5 out of 5 stars If you are buying one financial book this year, this is it........2003-04-22

As a practicing Certified Financial Planner (CFP®) and Chairman of the Financial Planning Association of MA, I am asked quite often to recommend a book that touches on one's finances without being too technical or boring. "Let's Talk Money" does the job better than any other book I have come across. (And believe me, I've read and reviewed more than you can imagine). This book touches on a variety of topics that effect 99% of the public. Sure there may be books with catchier titles like..."How I made a million dollars in 3 weeks" but if you are looking for real practical advice that's actually fun to read, this book can't be beat.

5 out of 5 stars A personal financial guide that's like talking to friend.......2000-05-07

I happen to be a Certified Financial Planner licensee, and one component of my business is educating employees of corporations across the country on a variety of personal finance subjects. During, or at the conclusion of workshops, I am often asked by employees to recommend a good book that will assist them with taking control, or learning more about personal finance. Until now I never felt there was one particular book that actually approached and explained the subjects in a way most people can relate and would motivate them to learn more. Most other personal finance books, though they may be comprehensive, are dry and aren't written in a style people who are not in the profession can relate to. This is not the case with Let's Talk Money! Its nice to have a book that I can strongly recommend. Kudos to the authors!

5 out of 5 stars Let's Talk Money.......2000-04-07

What a wonderful book! The structure is such that you can read it straight through or just reference a particular area of interest. It is so easy to read, too. Not something usually attributed to a Financial book!

I would recommend this book to novices and savvy financial people alike. For the novice, it is a wonderful guide to getting started. Many people feel overwhelmed when veiwing their personal financial lives, asking "where do I start"? This book will get you started in a very straighforward manner and then give you great tips for how to proceed.

At the same time, Let's Talk Money is very helpful for people who are more fiancially savvy. It serves as a reminder of things they should do, may give them some new ideas, and serve as a reference guide going forward.

Either way, this is a must read! I enjoyed it immensely!

5 out of 5 stars A must read for people getting their act together..........2000-04-06

I am not someone who wants to spend hours on end figuring out how to make my money work for me. Being a single mom, I need the facts and easy steps to get me through how to make my family stable. Chapters 1 - 4 made things simple and easy for me to figure out where I was and what action I needed to take next.

5 out of 5 stars A simple and easy to follow "how to" for financial security.......2000-04-04

As a financial planner, I often browse the bookstore section on financial planning to see what is offered. This section has exploded, as financial planning seems to have become the hot topic in this age of growing retirement funds and stock options. How does the buyer in need of help choose the right book from so many? The answer is Let's Talk Money: Your Complete Personal Finance Guide by Dee Lee and David Caruso. This book is different.

Most books on financial planning talk about what the consumer should do, with a lot of theories about how to manage money. The consumer still does not know where to start or what to do next. This book goes beyond theory and provides a road map, with checklists and easy to use forms. The organization of the book allows the buyer to use any section independently to solve a financial problem or to use the whole book to put a game plan in place. It is this versatility that makes it a great resource for the financially confused.

This is also a book written by practicing financial planners, and it shows. The authors used their experience with clients to answer the most commonly asked questions and to provide clear and easy to follow solutions. All in all, this is a book for anyone trying to make sense of the many financial decisions that we all face today.

5 out of 5 stars A great book loaded with useful information.......1998-05-01

I read this book as part of an ongoing research project into the evoulution of the first multicellular organisms, and it provided a great range of information, covering an array of differing viewpoints as to what happened when and why. The book is a collection of "papers" written by accaimed experts in the field from all over the world (including the USA, Russia, Germany and the UK).

The book covers a range of different fauna of varying ages from all parts of the world. It takes a range of groups in turn, looking into each one in depth.

It looks at the Ediacaran fauna, which consisted of frondose and discoid organisms, found in the latest Precambrian prior to the evolution of hard parts, listing evidence to show how they fitted into the evoultionary scheme of things.

It moves on to cover the first instances of hard body parts, and in sections, loks at evolutionary trends found in keynote fossil groups, like the burgess shales, monitoring evolutionary changes in them, and how, why and when the members of these groups diversified.

