Book Description
The second edition of this authoritative textbook continues the tradition of providing clear and concise descriptions of the new and classic concepts in financial theory. The authors keep the theory accessible by requiring very little mathematical background.
First edition published by Prentice-Hall in 2001- ISBN 0130174467.
The second edition includes new structure emphasizing the distinction between the equilibrium and the arbitrage perspectives on valuation and pricing, as well as a new chapter on asset management for the long term investor.
"This book does admirably what it sets out to do - provide a bridge between MBA-level finance texts and PhD-level texts....
many books claim to require little prior mathematical training, but this one actually does so.
This book may be a good one for Ph.D students outside finance who need some basic training in financial theory or for those looking for a more user-friendly introduction to advanced theory.
The exercises are very good."
--Ian Gow, Student, Graduate School of Business, Stanford University
*Completely updated edition of classic textbook that fills a gap between MBA level texts and PHD level texts
*Focuses on clear explanations of key concepts and requires limited mathematical prerequisites
*Online solutions manual available
* Updates includes new structure emphasizing the distinction between the equilibrium and the arbitrage perspectives on valuation and pricing, as well as a new chapter on asset management for the long term investor

Brazilian Reader Review.......2007-05-20
The book is good and easy to follow ... it lacks some formality ... but from a pratical standpoint this book is enough.
The people searching for formal derivations and more in depth concepts, I suggest Ingersoll or Huang, or both.
I am pursuing my Master in Finance and the book alone was not sufficent to the course, although it clarified lots of arcane maths from Ingersoll/Huang.
Excelent book, there are opportunities to improvement........2007-01-09
This is the perfect book whether one is interested in understand asset pricing in an intermediate level. It includes all the important topics such as CAPM, CCAPM, APT avoiding unecessary math.
On the other hand, the second edition was not carefully reviews, and there are a lot of erros in the excercise section .
For a third edition, my recomendation is to include an additional chapter about efficient markets.
INTERMEDIATE FINANCIAL THEORY.......2006-11-12
I recommend this book for everyone who is studying finance or work on it. This is an excellent work paper to understand these matters. Furthermore it has a quite understandable language even for those which have some handicaps about this subject. This book was recommended to me from my Investment professor in a Finance Master Course and I found it a very good investment.
Accurate title for an excellent book.......2003-11-05
This book does admirably what it sets out to do - provide a bridge between MBA-level finance texts and PhD-level texts. While the mathematical prerequisites are relatively limited (comfort with matrices and Lagrangians), they may not be in the toolkit of most MBAs. (Note that many books claim to require little prior mathematical training, but this one actually does so.)
This book may be a good one for Ph.D students outside finance who need some basic training in financial theory or for those looking for a more user-friendly introduction to advanced theory.
The exercises are very good. There are some typographical errors but no more than typical for this kind of book.

Book Description
Harry, toast of the L.A. party scene, has just landed in the Hamptons facing an ultimatum: clean up his act or be cut off from the family fortune. But the "sleepy resort" that his father remembers is now the hottest party scene on the East Coast. And everyone has plans for Harry...
Soon, millions are riding on who can win his heart and his hand-in marriage, that is. Two women-an overweight heiress and a self-made, but heartbroken, businesswoman-vie for the prize. But can anyone really tame Harry?
Author Mara Goodman-Davies grew up among the Hamptons elite before turning to comedy and writing. When Harry Hit the Hamptons is filled with the kind of delicious gossip only an insider could know.
Goodman-Davies dishes on the flings and schemes of the rich and famous in this hilarious and heartwarming debut novel-a lively ride through a summer of love and trickery, all set against the celebrity-filled Hamptons scene.

