Book Description

This personal finance book introduces readers to the concepts, tools, and applications of personal finance and investments. It builds on the 15 Axioms of Personal Finance, and helps individuals develop an intuitive understanding not only of the financial planning process, but also the logic that drives it. In order to leave a lasting impression, this book concentrates on the fundamentals and underlying principles of personal finance, rather than focusing on equations and specific tools which are more easily forgotten. Chapter coverage includes how to prepare for the financial future and highlights some of the important decisions to be faced. The book covers pertinent topics that relate to getting a job and turning that job into a successful career. It also provides easy to follow advice from an expert CPA that can be used as a learning tool in such areas as purchasing a car, getting insurance, investing in mutual funds, etc. For anyone looking for a guide to personal finance and financial planning.

This book was sent in a timely manner and was in excellent condition as stated.

5 out of 5 stars Superb text on a vital topic- basics everyone should know.......2005-03-04

Personally, I think that we would all be better off if we spent more time in our education process teaching people about the realities of their economic lives. This is especially true of their choice of careers, managing those resources, and preparing for their "golden years". I could nominate a few topics I think we could cease teaching in order to have room for the necessary classes to provide people with real life financial management skills that can have a direct impact on the improvement of all aspects of their lives.

This book, "Personal Finance - Turning Money into Wealth" is a fantastic tool for students and ANY interested reader. I wish everyone would work through this book (or one very much like it). While it is never too late to develop these skills, the younger a person gets a plan for their economic life in place, the more power it has and the better off they will be long term.

I like the way Prof. Keown emphasizes basic principles (he has 15 of them) and planning. He begins the book by providing the foundation of financial planning, teaching the student how to measure their financial health and using that to inform their plan, understanding the Time Value of Money (a topic so vital that no one should graduate high school without knowing, in my opinion), and the basics of tax planning.

The author then provides some great information on managing money by understanding the realities of cash and liquid assets, credit cards (open credit) and the traps it represents, using consumer loans in PLANNED BORROWING (another important topic that is almost unknown to most consumers because of the misuse of open credit), and buying homes and automobiles.

I really enjoyed his next discussion on insurance. He talks about the various kinds of insurance, the kinds of protection they provide at what costs, and especially the situations in which buying insurance makes sense and when it does not.

The section on managing investments is good, solid, but BASIC information. Anyone doing anything beyond a few basic retirement plans will need to study other materials. This section is the one where I have a tiny quibble with the author. He differentiates investing and speculation by saying that investing involves putting money in assets that provide returns - stocks, bonds, etc - but that speculating is putting money in things like baseball cards that only have a price based on what others are willing to pay. I sort of understand what I think he is trying to say.

However, all investing is in some sense speculating. The buyer and seller have different views of the future (speculating about the future) and so they make opposite choices at a certain price. Either of them would change their view, presumably, at some other price. Stocks do not have a built in return and many do not pay dividends and too often nowadays their residual value is zero. Too often people buy stocks simply because they are going up (the greater fool theory) and get badly burned as we saw in the Internet Bubble collapse in early 2000. In any case, the caution the author advocates is sufficient and sound. I am just concerned that others use the terms "investment" and "speculation" differently than the author and might confuse those trying to enter the fray for the first time.

This fine text ends with a discussion of life cycle issues such as retirement planning, estate planning, and how all the pieces studied fit together into the grand plan.

The author also provides online helps such as problems, quizzes, and especially many useful spreadsheets that the student can not only use, but study to help them build their own that will be tailored to the student's specific situation. There is also a workbook with the basics of using a financial calculator and the worksheets called for in the text.

This is a superb text on a vital topic. Strongly Recommended for general readers as well as students in a class on this subject (which EVERY college student should be REQUIRED to take - or pass out of by test).

    Book Description

In this book, Frenkel assesses the gains and setbacks of financial sectors in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia and Uruguay. The studies look first at the structure, costs, regulations and efficiency of the financial systems themselves, taking into account characteristics specific to each country. Book Description

Few United States citizens conceive of their country as an empire, but, as the contributors to Masters of War convincingly argue, the U.S. legacy of military power runs long and deep. Often mobilized in the name of spreading democracy, maintaining international order, and creating the conditions for economic self-determination, constantly expanding global U.S. military power is difficult to characterize as anything but an imperialism bent on global domination.
However, at the same time that the U.S. government hawks rhetoric of human rights and national sovereignty, its dominion has begun breeding widespread resistance and opposition likely to make the twenty-first century an era marked by sustained, and generally unanticipated, "blowback." Presenting a wide range of essays by some of the anti-war movement's most vocal and incisive critics, Masters of War reminds us that worldwide economic and military dominance has its price, both globally and domestically.

