Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read for all 'Traditional' Fixed Income Managers.......2003-11-30

This book does indeed fill an important gap in the literature - in bridging the quant and the strategist.
Simply put, the author has assembled a very readable set of ingredients from which one could 'proficiently' manage a corporate bond mandate.
The chapters on credit portfolio risk measurement and optimization are very informative and leave the right questions open to interpretation and future research.
The collection of analytical and simulation based approaches and empirical results is excellent and useful for everyone - no matter what the level of experience or expertise of the reader.
The reason for 4 stars is that I feel too much time was spent on discussing the KMV approach (which although well-known, has a number of weaknesses), not quite enough time was spent on the development of simulation-based approaches, and the author does not attempt to integrate market and credit risks directly.
This being said - there is enough detail in this book to lead the inquisitive reader into these subjects in more detail with a great background.
Excellent book

      * Reprint of the scarce American edition, translated and edited by John E.Hall. With notes and references to English and American cases. Emerigon [1716-1785] was the leading French authority on commercial law. His work was held in the highest regard by English and American jurists. James Kent observed that "no subject in Emerigon is discussed without being exhausted." Lord Ellenborough said he was an "unrivalled" theorist and practical writer. This treatise on bottomry and respondentia is a useful companion to his treatises on maritime law and maritime insurance. Citations from Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 293.

In the enchanted city of Turai, the royal family is corrupt, the politicians can be bought, and the civic guards have better things to do than guarding. Thraxas may look unprepossessing, being overweight and not quite overbrained, and more interested in pursuit of his next glass of beer than pursuit of justice, but if you're in trouble in Turai this portly private eye is probably your only hope. Turai is no stranger to death in all its forms-except that now a silent and insidious variety of death has entered the city, and no one knows who will die next. What they do know is that everywhere Thraxas goes in his search to recover a missing magical jewel, the mysterious death has been there first, leaving the dead or dying as its calling card. Thraxas hasn't a clue, but he does have a pressing shortage of funds, and if stopping the unseen, unknown silent killer is what it takes to recover the jewel and replenish his wallet, he'll take the job. But will he solve the mystery, or join the dance himself. . . ?

Very amusing, dodgy academics, chain mail bikini wearing scholar genius, pot head head sorceresses, evil orc wizards, multiplying sorcerous items and a publican with relationship issues.

Oh, and a pie shortage. A terrible, horrible, calamitous event. Who cares if the city crumbles, politicians die, unicorns ravish maidens, or whatever, if you can't get a decent meat pie?

In other words, very fun. Thraxas will do what is needed and right, to ensure his food supply.

                                  4 out of 5 stars A fantasy P.I. in a fantasy Rome.......2007-06-19

An amusing novel in a series of books about a private investigator in a fantasy version of ancient Rome called "Turai".

A little like Glen Cook's "Garrett P.I." series, but this reminded me even more strongly of Lindsey Davis's "Falco" novels about an informer in the real Rome.

This is the fourth and most recent to date in a series comprising

                                  Thraxas
                                  Death and Thraxas
                                  Thraxas & the Sorceres
Thraxas & the Dance of Death.

Like Marcus Didius Falco, the hero of this book, Thraxas, is an investigator with a lot of enemies. Like Falco, he has a lovely associate, though instead of a razor-sharp senator's daughter, Makri is a part human, part Elf and part Orc, lethal with a sword, and sometimes wears a chainmail bikini described as "one of the smallest garments ever seen in the civilised world."

Like Garett but unlike Falco, Thraxas lives in a city where sorcery and magic add their dangers to the usual crop of merely human villains.

In this fourth book in the series, Thraxas is hired to recover an extremely important magical jewel which has gone missing. But every time he gets close to the missing item, he finds a collection of dying or recently killed victims instead. Soon everyone from senators to the press is blaming him for a mysterious wave of murders, and the public are making bets with bookmakers on how many people will get killed before Thraxas's latest case has been resolved.

Meanwhile Makri is falsely accused of theft and Thraxas is falsely accused of cowardice. With his licence to investigate suspended, Thraxas is in big trouble - but not nearly as much trouble as the city of Turai will be in if he doesn't find the stolen jewel before certain other people do ...

Entertaining if a little silly. If you have read and enjoyed either the Garett P.I. or Marcus Didius Falco series, and don't object to a little escapist fantasy, you will probably enjoy the Thraxas books.

