Better for people that are not day traders.......2007-06-15
This is a great book for those that are trying to understand the theoretical underpinings of short selling. It is probably most appropriate for money managers who are trying to understand the difference between long and short strategies, quants (as a basic book with which to frame short selling separate from long startegies), and generalists. It is not a book for day traders who would do better focusing on charting.
Who will write a great book on short selling?.......2005-02-18
This book doesn't really help me much. Lots of theory, oriented more to the fundamentalist rather than the technician, Okay for someone majoring in finance in college.
I'm interested in day trading and swing trading. And I'm still looking for a well-written, succinct, truly informative book about selling short that focuses on patterns and indicators. The best so far is "How to Make Money Selling Stocks Short" (Wiley Trading) by William J. O'Neil, and Gil Moralesguess.
Maybe someone can convince Jack Schwager, Gary Smith, Mark Etzkorn or Josh Lukeman to dust off their keyboard and show some mercy towards we greenhorns. Since i'm calling out these specific authors, I might as well add that they please fast-track the project. How about "Short Selling for the Technical or Visual Investor"? There must be a market guys!
Very Academic.......2005-01-18
I found very little practical advice on short selling strategies. There was considerable theoretical discussion of the risks and rewards of short selling. I would recommend this book only for those who were looking to improve their understanding of financial theory.
Book Description
Combines a history of short selling with current strategies and applications to present a complete guide to this increasingly popular investment tool. Procedural and regulatory requirements are mixed with actual case studies and examples that readers can apply to specific situations. Risks and rewards of short selling are discussed in detail as are short selling as a tool for protecting other investments and for speculation.

Dangerous Democracy?
ASIN: 0890899681 |
Book Description
There is little doubt that in recent years the initiative process has become one of the most important mechanisms for altering and influencing public policy at every level of government. In the last two years alone, utilizing the initiative process, citizens were heard on affirmative action, educational reform, term limits, tax reform, campaign finance reform, animal protection, drug policy reform, and the environment.
However, the initiative process has fallen prey to its own success. Lawmakers who have been most affected by this citizen's tool have struck back by imposing new regulations on the process regulations that serve no purpose but to deprive the citizens of the only avenue available to them to reign in unresponsive government.
These regulations have generated many questions that have so far remained unanswered or have been discussed only in specialist journals. There are legal questions about signature gathering and limits on campaign spending, political questions about implementing the relevant statutes, and philosophical questions about equality and freedom of expression. The Battle Over Citizen Lawmaking discusses the evolution of the initiative and referendum process, the need for the process, how it has been utilized, the impetus for new regulations, the major regulations that have been imposed, the role the courts have played in regulating the initiative and referendum process, what role money plays, and how the process has been regulated in other countries. This book comprehensively addresses these issues from the viewpoint of leading scholars, opinion leaders, journalists, elected officials, activists, and attorneys.
Customer Reviews:
Best book available on initiative and referendum.......2002-10-20
The initiative and referendum process was used more during the 1990s than it had been for decades. The people have used the process to cut taxes, protect animals and the environment, enact public health care laws, impose term limits on their legislatures, and much more.
State legislatures have reacted by curtailing the process, in effect opposing this challenge to their power by the people they are supposed to represent. The Battle Over Citizen Lawmaking describes this struggle as well as teaching us a great deal about initiative and referendum in America.
Of all the books written about the initiative process in recent years, The Battle Over Citizen Lawmaking stands out as the best. The book, written by scholars, journalists, and activists and edited by the President of the Initiative and Referendum Institute, gives an account of the history of the initiative process and the reasons both for and against increased regulation. Unlike many other works on the subject, it is scupulously fair to all points of view.
Although it is intended as a textbook for political science classes - and is a very good one indeed - The Battle Over Citizen Lawmaking is also suitable for the informed general reader. If you plan to read only one book about the initiative process, read this one.

Book Description
This Manual is written for trainers in governmental and non-governmental development organizations who are preparing their staff to work together with farmers in developing technologies appropriate to ecological agriculture and using few external inputs. The training is designed to stimulate active learning by participants who draw on their own experience, an approach which mirrors the type of interaction between facilitator and farmers in Participatory Technology Development (PTD).
PTD in agriculture is a process of interaction between local people and outside facilitators to develop more sustainable farming systems. It starts with a joint analysis of the situation, an activity commonly known as PRA (Participatory Rural Appraisal). It continues by including participatory planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of local development activities. The heart of PTD is experimentation with new ideas designed and conducted by farmers with the encouragement of PTD practitioners.

