5 out of 5 stars This book helped me get two 4.0's!!!!!!!!!.......2005-08-18

I didn't have a background in accounting (I had finished a BA in History not too long before going back to school)prior to reading the book. I thought the book was well laid out and made it easy to learn. One thing the book did lack was the answers to the questions so you could at least check your final answer although it does have quick check answers on some of the problems. Even though I knew nothing about accounting prior to the 2 classes that used the book, and I took them as intensive A term and B term classes during the summer while working full time I still managed to get 4.0's in both classes. Because of that I would have to recommend this book. If I could get through 16 chapters of material in 7 weeks and earn those grades then it has to have something to do with the book!

    Book Description

Financial Mathematics is an exciting, emerging field of application. The five sets of course notes in this book provide a bird's eye view of the current "state of the art" and directions of research. For graduate students it will therefore serve as an introduction to the field while reseachers will find it a compact source of reference. The reader is expected to have a good knowledge of the basic mathematical tools corresponding to an introductory graduate level and sufficient familiarity with probabilistic methods, in particular stochastic analysis.

The powers conferred upon the police are not widely understood. The study of these police powers forms a significant part of many law courses. This book should prove helpful to a wide readership, including new members of the police service, and those studying civil liberties and constitutional law. The commentary is supported by diagrams in order to promote better understanding of the subject.

          Book Description

This conference was dedicated to the memory of the great scientist and teacher I Ya Pomeranchuk on the occasion of his 90th birthday. It was multidisciplinary and covered those fields of physics where Pomeranchuk made outstanding contributions — including high energy physics, quantum field theory, theory of liquid helium, condensed matter physics, physics of electromagnetic processes in matter, and astrophysics. Most of the plenary talks and reports were given by Pomeranchuk's former students and coworkers.

The proceedings volume provides an excellent review of some important areas of modern physics and reflects the Pomeranchuk school's contributions to modern physics. It is useful for graduate students, lecturers and researchers in high energy physics, quantum field theory and condensed matter physics.

            Book Description

Geomatics is an amalgam of methods, algorithms and practices in handling data referred to the Earth by informatic tools. This book is an attempt to identify and rationally organize the statistical-mathematical methods which are common in many fields where geomatics is applied, like geodesy, geophysics and, in particular, the field of inverse problems and image analysis as it enters into photogrammetry and remote sensing.
These lecture notes aim at creating a bridge between people working in different disciplines and making them aware of a common methodological basis.

              Book Description

This textbook connects an undergraduate course in physics with modern science and technology. The first part of the book gives an overview of "hot" directions in modern physics and technology. The second part contains problems which are related to those directions. Where necessary, the problems have detailed solutions. The text also includes a brief review of undergraduate physics.

A huge chasm has developed between modern science and undergraduate education. The result of this chasm is that students who are graduating from college are unable to exploit the many opportunities offered by modern science and technology. Consequently, student interest in undergraduate physics is very low. The authors purpose to try to bridge this chasm between modern science and technology and undergraduate education.

Modern science and technology widely uses the methods of classical physics, but these modern applications are not reflected in the problems on physics often suggested to students. Solving practical problems is a very effective way to inform students about contemporary science, to show the important relationships between modern and classical physics, and to prepare them for future activity in the modern technological environment. The authors have prepared a set of problems based on some of the latest development in science and technology which can be solved using the classical physics accessible in a standard undergraduate program.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing Wrong with Dorfman.......2007-06-09

Every once in a while, you pick up a book that you simply can't put down. John Blumenthal's What's Wrong with Dorfman? is just such a book.

The first line grabs you. The rest of the lines make you grab back. You can't wait to learn more about Martin Dorfman. What you discover is a fascinating character built on flaws and propelled by doubts.

Martin's a hypochondriac and, naturally, nearly everyone knows it but him. He does get to balance the scales a bit. His offbeat comments hit the mark every time--if only with the readers. The other characters in his world can't quite tune into his way of thinking, with one exception.

Delilah Foster understands him like no one else. She's just as sick as he is; there's nothing physically wrong with her, either. Compared to her, however, Martin's a raging optimist.

