I knew that I had to take care of my debt now or carry it with me forever. This book provided an enormous amount of useful information. It forced me to take a serious look at my spending habits and rethink the role of credit in my life. Hammond's writing is down to earth and easy to relate to. I highly recommend Life Without Debt to anyone concerned about their financial well-being.

Good reading/reference material to have on hand.......1998-01-27

This was my first book that I have read by Mr. Hammond and I enjoyed it emenously! This is one of those books that you will reference over and over again.....a good one to keep close on the book shelf. Specifically, I enjoyed the case files that Mr. Hammond used in the book and found that even though it relatd to me personally, there is still hope at the end of the tunnel.

I found this book to be full of imaginative stories that still held enough reality to be very believable. The characters are well developed, and I had a sense of being on the mountain with them. Bravo, Sis!

Quirky, engrossing...I savored every minute of it.......1999-12-30

In her first published work, author Diana Carra draws upon her own experiences in painting a portrait of life in a small, close-knit community in the Pennsylvania Anthracite Mountains. The book is a brilliantly and sensitively written collection of tales involving the local citizenry. The denizens of Dunnelson are not caricatured hillbillies, and Carra is respectful of their culture without glorifying (or degrading) the plain, simple folk as anything more than just that---plain, simple folk. Yet amidst this seemingly backward, isolated community, there are strange goings-on, and things that (literally) go bump in the night. This is what keeps the book so intriguing and urges the reader on. What howls on occasion late at night? Who is the mysterious flute player serenading Dunnelson at dawn? These mysteries remain unsolved yet serve as the thread with which Carra weaves her narrative.

The offbeat, unusual circumstances occurring in Dunnelson have a Twin Peaks quirkiness about them that is satisfying without digressing into stereotypy. In the hands of other authors, the subplots could readily detour into the sinister realm of horror, but Carra wisely bears right, merely brushing against the supernatural and allowing the reader to draw their own conclusions. The Love Slug tale begins with what the cat dragged in: a bluish, mollusk-like creature that may or may not be indigenous in Dunnelson history. The cat's owner is a lonely widow who, curious to identify the slug, seeks out a neighbor, a bachelor who is also a loner. The Love Slug is Carra at her best: is the chemistry that ignites between the two the result of their collective loneliness, the aftereffects of homemade raisin wine, or the extraterrestrial matchmaking-influence of the mystery creature, which throbs and pulses as the chemistry begins?

It is a pleasure to highly endorse Dawn at Dunnelson as a refreshing read, and I urge you to pay close attention to author Carra. I'm anxious to learn more from her sequels. (Midnight at Dunnelson? Noon at Dunnelson?) In her first effort, Carra demonstrates a remarkable and skilled savvy for artfully compiling her collection of short stories with an uncommon deftness. Bravo!

A fascintating read. This book gets you right into the actual experiences faced by our soldiers. It is about feelings, conditions, etc.

Great First Hand Account of the African Campaign.......2005-06-04

This book is an edited compilation of Ernie Pyles' dispatches during the North African Campaign of World War Two (each chapter was originally two or three columns and were woven together to make the story flow better). It describes the sea voyage from England, the landing in Algiers, and the drive across North Africa, ending with the German retreat and surrender.

Pyle gives a great accounting of all of the different types of people that compile a war effort - the nurses, cooks, mechanics, pilots, and of course the infantry. He tends to stay away from the brass and talk with the soldiers. The style of writing is very quaint - when ever a soldier is introduced in a story, Pyle gives his/her hometowm and often his/her address as well. The writing flows surprisingly well - and I say surprisingly because if one just looks at the text, consisting of short sentences and paragraphs, it would give the illusion of being choppy. It is infact beautifully written from a humanistic stand point.

Pyle doesn't gloss over the horrors of war, his own fear, the hardships or the set backs. He talks about the mistakes we made in the administration of captured Algiers, and how we were defeated in the initial combat against the Germans.

The reason why Pyle was/is so famous is he brings to life all of the warm anectodes that make life in a combat zone bearable - the unselfish acts of courage and kindness - as well as the sense of loss when a friend will no longer be with us. That was the true beauty of Pyle's work.

Again, this is a fantastic book for anyone seeking to learn who were the men and women that fought WWII and what life was like for them.