If you enjoyed this or other books about Thraxas, have not previously heard of Falco, and would like to read an even better series about a similar character in the real world, then I recommend youtake a look at the Falco novels, the first of which is, "The Silver Pigs" by Lindsey Davis.

Sorting out other people's problems may pay the bar bill, but his sometime assistant Makri, is getting in trouble for being a swot, his landlord is getting between him and a good dinner, and the Next Great Orc War still hasn't started....

Thraxas isn't back at the Avenging Axe, he's working an unpleasant case, is the subject of an interesting bet, and isn't enjoying it at all...again

There is a mass of literature on Napoleon and his times, yet there are but a handful of scholarly works that seek to cover the Napoleonic Wars in their entirety, and fewer still that place the conflict in any broader frameworks. This new study redresses the balance. Drawing on recent findings and applying a "total" history approach, it covers the causes and effects of the conflict and its place in the evolution of modern warfare.

3 out of 5 stars A first attempt at this period of Europe's development.......2007-04-25

The stated intent of this book is to give an overall view of an enormous conflict; enormous in geographical extent, in time and in its impact in the short and long term on a relatively long period in the continued development of Europe from an originally geographical phenomenon towards a political entity. This stated intent is more important than the rest of the book and should be useful for later authors.
A major blemish and departure from that intent is the author's fascination with the minutae of battle and battle field. Tedious reading at best, unless the reader has first class knowledge of the landscape in question two hundred years ago and an excellent map, and in the context of this book pointless.
A question that the author did not touch on, nor has as far as I know anyone else done so, is why Napoleon chose to strike at Moscow rather than at St.Petersburg. Moscow had great historical, emotional and religious importance but St.Petersburg was the center of government and the residence city of the head of state, the Czar. Louis XIV dictum "L'état, c'est moi" applied in full. A "coup de main" encircling St.Petersburg and thus severing the head from the body might have been successful and much less costly.

It had some good points, particularly economic ramifications of the wars, but was too broad to be of serious use. Perhaps as a high-school classroom text it would be of more use

Early on the morning of October 21st, 1805, the British Fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Nelson, encountered the French navy a few miles off the Spanish coast near Cape Trafalgar. As it became clear that a fight was inevitable, the French and English ships drew into battle formation. Aboard his flagship Victory, Nelson offered his famous laconic signal to his seamen--"England expects that every man will do his duty"--and gave the order to fire. After over six hours of bloody exchanges the British had achieved an overwhelming victory, Nelson--his fame assured for the ages--lay dead from a sniper's bullet, and Napoleon's dreams of an invasion of England were forever dashed. Because of its dramatic nature--the one-sidedness of the British victory, Nelson's death at the very moment of triumph--Trafalgar has often been viewed as an isolated feat on the part of the great English commander, or at best the result of a naval campaign begun only months earlier. But as Alan Schom shows in his widely-acclaimed book Trafalgar: Countdown to Battle 1803-1805, this apocalyptic showdown was actually the result of a strategy laid out by the British Admiralty two years earlier, when Napoleon issued orders for the creation of what would have become the largest army flotilla ever before assembled. The Emperor's aim was to invade the British Isles with a force of over 167,000 men conveyed aboard nearly 2,400 vessels--his plan was successfully thwarted not because of the tactical genius of Lord Nelson on a single day of battle, but rather because of the brilliant strategy and remarkable perseverance of the hitherto unsung hero Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. Until now the facts surrounding this unprecedented military buildup have been largely ignored or misinterpreted by historians. In fashioning his brilliant and gripping reinterpretation of the events leading to the famous battle, Alan Schom has mined the rich and previously unexplored archives of England and France to place Trafalgar in its true historical scope and context. He shows convincingly how Cornwallis (brother of Lord Cornwallis who surrendered to Washington at Yorktown) conducted a brilliant blockade of the French fleet both at Brest and off Spain, effectively ruining Napoleon's invasion plans. He also demonstrates the importance of Prime Minister William Pitt who mustered a powerful army to defend England's shores, while reinvigorating a run-down and demoralized Royal Navy. And by letting them speak across the years from the journals and memoirs they left behind, Schom brings a rich and varied cast of characters to life--from politicians, admirals, and generals, to the common soldiers and sailors of both sides. This book is far more than just a naval history. It tells the compelling story of the centuries-old French-British rivalry as it appproached its culmination at the dawn of the nineteenth century. Marvelously written, Trafalgar brings a freshness to an episode often recounted but never before fully understood.