It seems appropriate that Martin is a screenwriter. With each new character, I find myself casting the movie version of this engaging novel. When I "read" Martin Dorfman and Delilah Foster, I "see" Ben Stiller and Janeane Garofalo. Martin's wife starts looking like Uma Thurman and his parents like Judd Hirsch and Olympia Dukakis.

But don't wait for the movie. Read the book. Today.

Then go stand in line for the movie--it ought to be terrific.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious and Entertaining!.......2004-07-29

"What's Wrong with Dorfman?" explores the issues full-time screenwriter and hypochondriac Martin Dorfman faces as he encounters his past and his neurosis. Will Dorfman's script ever make it through the Hollywood runaround and onto the big screen? Perhaps, that is, IF he can put his imaginary illnesses aside for five minutes. While, at times, Blumenthal's characters give you a neurosis of your very own from their constant worry, "What's Wrong with Dorfman?" is a hilarious and entertaining read. Blumenthal's writing is witty and fresh and his characters are enthralling. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

5 out of 5 stars intelligent very amusing tale.......2004-01-14

Life is collapsing for Los Angeles screenwriter Martin Dorfman. In his mind the end of days have arrived as the signs are obvious since film producers ignore his efforts and his agent refuses to answer his calls or return them. He feels like death as a mysterious disease attacks his body; neither his doctor, other physicians, an herbalist nor a New Age "chiropractic allergist" can identify the illness let alone cure it. After paying out thousands of bucks his mentally aching spouse thinks Martin is a hypochondriac and suggests he visit a psychiatrist.

Martin agrees to try her more radical solution to his physical woes by seeing a psychiatrist. The shrink's diagnosis is that Martin suffers from screenwriter neuroses bordering on psychosis. If he wants to be cured he must find new employment. Psychosomatic illnesses may cause pain, but not as much as not writing scripts even if rejection seems the norm right now.

WHAT'S WRONG WITH DORFMAN is an intelligent very amusing tale starring an intriguing protagonist whose one-liners would make the novel fun to read, but also provides a serious undertone that catalogues the book as a not to miss tale. The support cast adds jocular "sincerity" as they stereotype their treatment of Dorfman. The tale cleverly reflects on inheriting ancestral mental baggage such as Dorfman knows he has all types of diseases because his father the doctor described the symptoms to him when he was a child. Fans of an amusing look at childhood environmental impact on the adult will appreciate WHAT'S WRONG WITH DORFMAN. One warning: don't run to see your doctor because what Dorman has is contagiously funny.

5 out of 5 stars I see Steve Martin in the title role........2003-10-25

Having read the book again in its new incarnation as a St. Martin's paperback, all I can say is: Blumenthal is a genius of a comic writer! Yes, perfect for the movies, and should get done one day. Yes, just like ABOUT SCHMIDT, this DORFMAN book can do well on the screen. Written by a screenwriter, who has the touch already, why not?

But it might take 10-15 years for this to get made, and that's a shame. It should be in the theaters now, what with SARS and bioterrorism in the news and on our radar screens.

Some savvy scout in Hollywood should be reading Blumethal's book right now. It's a natural for the movies. My guess is that it WILL get done, sooner or later. i hope in my lifetime, as I am slowly dying myself! oi!

                What's Wrong With Dorfman?
                By
                John Blumenthal

Did you like The Wedding Singer or The In-Laws? This wonderfully funny and poignant novel looks at a man's middle age crises with the same kind of humor. I can see it with Adam Sandler in the title role. Or even Hugh Grant. Fast and entertaining to read, there's a continuous play on words. In the vein of "disease of the week" paranoia Martin tries to figure out what's gone terribly wrong.

A favorite quote from the book is:

"It is close to midnight and Ursula and the kids are asleep. The house is quiet. I am standing alone in the kitchen, holding one of the Little Pink Pills between my fingers, turning it, observing it, wondering if it will really be my magic bullet. Or if, like all the other cockamamie cures and nostrums and panaceas, it will go down as a failure. Do I have faith in Dr. Igor? Frankly, no."

Trust me. You will laugh and you'll identify with Martin and cheer him on.