It is a fascinating book, opening the mind to a range of ideas as to where the first multicellular animals came from, and although very technical at times, is well worth the read

            Book Description

The inorganic and organic water constituents, often called color-producing agents (CPAs), responsible for water color are generally referred to as water quality parameters. Utilization of water color for assessment of water quality parameters can be achieved by using the established techniques in aquatic optics attained over many decades. Aquatic optics can be subdivided according to whether the natural water body is salty (marine), inland or fresh (limnological), or coastal (often brackish). The authors describe the transformation of water color under varying natural and anthropogenically-driven conditions and, for the first time in a quantitative manner, a closed circle of issues related to remote sensing of water quality in optically complex waters generally inherent to inland and marine coastal waters. Primarily, the text synthesizes the solutions of problems in remote sensing, incorporating mathematics, hydrobiology/hydochemistry, atmospheric optics and ecology.

Demonstrating the strength of tradition in Ireland, Physicists of Ireland: Passion and Precision is a collection of essays on leading figures from the history of physics in Ireland. It includes physicists born outside of Ireland who carried out significant work in Ireland as well as those who had strong Irish roots but carried out their work outside of Ireland. The book is well illustrated with diagrams and photos of historical interest and rounded off with useful suggestions for further reading. It might come as a surprise to many that several leading English physicists are actually from Ireland.

              Book Description

              Welcome to the “Easy” life!

When overworked, underpaid women’s wear retail slave Lisa Galisa (the rhyming name is only the beginning of her agonies) suddenly becomes the personal assistant to an infamous Chicago socialite, she accidentally, hilariously, becomes the toast of the town. Catapulted into the role of trendsetter, this frustrated working-class girl seizes the opportunity to unleash some South Side mayhem on a gullible society that hungrily embraces the next “new thing.”

Lisa offers them the “Easy” lifestyle, encouraging her new crowd to shake it up and party alongside janitors, fry cooks, and bricklayers. Soon she has the upper crust patronizing dive bars, wearing cheddar-hued polyester, and grooving to the bewitchingly canned melodies of easy listening—the emperor’s new music. And the social set is having it.

But as the Bridgeport-born-and-raised charlatan begins to buy into her own fraud, longing to leave behind the land of retail hell and Polish “saah-sidges” for life among the beau monde, her eccentric family and a mysteriously handsome janitor with a penchant for astronomy dip into their own bag of tricks to keep her on the right side of sanity, if on the wrong side of the tracks.

Join Lisa Galisa and the rest of these charming oddballs at the Easy Hour, where they find the best remedy for a hard existence is a little easy listening.

5 out of 5 stars The Smartest Chic Lit EVER.......2004-04-03

All you Bridget Jones fans, prepare to meet Lisa Galisa!! This book is HILARIOUS and smart and fun. Leslie Stella knows how to tell a story that hooks you right in. From the amazingly creative setting of Fishman's department store to the subplot of Lisa's friend Tim's job, you finish the book (in too short a time!) and want MORE. And anyone from Chicago will love reading her takes on our cultural rituals.

Read this and pass it on!!

              4 out of 5 stars A very funny book.......2003-11-25

I really enjoyed this book. The reviewer who loves stories that involve working class people, but thought that Lisa Galisa was "a somewhat depressing character" definitely picked the wrong novel. This is not about some working class woman overcoming obstacles Norma Rae-style. The Easy Hour is about being funny. If you like chick lit novels like Helen Fielding or Jane Green stuff, you might enjoy this. It is a little less sentimental or romancy than a lot of other chick lit type novels. It is also a lot sharper and funnier than most of them. I would never recommend this as what I might refer to as "Literature" with a capital L, but it was fun and engaging.

5 out of 5 stars Witty Sarcastic Fun!.......2003-11-24

The Easy Hour is the story of Lisa Galisa, a lazy store clerk who ends up as a personal assistant to a rich Chicago socialite. The book is not real strong on plot but it's so witty and funny it didn't really matter to me. Lisa's family is a riot and every time her sister did I psychic reading("pet" psychic reading, that is) I thought I might die laughing. Lisa is often very unlikable but at least that made her real and I liked how honest she was with herself. I highly recommend this book as a light "get your mind of things" kind of book...read it instead of watching a Friends episode -- it's funnier and better wriiten :-)

5 out of 5 stars can i give this book more than 5 stars?.......2003-09-19

Wow! By far the funniest book I have read. Very smart, clever, interesting, fun. How many more ways can I say that I just loved this fun, fun book? I am recommending it to friends and strangers alike. If you have ever spent time working in a high-end service/customer relations type job this is a must read! Our hero struggles on the edge of the world of the super-elite, wondering how she can fit in with her taste for the finer things and her blue-collar background.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely smart, extremely funny.......2003-08-07

From the description of The Easy Hour on the back cover, I felt it would definitely be a fun read, but I was pleasantly surprised at how intelligent and sharp the writing was. This book is so much more than the average chick-lit novel, even though it certainly has elements that will appeal to fans of that genre (women struggling with career/love/family, written in a humorous style). For one thing, the political, historical, and cultural references throughout the story really appealed to me and made the book come alive; it was such fun reading the fashion show and department store scenes, and then suddenly have references to Eugene Debs, Herbert Hoover, and the Hessians thrown in. I particularly liked the character who runs a political 'zine out of his parents' basement...so funny, yet sweet and interesting enough not to be a total parody.

