nice try.......2006-11-11

Bollas has written some brilliant books of non-fiction. This try at fiction is much weaker, and the characters are little more than characatures or vehicles for ideas. Still I believe Bollas is to be commended for trying a new form and some of his usual wonderful insights still shine through. The book is a quick and easy read for those who may not want to devote the time to his more weighty and far more interesting works.

Darkness Illuminates Life.......2005-09-10

This book contains "Life as an Object", a paper that has already become a classic in psychoanalytic circles. In this chapter and throughout the book, Bollas uses fictional characters, exaggerated plots, and sprightly humour to illuminate hidden areas of psychic life. He dares his reader to contemplate life as a "thing in itself", something that we are all in relationship to. Through stories of the main character's ("the psychoanalyst's") life, Bollas imperceptibly touches his reader, creating eerie moments of emotional discovery without a clear trace. The experience of reading "Dark at the end of the tunnel" is an encounter with life, and like life, the book is often difficult to bear. As one journeys with "the psychoanalyst" through exchanges with friends, colleagues and patients, one confronts depressing moods: fear of dying, awareness of human frailty, social psychosis, and loss of faith, among others. However, representing the full array that life can offer, one will also be impressed by the hilarious, clever, beautiful and the deeply evocative.

Very enjoyable.......2007-03-15

The aspect of Griffith's work that makes it so worthwhile is its hearkening to the great tradition of blending compelling narrative prose style with factual content. This style has largely disappeared due to increased specialization within academia on one hand and a reliance on simplicity to reach lay readers by popular writers on the other. Griffith assumes his readers are familiar with the Revolution thus enriching his book with subtlety and eloquence missing from a standard overview like Middlekauff's redundant The Glorious Cause.
If one is new to learning about this period I wouldn't read this first. However, after youve scaled through enough Wood, Ketcham etc., pick this gem up and appreciate an old fashioned gripping story.

Fabulous research of a world changing time.......2006-11-09

Not having an real idea of the events of the time as we did not cover it at school I thoroughly enjoyed the research and well written history of the War. It was well detailed particularly covering both the British and American political issues, althought it felt like the author tired and wound up the final years very quickly. Dispite that a very good account and an relatively easy read for a subject like this. Thank you Author for the reseacrh which was obviously huge !.Written by a Kiwi(New Zealander) discovering American history for the first time.

An extremely well written and comprehensive volume on growing estrangement between Great Britain and the American colonies, and on the course of the Revolutionary War. The narrative flows easily from the viewpoint of the British to that of the Americans, enabling the reader to see both sides of the conflict.

Strangely paced.......2004-03-02

The book is actually quite good, however it is hard to understand to what audience he aims it. At times the book seems to assume a good level of previous familiarity with the American Revolution from which he would add a greater military and political background than you were familiar with (specially a more foreign background which is rather nice). However, at other points he changes and quotes the Declaration of independence and some of its writing for a whole chapter.
Probably a good book for people who are not historically illiterate, but are also not historians. Bad book as an introduction, probably a good second book on the American Revolution.

Riveting!.......2002-07-30

This is by far the best book on the American revolution I have ever read. The author incorporates extensive excerpts from documents and correspondence of all the major participants of the war. I really got a sense of the true thoughts, feelings, and motivations of Washington, Benedict Arnold, Franklin, and so on. Griffith's research was extremely thorough and his insights enlightening. The British point of view is well presented and balanced as well. Eminently readable! Highest recommendation for anyone interested in how and why the revolution took place from a scholarly yet entertaining author.

Excellent Resource.......2007-03-06

This handy sized book (10" x 6.5" x .5ish") makes a great general resource of information related to the Vikings and their period of history. As one who finds history easier to comprehend when plentiful maps are handy, I find the historical atlas a wonderful class of book in general. The Penguin historical atlases are smaller than many I have, which makes them a bit more convenient to use. The maps in this atlas are easy to understand and do help shed light on the activities and movements of the Vikings.