4 out of 5 stars Background to Trafalgar.......2004-07-08

This book by Alan Schom geared more toward the background history of the Battle of Trafalger and the working of Admiral Sir William Cornwallis who commanded the British Channel Fleet during the initial years of war against France. Schom doesn't get into the actual battle itself until the last part of the book so if you are looking for more complete account of the actual Battle of Trafalger, you should look for an another book. This book looked at the entire scope of the campaign from 1803 to Neslon's funeral in 1805.

One good aspect of this book was that it gives a limelight to William Cornwallis, a hardy and highly skilled British admiral who held everything together and helped set up the situation for Horatio Nelson to take over and win the battle and campaign. Cornwallis have often been overlooked and shortchanged by many historians who previously have given him only lip service before moving on to glorious Nelson and his deeds.

One bad aspects of this book was a near unchallenged disrespect and disdain the author have for Napoleon. What did this French Emperor do to Schom's ancestors that made the author so hostile? From what I read, it seem that entire defeat of the French fleet lies squarely on Napoleon's shoulders and if a French cabin boy trip over himself and began to shed tears, it was Napoleon's fault!! This author hates Napoleon to the bone.

But overall, it was an interesting reading of the Trafalgar campaign, easy to read, nicely researched and presented (except when Napoleon get involve) and overall, a justice to Cornwallis.

5 out of 5 stars If you read one book about Trafalgar, this should be it........1998-09-17

Alan Schom goes well beyond the traditional view of this decisive sea battle. While most historians give a reasonable tactical account of the action and its strategic importance in the history of the Napoleonic wars, Schom goes in depth exploring the minds of 18th Century Britons. His exporation of British politics, military development, and how these interact with affairs on the continent are intriguing. He also exposes readers to Admiral William Cornwallis who architected the events that gave Horatio Nelson the opportunity to deliver a death blow to the Combined Fleet. Even if you think you know a lot about Nelson and the Battle of Trafalgar, this book will fascinate you and hold your interest to the end.

4 out of 5 stars A Gripping Depiction of an Authentic "Epic Sea Battle".......1998-01-07

Curious about why the might of Napoleanic France could never bring England to her knees in the aborning years of the 19th century? Ever wonder why all of England owes a fanatical debt of eternal gratitude to Lord Viscount Horatio Nelson, Vice Admiral, that century's first true military "celebrity?" "Traflagar, Countdown to Battle" answers in eminently readable detail these and related queries about the events leading up to one heck of an authentic "epic sea battle." This is a book the serious history reader can enjoy for it's compactness and reference, while prodding the neophyte to potential further study. As a whole, "Countdown" describes the Royal Navy's critical role in keeping France's voracious Emperor and his mighty legions "safely" on the Continent - and thus away from England's shores. Equally enlightening are the subplots to this desperate action. The heart of the study reveals an unbeatable combination: The on-shore British Admiralty - a body of experienced fighting seamen - executing a flawless naval strategy over months and years, across Channel and seas; and the audacious at-sea Fleet commander, Lord Viscount Nelson. Nelson, famous and hero-hailed even before his capstone battle at Trafalgar, emerges naturally as "Countdown's" central figure of towering naval skill and puzzling vulnerabilities. Schom's portrayal of Nelson, a hugely successful commander in a navy full of battle-toughened winners, exposes the Admiral's passionate hatred for the French and his contempt for their Navy. It fairly discusses his human triumphs and human flaws. Schom whets the reader's appetite by recounting Nelson's agonizing months-long and oceans-crossing pursuit to bring the reluctant French Admiral Villenueve's fleet to battle. Along the way, the reader discovers enough personalities and naval trivia to set the final awful battle - where scores of heavily-armed ships hurled iron and shot at one another for five hours - in gripping relief. Historians and casual reader alike will appreciate Schom's description of the joy Nelson feels as he finally corners the French and their Spanish allies at the Spanish port of Cadiz in 1805. At Nelson's deadly thoroughness in formulating his bold plan - which annihilated the French threat to the British Isles. At Nelson's glee as his flagship "Victory" glides headlong and under galling fire into the very center of the combined French and Spanish line of battle as it sails - hopelessly overmatched - off Cape Trafalgar. Finally, at the height of Nelson's glory in the ghastly battle, the actions and events that immortalized the Lord Viscount, who, with the likes of Drake, Wellington, and Churchill, holds a dear and hard-earned place among England's military immortals and in the hearts of her people.