The pacing of the book is flawless, the plot has many unexpected twists along the way that held my attention, and the humor and writing style is sharp enough to warrant comparisons to David Sedaris.

Peter Maass from the center of the nightmare in Bosnia, a war correspondent's montage of images - eerie, grotesque, ironic, angry, absurd. A Serb and Muslim, friends before the war, exchanging gossip via shortwave radio hours before they will try to kill each other. The Serbian president coolly denying reports of atrocities that have been witnessed by hundreds. A battlefield doctor performing miracles of surgery without anesthetic. Drivers without headlights gambling their lives in the darkness of no-man's-land while schoolchildren scamper across Sniper Alley. The author takes us with him into the minefields of modern war with a fierce, vivid, and personal book.

                  Book Description

Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize

Peter Maass went to the Balkans as a reporter at the height of the nightmarish war there, but this book is not traditional war reportage. Maass examines how an ordinary Serb could wake up one morning and shoot his neighbor, once a friend--then rape that neighbor's wife. He conveys the desperation that makes a Muslim beg the United States to bomb his own city in order to end the misery. And Maass does not falter at the spectacle of U.N. soldiers shining searchlights on fleeing refugees--who are promptly gunned down by snipers waiting in the darkness. Love Thy Neighbor gives us an unflinching vision of a late-20th-century hell that is also a scathing inquiry into the worst extremes of human nature. Like Michael Herr's Dispatches (also available in Vintage paperback), it is an utterly gripping book that will move and instruct readers for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Incomplete by all measures!.......2007-09-12

"Love they neighbor" caught my eye as it was supposed to cover a topic of which I have great interest. I have devoured about 20 books on the most recent Balkan's war and I have actually traveled to the region on two occasions since fighting started/ended. I found this book to be a failure both artistically and in the realm of journalistic confirmation..
It is not the author's biases which I have issue with; it is much more the child like way that issues are presented. The author makes the history of the region seem to be irrelevant and then makes snap judgment. As we know from WWI, WWII, the Cold War etc...the history of the Balkans makes it a unique geographic area. To ignore the expansion of the Ottomans, the 1st and 2nd Balkans War as well as WWII....well it just shows the "Ugly American" side of this Author." I would go into more detail, however I would say that besides the grandiose vocabulary used in the book....I would rate this piece at the 9th grade level....at best. There are far more interesting and intriguing pieces written on this era.. I found this book far too simple and bereft of history which makes the writings irrelevant. If you want to read a far better book I recommend. " My War is gone and I miss it so...." Or any book written by Misha Glenny more worthy of a read.

                  5 out of 5 stars I have a confession to make..........2006-07-28

I have a confession to make - I am guilty of ignorance.

While in 1992 I was taking my first trip to Europe, falling in love for the first time, getting my introduction to Pentecostalism and learning to live, people were being exterminated only several hundred miles away from me.
While I was going into my fourth year of high school education in Bulgaria, boys and girls my age were being raped and tortured and murdered and it took me 15 years to find that out. How is it that I knew nothing about that war? How is it I never paid attention to the news, never took interest in what was happing in Bosnia? How? How come I turned a blind eye to the grizzly events occurring in a land where people spoke Slavic language similar to my own, had features similar to mine, shared history similar to the one of my county? How can I have been so ignorant of the genocide in Bosnia?

Then, in the winter of 1992 I came to the United States and looking back now I find I wasn't the only one guilty of ignorance. For three years (1992-1995) United Nations, countries like Britain, France, Russia and of course, the USA, looked to resolved the conflict by ignoring the direct problem in the region. Peaceful solution is what everyone was talking about and looking for, and all the while men, women, and children died by torture, by fire, by knives to their throats. Over 200,000 people. 200,000 died in this conflict and having read Peter Maass' book I feel disgusted with myself, with humanity in general.

