Book Description

If you can take only one lesson away from this book, let it be this: The only person you can depend on to take care of you financially is...you!!!

Successful businesswoman Georgette Mosbacher learned this lesson the hard way. Rich and socially prominent now, this smart, ambitious woman grew up in poverty, helping to raise her three younger siblings while her grandmother and mother worked to keep the family afloat after her father's death. As an adult, divorces from two powerful men left her financially and emotionally bereft, while a split from the former Cabinet Secretary Robert Mosbacher rocked her world yet again. Georgette's eventual triumph over these deeply painful experiences taught her, at her very core, that women cannot depend on anyone but themselves for their financial and emotional well-being. She learned the critical role that money plays in every woman's ability to achieve her goals. And she learned many specific yet simple strategies to ensure her won financial security and, beyond that, to accumulate real wealth--the kind of wealth that ultimately enabled her to make her loftiest dreams come true.

Now, Georgette shares the secrets of her financial success and emotional triumphs with you. Whether you're starting your first job or entering your golden years, whether you're married, single, widowed, or divorced, whether you're living on a modest income or earning a bundle, Georgette's simple step-by-step plan for economic independence will give you the tools you need to take control of your money and make your own financial dreams come true.

As down-to-earth and outspoken as Georgette is herself, It Takes Money, Honey is a truly comprehensive money guide, covering all aspects of a woman's financial life. Sharing examples from her own experiences, along with those of a diverse group of women, Georgette offers sound, straightforward strategies to help you live within your means, build your savings, invest for the future and achieve your financial goals. She shows how to create a financial safety net so you will never be caught short in a crisis, from the loss of your job to the loss of your husband. You'll learn about ways you can maximize your earnings and minimize your debts. And you will learn how to overcome the emotional hurdles that prevent us from making the most of our money as well as how to develop the attitude and style that are essential to achieving your goals in life.

Among the specific issues she addresses:

How to break the paycheck-to-paycheck cycle

How to get out of debt, and stay out of debt for good

How to easily build a fully diversified easy-to-understand investment portfolio with as little as $100

How to make sure you're paid what you're worth

How to make a success of your own business

How to ensure financial fairness in your relationship with men

And why it's critical for every woman to build a secret stash of cash that only she knows about

But It Takes Money, Honey is about a lot more than just ensuring financial security. It is, in fact, a guide to realizing all of your goals, a realistic and pragmatic manual that will show you how to live the kind of life you dream about. Not the kind of life your parents wanted for you, not the kind of life that your husband or boyfriend wants, not the kind of life that your friends hope to lead, but your own, very personal vision of what will bring you happiness and fulfillment. Because, as Georgette says, "Life shouldn't only be about being safe. Financial security is crucial but it's not enough. You should always, always be reaching for more."

In It Takes Money, Honey, Georgette tells you exactly how to get it. The rest is up to you.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Very useful advice.......2004-04-28

I found this book very useful from a professional standpoint: I am a divorce lawyer whose clients are mostly women. I am always surprised to find how many women, in this day and age, still depend on men for their financial security. I have met so many women who are divorcing (or being divorced) and have absolutely no idea how much their husband earns, whether he has any savings, investments or other assets, where he does his banking, and so on. Furthermore, they have no savings of their own. As you can imagine, this puts them at a tremendous advantage. Georgette's advice is very basis - too basic for women who are already financially savvy - but most women would benefit from reading this book and applying its principles.

2 out of 5 stars Hits and Misses.......2003-03-08

This book is best when Georgettte is describing her own personal experiences and triumphes over difficult circumstances. At those times, I am inspired by her determination and encouraged to keep strong in my own struggles. But her much discussed separation and divorce cracked her wide open. Lots of her deeply held beliefs do tumble out here and there. Despite all of her experience, she really seems to think it takes a man to be complete. It's just an overall impression I get from the book. (Honey you are successful now) And the advice on investing sounds pretty funny (written before the market went bust) now that we're all losing all those unrealized capital gains that intoxicated everyone over the last decade. It was hard for me to figure out what the book was supposeed to be? A pep-talk? Financial advice? Well, it was probably healing for her to write. I do empathize with her pain over her divorce.
Georgette is an admirable woman and I like her; won't stop liking her. But the book's not that great.