Book Description
Natural disasters, response, recovery, and mitigation are important topics for policy makers, sustainable development specialists, technical experts and teachers. The occurrences and distributions of natural disaster events and the responses and mitigation practices associated with them are presented in the book. Experts on natural disaster topics and regional experts on natural disasters provide compelling information. A rich background in natural disasters and the places where they frequently occur is presented. The chapter authors' discussions address the physical attributes of natural events and secondly, the role of education and training as mitigation strategies. This second perspective examines mitigation practices. Alternatives beyond disaster response and recovery are being practiced in many places. The role of education and training is highlighted. It is intended that the book be a welcome addition to working in natural disasters policies, education, training, and improving the public understanding of natural disasters and the mitigation of their effects.
This volume includes a CD-ROM containing electronic versions, in full color if available, of the figures which are all printed in black-and-white in the book.
Book Description
Author Rob Ballister delivers a touching and entertaining portrait of his journey through dating, growing up in New Jersey, and surviving cancer. Along the way, he learns that God Does Have a Sense of Humor. Follow him:
Through surgeryMy understanding was that the doctor, while hopping up and down on one foot and singing the national anthem, was going to remove my lymph nodes using a butter knife, a hacksaw, and some 10W-30 motor oil.
Into the confessionalThere sat Father Riener, who was technically old enough to have been one of the original apostles. As I began reciting my list, Father began falling asleep. Being only in the fourth grade, I did exactly what I did at home when my younger sister fell asleep. I kicked him.
Through family Christmas traditionsThat first year, Dad put up a wreath and Mom put up a tree, and things were pretty much low key that season. Then I was born, and as I grew, so did Dad's commitment to having the house visible from orbiting spacecraft.
With an incredibly wry sense of humor, Ballister offers a hilarious look at life, guaranteed to make you smile!

Guaranteed To Make You Laugh.......2006-11-21
A day without laughter is like a day without sunshine. All your days can be sunny if you'll just open Rob's book.
Wandering through the table of contents was my first indication that I was in for a chuckle. His candid sharing of awkard moments was enough to put me rolling on the floor with laughter. There is definitely something for everyone to laugh about in his book.
If you're looking for a fun book to read, God Does Have A Sense Of Humor hits the spot!
A fun, light comedy about the author's life as told through a collection of short stories.......2006-11-13
The author, Rob Ballister, presents a light-hearted and fun look at his own life as told through a collection of short stories that span 20 years of his life.
What I like most about the book is that I could pick it up and within fifteen minutes, I could read four or five humorous stories - each story was typically 2-4 pages long. The challenge for me in reading the book was in putting it down once I had picked it up - it was too easy to convince myself that I should read just one more story rather than turn my light off and go to bed.
As a fellow cancer survivor and Naval Academy graduate, I could place myself in many of the same situations that the author experienced. I marvel at his ability to make such witty humor out of situations like cancer, going to church, dating and family functions as he cleverly folds in current events and pop culture (like the leg with stockings lamp from "A Christmas Story").
All in all, a very good and funny read that I would recommend to anyone - it will really touch home to anyone who has ever had cancer, served in the military, or been a bachelor.
Great theraputic book!.......2006-11-09
Ballister's book is therapy. Instead of tearing through it, I set it aside for nights where I was tired and cranky and needed to be reminded through humor that someone has always had a worse day. This book lifted my spirits and kept me going on rough nights. I may read it again. To the author - thanks for sharing and mission accomplished
Laugh Out Loud Funny!.......2006-10-09
I don't know if God has a sense of humor or not, but Rob Ballister certainly has one. I knew I was going to like this book when I rifled through the pages and spotted a chapter heading entitled "Sex Education as Taught by Nuns." I got a chuckle out of that, and I haven't stopped laughing since.
Given Ballister's ability to find humor and absurdity in everything from blind dates to cancer surgery, it's probably inevitable that he'll wind up being compared to Dave Barry. But some element of profound sincerity at the core of his writing reminds me more of Erma Bombeck or Lewis Grizzard.
If this book doesn't make you laugh till milk comes out your nose, you may not have a funny bone.
Jeff Edwards, Author of "Torpedo"
The Author Has a Wonderful Sense of Humor! .......2006-10-07
I started off reading "God Does have a sense Of Humor" not expecting too much more than perhaps a nice gentle little book that might make me smile on occasion. I ended up finding myself laughing out loud and almost wetting my pants! Author Rob Ballister, a Naval Academy graduate and current Naval Officer in San Diego, really has a wonderful sense of what is funny even when he is battling life threatening health issues like testicle cancer. I figured if anyone could make fun of that life situation then the rest of his book would be hilariously funny in the male "Erma Bombeck" sort of way. And his book is really all about make energy and humor that women will enjoy just as much.
The book is filled with dozens of short stories; some of which are based on true experiences while some are totally fictional creations of the wild imagination of the author. The key is that I could not tell which were what, when reading them--they all felt like real experiences because of the warm and skillful writing skills of Ballister. His subject matter goes from "Sex Education as Taught by Nuns" to "Christmas in Gingerbread Hell". He deals with the simple things in life that men deal with like laundry protocols (separating colors) and blind date disasters. He handles all of these men's issues like a profession male and makes his gender proud!
There are so many just great moments in his stories. I think most all of us guys can relate to his comments on shopping differences between men and women and the experience of buying something at "Victoria's Secret". This book is full of little pearls of wisdom and humorous gems. The book entertains while filling the reader's heart with a smile. That is saying a lot in these stressful times of terrorists, wars and random street crimes; it is nice to have something that allows the readers to escape, relax, smile and maybe even laugh out loud. This is one of those special books that are a true gift for your soul!
The MWSA gives this book its highest rating of FIVE STARS! The book would be a great gift to all the men in your life--be them fathers, brothers, husbands, significant others, or just male friends. You will find however, that women will be laughing just as hard but at our male traits and behaviors when they read his stories. It is a delightful reading experience and one that is pure entertainment!

