      Book Description

This book is mainly focused on the development of tools for decision-makers in finance, ranging from treasurers of firms to professional investors and bank managers. It presents a broad variety of applications using techniques and methodologies from various fields such as econometrics, operations research and financial mathematics. The tools for decision-making have been modified towards financial decision support systems. The role of the decision-maker has become dominant, both in the development and in the use of the decision support systems. The developments in both the computer hardware and software for computers simplify the design of individualized decision support systems. Financial modelling functions as a liason between theoretical financial expertise and practice.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another great book from Lynn Miller.......2003-06-01

This is a fantastic book from a series of fantastic books by the author. It will never be a bestseller simply because the information it contains is uninteresting to most people but if you want to learn to plow with horses or oxen, this is the only resource there is. This book covers every aspect of plowing, including the appropriate timing of tillage. It also discusses the numerous different types of walking and riding plows and gives instructions for the proper use and maintenance for each major type. There were far to many different plow companies to even mention all of them but Horsedrawn Plows and Plowing mentions all the most common with many fascinating reprinted images from old catalogs and manuals. This is a great book for anyone interested in animal traction, antique farm equipment or agricultural history

          Book Description

BIOLOGICAL VISION has a dual character. It is designed to provide a comprehensive overview of the operation of the visual system of any animal (including humans) while simultaneously providing a guide to the larger work, PROCESSES IN BIOLOGICAL VISION. The latter work is currently available in draft form on the World Wide Web. The larger work provides a more comprehensive analysis of each subject addressed in BIOLOGICAL VISION. It also provides an extensive list of references in support of it.

BIOLOGICAL VISION contains nine chapters. The first chapter begins with a phylogenic tree of the animal kingdom based on vision. The last ends with a series of figures defining the overall performance of the human visual system. Contrary to superficial statements in the recent literature, it shows that animals have enjoyed color vision for at least the last 500 years, long before the arrival of man. It also shows that biological vision is characteristically tetrachromatic; that is, it involves four separate and distinct spectral detection channels. The work takes a major step forward in showing that the human retina is also tetrachromatic, although the overall performance of the human visual system is partially blocked by the absorption of the lens system. The resulting human visual system is best described as a blocked tetrachromat. Its performance cannot be fully described using the conventional notion of humans as trichromats that dates from Thomas Young in 1802.

Chapter Two addresses the three fundamental forms of eyes found in the animal kingdom. It shows the frequently defined dichotomies within the animal kingdom are inappropriate when discussing vision. The families of Arthropoda, Mollusca and Chordata exhibit unique visual features that justify the use of a trichotometric approach when discussing the phylogeny of vision.

Chapter Three presents the overall architecture and signaling schematics found in animal vision. It defines the previously unrecognized role of the thalamus and other elements of the diencephalon in vision. It shows why the "primary visual cortex" does not play the primary role long envisioned in the literature. The primary role in the vision of the higher chordates is shown to be played by the thalamus. The thalamus is absolutely key to the ability of humans to analyze fine detail and to read. For the first time, the crucial role of the thalamic reticular nucleus in controlling the overall operation of the sensory systems of the organism is described. The chapter also shows the remarkable similarity between the signaling architecture of animal vision and its chief analog, the man-made system of color television. It also defines the multiple signaling modes involved in sensing and responding to the environment. These include the awareness, analytical, alarm and volition modes. The signaling path associated with the crucial analytical mode bypasses the primary visual cortex completely on its way to the cerebral cortex.

Chapter Four focuses on the operation of the neuron in its various forms required to support the overall operation of the neural system. The internal electrolytic operation of the neuron is presented for the first time. This presentation includes the description of its signal amplifying mechanism based on the Activa. The Activa is the electrolytic liquid-crystalline semiconductor equivalent of the man-made transistor. The Activa being a three-terminal device results in a major redefinition of the fundamental morphological and physiological characteristics of the neuron. It is demonstrated that, while the neuron is the fundamental morphological element of the neural system, it is not the fundamental electrophysiological element. Individual sensory and signal projection neurons generally contain multiple electrophysiological elements operating in series.

Chapters Five, Six and Seven focus on the unique characteristics, and close integration, of the photoreceptor cells, their associated retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) cells and the inter-photoreceptor-matrix (IPM) between the two cell types.

Chapter Five is devoted to describing the unique characteristics and operation of the photoreceptor cell from a multitude of perspectives. Like other sensory cells, it is shown to exhibit a neuro-secretory nature. In common with tactile sensory cells, it secretes a protein substance, opsin, used to produce the disks associated with it. Unlike, the tactile cells, the photoreceptor cells sense energy absorbed by the chromophores of vision rather than the energy due to bending of the individual hairs associated with the cells. The chromophores of vision are shown to originate in the RPE cells rather than, as previously thought, the photoreceptor cells themselves.