The definitive single-volume reference work for students of World War II, I. C. B. Dear's 1,400-page compendium provides a wealth of detail on matters that standard histories often gloss over or pass over altogether. For example, Dear covers the Night and Fog Decree, which called for the execution of any civilians committing crimes against German forces in occupied territories, as well as the Battle of the Courland Peninsula, in which Red Army soldiers overwhelmed the last German forces in the Baltic and seized Latvia and Lithuania for the Soviet Union. This is a fine book to browse through while watching Bataan or The Longest Day, or to have on hand to provide background material for other World War II-related reading.

                Book Description

I have both the current and first edition of this book (in hardcover). As far as I can tell, the new edition is only shorter because it uses a smaller typeface, allowing several more words per line.

However, the new edition is also a bit easier to read despite the smaller size, because the new edition uses a glossy paper and the text seems more sharply defined on the page. This is particularly noticeable in the text of the maps, which I have struggled to read in the first edition, but seem clearer in the new edition.

As an aside, I agree with the general view that this is the single best reference book on World War II. I can't really tell what is changed in the new edition, although it may just be minor corrections, since the several longer articles I have compared seem identical.

                4 out of 5 stars A Cautionary Note.......2006-09-11

I'm a fan of the first edition (1995) of this fine book: I'm a World War Two buff, and this is the best one-volume reference book on World War Two that I know of. So why would I give only four stars to the revised edition of 2005? Here's why. Prospective purchasers of the revised 2005 edition might like to know that it is 1,039 pages long, whereas the first edition of 1995 was 1,343 pages long. That's a loss of 304 pages, representing 23% of the material in the first edition---a considerable loss.

In the case of The Oxford Companion to Music, there was a beautiful, lavishly illustrated edition of 2,017 pages of 1983; it was replaced by a revised edition in 2002 that had 1,434 pages---a whopping loss of almost 600 pages of material. In this case I know what I'm talking about, because I have both editions: the 2002 edition represents a substantial abridgement and cheapening of the 1986 edition; I doubt that anyone who had the chance to compare the two would choose the newer edition.

I don't know if the same thing is going on with this Oxford Companion to World War Two (I don't have the new edition at hand to compare the two), but the loss of 23% of the material in the first edition, and my experience with The Oxford Companion to Music described above, would incline me to approach the new edition with caution.

5 out of 5 stars The Facts about WWII without the Spin.......2006-06-26

This is a wonderful one volume encyclopedia of WWII, covering all fronts, participants, and major events. This outstanding work is an absolute must have for any serious student of World War II in my opinion. More than 100 scholars and professional historians contributed to this book. This work is certainly detailed, well written, and well researched, but it is not comprehensive (how could one describe WWII in one volume of about 1000 pages?). I think the description of this book as a `Companion' is entirely appropriate, it has been my companion for more than ten years now. I've flipped through pages of this book several times a week for the past ten years and (effectively) read the entire book through at least half a dozen times. This book is filled with an unbelievable amount of information. There are major sections on each of the combatants that include discussions about the military, political, economic, and cultural developments and changes that took place throughout the war. All the major battles are discussed, as well as people, equipment, and events. In my opinion, this is not a reference book, it is a learning book. If you already know a great deal about the Battle of Kursk or Uboats, for example, you will not find much new here. You will find, however, a wealth of information about all aspects of the war that you probably weren't even aware of. I have no complaints about this book and would consider it a bargain at twice the price. My only warning is that this book is probably not suited to someone who has only passing interest in World War II; if Steven Ambrose is your idea of a good historian, you probably aren't going to like this Companion.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Overall Reference Books.......2005-10-26

One of the definitive histories of World War II. As you would expect from a book published by Oxford, it is as complete as was possible to make it, some examples:

Number of minor landing craft produced in the US -- 42,524
Number of Dutch forced laborers -- 174,358
What was Force J -- amphibious assault force used in the Dieppe raid
Number of US Aircraft carriers -- 152

The book is in dictionary or encyclopedia format with entries arranged in A to Z format. It has some 1750 entries. Virtually every aspect of the war is covered: political, strategic, forces, campaigns, battles, equipment and many more.