Good Book!!!.......2007-05-07
Loved this book! Very well written, very funny!!! I loved Harry hit Hollywood and this one was just as good!!! Awesome characters!!!
Easy & Fun read.......2005-11-12
Although not Hemmingway this is a delightful easy read. If you are in the mood to relax and not be serious about life this is the book for you. Rich & entertaining character descriptions with a laugh per page.
Awful writing, ridiculous characters and a moronic ending... .......2005-07-05
I bought When Harry Hit The Hamptons as a beach book for my vacation. I wasn't expecting Hemmingway, but was hoping for some light entertainment. Unfortunately, just within a few pages, I realized that this is a lost cause. Ms. Goodman-Davies's characters are absurd. No one talks the way Harry or Penny or Jessica talk, unless they are brain-damaged. And I am at a loss of words when it comes to how the character Juan speaks. I doubt that the author has ever talked to or knew a Spanish-speaking person.
The character Harry uses the words "dude" and "man" excessively, because he is from Los Angeles. And the author's endless references to "JAPs" and "WASPs" were truly nauseating. Finally the sexual situations were so juvenile that they can only be written by a teenage boy whose only source for sexual knowledge is Playboy.
All in all, a total waste of time and money...even for a beach book.
Book Description
This real-life thriller inspired Tom Clancy's famous novel The Hunt for Red October. It chronicles a mutiny aboard one of the Soviets' most advanced warships, the destroyer Storozhevoy (Sentry in English), led by the ship's political officer, Valery Sablin, who intended to launch a revolution and overthrow the government. Word of the 1975 mutiny was suppressed by the Soviets, but an American naval officer studying at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, named Gregory Young managed to piece the story together. In 1982 Clancy came across Young's report of the incident and wrote the fictionalized account that launched his career.
One of the Cold War's most dramatic tales, the Sentry mutiny and the events that preceded and followed it have never before been told in detail. With the help of recently declassified KGB documents and Sablin family papers, Young and Russian linguist Nate Braden offer readers a full account of events as they unfolded. In telling the story, the authors shed light on the many myths of the Cold War, including the Soviet Union's military and economic capabilities.
Once poised for a brilliant future in the Soviet Navy, Sablin had been entrusted with indoctrinating his crew in Communist Party principles. But the disillusioned idealist had to make an agonizing choice between working within the system and destroying it. His candid, rational pleas to begin a new Russian revolution convinced half the Sentry officers and all the sailors to seize control of the ship and sail to Leningrad and overthrow Leonid Brezhnev. The ending to this true story, however, is far less rosy than Clancy's fiction. The Sentry never reached its destination, and the KGB executed Sablin. The authors hope the publication of their book will encourage the Russian government to open Sablin's entire files and provide answers to remaining questions regarding his fate.

My Cousin was on this ship.......2007-08-19
While visiting Latvia in 2006 and visiting a cousin in Saldus he mentioned to me he was on this ship a year prior tot he mutiny. I had never heard the story so on returning home I ordered the book thru Amazon (second hand and the postage cost more than the book - an absolute bargain). Apart from being a thrilling read it also highlighted the desperation of the captain who represented all that was good in the soul of those who longed for truth. A believer in the revolution he beleived he was doing the right thing as he expected a second Rusian Revolution to commence with his actions. Misguided or mad or just a true believer. Read the book and make up your own mind.
Trouble in Utopia.......2005-11-23
During most of the Cold War, the Soviet military was perceived as a highly effective fighting force with motivated servicemen and modern equipment. This book tells the other side of the story by describing a mutiny that was organized by a political officer looking for a public platform to denounce the corruption of the Brezhnev regime and foster a change towards a more idealistic communist society. It provides a good overview of life in the Soviet Navy and morale problems caused by poor food, very poor housing, and abusive hazing within the enlisted ranks. It also provides insight into how government paralysis over accepting criticism result in only two of the crew being criminally charged for the offense. Finally, the book discussed the ramifications of the mutiny with respect to Soviet politics and the perception of the Soviet military by the Western powers. The writing style is straightforward but very intelligible and the subject matter is very well handled in terms of scope and detail.
A term paper on an event in Soviet naval history.......2005-08-14
I heard that this book was an account of a true story about a mutiny in the Soviet navy that became the basis for Tom Clancy's first hit "The Hunt for Red October." Technically this is true. However, be warned that the number of pages devoted to appendicies and footnotes exceeds the number devoted to the mutiny. This is an academic biography of the political officer mutineer -- his history, his beliefs, something of the mutiny, and the political response that is as documented as it is boring. If you are looking for this type of information, the auther did a good job --it probably rates 4 stars. However, if you are looking for a sea story, you've been warned.
A True "Red October".......2005-05-25
The Soviet destroyer "Storozhevoy" (Sentry in English) was one of the Soviet Union's most modern ships in 1975. The political officer on board was one of the rising stars in the fleet. A dedicated communist he became convinced that the Government in the Soviet Union had deviated away from true communism. His solution was to get the crew of the ship to stage a mutiny where he was to launch a revolution to get rid of the current leadership and restore the Soviet Union to its original comunist goals.
Needless to say, the rest of the Soviet Navy did not take kindly to this sort of thing and neither did the KGB. Elements of the Soviet Navy attacked the "Storozhevoy," stopped it, boarded it, and arrested everyone.
This incident was the trigger for Tom Clancy to write "The Hunt for Red October." In one point in the movie Jack Ryan is talking to the president. And he mentions this incident, identifying the ship and the political officer.
This book isn't as exciting as the "Red October",but then again, it's true. An interesting story to come out of the Cold War.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
Book Description
"Through loosely linked, informal essays Stepto . . . traces his own past through his family's history and migrations. . . These evocative meditations on home and the family are thoughtful and moving." -Publisher's Weekly "[A] graceful family memoir. . . . [Stepto] wonderfully evokes the delights and confusions of childhood." -Laura Green, The New York Times Book Review "A book . . . [where] eloquence is the essential ingredient. A major waterway for our national journey." -Michael S. Harper, author of Songlines: Mosaics; Dear John, Dear Coltrane; and Images of Kin "Blue as the Lake is a lyrical memoir rendered with precision, grace, and intimacy. Stepto takes us on a 'blues-ride' through places . . . which are locations in his personal geography but also special places in the collective memory and history of African Americans." -Mary Helen Washington, editor of Black-Eyed Susans/Midnight Birds