The Imperial German Army Air Service of World War I grew from just 500 men in 1914 to 80,000 in 1918, inventing in the process a wholly new form of warfare. The exploits of the first fighter ‘aces’ have been widely celebrated, and have tended to overshadow the other, equally important branches of the fighting air forces – the reconnaissance and ground attack units, the airships and strategic bombers. This concise but fact-packed guide to both the Army and Naval Air Services – their command, organization, strength, training, support services andoperations – offers a morebalanced picture, while giving the heroes of the Jagdstaffeln their full due. Uniforms and flying clothing are described in detail, and illustrated with rare photographs and meticulous colour plates.

i always wondered why balloons were used for obsevation when by 1917 aircraft were so available, and less vulnerable than a balloon and now i know. ballons were quick to put up and pull down with electric winches and gave a more dimensional picture. No need to wait for a plane to arrive after a call is placed. Also i sometimes confused a balloon with an airship, now that's cleared up too.the pictures and descriptions in this book when describing the high altitude airships, left me with "frost on my nose and chest and glandular congestion."There was a good paragraph about the famous medal "the Blue Max",and how its awarding favored officers over enlisted and may have actually been more of a disruption to troop morale than a boost. The author states although that the germans saw the air force as a tactical and not a strategic force during WW1 and this somewhat hampered them during WW2.Really from my limited knowledge of the "Treaty of Versailles"what hampered the German Air Force in WW2 was the clauses in the treaty that prevented Germany from developing a strategic wing. One clause states specifically"No military aircraft".I am sure that any nation that could develop the types of aircraft that the Germans made during WW1 would surely understand the strategic value of it.In technology a disadvantage of even a year can put a country way behind with only scissors and paste to play"catch-up".This book is an asset to the Osprey Series.

                                        Book Description

This book is an unprecedented synthesis of the literature on state development that explains how and why the contours of the British state have changed over the last three centuries. Ranging in scope from the Glorious Revolution to New Labour, it provides a fluent and comprehensive introduction to the changing shape and role of the British state.Philip Harling's main theme is the dramatic broadening of the state's functions and its cost over the last three centuries, and most noticeably over the last one. As late as 1870, most Britons assumed that the only tasks that should be entrusted to the central government were issues such as the defence of the realm, the maintenance of public order, and the provision of basic amenities such as street lighting. Today, they assume that these tasks ought to extend - and of course they do extend - to the provision of education, retirement benefits, unemployment insurance, health care, and a host of other services. Harling takes a number of historical factors into account in his assessment of the broadening trajectory of the state, such as the enormous expansion of the state's traditional war-making role over the eighteenth century, the uneven development of new regulatory duties in the nineteenth century, the impact of the two global wars of the twentieth century, the growth of the postwar welfare state, and the political reaction against it.Engagingly written and persuasively argued, The Modern British State should serve as a core text for a wide variety of courses in modern British history, politics, public policy, and historical sociology.

                                            Book Description

From the global reach of television to the danger of global warming, from the green revolution to the massive deployment of nuclear weapons, advances in science and technology have become the most powerful and persistent forces leading to societal change. This is the first comprehensive attempt to show how changes in science and technology affect the world political system - and are affected by it. Eugene Skolnikoff, who has devoted his professional life as an academic and policymaker to this subject, examines the impact of science and technology across the entire range of relations among nations, including security and economic issues, environmental questions, international economic competitiveness, the spread of weapons technology, the demise of communism, the new content of dependency relations, and the demanding new problems of national and international governance. Skolnikoff shows how the structure and operation of scientific and technological enterprises have interacted with international affairs to produce the dramatic evolution of world politics witnessed in this century, particularly after World War II. He questions, however, whether the underlying principles of the nation-state system have been appreciably changed as a result, and concludes that, with few exceptions, the fundamental assumptions of international affairs have not been altered. The "elusive transformation" remains just that - the present international system is likely to continue without basic change for the foreseeable future.

                                            Book Description

In the eighteenth century, chemistry was transformed from an art to a public science. Chemical affinity played an important role in this process as a metaphor, a theory domain, and a subject of investigation. Goethe's Elective Affinities, which was based on the current understanding of chemical affinities, attests to chemistry's presence in the public imagination. In Affinity, That Elusive Dream, Mi Gyung Kim restores chemical affinity to its proper place in historiography and in Enlightenment public culture.

The Chemical Revolution is usually associated with Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier, who introduced a modern nomenclature and a definitive text. Kim argues that chemical affinity was erased from historical memory by Lavoisier's omission of it from his textbook. She examines the work of many less famous French chemists (including physicians, apothecaries, metallurgists, philosophical chemists, and industrial chemists) to explore the institutional context of chemical instruction and research, the social stratification that shaped theoretical discourse, and the crucial shifts in analytic methods. Apothecaries and metallurgists, she shows, shaped the main theory domains through their innovative approach to analysis. Academicians and philosophical chemists brought about two transformative theoretical moments through their efforts to create a rational discourse of chemistry in tune with the reigning natural philosophy.

The topics discussed include the corpuscular (Cartesian) model in French chemistry in the early 1700s, the stabilization of the theory domains of composition and affinity, the reconstruction of French theoretical discourse in the middle of the eighteenth century, the Newtonian languages that plagued the domain of affinity just before the Chemical Revolution, Guyton de Morveau's program of affinity chemistry, Lavoisier's reconstruction of the theory domains of chemistry, and Berthollet's path as an affinity chemist.

Words cannot even explain how excellent this book is. Quoting right off the bat from Goethe's famed Elective Affinities, page one, this exquisite book flows onward throughout history like a gently French stream, meandering to its delightful conclusion.