Chapter Six reviews the photochemistry of biological vision and shows there are four (not three) chromophores associated with vision. The formation of these four chemical species within the RPE cells, and their delivery via the IPM, is examined in detail.

Chapter Seven explores the morphogenesis of the chordate eye, with its reversed retina. It then explores the physical (cytological) dynamics of the photoreceptor cells. It shows that the so-called cones of vision are in fact immature or nonfunctional photoreceptor cells. This leads to the demonstration that all photoreceptor cells are morphologically rod-shaped and physically identical. They differ only in the type of chromophore used to coat their individual disk stacks.

Chapter Eight addresses a variety of features of the visual system architecture not widely appreciated. A top level schematic of the entire visual system is provided along with a top-level functional diagram. These two diagrams support the computational anatomy employed to simplify the mathematical calculations required in the neural system. It is shown that computational anatomy frees the neural system from the need to perform transcendental arithmetic. Finally, the unique two-dimensional associative correlator employed within the perigeniculate nucleus/pulvinar couple to extract features associated with the imaged scene is presented. This couple is key to the abilities of higher chordates, to interpret fine detail (and in the case of homo sapiens, to read). Higher chordates in this context include nearly all chordate predators, including the predatory birds.

Chapter Nine culminates in a summary of the performance achievable in human vision. The focus is on the five major performance characteristics. First, the transient response of the detection process. Second, the overall spectral performance (luminous efficiency function)of the visual system. Third, the chromatic (color rendition) capabilities of the system. Fourth, the dynamic sensitivity control (adaptation) capability of the system and the associated phenomenon of color constancy. And fifth, the temporal and spatial contrast performance of the system.

For the first time, the complete photoexcitation/de-excitation mechanism and equation of visual sensing are described. It shows the equation, proposed by Hodgkin during the 1960's as part of a piecewise solution, is actually a special case of the general mathematical solution. The special case of the long wavelength spectral channel is also developed. It is shown why the spectral performance of the visual system in the long wavelength region is lost as the scene illumination is reduced. For the first time, a cogent description of the transition from hyperopic, through photopic and mesopic to scotopic vision is presented. This description is compatible with all of the data in the literature going back to the 1930's. Using the schematics presented earlier, the chapter provides a physiologically based Chromaticity Diagram for the first time. This three-dimensional diagram is shown to be conformal over the entire spectral range of the tetrachromatic eye. A two-dimensional simplification of this Chromaticity Diagram is presented that is adequate (with caveats) for most studies in human vision. This diagram leads directly to the definition of a unique color set sought by the vision community for many years. When transformed into the coordinate system of the CIE (1935) Chromaticity Diagram, the non-conformality and general limitations of that presentation are highlighted. The new Diagram also leads to a theoretically precise three-dimensional lightness-chrominance space for the first time. The resulting space uncovers several second-order problems with the similar Munsell Color Space.

A brief section is presented on the mechanisms of perception and cognition. References are provided to the broader discussion in the larger work, PROCESSES IN BIOLOGICAL VISION.

            Book Description

            * Comprehensive assessment from the leading German environmental scientists of the state of the world's living resources or biosphere
            * Covers all aspects of the subject: biodiversity and genetic diversity, landscape and ecosystems, its role in the Earth's system and human impacts on it
            * Reviews global policies and research strategies on the biosphere and advocates urgent policy actions
            * A major, authoritative contribution to environmental science and policy

Biodiversity- the planet's natural capital- is undergoing a dramatic collapse: its " Sixth Extinction". The losses, which are do to human activities and overexploitation of the biosphere, are irreversible. They are undermining the basis of future well-being and prosperity, including genetic resources and food production, climate stability, and coastal and soil protection.

The scientists of the German Advisory Council on Global Change have produced an authoritative and alarming analysis of the state of the biosphere. They show that the time remaining for remedial action is fast disappearing and they set out a range of initiatives to be undertaken at different levels. Among their main urgent recommendations are:
            * protecting 10-20% of the global land area
            * an Intergovernmental Panel on Biodiversity to provide scientific advice
            * conservation of the diversity of cultivated as well as wild plant species
            * greater multilateral cooperation and implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity

The volume makes a highly significant contribution to the scientific and policy debates on these critical issues. It will be essential reading for those engaged with them.