If there is any single complaint about the book it is its British centric view. Some rather minor British operations, for instance, are given as much space as some fairly major US operations in the pacific. You may also want to have an American encyclopedia on your book shelf.

The books major strength has to be the completeness of its entries. There is material here that simply has not been printed anywhere else that I can find.

                5 out of 5 stars The War -- A to Z .......2005-08-10

A book with the word "Cambridge" or "Oxford" in the title is guaranteed to be authoritative, written by top-notch scholars, contain excellent maps and charts, and be as dryasdust. The "Oxford Companion to World War II" is no exception. Within these 1,000 pages is an enormous amount of information on countries, people, events, and battles of WW II.

One can, for example, look up "Riom Trial" and get a two paragraph description of a trial of those held responsible for the fall of France. Or a 4-line description of "Force Viper" a small British marine force in Burma. Unfortunately, the selection of the topics worthy of a separate entry was more than a little Anglo-centric. The US Marine Corps Raiders were far more important that "Force Viper" but for information about them one is referred to a section of the article on the USA. Likewise, the Soviet Union is slighted. The Raid at Dieppe gets 2 columns of attention; the Battle of Stalingrad gets less than 4 columns. Was Stalingrad more than twice as important as Dieppe? Yes! It was a thousand times more important.

The space devoted to description of battles often seems arbitrary rather than rational. The Normandy invasion gets 12 columns of attention; the second largest amphibious operation of the war, Okinawa, gets one column. That's a travesty. Midway -- the crucial turning point in the war for for the United States -- gets one measly column of attention. Another travesty. India, a British colony, gets eight pages; the battle of Iwo Jima only one column.

The most valuable parts of the book are the numerous charts illustrating nearly every facet of the war. For example, on page 480 is a chart of Japanese production during the war including tanks, planes, and ships. On page 306 is a list of the aggregate strength and equipment of a US infantry divison: 14,253 men, 2,012 vehicles, 58 band members, 13 chaplins, 157 30 caliber machine guns, etc. On page 117 is described and illustrated "the corkscrew maneuver," a defensive strategy for bombers under attack by fighters. These are samples of the gems of information found in this book that would be difficult to find elsewhere.

The above complaints notwithstanding "The Oxford Companion to World War II" is a superb reference book and every serious student of WW II should have it on his bookshelf.

5 out of 5 stars A unique and invaluable worldview.......2002-08-07

Dr. Bram was a professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva New York for close to 30 years. He obtained legendary status at the college as a professor of immense intellectual capacities who had the rare ability to see the "big picture" while drawing on an astounding depth of knowledge in multiple and diverse disciplines such as psychology, biology, intellectual history, semiotics, philosophy and literature. For those unable to attend Marvin's classes this is an invaluable introduction to his unique worldview. Dr. Bram's take on the personal and social "disequilibrium" that has plagued humanity since the rise of Sumer and Greece posits theories of human development and social evolution unlike any I have ever read. However, at no point in time does the Recovery of the West's discussion of our social and personal malaise degenerate into a diatribe against modern culture. Instead Dr. Bram highlight's the positive and negative aspects of the West's historical development and brilliantly juxtaposes our positives and negatives primarily with those of "equilibrium" totemic societies.

It is difficult to compare Dr. Bram's work to any other books. However if you appreciate the work of Margaret J. Wheatley, Erich Fromm, Neil Postman or Dorthy Lee you are on the right track. After reading Dr. Bram's work you will have a whole new perspective about James Joyce's Finnegans Wake, T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone, or for that matter the work of Aristotle.

Dr. Bram's thesis is unquestionably controversial and the ambitious scope of the Recovery of the West may subject the book to the criticism of "traditional scholars". It is precisely this scope and ambition however that make this a must read. Dr. Bram is positing a unique way to view the world and our relationship to it. In doing so he provides for the reader an invaluable and potentially life altering experience. Read the book. It is a stunningly provocative and unconventional piece of work.