5 out of 5 stars And to think this was a FLUFF book........2002-07-04

Wow, I am very impressed with this book! I've seen this book in the bookstore on various occasions, but I didn't purchase it because I thought it was a bunch of fluff and no substance. Well, my curiousity got the better of me and I just had to read it. After several pages, I had to stop reading it....because the information hit me square in the head and I had to get a notebook to jot the information down! You see, I have a demanding career, and I'm starting a business of my own. Despite that, I was depending on man to secure my future. Thank Goodness for Georgette's advice "wake up" is perfect for what I need in my life. I sure wish my mom had read it before my dad passed away. My mom fell victim to a lot of stuff that was addressed in the book...but she didn't know any alternative. I didn't either, and I would've made the same mistakes. Georgette is like the friend who tells you what you need to hear, whether you WANT to hear it or not. I will be buying several copies for friends/family for sure. I hope to meet Georgette one day and thank her for kicking my [rear end] into the right direction. Maybe it'll be on a plane in the first-class section!

5 out of 5 stars Common sense approach to money for women........1999-08-22

This is the first financial planning book any woman should read. Ms. Mosbacher gives simple and specific advice on how to get started planning your financial future. The reader should keep in mind, however, that Ms. Mosbacher believes that money is the most important thing in the world. As long as one doesn't lose perspective, the guidelines in this book are very helpful.

5 out of 5 stars The Unsinkable Georgette Does It Again!.......1999-07-20

Georgette Mosbacher is a real inspiration. Despite the naysayers who won't acknowlegde her achievements due to her marriages to high-profile, high-finance husbands, one only has to read this book and her last ("Feminine Force") to realize that this lady knows what she's talking about. "Money, Honey" it very practical (none of this visualizing mumbo jumbo ala Suze Orman) and covers the basics of managing money very well. No, it's not an academic financial analysis, but the fact is the basic financial skills she writes about are, unfortunately, concepts many women have no clue about implementing in their lives. Too many have the idea that money is some mystery, like fate or luck, that either you have or you don't. Georgette empowers the reader by saying "You may not have it yet, but I'll show you how you can get it." Georgette is to be commended for writing a book that will help a lot of people take money seriously and improve their well-bing as a result. On a personal note, I was sorry to read in the book that Robert Mosbacher walked away from this very intelligent, beautiful, elegant woman. His loss! Best wishes for future happiness, Georgette. You deserve it.

        Book Description

The late John Fleming, emeritus Professor of Law in the University of California at Berkeley, was the pre-eminent torts lawyer of the age; his Law of Torts has influenced generations of students and scholars, and remains a classic of legal literature. In this volume, distinguished academics and judges from around the world pay tribute to him in a collection of essays which range widely across tort law, legal theory, legal history and comparative law. Topics discussed include: tort and human rights; the duty of care in negligence; codification of the law of obligations in Europe; the basis of strict liability in particular and of responsibility generally in tort law; and aspects of products liability. These stimulating essays have much to say about the past, present and future of the law of obligations and will be of great interest to scholars and lawyers of all legal systems. From the editors' preface John Fleming was one of the most influential writers on the law of torts and comparative law in the English-speaking world this century. His towering contribution to scholarship is evidenced not only by the great prestige his work attracts in academic circles but also by the frequency and high respect with which his work is cited by judges in appellate courts of many jurisdictions. The authors of this collection of essays on the law of obligations intend it as a tribute to his achievements.

              Book Description

Since 1956 the author has been making extensive and detailed investigations of saline lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau. On the basis of large amounts of reliable first-hand data and multidisciplinary analysis, the book deals with the temporal-spatial evolution of the plateau saline lakes and the prospects for inorganic salts and organic resources and their exploitation and protection, as well as the relationships between saline lakes and global changes. This book is the first English monograph on saline lakes on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau - the `Roof of the World'. Compared with books about saline lakes in other areas of the world, this monograph is written in a multidisciplinary, comprehensive and systematic way. It may be used by graduate students, teachers, researchers, field geologists and engineers as a reference book in research, teaching, etc.

Vulnerable enough to believe in the whole girl-meets-boy, girl-and-boy-fall-in-love, the-two-live-happily-ever-after, blah, blah, blah? News flash: It never happens that way. Eventually, a girl learns that the road to Mr. Right is littered with more than a few Mr. No Ways.