Customer Reviews:
The Real Thing!.......2006-04-17
I've read dozens of WWII books and this is one of the best! There is nothing quite like reading about Great Americans' experiences in their own words. They answered the call, did their duty and risked their lives every day to protect their Country and our way of life. Now everyone can find out what it was like in graphic detail. This is the first book written by Brooks Mitchell that I have read and I look forward to reading his other works.
Proud Men All Going To Serve Their Country.......2006-03-27
My father was the pilot in this book and he passed away prior to it's being published. I can only read a few pages at a time as the emotion of the events wells up very quickly. It is a wonderful look into one airplane crew from different individual perspectives as they faced each mission not knowing what they were to encounter. My father would be proud!! They were good Americans applies to the ones who gave their lives and the ones who made it to tell their stories. God Bless You
A Gift to My Dad.......2006-03-21
My Dad is 79. He was in the Army Air Corp and Air Force from 1944 to 1949. He now spends much of his day reading and, on occasion, still enjoys assemblng a WWII model airplane. He does not have the same eye for detail and the dexterity he once had, but the pleasure of his hobby remains. I gave my Dad Kipling's Error III as a gift. His emotional response and heartfelt appreciation was my gift. He enjoyed the sensitive writing style and personal diaries with a tear in his eye and a flood of memories. We are deeply grateful to Dr. Brooks Mitchell and Capt. Lloyd Mitchell for kindly and respectfully honoring and remembering our veterans. Thank you.
Preserving a historical experience.......2006-03-18
Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (3/06)
Brooks Mitchell, PhD, wrote this biography about his father, a B-17 navigator of Kipling's Error III, and his crew's 25 combat missions that took place over Europe during World War II. Mitchell gathered his information from diaries written by his father and four of his crewmen. He also used a taped interview with his father that his daughter created while she was doing a high school paper. There are also vintage photographs that bring the stories more vividly alive.
Through this story, Brooks achieves his goal of preserving the experiences of these crewmen during the time of war. The reader learns about the difficult times that these men experienced while they were stationed in Snetterton-Heath England. "Kipling's Error III" provides excellent insights into what these brave men had to sacrifice during their time of serving our country. Because the information was taken from some of the crewmen's personal diaries, the reader gets to see life as it really was during this time. Every aspect of the men's lives is covered.
This book provides so much more rich detail, than a traditional history book. When Captain Lloyd Mitchell wrote in his diary, "They were good Americans," he was referring to friends of his who were killed during a raid into the Third Reich. He had to help clean up their remains. By learning about the war from the experiences of these men, the reader is able to see the full range of emotions that they had to deal with while they were at war and then the personal issues they faced being so far away from their family and friends.
I highly recommend this book to World War II fans. Reading through the diary entries and seeing the photographs will really make you feel like you are present. Passing on this story also an important way to preserve this historical experience of American men who were truly, "good Americans."
The story of the men who flew a B-17 Flying Fortress on twenty-five successful raids over enemy occupied Europe.......2006-03-14
Drawing from flight crew diaries and enhanced with vintage photographs, Kipling's Error III: They Were Good Americans is the story of the men who flew a B-17 Flying Fortress on twenty-five successful raids over enemy occupied Europe. Striking out from their base in Snetterton-heath, England, these were men who were put through every possible human emotion in a bloody and savage aerial war that included bravery, terror, duty, patriotism, love and hate. The author, Brooks Mitchell , is the eldest of three sons of Captain Lloyd Mitchell who served as the navigator of Kipling's Error II and has provided an invaluable contribution to the growing library of World War II aviation combat histories. Kipling's Error III is impressively informative, exceptionally well edited and written, very highly recommended reading for military buffs, and a core addition to academic and community library World War II Military Studies reference collections.