A reprint edition of a 1966 biography of foremost astronomer George Ellery Hale, who laid much of the foundation of modern astrophysics and observational cosmology. He's best known for the planning and building of the 200-inch Hale Telescope of the Palomar Mountain Observatory. This book features a new introduction by Allan Sandage and an index not included in the original work. Since the history of astrophysics is mostly undocumented, this work provides a rare look at Hale's scientific achievements: his invention of the spectroheliograph, his discovery of the magnetic nature of sunspots, and his legendary leadership in founding the Yerkes, Mount Wilson, and Palomar Mountain Observatories.

5 out of 5 stars "An eminent man of science".......2001-09-16

The number of influential astronomers whose last names begin with "h" is truly amazing. Hipparchus, Halley, Herschel (the elder and junior), Humason, and Hubble. Not as well known, though no less important in his many contributions to the science, is the subject of Helen Wright's admirable biography, George Ellery Hale.

Hale is perhaps justifiably he is remembered as the builder of giant telescopes. He built three of the greatest of all time, and spearheaded a fourth - the Palomar 200 inch - though he did not live to see it completed and named in his honor. However, Hale's considerable life's work goes much further. He was a groundbreaking solar astronomer, inventing new instruments and methods of studying the sun's activity. His invention of the spectroheliograph and subsequent discovery of the magnetic field lines of sunspots nearly earned him a Nobel prize (Hale was nominated for the Nobel prize in physics by many other recipients of that award - including Millikan. Wright repeats the story that Alfred Nobel did not like astronomers and wanted no astronomer to win that award, a bias which was not overcome until the 1970's). The Nobel Prize was the only major scientific honor that eluded Hale. He won the Copley Medal of the Royal Society of London, the Janssen Medal of the Paris Academy of Sciences (twice), the Rumford Medal, the Gold Medal of the RAS, the Draper Medal of the NAS, the Bruce Medal, the list goes on.

Wright's work is organized by project rather than strictly chronologically. She details the founding of the Astrophysical Journal; his central role in the formation of the International Astronomical Union and the American Astronomical Society. Another chapter is devoted to his vision for the transformation of the Throop Institute of Pasadena into the venerable California Institute of Technology and attracting top-notch talent to its teaching and research staff. She spends considerable time detailing his network of friends and colleagues around the formation of the the National Academy of Sciences and the National Research Council. One comes away with the distinct impression that Hale was a central and essential figure in burgeoning scientific establishment of the first half of the century.

The degree to which he was esteemed by his colleagues is clear from the fact that he was offered the presidency of MIT and the position of Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution. He turned down both. He also eventually resigned as director of the Mt. Wilson Observatory, both for health reasons and to allow him time to return to his own solar observatory.

Though her work is perhaps slanted toward Hale's organizational and building activities, she also makes it clear throughout that his true love always remained that of plumbing the depths of stellar evolution, and he was always anxious to return to his own solar research.

Though Wright does not explicitly point it out, it is implicit that Hale's greatest achievement was bridging the gap between the observational astronomy of the 19th century (and before) to the 20th century study of physics and physical phenomenon. More than any other individual, Hale recognized that astronomy and physics made the perfect marriage, and he pioneered methods to bring the physical laboratory and the astronomer's telescope together.

As good as it is, and Wright's is one of the best scientific biographies available, she does stand guilty of starting a terrible misconception about Hale's mental state. It is generally well known that Hale suffered from nervous breakdowns that were at times completely incapacitating. Wright gets the credit for starting the story about Hale's supposed little "elf" that visited and talked to him, and who has come to represent his illness. Historians William Sheehan and Donald Osterbrock trace it to a misunderstanding of one of Hale's letters to a friend and note that the "'demon' (the word he actually used) was a metaphor, referring either to his conscience or to his depressed mood (like Winston Churchill's 'black dog'), and certainly not an apparition." ...This book easily earns its five-star rating. It is simply one of the best scientific biographies available.

An excellent book that deals with the profoundly tragic issue of whaling; man has done much to destroy nature, and the plight of the whale is one of the most dismaying aspects of man's greed and arrogance; over the century, many species were nearly hunted to extinction, and even today some countries persist in whaling, fully aware of the consequences.