I Wish I Never Met You is the hilarious, uncensored confession of one woman, reeling from a lifetime of dating disasters -- the blind dates, the nightclub crawlers, the ballers, the liars, and the ugly but earnest suitors. As she tries to sort out what she's learned from the heartache and the embarrassments, she'll have you laughing out loud, thanking God it's not your life while recognizing that you've made all the same mistakes.

0 stars - but that was not an option...

Everyone knows those people who keep talking and talking, doing nothing else but bore you, right? Well, this book kind of feels just like that.

In lack of something better to read I worked myself through it, only to get more and more bored the more read. The main character is one of those women who sleep around, without any morals or concerns. All she cares about is herself. In order to pursue her questionable goals she threatens people with weapons and burns houses down.

I kept asking myself, why do I have to hear about all that, and I don't, right?
So, spare yourself; every other book I ever read was better than this one.

Not only was this book funny but it was an expression of a clearly "hurting" black woman who just had enough! She is venting throughout the whole book and the summaries at the end...whew! is all I can say. These men are everywhere and ironically I could identify with two possibly three of the scenarios. She was just shedding light on the realities of the urban dating games. I think some are offended that the author DARED TO GO THERE!!! LOL IN YO FACE BUSTAS!!!!!! FINALLY...

You'd know what is wrong with this woman's dating life. I really didn't find it funny, I found it downright cruel.

Sisterhood of Spies is a real-life James Bond story, double-X chromosome-style. Here, though, the heroines aren't sex kittens in black spandex, but rather upper-crust women risking their lives in the service of a country at war. Elizabeth P. McIntosh was a reporter in Hawaii when the Office of Strategic Services (the C.I.A.'s precursor) recruited her to aid in its campaign of wartime disinformation. Fifty-five years later, she's taken it upon herself to tell the story of the women who served with her undercover--some of whom have also achieved aboveground celebrity, such as Marlene Dietrich and Julia Child. The narratives contained in Sisterhood of Spies couldn't be any more gripping if they were written as fiction: Nazi interrogation ordeals, daring escapes across mountain passes, expeditions behind enemy lines, even Mata Hari-style affairs. Ms. McIntosh's book is a fond ode to these women and a bravery that has remained unsung too long.

                  4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-06-10

This book was an easy read, with all the background into the beginnings of the OSS. I was amazed to find out what a large role women played in the OSS, was shocked actually. Some of the stories are pretty gripping knowing what kind of danger the people were in. If you love to find out little known history this book is for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read and Great People.......2007-02-22

This wonderful books reveals a side to the spy wtory that is at best undertold. The women who cracked codes, recruited contacts and worked undercover are an important part of our history. Their secret, hidden but heroric actions shows the skill and bravery with shich they undertook they assignments. Great reading and important lessons.

                  5 out of 5 stars Great Book.......2007-01-10

Well written, with both serious and funny anecdotes about WWII. It's nice to see women's contributions so well documented. Brings home the fact that the war could not have been won without the help of the "invisible women" behind the scenes who filed the papers, answered the phones, typed up reports, etc. Not to mention the women who were spying behind enemy lines and thinking up propaganda strategies. It reminds us that women also willingly died for our country during WWII. For anyone who wants to learn more about the intelligent and courageous women of the O.S.S., I highly recommend this book.

3 out of 5 stars These sisters break the glass ceiling in WWII intrigue.......2002-06-22

For readers who enjoy history (particularly WWII), McIntosh's "Sisterhood of Spies" is a worthwhile experience. The book looks at women in all areas of OSS during WWII in all parts of the globe. McIntosh's writing style is a bit bothersome at times (too much "gung-ho" spirit for me; that's why I only give it three stars) but she knows her stuff and the profiles of these women and their work during the war more than make up for it. I liked the stories of daring (particularly "the lady with the limp" or the episode to steal the naval codes or the woman captured by the Germans). I learned a great deal about hte different aspects of OSS - the R&A, black propaganda (forging postcards to demoralize the families of Japanese soldiers fighting in Burma). McIntosh does a good job of creating a sense of the lifestyle - the pressures, the challenges. She also gives a good bit of detailed "back story" on the women - showing their life before the war, how they got involved with OSS, how their experiences with OSS transformed their lives, and finally, a glimpse of their lives post-war. These women definitely challenged perceived notions of how women could contribute to the war effort. Most all of them encountered "narrow thinking," particularly from the military branches they were working with, and managed to overcome that. I found the stories both fascinating and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars Less Would Be More.......2002-04-22

McIntosh starts strong in "Sisterhood of Spies," providing the background of the organization and then composing small vignettes of representative women and thier exploits. As the books goes one, however, she seems to want to include thumbnails (names/backgrounds) of more and more women, and the exciting details of the few become rarer. These women were truly extraordinary, in ways that few people today can imagine, and they certainly deserve recognition. Perhaps McIntosh could have written more about her own interesting history with the OSS and left the other women to an author that felt less emotionally beholden to include everyone.