Wonderful, Eloquent, Funny.......2001-05-12
Bob Stepto, a professor at Yale University, recalls his early youth growing up in Chicago and spending summers at a nearby lake community. He weaves his stories of the lake, school, his family and his African American community into a seamless tapestry filled with humor and warmth. Stepto is a great story teller. Don't miss it.
Charmed.......2000-05-14
When I began the book, I knew the author was a sophisticated man, a professor at Yale. As I read, I discovered the depth of his observations of his life. I was awed by his understanding of what was going on around him and his wonderful way of expressing it.
What could have been just another light little book became both easy reading and deep. It exposed something of the author's soul without being maudlin or trying to find meaning that was not there.
I enjoyed the book so much, I read it again immediately to find the parts I missed the first time.

A tour of Labview applications.......2004-08-07
This book is obviously written for a developer who wants to choose a suitable programming language, heard about labview, but is not sure if it can do what he wants. The idea of the book is to give you an overview of the many real-world problems which can be solved with lab view. It covers many potential areas of applications, from image processing and digital filters to interfacing with measurement equipment - but everything is described in very generic terms. Indeed, if image processing is discussed on 10 pages, how much can you learn from such a short discussion? You will get an idea what hardware you may need and what toolkits can be used for each particular purpose, and you may learn a few technical terms along the way - but you will not move an inch towards becoming a better LabView programmer. In fact, there is practically nothing in this book about programming. A few labview programs/ diagrams that are reproduced in the text are for illustration purposes only: they are never discussed in detail and often contain undescribed VIs -or, as another example, include structures like frames which contain, say, 4 frames, but only one of them is shown in the figure. The enclosed CD contains only a trial version of labview and electronic version of labview manuals - nothing else. Some chapters are written a little better than the others - for examples, those on fuzzy logic and Fourier Transform are the better ones - but they are still insufficient for practical work. My impression from this book reminds me a feeling which one gets from a tour of a high-end research facility offered to general public. You see the equipment, see the curves on a computer screen, get an idea what is being done here, may even memorize some slang words used by the scientists, but it neither makes you qualified to work in that lab nor teaches how to do a similar things at your own place of work. So is this book. Don't waste your money on it if you want to learn how to program LabView.
Book Introduces Concepts/Capabilities in Labview - Not More.......2001-03-16
I basically went through the tutor in Labview, and started programming. Now that I'm more 'advanced' I looked to this book for help. I bought this book with the hopes that it will give me some pointers on improving my programming. IT DID NOT.
Basically, this book gives a good overview of how Labview works, what's in Labview, and what you can do with Labview. How you can do it it isn't explained. Lots of re-hash of material from other books not Labview related (pages on Fourier transform, optimization ideas *not much*, process control, etc).
If you're looking for a book that'll help you do programming, this isn't it. If you're looking for a book with ideas on what you can do with Labview (but with no help), this is the book for you.
