Martin Scott Manufacturer: Baen ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1416509070 |
Book Description
In the enchanted city of Turai, the royal family is corrupt, the politicians can be bought, and the civic guards have better things to do than guarding. Thraxas may look unprepossessing, being overweight and not quite overbrained, and more interested in pursuit of his next glass of beer than pursuit of justice, but if you're in trouble in Turai this portly private eye is probably your only hope. Turai is no stranger to death in all its forms-except that now a silent and insidious variety of death has entered the city, and no one knows who will die next. What they do know is that everywhere Thraxas goes in his search to recover a missing magical jewel, the mysterious death has been there first, leaving the dead or dying as its calling card. Thraxas hasn't a clue, but he does have a pressing shortage of funds, and if stopping the unseen, unknown silent killer is what it takes to recover the jewel and replenish his wallet, he'll take the job. But will he solve the mystery, or join the dance himself. . . ?

Book Description
There is a mass of literature on Napoleon and his times, yet there are but a handful of scholarly works that seek to cover the Napoleonic Wars in their entirety, and fewer still that place the conflict in any broader frameworks. This new study redresses the balance. Drawing on recent findings and applying a "total" history approach, it covers the causes and effects of the conflict and its place in the evolution of modern warfare.Customer Reviews:

Trafalgar: Countdown to Battle, 1803-1805
Alan Schom Manufacturer: Atheneum ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0689120559 |
Book Description
Early on the morning of October 21st, 1805, the British Fleet, commanded by Admiral Lord Nelson, encountered the French navy a few miles off the Spanish coast near Cape Trafalgar. As it became clear that a fight was inevitable, the French and English ships drew into battle formation. Aboard his flagship Victory, Nelson offered his famous laconic signal to his seamen--"England expects that every man will do his duty"--and gave the order to fire. After over six hours of bloody exchanges the British had achieved an overwhelming victory, Nelson--his fame assured for the ages--lay dead from a sniper's bullet, and Napoleon's dreams of an invasion of England were forever dashed. Because of its dramatic nature--the one-sidedness of the British victory, Nelson's death at the very moment of triumph--Trafalgar has often been viewed as an isolated feat on the part of the great English commander, or at best the result of a naval campaign begun only months earlier. But as Alan Schom shows in his widely-acclaimed book Trafalgar: Countdown to Battle 1803-1805, this apocalyptic showdown was actually the result of a strategy laid out by the British Admiralty two years earlier, when Napoleon issued orders for the creation of what would have become the largest army flotilla ever before assembled. The Emperor's aim was to invade the British Isles with a force of over 167,000 men conveyed aboard nearly 2,400 vessels--his plan was successfully thwarted not because of the tactical genius of Lord Nelson on a single day of battle, but rather because of the brilliant strategy and remarkable perseverance of the hitherto unsung hero Admiral Sir William Cornwallis. Until now the facts surrounding this unprecedented military buildup have been largely ignored or misinterpreted by historians. In fashioning his brilliant and gripping reinterpretation of the events leading to the famous battle, Alan Schom has mined the rich and previously unexplored archives of England and France to place Trafalgar in its true historical scope and context. He shows convincingly how Cornwallis (brother of Lord Cornwallis who surrendered to Washington at Yorktown) conducted a brilliant blockade of the French fleet both at Brest and off Spain, effectively ruining Napoleon's invasion plans. He also demonstrates the importance of Prime Minister William Pitt who mustered a powerful army to defend England's shores, while reinvigorating a run-down and demoralized Royal Navy. And by letting them speak across the years from the journals and memoirs they left behind, Schom brings a rich and varied cast of characters to life--from politicians, admirals, and generals, to the common soldiers and sailors of both sides. This book is far more than just a naval history. It tells the compelling story of the centuries-old French-British rivalry as it appproached its culmination at the dawn of the nineteenth century. Marvelously written, Trafalgar brings a freshness to an episode often recounted but never before fully understood.Customer Reviews:
Background to Trafalgar.......2004-07-08
One good aspect of this book was that it gives a limelight to William Cornwallis, a hardy and highly skilled British admiral who held everything together and helped set up the situation for Horatio Nelson to take over and win the battle and campaign. Cornwallis have often been overlooked and shortchanged by many historians who previously have given him only lip service before moving on to glorious Nelson and his deeds.
One bad aspects of this book was a near unchallenged disrespect and disdain the author have for Napoleon. What did this French Emperor do to Schom's ancestors that made the author so hostile? From what I read, it seem that entire defeat of the French fleet lies squarely on Napoleon's shoulders and if a French cabin boy trip over himself and began to shed tears, it was Napoleon's fault!! This author hates Napoleon to the bone.
But overall, it was an interesting reading of the Trafalgar campaign, easy to read, nicely researched and presented (except when Napoleon get involve) and overall, a justice to Cornwallis.
If you read one book about Trafalgar, this should be it........1998-09-17