They're back again! England's top SIS agents Tweed, Paula Grey and international foreign correspondent Bob Newman, along with ace sniper MArler and heavies Butler and Nield are facing a dangerous threat. Europe is under attack as various high ranking politicians seriously concerned with the lack of leadership and military spending in Europe are being taken out one by one. Tweed is on the list. Paula is almost kidnapped by Arab fundamentalists in Vienna. In Slovakia, Arab leader Hassan has made his residence and is planning a major military strike. Tanks and mechanised infantry are massing in Iraq. Tweed and his crew head for Geneva and then Austria on the train of HAssan and his professional female assassins, known as the Sisterhood. Not only that, one Emilio Vitorelli suspects English redhead Tina Langley is responsible for the death of his wife and is out for revenge, but just who can Tweed trust? Can they save Europe again?! Once again, Colin Forbes has delivered another gem of a novel which will keep you reading and entertained right to the end. Fast pacing, a good, steadily flowing narrative and well-researched locations contribute nicely to the interesting and rather plausible storyline.

                      Book Description

"This first-rate biography presents us with a heroine considerably more interesting--more original, more powerful—than the personality sentimentalists have often portrayed."
                      —The New Yorker

"Mabee chronicles Truth's life with restrained passion, refusing to fall into the traps of history by accepting what has merely been repeated...It is impressive in its depth, sparking a new interest in the woman being unveiled--a woman so many of us thought we already knew."
                      —The Boston Globe

"I am particulary impressed with the extremely high quality of the primary research and with the presentation of specific historical evidence on areas of Truth's life. . . . that have been mythologized by other writers. The book is obviously the result of years of careful and laborious sifting through antislavery newspapers and memoirs of Truth's activist associates. . . . [and] makes an invaluable contribution to our understanding of this woman's public life and her relationship to the reform movements of nineteenth-century America. Equally important, in a tempered and reasoned way, it presents us with an object lesson in how political movements (perhaps necessarily) attempt to appropriate. . . . historical hero figures for their own purposes.

Sojourner Truth will stimulate lively discussions among both academics and nonacademics interested in the history of race relations in the United States."
—Jean Humez, author of Gifts of Power: The Writings of Rebecca Jackson, Black Visionary, Shaker Eldress

Many Americans have long since forgotten that there ever was slavery along the Hudson River. Yet Sojourner Truth was born a slave near the Hudson River in Ulster County, New York, in the late 1700s. Called merely Isabella as a slave, once freed she adopted the name of Sojourner Truth and became a national figure in the struggle for the emancipation of both blacks and women in Civil War America.

Despite the discrimination she suffered as both a black and a woman, Truth significantly shaped both her own life and the struggle for human rights in America. Through her fierce intelligence, her resourcefulness, and her eloquence, she became widely acknowledged as a remarkable figure during her life, and she has become one of the most heavily mythologized figures in American history.

While some of the myths about Truth have served positive functions, they have also contributed to distortions about American history, specifically about the history of blacks and women. In this landmark work, the product of years of primary research, Pulizter-Prize winning biographer Carleton Mabee has unearthed the best available sources about this remarkable woman to reconstruct her life as directly as the most original and reliable available sources permit. Included here are new insights on why she never learned to read, on the authenticity of the famous quotations attributed to her (such as Ar'n't I a woman?), her relationship to President Lincoln, her role in the abolitionist movement, her crusade to move freed slaves from the South to the North, and her life as a singer, orator, feminist and woman of faith. This is an engaging, historically precise biography that reassesses the place of Sojourner Truth—slave, prophet, legend--in American history.

Sojourner Truth is one of the most famous and most mythologized figures in American history. Pulitzer-Prize-winning biographer Carleton Mabee unearths heretofore-neglected sources and offers valuable new insights into the life of a woman who, against all odds, became a central figure in the struggle for the emancipation of slaves and women in Civil War America.