I suspect there were hundreds of other conflicts that occurred and I missed. I know there were many more that history sheltered away from humanity and perhaps I'll never learn about their victims, but having read this book and having learned of the dangerous games politicians and people with power played, I'm left with a nauseating feeling of shame. Shame for being a human and for possessing the realization that evil is something people grow inside, something they cultivate and feed of. For all of our 100,000 years of civilization we have nothing to show except death, destruction and deceit. Is this what we should be proud of? Is this the meaning of life?

I recommend this book to everyone. It's hard to find stories out there that are so open, so raw, so real in their context that make readers seriously wonder what society, civilization, morality and ethics really mean. Mr. Maass, thank you for being so honest.

4 out of 5 stars A little editing would do wonders.......2004-12-16

This is a fascinating book. Unfortunately the author has a habit of referencing other books (most notably Black Lamb Grey Falcon and Catch-22) far too often, usually just when you've lost youself in the book. His insight and explanations of what he experienced are great but they often stray back and forth in time. This sometimes gets a little hard to follow. All of these could be cured with just a little editing. Other than that the only problem I had with the book is that I wanted to know more of his experiences.

5 out of 5 stars An astounding read..........2004-07-25

This astonishing book tells the story of a journalist who was sent to Bosnia to cover the Serb invasion of that country in the early 1990's. The story the author has to tell is amazing, sad, and troublesome. It is absolutely incredible that this could happen in 'civilized' Europe in the 1990's, and no one intervened to stop it. The author tells the stories that you did not read in the newspapers, and gives the perspective of someone who suffered with the Bosnians. A highly engrossing, highly recommended read!

5 out of 5 stars Gripping, shocking, and simply terrifying!.......2003-09-20

This book showed how terrible the War in Bosnia really was. The media failed to show us the bloodbath that it became. I am sorry that we as a nation did not do more to help the Muslims in Bosnia. Whether we are Christian, Jew, Muslim, or Atheist we have a moral responsibility to help defend a small country from genocide. The shocking truth in this book opened my eyes but it also deeply depressed me. One is tempted to give up hope in the face of such monstrous reality. We live in a very unpredictable, hostile, and politically unstable world and Peter Maass shows just how evil it can get.

                        Book Description

Plains Indians have long occupied a special place in the American imagination. Both the historical reality of such evocative figures and events as Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Sacajewea, and the Battle of Little Bighorn and the lived reality of Native Americans today are often confused and conflated with popular representations of Indians in movies, paintings, novels, and on television. Ingrained stereotypes and cultural misconceptions born of late nineteenth-- and early twentieth--century images of the romantic nomad and the marauding savage have been surprisingly tenacious, obscuring the extraordinary cultural and linguistic diversity of the dozens of tribes and nations who have peopled the Great Plains. Here in one volume is an indispensable guide to the extensive ethnohistorical research that, in recent decades, has recovered the varied and often unexpected history of Comanche, Cheyenne, Osage, and Sioux Indians, to name only a few of the tribal groups included. From the earliest archaeological evidence to the current experience of Indians living on and off reservations, a wealth of information is presented in a clear and accessible way.

The history of the Plains Indians has been a dynamic one of continuous change and adaptation as groups split and recombined to form new social orders and cultural traditions. Contact with Europeans and the introduction of trade in horses, slaves, furs, and guns dramatically altered native societies internally and influenced relations between different groups. In the face of pressures resulting from America's westward expansion throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries -- the extinction of the bison, the imposition of reservation life, and the assimilationist policies of the U.S. federal government -- the native peoples of the Great Plains have struggled to preserve their distinct cultures and reorient themselves to a new world on their own terms.

The Columbia Guide to American Indians of the Great Plains is divided into four parts. Part I presents an overview of the cultures and histories of Plains Indian people and surveys the key scholarly questions and debates that shape this field. Part II serves as an encyclopedia, alphabetically listing important individuals and places of significant cultural or historic meaning. Part III is a chronology of the major events in the history of American Indians in the Plains. The expertly selected resources guide in Part IV includes annotated bibliographies, museum and tribal Internet sites, and films that can be easily accessed by those wishing to learn more.

The third in a six-volume reference series, The Columbia Guides to American Indian History and Culture, The Columbia Guide to American Indians of the Great Plains is an invaluable resource for students, teachers, and researchers.

This book was used in an upperlevel course titled: Indians of the Great Plains. The book was full of fact after fact and run-on paragraphs. It was a difficult read for me, I couldn't retain the barrage of information. The instructor didn't even use the book and rarely mentioned it. As a result, my university bookstore is not buying the book back for next semester. The only useful part of the book was the timeline at the end.