              Book Description

This book deals with the main principles of large-scale atmospheric dynamics on the basis of adiabatic motion constants. It can be considered as an introduction to the theory of quasi two-dimensional fluid motion concentrating primarily on nearly horizontal fluid parcel displacements in a stably stratified compressible fluid. A thorough mathematical treatment of the governing equations is coupled with a clear interpretation of the phenomena studied and accompanied by examples of real meteorological data analysis. Topics include a complete set of compressible fluid dynamic equations along with a survey on fluid dynamical conservation laws used in meteorology and atmospheric physics; the derivation of two-dimensional atmospheric models; large-scale flows; isentropic analysis of large-scale atmospheric processes; and the principles of kinetic energy sinks and their relation to the energy balance in the atmosphere.

              Book Description

Twin sisters Kerry and Terry McAfee are well on their way to becoming Los Angeles’s most notorious PIs. With their bright red hair, canine sidekicks, and preferred mode of transportation--a hot-pink Harley--the girls are quickly getting a reputation for more than just sleuthing skills. So after nabbing the Butcher of Beverly Hills, they decide to take some time off and lay low for a while.

But then the girls’ rich Aunt Reba calls with the news that she’s found a decapitated body in her new Malibu beach house. Kerry insists that they call the police—partly because she hopes to catch a glimpse of her former flame, the hunky Detective John Boatwright. But no sooner do the cops begin investigating than Reba and the girls are shocked by the arrival of their Cousin Robert—carrying a blond-haired head in a mesh bag with no memory of where he’s been.

Now it’s up to the twins to find the real killer, as Reba and Robert face the prospect of life behind bars. As they search for clues, Kerry and Terry find themselves dealing with Mafia movie producers, wacko cultists, has-been actresses, and even visitors from outer space. With a razor-sharp wit that brilliantly brings to life L.A.’s most eccentric personalities, The Mangler of Malibu Canyon is fast-paced, sexy, and more fun than a ride down the Pacific Coast Highway.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, fun fun!.......2007-07-25

After enjoying The Butcher of Beverly Hills so much, I couldn't wait to read this book. I hoped Colt wouldn't lose her touch, and she doesn't disappoint. She's a clever plotter and a pro at creating realistic dialogue and quirky characters. The fun starts immediately and never lets up, keeping you guessing the whole time. I look forward to The Vampire of Venice Beach, and hope that Colt has more Kerry and Terry adventures in store for her readers. Fans of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series will find plenty to like here, but Colt has created an original series that can stand on its own merits. Skeptics might also enjoy the plot's zings at certain well-funded alien-centric Hollywood religions...

5 out of 5 stars Double The Fun And Murder.......2007-03-13

Double the fun! Twin sisters Kerry and Terry McAfee are PIs in Los Angeles. You can't miss them with their bright red hair and hot-pink Harley. They are a hoot!

Their rich aunt Reba finds a decapitated body in her new Malibu beach house. Detective John Boatright, the hunky detective Kerry is interested in, arrives to investigate. Then in walks their cousin Robert with a blonde-haired head in a mesh bag. He has no idea where he's been. Soon both Robert and Reba are confessing to the murder and end up in jail.

Terry and Kerry know they have to find the murderer to clear their cousin and aunt. In the process, they end up involved with Malibu movie producers, actors, cultists, and visitors from outer space. Can they sort through all the possible suspects and find the killer without putting themselves in danger and before Robert and Reba are convicted?

This series is fabulous. I just discovered it and can't wait to read the next book, The Vampire Of Venice Beach. There's also the first in the series, The Butcher Of Beverly Hills. I hope these girls will be around a long time. The writer has such great wit. I ended up laughing out loud many times from their antics. Kerry and Terry are quite different and that's what makes this work so well.

I highly recommend this book and series.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars and Two thumbs up for Terry & Kerry a la Mangler........2007-01-23

I absolutely LOVED round two with the twins. The plot was creative... surprising, compelling-- and just beyond my radar. The characters all grow but still have the same great dynamic. I was kept guessing, and laughing all the way through. I thought I had it-- then, No. But it always twisted better than I could have guessed. The dialogue is fast paced, clever and kind of liberating. The girls ride around on a pink Harley and get things done. I found myself smiling outloud (if one can do that) many times throughout. ;-)

4 out of 5 stars The McAfee twins are at it again!.......2006-08-12

Mystery is not generally my genre of choice - I tend to stick to plain old chick lit or historical fiction - yet the McAfee twins somehow manage to tear me away from my usual "fluff" novels. I immensely enjoyed the first novel in this new series, and loved this second book even more, as I think the author's writing has improved since writing her first book. Colt has once again displayed her talent for creating an intelligent and complex plot about mysterious murders, and yet giving us a funny, and light-hearted novel that is as entertaining as it is perplexing. I whole-heartedly recommend "The Mangler of Malibu Canyon", as well as the previous novel, "The Butcher of Beverly Hills", and I look forward to many more great novels from Jennifer Colt!

