Design:
Well-designed with appropriate section headings. There are also short notes by the side of the pages, emphasizing the important points. Colored boxes were used to show illustrations and applications of real issues.

Content:
This book is based on the U.S. accounting standards. It is very factual, detailed and clear in explanations. There are also well-illustrated examples to enhance students' understanding of the concepts. Issues covered include classifications of items in the financial statements and measuring the items accurately. Ethical concerns are also addressed in the classification and measurement.

For who:
Definitely a good book for students seeking understanding of the concepts behind U.S. accounting standards. As the title suggests, students should have prior knowledge of accounting like basic bookkeeping and double-entry rules. However, given the changing business environment and recent accounting scandals, students should also visit the SEC websites and read the news for better understanding and keeping up-to-date with accounting standards.

Comprehensive Treatment of Optical Communication.......2005-06-18

This is a superb study of electrodynamic theory as applied to polarization optics in todays (and tomorrow'a) telecommunication technology. As far as this review knows there is nothing like it available in the field. The book fills a very real need for those in the telecommunications field and for engineers and scientists who want to come up (or return) to speed in modern physical optics.

Polarization optics is being used routinely in communication systems, but there has been a need for workers and graduate students to have an entry (as well as an advanced) treatise on the subject. Damask's comprehensive stand-alone volume satisfies this need profoundly. In fact, due to its clear exposition of the frewquently complex material, the volume would make an outstanding text for a grad course in EE and physics. It is highly recommended.

Blecch!.......2006-11-26

I suspect many of the people visiting this page found their way to this book through "Wait, wait...." If that's the case, you have a reasonable chance of being a person who has a decent understanding of modern physics, and might be excited by the title of this book. And then you'd be in for a disappointment. The writing is so-so, the characterizations range from poor to bad, and the science is cute but derivative. Some of the ideas in this book could have been cool - the protagonist spends about a week being both alive and dead, for example - but then it just turns into "Friends" for the undead.
This reminded me *very* strongly of other early works from those who went on to greatness (Neal Stephenson's "Big U" comes to mind).... but it *also* reminded me of the works of those who went nowhere (Matt Ruff's "Sewer, Gas, and Electric"). Bottom line - try Felber again in 10 years. He might be great.

Wow! Outstanding Book!.......2006-10-27

This is quite possibly the best work of fiction that I have read in some time. An armchair physicist who enjoys reading books on relativity and entanglement theory, I found this book to be entertaining, creatively written, and very, very humorous! There were many times that I laughed out loud while reading this excellent page-turner.

A novel that actually consists of several, apparently random, stories of extremely interesting characters, "Schrodeinger's Ball" tells an original tale in the most creative of ways. Shifting, at a breath-taking pace, among the several plots, one cannot help but fly through this intricately designed web of (educational) fiction.

While entirely fictional (unless you know of an independent territory of Montana or a friend who is and is not both dead and alive), Felber does a spectacular job intertwining humorous allusions to quantum mechanics throughout the text. Even his choice of words screams of physics-based jokes. For instance, while speaking of an event late in the book, Felber writes, "This was due to all the uncertainty, principally." (232) While that sentence could have been structured any number of other ways it strikes a reader who is familiar with Heisenberg as funny because of the "Uncertainty Principle" inference. This book is laden with similar, subtle references and jokes.

Even if you are not a fan of physics, this book is entertaining and exciting that covers the gamut of human emotions and experience - all in under 250 pages. Pick this book up and read it.

Scattershot Fun.......2006-09-09

Felber's novel jumps all over the place and I admit, it took me some doing to get used to the manic pace of the changes. However, once I got comfortable with Felber's style and got into the multiple plot lines I couldn't put the book down.
The book is ultimately a very witty and touching story about existence, physics and coping with loss.

Now where can I get one of those Humdingers?

This book is terribly (wonderfully) unhinged at the start. It hops around in a demented circle and widens. As it does, it starts to gain a focus point and narrows. Mr. Felber's wit break through often and his broad yet deep knowledge of things scientific hold this together. As things spiral inward there are numerous directions it can take, but Felber shows true heart, and leaves the reader edified, satisfied, drained, filled, excited, and yet mellowed. (Much like a really good, long bike ride).

I judge a work of art by how long I spend thinking about it. This has kept me going over it since I finished it last night, and I suspect it will occupy my thoughts for quite a while.

If your imagination is limited it may bore you. This is not "Jonathan Livingston Seagull," it is not a Thomas Kincaid "Painter of Light" rendition of a cottage at sunset; it requires knowledge and thought, which if you posses, will reward you richly.

Felberpalooza.......2006-09-07

Having been a fan of Adam Felber from his many stints on NPR's "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me!", I've appreciated his wit and wisdom for quite a while. When I learned he had written a book, well, it just couldn't have been published quickly enough to suit me. The wait was worth it! What a story and what a cast of zany, intriguing characters, some of whom know each other and some of whom are like ships passing in the night, brought together by chance occurance.

Mr. Felber is a great student of life, history and science and I tell you, Quantum Mechanics was never this fun in college. The supporting characters are delightfully eccentric and hopefully, fodder for future books. This is a book that should be read over and over, each time absorbing a deeper meaning to the humorous escapades. Go to a book signing and meet the author, if you can. A most generous, gracious and intelligent credit to the human race. Plus, he's a funny guy.

this book provides analysis of weak or failed states in Africa, based on thorough on the ground research and solid historical work. i bought it for my phd dissertation into democratization and violence, but its relevant for any comparative politics/historical work on Africa. precisely because its so well grounded in actual politics, it adds to some of the classic and recent theoretical studies on Africa, while remaining accessible to any one trying to understand what is happening.

