the historian. Be prepared to read some pretty disgusting material on cannibalism.
His attacks on the Americans detracted from the book.
Horrifying account of what man is capable of.......2004-02-14
HORROR IN THE EAST is the book tie-in to a BBC TV documentary of the same name detailing war atrocities committed in the Sino-Japanese War of the 1930ies and the Pacific war in WW2.
Since I watched the documentary, I was eager to read the book as well, and I found it very informative and compelling despite being rather brief (160 pages).
REESE examines the rise of the Japanese empire and war crimes conducted by the Imperial Army. Clearly it is not recommended for the squeamish. Japanese veterans of war remember how they used captured Chinese civilians for bayonet practice, raped and forced Asian women into prostitution ("comfort women"), conducted surgical operations on healthy Chinese (intended as training for inexperienced military medical staff) or even resorted to cannibalism during the hellish campaign for New Guinea. Other chapters revolve around war crimes committed during the battle of Hongkong on Christmas 1941 or the treatment of Allied prisoners of war. The story of the POW camp at Sandakan in Borneo is depicted in great detail. Sandakan was the most horrifying example of mistreatment of Allied POWs during the entire war in the Pacific. Out of the 2500 British and Australian prisoners of war only six (who managed to escape) survived, while the rest perished of malnutrition, mistreatment, on exhaustive marches through the jungles or murder at the hands of their guards.
The infamous rape of Nanking and the terrible biological warfare experiments conducted by unit 731 in Manchuria are covered as well.
Author REESE interviewed dozens of perpetrators and victims and undoubtedly these recollections are very moving and the heart of the book. He manages to show us the mentality of the war criminals and while never attempting to excuse their actions the author tries to find convincing answers to the questions why this could happen. The responsibility of emperor HIROHITO is also adressd.
HORROR IN THE EAST is surprisingly unbiased, provides a balanced view and is never anti-Japanese like many books of its kind. While the focus is on Japanese atrocities the author does not shy away from in-depth detailing of US war crimes like the fire-bombing of Japanese cities. Little is known in the West about the tremendous destruction and horrifying loss of life brought upon Tokyo during the fire-bombing on 9th March 1945, which claimed more victims than the infamous atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Former US Marine Corps servicemen claim that they never took Japanese prisoners and recall appalling acts of barbarism like mutilating enemy corpses.
Personally I found the examination of the kamikaze phenomenon, while unquestionably hugely interesting, a little off-topic. But this is only a very minor complaint.
The book also includes several pages of interesting black-and-white photographs.
Very recommended reading for anyone interesting in the Second World War.
Very informative & easy to read.......2003-05-05
I bought this book thinking it would be similar to the horrific 'The Rape of Nanking'(i.e. all of the book would focus on the atrocities committed in China). Indeed, the first three chapters(I.The China Solution II.Dealing with the West III.Prisoners of the Japanese) do focus on the mindset of Imperial Japanese soldiers and is very interesting and appalling. [Japanese] soldiers were inculcated in a dogma of brutality. In basic training and out in the field, soldiers slapped and beat each other viciously as a way to train and harden the troops. If they were this brutal to each other, it is easy to imagine how they were able to view and treat the Chinese as 'sub-human'.
But it is in the final two chapters(IV.Lurching Towards Defeat V.Endgame) that I learned much of profound interest. Even as the war turned against the Japanese, the Imperial military leaders of the Army and Navy could not even imagine defeat. Japan had never before in their history suffered a loss on the battlefield. As the Allies continually achieved victory at sea and on the islands, the Japanese high command kept fantasizing for 'one big victory' that would sap the fighting will of the Allies and instead opt for peace negotiations. Wrong.
Because of the numerous dark stains committed by the Japanese military(Nanking, Pearl Harbor, barbaric treatment of Allied POWs, 'Banzai!' death charges instead of surrender, kamikazes) and the alieness of Japanese culture(American Marines were incredulous the Japanese worshipped Emperor Hirohito as a living god)these facts formed into a intense hatred of the Japanese by their American adversaries. The Americans would settle for nothing less than the unconditional surrender of Japan - the exact opposite of opting for peace negotiations as the Japanese sorely miscalculated.
Something else I learned was of the fire-bombings of Japanese cities, including Tokyo, just 5 months prior to the dropping of the atomic bombs. I was only aware of the Doolittle Raid. But after securing Iwo Jima, American B-29 bombers used it as a base to launch devastating conventional bomb attacks. The biggest fire storm in history swept through Tokyo and killed 100,000 people.
Another event that I was not aware of (and helped precipitate the surrender of the Japanese where as even the first atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima did not) was 48 hours after Hiroshima, Stalin declared war on Japan and the Red Army quickly moved to engage the Imperial Army in Manchuria. When President Truman received no word from the Japanese after Hiroshima, a day later another atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Unconditional surrender was now the only choice Japan had. (America did concede that Emperor Hirohito would remain in power, but only to make transition to a democratic state easier).
In summary, This book informs on many levels. It describes how the Japanese military worked and how such horrors and atrocities were made possible and basically encouraged. And even more interesting, it explained how the Japanese could make such foolish predictions and assumed outcomes as they thought they could take on the might of the United States.
And best of all, this book reads quickly, informatively, and entertaining(if graphic war can be called entertaining) - a veritable 1-2-3 knockout punch in the murky hit-n'-miss world of military history books.

