There are other, better books in the subject........2001-03-30

For this specialized topic, this book is either too introductory or the contents are not organized well. I will be surprised if anyone can value a bank, or even get close to valuation, after reading this book. If you are interested in bank valuation, I recommend Commercial Bank Valuation by Miller.

This volume critically analyzes and explains the goals, processes, and effects of language policies in the United States and Canada from historical and contemporary perspectives. The focus of this book is to explore parallel and divergent developments in language policy and language rights in the two countries, especially in the past four decades, as a basis for reflection on what can be learned from one country's experience by the other. Effects of language policies and practices on majority and minority individuals and groups are evaluated. Differences in national and regional language situations in the U.S. and Canada are traced to historical and sociological, demographic, and legal factors which have sometimes been inappropriately generalized or ignored by ideologues. The point is to show that certain general principles of economics and sociology apply to the situations in both countries, but that differing notions of sovereignty, state and nation, ethnicity, pluralism, and multiculturalism have shaped attitudes and policies in significant ways. Understanding the bases for these varying attitudes and policies provides a clearer understanding of the idiosyncratic as well as more universal factors that contribute to tensions between groups and to outcomes, many of which are unintended. I got this book with a Medical Micro book for a class. While the approach of this book is occasionally juvenal (I don't need a little story about a boy getting a puncture wound to explain the immune response), it has been a good fall-back reference as the material is organized differently from the other text.

A teacher's perspective.......2006-09-06

The textbook writing is simple but meanders enough to lose focus. The busy student could benefit from the many tables and figures, but somehow the link between text and graphics is lost in the voluminous chapters.The summaries are point like renditions of the text and do not highlight important material. Likewise the comprehensive self-test questions are not graded according to importance and carry no link back to the text.
Overall, a comprehensive textbook, but lacking the focus and layout for easy adoption and study.

A good introduction.......2005-10-07

This text gives pleanty of pictures and the cases studies help reinforce what the reader is learning in lecture and lab. I did not have to use the CD-Rom, but the lab book that goes with this text was a lot of fun.

This book was sent to me in a mistake. I never ordered this book from this individual. Honestly I do not know how this mix up was caused. I am not responsible from other peoples mistakes or the mistake of your services. I do not denie buying a book from him because I did but not the Micro-Biology book.
I would like to speak to some one verbally over the phone so that this can be risolved and at no expense to me. Because I did not order this book. I would like to be reemberst for the money spent to send this product back.

Red Devlin is an aging down on his luck Vancouver realtor who goes about his scheme to sell the White House to a Japanese Billionaire who is still upset that Japan lost World War II. In order to implement his ambitious sale, Devlin enlists the help of a group of pathetic yet likeable misfits, among them are an out of work tow truck driver, a disgruntled government bureaucrat, a recently released ex-con, an aging sexually frustrated socialite widow, and two strippers.

The obstacles that the bunch encounter are laugh out loud funny. All the while the underlying premise remains strangely believable. American citizens get wrapped up in OPEN HOMES FEVER, through the full cooperation of sensationalist media and politicians, all of which leads the wiley Canadian realtor to ... well I won't ruin it for you.

Es un excelente Libro amplia sobre la poco conocida legión romana antes de el imperio, solo que el autor se queda un poco escueto e imparcial en cuanto a la legion Romana de este periodo; en referencia al ilustrador Angus Mcbride como siempre sublime en sus ilustraciones que aporta a esta obra.

Typical of its series, this book is full of useful information, but the plates alone give you a great and accurate picture of the subject. This book deals with the organization and battle gear of the Roman legionaries of one of the most crucial periods in Republican history-the century that saw the latter Punic Wars, the Conquest of Greece, and campaigns in Africa and Gaul-and saw the rise of some of Rome's greatest heroes, Caius Marius and the Scipios.

A concise and approchable summary description of the Roman Republican Army (before the Roman Empire). The book provides information about each type of soldier, their provisions and outfitting, and some discussion of how each type of soldier was employed in battle. This book was clearly written by an expert for reading by others already knowledgeable about Roman army practices, but it can also be used as a starting point to begin study of Roman armies. The drawings are outstanding.

Very good but not impartial.......2002-04-10

Like almost all osprey books, this one is extraordinary; the archeological evidence is solid enough, the angus mcbride plates, altough not the best, are quite good and informative.

But after this favorable review why didn't I gave a 5 stars? Because Mr. Secunda is partial...He portrays the Romans like the "bad guys", he doesn't lie about what the romans did, but he forgets to mention that their foes were as vicious (sometimes worst) as the romans were.

All in all is a good book and I recommend it.

This thin, 80-page, paperback is part of series covering the lives of famous scientists. It is probably intended as an extra reading option for students. The text includes a 15 page timeline of the history of science.

Michael Faraday (1791-1867) is best known for his pioneering work on the relationship between electricity and magnetism. He is credited with the invention of electric generators and motors. He also studied the effects of electricity on various chemical solutions discovering electrolysis, electroplating and assisted Sir Humphry Davy in the discovery of several elements like chlorine, sodium and calcium. He was born the son of a blacksmith, and apprenticed as a bookbinder. He attended lectures on science and read books brought in for binding. In time he secured a position as assistant to Davy at the Royal Institution in London, where he was well known for his public lectures and science demonstrations. He became England's best known scientist in his era. He died in 1867, after a period of declining health.

Training of scientists even now can be considered an apprenticeship. Although Faraday's best known research was in physics, he trained under Davy, a chemist. In addition, the Royal Institution had been established by Count Rumford, whose wife was widow of Antoine Lavoisier. Lavoisier was a famous chemist, beheaded in the French Revolution. The connection is that prior to Faraday's discovery of the electric generator, electricity was produced by crude batteries.

The Gribbins do a great job creating an informative, highly readable story, which is considerably more detailed than would be found in an encyclopedia. Still, the reader hungers for more details of Faraday's professional career, his interactions with other scientists, and the travails he went through before making key discoveries. An additional hundred pages on those details would have been of interest. No index. No references.