5 out of 5 stars The Author Rocks Too!.......2006-07-28

I picked up the first book The Butcher of Bev. Hills and LOVED it! I could not wait for the second one and I was not disappointed in the least! If you love Janet Evanovich then you will love Jennifer Colt! I also emailed the author to let her know how much I was enjoying Mangler and she wrote back to say thanks! Not too many do that and that ranks high in my (pardon the pun) book! LOL Can't wait for the Vampire of Venice Beach!

              Book Description

Americans often think of their nationÂ's history as a movement toward ever-greater democracy, equality, and freedom. Wars in this story are understood both as necessary to defend those values and as exceptions to the rule of peaceful progress. In The Dominion of War, historians Fred Anderson and Andrew Cayton boldly reinterpret the development of the United States, arguing instead that war has played a leading role in shaping North America from the sixteenth century to the present.

Anderson and Cayton bring their sweeping narrative to life by structuring it around the lives of eight men—Samuel de Champlain, William Penn, George Washington, Andrew Jackson, Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, Ulysses S. Grant, Douglas MacArthur, and Colin Powell. This approach enables them to describe great events in concrete terms and to illuminate critical connections between often-forgotten imperial conflicts, such as the Seven YearsÂ' War and the Mexican- American War, and better-known events such as the War of Independence and the Civil War. The result is a provocative, highly readable account of the ways in which republic and empire have coexisted in American history as two faces of the same coin. The Dominion of War recasts familiar triumphs as tragedies, proposes an unconventional set of turning points, and depicts imperialism and republicanism as inseparable influences in a pattern of development in which war and freedom have long been intertwined. It offers a new perspective on AmericaÂ's attempts to define its role in the world at the dawn of the twenty-first century.

5 out of 5 stars A readable and very important book.......2005-08-02

As is well known, American leaders tend to justify wars by explaining them as operations in defense of liberty and democracy. This important book examines that notion through the impact of several historically key men on North America.

They include Samuel de Champlain, whose missionizing and choosing up sides in various Indian wars set the stage for "the most widespread and destructive warfare in North American history"; William Penn, whose sincere efforts to coexist peacefully with the Indians degenerated into the unapologetic expansionism of his heirs; George Washington, who foresaw so many of the dangers of military intervention abroad; the tempestuous and bullying Andrew Jackson, who owned slaves, relocated thousands of Indians west of the Mississippi, and set the stage for ongoing wars of conquest in the name of freedom and liberty (and who had the gall to argue that relocating the Indians was "not only liberal, but generous"); Ulysses Grant, reluctant participant in the land-grabbing war with Mexico, a man who clearly understood that such aggressive moves always bring punishing consequences; the grandstanding Douglas MacArthur, aging momma's boy and self-appointed missionary of Christianity and liberty, finally relieved of command by Truman for suggesting that the United States nuke China; and Colin Powell, whose highly distinguished military career ran parallel with a habit of doing what he was told while silencing his doubts--doubts that nearly always turned out to be realistically based. "I had been conditioned to believe in the wisdom of my superiors...."

The authors of this book tell a balanced tale without heavy-handed recourse to the lessons unlearned from history, but the lessons stand out anyway: the conquest of the Phillipines, for example, so many of whose citizens died in the American attempt to liberate them in a bloody, exhausting campaign that only ended when the occupation did. Concentration camps and torture inflicted by MacArthur's soldiers stained these attempts to mold a nation's fate from above, as did Roosevelt's propagandistic declaration that the insurrection was over (July 4, 1902) when in fact it would not end for many years.

A poignant event might well give food for thought: Woodrow Wilson's 1916 draft of a speech to Congress, which stated that "it shall not lie with American people to dictate to another people what their government shall be or what use they shall have or what persons they shall encourage or favor." Reviewing the speech, Secretary of State Robert Lansing wrote: "Haiti, S. Domingo, Nicaragua, Panama" in the margin by way of comment (he might have added Cuba, Mexico, and the Phillipines), whereupon Wilson gave up on the speech, a decision that may well mark a significant difference between the politics of his time and our own.