Book Description
For more than eight decades historians, documentary film producers, folklorists, and scribblers have been fascinated by Pancho Villa's March 9, 1916, raid on the tiny New Mexico border town of Columbus. Villa's motivations for raiding Columbus are, even today, still debated by historians of the Mexican Revolution. One of the most enduring legacies of the raid was the fate of Villa's troops captured during the raid and subsequently during the so-called Punitive Expedition commanded by General John J. 'Black Jack' Pershing.
The majority of Villa's 484 men who attacked Columbus were recruited at gunpoint and told to fight or be shot. Those captured during the raid were later tried for murder--some hanged, some sentenced to long terms in the New Mexico State Penitentiary in Santa Fe.
Although the Villista prisoners of the Columbus Raid have received some scholarly attention in the past, James W. Hurst has now provided us with an excellent, definitive history of their story and fate.
Who were they? What was their purpose? Where they guilty? Was justice done?

An eye-opening examination.......2001-09-11
The Villista Prisoners Of 1916-17 is a historical investigation of the capture, trial, and punishment of soldiers who followed the infamous Francisco "Pancho" Villa. Some were sentenced to hang; others were given life in prison. Their trials sparked a bitter and emotional debate about the culpability of private soldiers who obeyed orders. Author Professor Hurst investigates all the circumstances of Pancho Villa's lethal raid on Columbus, New Mexico, and the confusion of conflicting records on the fate of the captured Villistas. The only surviving trial transcript of the first six Villistas to be caught is used extensively. Thorough documentation along with extensive attention to detail make The Villista Prisoners Of 1916-17 is an eye-opening examination of the aftermath to a turbulent moment in the history of the American West.

Book Description
Silviculture and timber production in tropical forests have a long history going back many centuries; there is thus a considerable body of evidence on both sustainable and destructive forestry practices, evidence central to the ongoing debate on the future of tropical forests. Based on the authors' fifty years of experience in the tropics and their extensive research of the literature, this book collects essential information on the development of silvicultural systems in a variety of tropical forests. The book begins with the early history of silviculture in the tropics and goes on to present the many technical developments and the growth of global exploitation. It describes in detail examples from many countries and considers the economic, ecological and social implications of each. The authors demonstrate that sustainable timber production in many tropical forests is not only possible, but that the necessary techniques have been known to foresters for many decades. This book is a valuable resource for forest managers in the tropics and for advanced students and researchers in forestry and ecology, and will also be of interest to economists, policy makers, and environmentalists.
