3 out of 5 stars Okay as a supplement, but far from compleat.......2006-07-15

Believe it or not, after I finished the whole book, I couldnt identify what the "7 indicators that move markets" are per book title.

Content wise, the book is satisfying. However, as an economist, the author might have tried too hard to put all his knowledge in this 185 page content book that readers easily lose track of key points and feel it disorganized. The explanation or elaboration per particular economic indicators and scenario is good. Nevertheless, the relationship between particular indicators/chapters/scenarios are weak. As a whole, it appears to be a pack of lecture notes more than a compleat investment book. In the very case you want to know how fed fund futures...yield curves...credit spreads...volatility...option price derivatives...futures price relationships...industrial commodity prices...(I finally found these seven terms out in the book flip) affect the market, this book is good for you. If not, please give this a pass.

            Book Description

Biomonitoring is a vital and rapidly growing field. Freshwater Biomonitoring and Benthic Macroinvertebrates presents a state-of-the-art look at the use of benthic macroinvertebrates (aquatic insects, molluscs, crustaceans, and worms) in the biological assessment of water quality in lakes and streams. The use of these organisms has increased dramatically in the past two decades in both North America and Europe; no other comprehensive overview of the topic is available. This book contains contributions from nineteen experts from North America, Europe, and Australia. Some chapters contain updates and syntheses of new information on previously reviewed topics, while others present the first detailed coverage of a topic. The book includes much useful reference material on the history of biomonitoring with invertebrates as well as work of a more practical nature. The design, implementation, analysis and interpretation of benthic surveys are discussed in detail, as are toxicity testing and field experiments. This timely and important book will be of interest to professional entomologists, invertebrate zoologists, and aquatic ecologists, especially those in applied areas concerned with environmental quality, preservation, and restoration. Those working in the growing environmental biotechnology field, or in government agencies responsible for monitoring drinking water, environmental quality, or marine habitats, will also find many new ideas here.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book, terrible price.......2004-02-27

This book is absolutely an essential resource for scientists and managers who are interested in biomonitoring techniques or programs. Each article is absolutely brimming with well-worded, well-organized, pertinent information. If you are willing to spend the time to read the entire collection of papers, you will have a firm grasp of most (not all) of the older and contemporary biomonitoring techniques. This book is geared toward freshwater biomonitoring, but can most certainly be applied with a marine setting. My only qualm is that the book is list priced on amazon.ca at $413CDN, but you can order it from amazon.com for $161USD...yikes! Buy it from .com, not .ca, sorry Canada!

            5 out of 5 stars A "must-have" for freshwater biologists.......2001-06-24

I first became familiar with this book as I was starting out in freshwater ecology (5 years ago). I am finishing up my thesis now and have had it checked out of the University library for the entire 2 yrs I have been here!! I am in search of a used copy... The authors are some of the top researchers in their field and the information they provide here is an excellent resource whether one is in search of toxicology information or statistics. I strongly recommend this book for all interested in macroinvertebrates and biomonitoring.

            Book Description

The observation and understanding of extra-solar planetary systems has become a very exciting topic that poses challenges to many fields of human knowledge. A few years after the first observational evidence of planets outside the Solar System, this field of research has experienced spectacular developments. One of the characteristics of the field is that it draws together researchers from a variety of fields: astrophysics, geophysics, biochemistry, etc., and opens up new areas for their interactions. This book sets out a synthesis of the advances and points of view of this adventure. Young students, researchers, engineers involved or about to become involved in this challenging quest for extra-solar planets will benefit by reading such a synthetic review.

A nice collection of texts treating the state of the art in extrasolar planetary science, written by people who truly enjoyed themselves at a meeting in a relaxed environment. The only flaw would be that some interesting material mentioned during the meeting never got into the book (my own paper got included, though).

              Book Description

The book deals with semiclassical methods for systems with spin, in particular methods involving trace formulae and torus quantisation and their applications in the theory of quantum chaos, e.g. the characterisation of spectral correlations. The theoretical tools developed here not only have immediate applications in the theory of quantum chaos - which is the second focus of the book - but also in atomic and mesoscopic physics. Thus the intuitive understanding of semiclassical spin dynamics will also be helpful in emerging subjects like spintronics and quantum computation.

Brock Clarke's debut novel, The Ordinary White Boy, is a familiar story of a young man finding comfort with himself amidst an average life of work, relationships, and occasional hardships. Lamar Carney, in his khaki pants and flannel shirts, lets life happen to him, always saying he would rather be doing nothing than something.

The truth is that I don't want to be special... Being special can make you think that you are something you're not: it can make you believe, say, that you live in a city when in reality you live in a shrinking little mill town. Being special can also make you believe that you're too important to go out and cover emergency school-board meetings for forty dollars a pop, plus mileage.

Throughout most of the novel, Lamar questions conventional society, even though he is destined to conform to it. Still, Clarke has done wonders subtly producing a special sort of character, even though Lamar might claim otherwise. A refreshing, casual read. --Yvonne Schindler

              Book Description

Lamar Kerry, Jr., is an unlikely hero. At twenty-seven years old he can't dance unless he's had more than a few drinks. His wardrobe is uninspired, at best. He has returned after college to Little Falls, his miserable, working-class hometown in upstate New York, deflating everyone's expectations of him in so doing. He's over-educated, overconfident, fundamentally bright, but mostly going nowhere. When the town's only Latino, Lamar's former high school classmate, goes missing and is feared dead, Lamar--done with being a disappointment to his father and his girlfriend--decides to break out of the ordinary by solving the case, the roots of which may be in the town's racist undercurrent. Will the ordinary white boy achieve the extraordinary in Little Falls?
In a voice both tender and biting, Brock Clarke mingles subtle social criticism with laugh-out-loud funny observations, crafting in Lamar a character both unforgettable and universal, a character that will live long and proud in American literature.