Book Description
On the remote outer coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Clayoquot Sound might seem to be situated at the periphery of contemporary power and authority. And yet, as the disputed land of native peoples and the contentious site of corporate logging in one of the world's last remaining temperate rain forests, Clayoquot Sound is also squarely in the middle of global politics today. These authors develop a new way of making sense of the rapidly changing character of political life in our day, revealing the political problems and possibilities inherent in the convergence of the global and the local so dramatically enacted in Clayoquot Sound.

Customer Reviews:
A must read.......2003-08-01
This is a must read for everyone interested in how environmental policy gets made. In this highly readable text, the editors have gathered a range of authors that approach environmental politics from several interesting directions. Some of the chapters are highly personal accounts, while others are more abstract and theoretical discussions of what makes up the politics of the environment. You will be impressed to discover how much actual and intellectual territory this covers, and how particular views of history shape a sense of where politics actually occurs. Additionally, the editors have made a conscious effort to provide weblinks to the original documents that tell the story of the high-profile struggle over this "old-growth" forest controversy. This lets you get behind the analysis and descriptions to actually see how social science research is conducted. Overall, and excellent introduction to environmental politics as both an academic and activist pursuit.

From beginning to end, god like science, made simple........2005-10-29
Well, since 'M Class Planet Building for Dummies' is not due out for some time now, 'Terraforming: Engineering Planetary Environments' is the best book on the topic of building new planet Earths.
Starting with building up the atmosphere, and how to add water using comets, Martyn Fogg takes the reader from the dawn of time till today, with science and technology that would relatively speaking 'quick cook' a suitable planet into a new earth.
Not content to stop there, Martyn Fogg gives the proper technical explanations for how to construct a solar system, and push your favorite star into a perfect location using a form of a giant solar sail.
Hard Science, Solid Facts, Vivid Explanations, God-Like Vision.
Astounding. Worth much, much more than the few thousands each copy is selling for at today's prices.
The best book on terraforming to date.......2004-12-08
After reading Oberg's somewhat dated New Earths I became quite interested in terraforming. As a result I was very happy to learn about Fogg's much more recent work which was published in the mid 90's. Fogg's book builds upon Oberg's work, in many cases using more recent data provided by interplanetary probes. Fogg also presents new and interesting terraforming theories which have been put forward by space scientists since Oberg's work was published in the early 80's.
Contrary to what an earlier reviewer said this book is easy to follow even for a layman. You should be able to understand even the most advanced concepts in this this well written book if you have ever taken an astronomy course and you can understand high school level chemistry and algebra.
The only problem I have had with this book is getting my hands on a copy. While I was able to get the book via interlibrary loan relatively easily I was unable to purchase a copy for over a year. I would love to see this book reprinted, or perhaps Fogg could write a new edition. Trust me, if you are a terraforming or space enthusiast interested in colonizing the solar system this book is a must have. If you can find a copy of it for sale at a reasonable price then BUY IT. It is by far the best book that I have found on the subject of terraforming.
World's Renewed/Repaired/Renovated.......2000-05-24
Dr. Fogg's near-textbook is a delicious read, erudite and well-informed (technically and socially). It is entirely UNIQUE, there simply is nothing like, equivalent, or even slightly as useful as his work of a lifetime. Yet, Dr. Fogg is a young man and certainly dedicated to advancing a new field of human endeavour which will most certainly benefit all humankind. I've bought one for myself and one for a physicist pal in Bucharest, Romania. Plenty of hard science, but all is clearly presented so that anyone can enjoy and be stimulated by it. A big thumbs up!
Absolutely invaluable information.......2000-04-21
This is a wonderful book full of rich detail. As a layman, I found it daunting at first, and needed to get out my algebra book to go with it, but the effort was well worth it. Fogg does a good job of capturing the science, the issues, and the wonder of Terraforming.
Finally, a Terraforming "Textbook".......2000-03-26
While terraforming has been talked about for a long time in science fiction, it seems technical information about it is scarce. Martyn Fogg has compiled here the handbook of this diverse subject. Starting out by describing what terraforming is about (and what sort of grand engineering has been done to date), it then covers "engineering" Earth, Mars, Venus, and even the outer planets. How could you live "on" Jupiter? What would it take to make Io habitable? Spin up Venus? Shift the orbits of entire plants? It's here, and more. Rich in data, references, and calculations, it also covers both the planetary and biological aspects of the subject. Not for the math-phobic, but if you ever wondered "can you really do that?" about a science fiction terraforming idea, this will answer your question.