I did find the approach to the text in this book a bit redundant, but this seems to have been an intentional choice on the part of the author, who presents a block of information prior to the maps in a given section of the book, and then re-covers this material in the text accompanying each map at essentially the same level of detail. I'm not sure I would have done it this way, but, as I use the atlas more, perhaps this format will grow on me.

All in all a very useful and well produced resource. Many thanks to all those involved in researching and producing it.

Best Resource for Beginning Scandophiles.......2007-02-09

This atlas is one of the best possible collections of our knowledge about early Scandinavia. Although the term "Viking" is in the title, hopefully by reading this book you will learn that there was a whole lot more to primitive, expansionist Scandia. The book also does a great job of talking about all the players in Norden, rather than just the traditional trio. I'm a Scandinavian Studies student in college and this book has been an exceptional resource for multiple papers.

An excellent summary of Viking history.......2007-01-18

As an amateur reasearcher and a keen fan of Viking history, I consider this book to be one of the best summaries of the Viking era. The text is well edited, to-the-point, yet manages to contain all important historical details. The illustrations and maps complement the text's material with further graphic information very well, causing the book to be one of the most interesting reads on Vikings I have ever come across. The writing not only deals with major military events of the Viking era, but discloses details on everyday life, rural and urban settlements, trade activites and much more of medieval Scandinavia.

To readers who are interested in overall Viking history but simply cannot decide which book to start with, this work is an ideal choice.

I found this book to be excellent for my requirements - it provided information clearly and was not overwhelming in detail. The maps are excellent. I recommend this book to everyone interested in Viking history. It makes an excellent reference book to have in your library.

A visual history of Vikings through maps.......2005-08-28

Vikings, which stands for "raiders", were strong shipbuilders and sailors, and their fame became soon known to their victims around Europe. Their brutality was recorded in chronicles from their victims (literate clergymen), and in part their ill fame is probably the result of bad press of that time.
History needs maps. An historical atlas is very useful if a reader wants to keep track of all Viking raids and pillages around the coasts of northern Europe, but also as far today Russia and Central Asia. Vikings gave the name to Russia, being Rus the name Finns gave to Swedish Vikings in that area, which means "oarsmen". So this historical atlas provides plenty of information through maps and entertaining captions that help to understand how far-reaching Viking influence was. However, this atlas, as a previous reviewer has noted, is too centered on Viking presence in British islands and Ireland.
At the beginning of the X century, Charles III of France gave Normandy (the land of Norse) to the Vikings, who in turn offered their allegiance. These settled Vikings became known as Normans, who took part to new adventures: William, the Duke of Normandy, led the conquest of England, Robert the Guiscard seized Sicily from Muslims in the Mediterranean, and took part in the Crusades. This by-product of the Viking saga is almost completely left out.
All in all, this atlas provides a visual history of Vikings, that is appropriate and easy to read for students and the general reader. Recommended to all who share an interest in Medieval history of Northern Europe.

I love this book. It has lots of maps and illustrations. Best of all it covers the entire gamut of the Viking universe. It is a wonderful resource for getting your head around the big picture of the Viking age. I have researched Viking Age history for years now and this is one of the BEST books I have ever found

About AD 800, mysterious long-ships made their first appearance along the North Sea coast of Britain. From Shetland to the Thames, these raiding ships appeared out of the sea mists, carrying warriors so fierce that no one could stand against them. This is a very attractive book, with lots of pictures and descriptions, and very interesting text. The only disadvantages are the lack of useful maps, chronological data and more complete information regarding family lines. Still, it is a treasure of a book that is hard to put down.

I Love this book.......2003-02-03

I recently purchased this book and It describes everything you've ever wanted to know. The book starts with pre-viking scandanavia and then goes on to describe how they live, religion, boats, places traveled, warriors, the rise and fall, ect. If you love vikings, you have to get this book. The pictures are beautiful and Angust Konstam is a very well researched author. I also recommend Historical Atlas of the Celtic World.