As an ordinary white boy, with roots in a small town, I loved the writing and the observations in this book.
This is not a book for one who wants to read of a far-flung adventure. It is introspective and interesting...

5 out of 5 stars In the Tradition of Percy and Ford.......2002-08-01

Clarke has written a fine first novel. If you enjoy Walker Percy's The Moviegoer or Richard Ford's The Sportswriter, check out Ordinary White Boy.

5 out of 5 stars Judging a Book by its Cover.......2002-03-22

Bonnie puts all the Advance Reader Copies out on a table in her independent bookstore. They're there for us to take if we want; she could never read them all. I browsed these books recently, reading titles, author's names, and wondering about the artwork. This one has the guy snoozing on the red couch. The Ordinary White Boy? Sounded interesting, looked interesting. So, I took it.

Turns out it was interesting. I love Lamar, the self proclaimed ordinary white boy. What's great about him is that he is coming to terms with who he is and the choices he's made in his life. I felt like I should read with a highlighter pen and mark up the passages of self discovery so I could pass it on to friends and say, check out this passage. But I might as well photocopy the book to yellow paper. It's full of discovery and I want my friends to read every page.

It occurs to me that "discovery" is a heavy word. This novel is everything but heavy. Short chapters, snappy dialogue, and insightful monologue made this book fun to read. The fact that I walked away, much as Lamar does, with a little more clarity about ordinary white boys is just bonus.

              1 out of 5 stars Little Falls.......2002-02-21

Just wondering why the author chose Little Falls as his place to demean in his book?

              5 out of 5 stars Exceptional........2001-09-26

Brilliant. A well written debut from an author who is so completely comfortable with his prose that the main character dances in your thoughts long after you've put down the novel. Be prepared, this is by no means a quick read... it is instead, a wealth a detailed wit and controversy which will open your eyes and furrow your brow in the same chapter. To the reader enjoy this book... put up your feet... curl up with your blanket... energize your book club... and to the author... well done.

                            Why buy two copies?
One to have at your work place, to scan during your breaks; another for home.
This fact filled book is one you'll pick up every day, if you're a Civil War buff. I've book marked each year by the days in the book, and daily read the events, of those particular years.

Simply stated, the book records events during the Civil War on a daily basis. (Both major and minor events, plus political events and things on 'the home place'.)

The end of the book has regimental figures, ( wounded, killed, etc.) plus many other gems. [ yes, we know causality figures can vary]

This is a great book, you might even buy one to sit in the bathroom, for reading material at times ;-)

Every Civil War buff needs this book.

5 out of 5 stars Very concise! Every day covered!.......2002-09-23

It certainly covers every day of the Civil War. If you wanted to know what happened on a certain day of a month during the war, it will tell you every newsworthy event that happened in a brief format. I can't think of a better book to answer to the question of "What happened on this day in the Civil War?".

                            5 out of 5 stars Daily Account.......2000-04-13

This book has been used so many times at the battlefield information desk that the cover is ready to fall off and the pages to splay out across the desk.

The daily accounts are brief yet informative and go far in giving the reader background material for a more researched dig into the past. The index is well laid out and gives the reader an excellent time line to help locate material, and the bibliography is on par with the index!

Your Civil War book shelf would not be complete without it!

I've always been a fan of Time Magazine, and i think in general it is a good magazine. it was nice to see the history of the Time, but there was a lot they left out. i don't highly recommend this book, but then i don't chase anyone away from it either.

                                                  Book Description

Anyone alive in the latter part of the 20th century is familiar with computers and the concept of doing work via these silicon-chip-driven modern wonders. A typical handheld computing device today has more computing power than a 1960s computer that took up an entire room. In today's world, computing size equals speed: the smaller the faster. With computing speed nearly doubling every 18 months, today's computing power is more than 100 million times that of a computer in 1970.What does the future hold for computers and their ever-growing power? In Scientific American's UNDERSTANDING SUPERCOMPUTING, you'll discover what constitutes a "super-computer," how the super-computers of today function, how you can make your own computer into a super machine (it's a matter of networking), and what tomorrow holds in store for computer usage in terms of hardware, software, and everyday applications.

A recent grouping of 15 articles published in Scientific American, from 1995-2001. Though computing is still chugging along at Moore's Law's rate, these articles are still quite germane. Written at a level for a broad, educated audience, they give you a good understanding of the various key points in supercomputing.

Issues include how to cluster computers into a functional unit, that can run these all efficiently (load balance). Or, how to make novel arrangements of computers into a supercomputer. Plus, of course, the steady progress of vector supercomputers, which has been the traditional route since Cray pioneered these in the 1970s.

The articles are not just about how to make better supercomputers. They also discuss why you'd want to do so. The problems you can now tackle with better hardware. Meteorology being the classic (unclassified) application.