5 out of 5 stars Imperialism and ideology.......2005-03-31

This is a very insightful account of American history in the chord of imperial expansion, telling the story that doesn't quite appear in standard accounts. We are so habituated to the American narrative that we forget the terrible legacy of expansionism, and its endless betrayals and ethnic cleansing. One useful feature of the account is to start in the sixteenth century, and show the change that came over the relations of settlers and Native Indians. A further key is to include the complexities of the Seven Years War to that of the American Revolution, showing their direct connection (the same for the Mexican-American War and the Civil War). The story of William Penn and his pacifism and good relations with the Indians is like a forgotten echo, and, as with this case, it is important to see how much of our history is a story of the defeat of good intentions as the lowest common denominator of imperial conquest seems to take over. The case of Penn and Pennsylvannia is a reminder of what might/should/could have been, leaving no excuse for the teleological fallacies of the great American narrative.

5 out of 5 stars An interesting thesis.......2005-01-07

Anderson and Cayton make the controversial thesis that Americans use the themes of liberty and freedom for their own expansionist aims. The first two chapters of the book, the authors describe how the European powers cooperated with the Native Americans in order to acheive their aims. But after the Seven Years War, the colonists viewed British cooperation with natives as impeding their drive westward. During the Revolutionary War, Americans ethnically cleansed thousands of Native Americans in order to defend their individual rights to expand westward. George Washington tried tired to slowly assimilate Native Americans to embrace ideas of freedom and democracy, but his plans fell apart due to the violent actions by Scotch-Irish settlers and later by Andrew Jackson's policies in the western borderlands. Grant tried to implement Washington's program after the Civil War, but did nothing to prevent the expulsion of the Native Americans from their lands. The same policies that Washington and Grant used on the Native Americans expanded to the Phillippines and Cuba in which the interests of these citizens were subordinated to the wishes of the United States. MacArthur followed similiar actions in his dealings with the Japanese after the Second World War in which he repressed some Japanese publications because they were against the interests of the United States. The main weakness of this book is that the first two chapters of the book does not flow with the remaining chapters and that the authors don't compare the American empire with its European counterparts in the nineteenth century. Otherwise this book strongly disputes writings by the likes of William Kristol on the right, and Samantha Powers on the left, that advocate the use of American military force in order to spread individual freedom.

                    Book Description

Contesting Home Defence is a new history of the Home Guard, a novel national defence force of the Second World War composed of civilians who served as part-time soldiers: it questions accounts of the force and the war, which have seen them as symbols of national unity. The book makes a significant and original contribution to debates concerning the British home front and introduces fresh ways of understanding the Second World War.

                      Book Description

A landmark oral history — the latest in the bestselling and award-winning Forgotten Voices series.

Drawing on the Imperial War Museum’s extensive aural archive, Joshua Levine brings together voices from both sides of the Blitz and the Battle of Britain to give us a compelling picture of this turbulent time.

In June 1940, British citizens prepared for an imminent German onslaught. Hitler’s troops had overrun Holland, Belgium and France in quick succession, and the British people anticipated an invasion would soon be upon them. From July to October, they watched the Battle of Britain play out in the skies above them, aware that the result would decide their fate. Over the next nine months, the Blitz killed more than 43,000 civilians. For a year, the citizens of Britain were effectively front-line soldiers in a battle that united the country against the enemy.

We hear from the soldiers, airmen, fire fighters, air-raid wardens and civilians, people in the air and on the ground, on both sides of the battle, giving us a thrilling account of Britain under siege. With first-hand testimonies from those involved in Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, and the Blitz, this is the definitive oral history of the period.

                        Book Description

Men and Women of the 1930s is an original and challenging critique of the issues of memory and gender during this trying decade. Montefiore asks two principle questions; what part does memory play in the political literature of and about 1930s Britain? And what were the roles of women, both as writers and as signifying objects in constructing that literature? Montefiore's topical analysis of 1930s mass unemployment, fascist uprise and 'appeasement' is shockingly relevant in society today. Issues of class, anti-fascist historical novels, post war memoirs of 'Auden generation' writers and neglected women poets are discussed at length and help explain how we understand and imagine history through literature.

Set Europe ablaze: that was Winston Churchill's order to the Special Operations Executive (the SOE), charged with sabotaging and subverting the enemy during World War II. The undercover agents of this elite group blew up special targets, armed and trained the Resistance, acted as political advisors, and all too frequently gave their lives in the most terrible circumstances. Detested by its rivals--and even in parts of Whitehall--it had free rein to create mayhem. But, the critical role played by these brave men and women is now universally recognized, and a former member tells their thrilling and authentic story. With a new introduction by Francis Cammaerts, the former conscientious objector who become one of the most remarkable SOE agents of all.