Maurice Hewson was a midshipman in the Royal Navy. He was captured near Brest, France in 1803. Many aspiring officers like Hewson were treated as glorified N.C.O.'s and were harshly used by some French commandants, just like the men. His march to the prison depot at Verdun, hundreds of miles away, took months and he arrived more dead than alive after bad conditions and abuse that understandably angered his sense of being an officer and a gentleman. The next couple of years were relatively pleasant as he lived on parole in the town, but the final breakdown of exchange led him to become a determined escaper. Richly illustrated with contemporary scenes and maps, Hewson's narrative is clear and concise and does not suffer from the 'heaviness' that many modern readers find with writings of the period. A must for any escape enthusiasts' bookshelf.

This release of Captain's Hewson's narrative is a hard-cover version which has been edited by Antony Brett-James and is worth snatching up. He has taken Captain Hewson's accounts and provided an excellent introduction to the story which not only sets the scene, but explains much of the background to the narrative. It is also lavishly illustrated with both maps and pictures of the various places in France - and people.

The story itself is gripping. Captain Hewson was a Naval officer who was captured off the coast of France just after the failure of the treaty of Amiens in 1803 - and thus he became one of Napoleon's Prisoners. His march to his 'prison' in the central France town of Verdun was gruelling and he almost didn't survive. His description of his life in Verdun, the conditions and his further escape attempts are left unedited but Brett-James provides helpful footnote to help explain things.

There have been several books on British prisoner's of wars over the years - Roger Boutet de Monvel and Mrs Elton have both written collective stories of several prisoners or escapers. They are also both quite good - but out of print now of course. They both also lack the wonderful advantage this book has, its illustrations. Book Description

In 1801 Britain and Bonaparte made an armistice, which became the Treaty of Amiens in March 1802. In the brief period of peace which followed, British attitudes underwent a major change, so that when war began again in May 1803 there was little or no dissent from the view that the war had to be fought to a finish and Bonaparte's power destroyed. This was partly the result of Bonaparte's underhand methods during negotiations; but it was also due to the conclusion reached by the many British visitors to France during the interval of peace that Bonaparte was extremely dangerous, anger at his stealthy political advances in Europe and America, and outrage at his detention and imprisonment of British civilians when war began again. The attitude of the British government headed by Henry Addington, and in particular the diplomatic methods of the Foreign Secretary Lord Hawkesbury (later the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool) were decisive in countering Bonaparte's methods; they receive their due in this first detailed examination of events, based on original materials.

Trafalgar, the most famous and most strategically significant victory in the age of sail, was not an isolated event. Rather it was the culmination of a campaign that began as soon as war was resumed in May 1803 and aimed ultimately at the invasion of Great Britain. To this end Napoleon attempted by ruse and elaborately disguised manoeuvres to bring his scattered and blockaded squadrons together for long enough to give him command of the Channel, which he fondly believed was all that was necessary to ensure a successful landing. Therefore, this period becomes a perfect demonstration of the workings of seapower and reveals that, however great a strategic genius on land, Napoleon never really grasped the principles of British maritime defense, gleaned as it was from over two hundred years’ experience. This is not to say that the invasion threat was treated lightly, although some of the rumored devices belong to the world of science fiction’ on the other hand the anti-invasion operations included the first use of such futuristic weapons as torpedoes and rockets. Little of the naval warfare of this period is not in some way connected with the main campaign, and this volume is devoted to the great wars of 1793-1815, charts all the major naval events of 1803 to 1805, including America’s first full-bloodied naval war, with the Barbary States.

B> From a truly global perspective, this narrative tells the story of human events on the move—the exciting "event history" of wars and politics, booms and busts, the rise and fall of empires, and more—as well as the broader development of human institutions and ideas as they evolve through time. Coverage of both events and broader trends is presented (a) as part of still larger global movements, (b) through the lives of the people who lived it, and (c) as succinctly and vividly as possible. Volume I—The Great Enterprise: A World History to 1500—explores ancient civilizations of both the old-world center (3500-200 BCE) and Asia, Africa, and the Americas (2500-200 BCE), as well as classical civilizations (500 BCE-CE 500) and expanding cultural zones around the world (500-1500). For those interested in World History, Comparative History, Humanities and Civilization as well as Multicultural Studies.

I brought same book (used from Amazon). It is an excellent books especially it had pretty good coverage from ancient civilization (Mesopotamia, Egypt, India, China, Greek, Roman) to Medieval, to modern world. The coverage is pretty fair. I especially like the ancient history portion, well documented. However, medieval/middle ages is kind of short and abridged especially how Roman empire fall.