For those interested in Napoleonic Wars, and Naval history.......2001-01-26
The story itself is gripping. Captain Hewson was a Naval officer who was captured off the coast of France just after the failure of the treaty of Amiens in 1803 - and thus he became one of Napoleon's Prisoners. His march to his 'prison' in the central France town of Verdun was gruelling and he almost didn't survive. His description of his life in Verdun, the conditions and his further escape attempts are left unedited but Brett-James provides helpful footnote to help explain things.
There have been several books on British prisoner's of wars over the years - Roger Boutet de Monvel and Mrs Elton have both written collective stories of several prisoners or escapers. They are also both quite good - but out of print now of course. They both also lack the wonderful advantage this book has, its illustrations. They are drawn from many contemporary sources and they just bought the whole thing alive me for me.

The Amiens Truce: Britain and Bonaparte 1801 - 1803
John D. Grainger Manufacturer: Boydell Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1843830418 |
Book Description
In 1801 Britain and Bonaparte made an armistice, which became the Treaty of Amiens in March 1802. In the brief period of peace which followed, British attitudes underwent a major change, so that when war began again in May 1803 there was little or no dissent from the view that the war had to be fought to a finish and Bonaparte's power destroyed. This was partly the result of Bonaparte's underhand methods during negotiations; but it was also due to the conclusion reached by the many British visitors to France during the interval of peace that Bonaparte was extremely dangerous, anger at his stealthy political advances in Europe and America, and outrage at his detention and imprisonment of British civilians when war began again. The attitude of the British government headed by Henry Addington, and in particular the diplomatic methods of the Foreign Secretary Lord Hawkesbury (later the Prime Minister Lord Liverpool) were decisive in countering Bonaparte's methods; they receive their due in this first detailed examination of events, based on original materials.

The Campaign of Trafalgar 1803-1805 (Chatham Pictories Histories)
National Maritime Museum (Great Britain) Manufacturer: Chatham Publishing ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 1861760280 |
Product Description
Trafalgar, the most famous and most strategically significant victory in the age of sail, was not an isolated event. Rather it was the culmination of a campaign that began as soon as war was resumed in May 1803 and aimed ultimately at the invasion of Great Britain. To this end Napoleon attempted by ruse and elaborately disguised manoeuvres to bring his scattered and blockaded squadrons together for long enough to give him command of the Channel, which he fondly believed was all that was necessary to ensure a successful landing. Therefore, this period becomes a perfect demonstration of the workings of seapower and reveals that, however great a strategic genius on land, Napoleon never really grasped the principles of British maritime defense, gleaned as it was from over two hundred years experience. This is not to say that the invasion threat was treated lightly, although some of the rumored devices belong to the world of science fiction on the other hand the anti-invasion operations included the first use of such futuristic weapons as torpedoes and rockets. Little of the naval warfare of this period is not in some way connected with the main campaign, and this volume is devoted to the great wars of 1793-1815, charts all the major naval events of 1803 to 1805, including Americas first full-bloodied naval war, with the Barbary States.