Drawing upon fieldwork in a number of troubled regions, Reno has produced a compelling and insightful examination of political realities within Africa's war-torn states. A valuable alternative to the more common hand-wringing and finger-pointing of most African political appraisals.

Clear, detailed, interesting, original........1998-08-05

In the midst of my research on timber Liberia, I was told that the only person who really knew what was going on in West Africa was William Reno, assistant professor at the University of Florida. When I called him to ask for information, he told me about the book that he published just this year. I tracked it down in the library, and was very relieved (after much fruitless searching) to find a readable and informative explanation of the politics of so called "weak states", along with four case studies on West African Nations. Reno's book provided by far the most comprehensive and readable explanation of the modus operendi of this region.

The first two chapters, entitled "The Distinctive Political Logic of Weak States" and "Africa's Weakest States After the Cold War", outline useful background information on the unique political systems in place in sub-saharan Africa. Reno does an excellent job of balancing his political theory with hist! orical examples. The next four chapters, which subsequantly cover Liberia, Sierra Leone, Nigeria and DRC (formerly Zaire), provide detailed analyses of the economic and political situations in these countries. Reno places the factions, the foreign business partners and the conflicting European vs. African interests in a solid context. On Liberia he writes, "The way we think about Liberia is strongly influenced by images of chaos and random violence.... In fact, war in Liberia has followed a clear logic. Warlord pursuit of commerce has been the critical variable in conflicts there. Stongmen have used commerce to consolidate their political power within a coalition of interest among themselves, businesspeople, and local fighters"(p.79).

Reno has combined information gleaned from his travels, dozens of interviews, and unique primary documents to provide a cohesive picture of the West African political system, a challenge of sorts to the conventional World Bank wisdom! that would have all "weak states" conform to its! idea of economic viability. He places in context the confusing behavior of rulers of weak states, with their tendency to avoid bureaucratic efficiency and free market enterprise, to the chagrin of first world observers. Reno writes, "Rulers who face threatening internal behavior intentionally cripple the arms of the state, which weakens the agencies that outsiders prescribe as the best means to mobilize resources to alleviate pressure form the international economy, such as debts, balance-of-payments imbalances, and instruments to enhance state revenues"(p.19). The behavior is necessary, he writes, in order to keep local strongmen in check. The conclusion that he draws from this may cause one to ponder; "The joining of political struggle and accumulation-- even as a violent Kalashnikov lifestyle of protection rackets, forced labor, and fencing of stolen goods-- is as much a candidate for a Weberian capitalist style of life as is a Protestant ethic or a Japane! se way of doing business"(p.30).

Rather than criticising from afar, Reno writes from the vantage of a frist hand observer. His ideas are provocative and well stated, valid for both the ignorant student (myself) and the seasoned researcher.

Webb--not!.......2001-08-04

The book is excellent; takes a complex look at how ranching developed in North America and replaces many myths with facts. A cultural geographer, Jordan is a consummate researcher and explores the way cattle (and people) moved into North America, and how it shaped settlement. If you are like me, and bristle when reading Walter Prescott Webb, because you just KNOW it's not really like that--this book explains what really happened, as cattle and people moved onto the Plains. He provides lots of valuable bibliographic sources, too.

The love of discovery .......2006-04-23

This small book works on many levels. On the one hand it is the story of a young scientist, Leonard Mlodinow and his effort to understand his place and direction in Physics. In another it is the picture of one of the world's great Physics Departments, Cal Tech at the time Murry Gell-Mann, and Richard Feynmann were there and presenting their own very different ways of working in Physics. According to Mlodinow Gell- Mann was like an ancient Greek focusing on the underlying order of the physical world, while Feynmann like an ancient Babylonian focused on the phenomena themselves.
The major emphasis however in the work is on the lessons the apprentice young aspiring physicist learns from the great mentor and master Feymnann. And the heart of the work is a series of insertions, transcripts of tapes of what Feynmann actually told Mlodinow about the study of Physics.
Here one major message emerges one which corresponds with the Feynmann 'legend' . Feynmann teaches the importance of going one's own way , trusting oneself and one's intuitions, and living for the love of the process of scientific discovery.
Feynmann tells Mlodinow.

" I can say I am a scientist. I find excitement in discovery.
The excitement is not in the fact that you've created something, but that you've found something beautiful that's always been there. So scientific stuff affects every part of my life."

There is an especially moving part of the book when Feynmann speaks about his first wife , Arline who died very young from TB . He speaks to Mlodinow at a point where he himself is close to the end from cancer and says the following. "Now I've been to the hospital and I don't know how long I have to live. It happens to all of us sooner or later. Everybody dies. It's just a matter of when. But with Arlene I was really happy for a while, so I have had it all.After Arlene, the rest of my life didn't have to be so good, you see, because I had already had it all."

I have only indicated a small part of what this very rich small book contains.

I live in San Diego, and I pass Balboa Park every day on the way to and from work. I bought 2 copies: one for a fiend who visits us here and enjoys the park, and the other for us. The architecture is amazing, and this book contains some historical photos and a plethora of information about the park and its history. If you have ever visited Balboa Park and long to see it again, this would be the book I would suggest.

I am a long time San Diegan with a passion for local history. This book does a wonderful job of telling the history of our beloved park. There are plenty of photos with descriptive captions. Excellent text as well. Mr. Showley, My hats off to you! Thanks for a great book.
