This new edition has been extensively revised and updated since the 3rd edition published in 1994. It contains an even greater depth of industrial information, focussing on how copper metal is extracted from ore and scrap, and how this extraction could be made more efficient.

Modern high intensity smelting processes are presented in detail, specifically flash, Contop, Isasmelt, Noranda, Teniente and direct-to-blister smelting. Considerable attention is paid to the control of SO 2 emissions and manufacture of H 2SO 4. Recent developments in electrorefining, particularly stainless steel cathode technology are examined. Leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning are evaluated together with their impact upon optimizing mineral resource utilization. The book demonstrates how recycling of copper and copper alloy scrap is an important source of copper and copper alloys. Copper quality control is also discussed and the book incorporates an important section on extraction economics.
Each chapter is followed by a summary of concepts previously described and offers suggested further reading and references.

Interesting mix of topics.......2006-04-22

This book is a collection of lectures based on talks given at the second Osgood Hill Conference. Although this occurred in 1988 and many advances have been made in quantum gravity (particularly in the two leading candidates, string theory and loop quantum gravity), much of the material in this book is still very relevant. Of course a lot of things aren't covered, like the possible resolutions of black hole information paradox. The book is true to the title, the material is mostly very conceptual, but it is also fairly advanced.

The book opens with an excellent introduction to general issues in quantum gravity, this is the most basic chapter in the book the rest of it is considerably more advanced. Following this there are five major sections: quantum mechanics and measurements, the issue of time, strings, other approaches to quantum gravity and topology and black holes.

At a high level the talks cover issues in quantum mechanics, quantum cosmology and quantum gravity. By and large the discussions don't revolve around specific approaches to quantum gravity, but rather they focus on more general issues such as topology change or decoherence. Two topics stand out as receiving exceptional coverage, quantum cosmology and the problem of time. There is definitely a lot of material that isn't frequently covered.

I found most of the talks to be quite interesting. One of the really nice features of the book is that it often contains the question and answer sessions that followed the talks. Although I liked this book, given the nature of the contents and the price I can't really recommend it for purchase.

A Horror Book with Humor and Balls.......2007-08-13

I sat down with a tall cold one and The Bride of Trash and got so caught up in the wacky, weird, wild and seriously, seriously sick imagination of Mike Segretto and when I came up for air my beer was warm and I was halfway through the book.

Few writers take the kinds of risks he takes, and almost no one pulls it off with such punk elan.

the best splatter love story ever told.......2006-01-20

I am a big fan of Mike Segretto. His books are outlandish, crazy, funny and vile (in that order). this one is a love story between a crazy old junk shop owner and a reanimated headless corpse he finds in the garbage. It's no accident that the book carries a thumbs up from Hewschell Gordon Lewis, because it is the literary equivilent of one of his peak era movies - gloriously violent, surreal and hilarious. Mike writes in a genre of one, with no consideration for literary trends and I for one salute him. I'm holding out for a sequel.

Mediocre as an overview, good on development.......2005-03-15

When the casual reader buys a Vanguard book, it's for a general history -- some notes on development, some notes on deployment, some notes on upgrades and color schemes through the life of the vehicle, some notes on combat history, a short assessment of the vehicle's performance, and finally, if there's any space left over, a "where are they now" section for current service or where to find them in museums.

This book, which masquerades as an overview, is remarkably shallow on everything but development. In my opinion, that's a rather odd decision to make regarding a small folio-style overview with some color paintings in the middle of in-action vehicles. Most modelers will not be interested in knowing that on so-and-so a date, this experimental hull was modified in this-or-that way. The color plates are nice but there's little on the vehicle's usage to tie them into the text.

It doesn't help that the text is very dryly written.

Many of the other Osprey Vanguard books do a much better job at providing a good overview of the vehicles they cover, particularly the titles written by Zaloga. I'd pass on this one unless you are primarliy interested in the development of the vehicle.

A TII book friendly to your pocket.......2000-08-11

This book is a small gem. Reference on this tank is as complete as can be packed in 48 pages. Not only development history is included, but also are packed gun tables, direct comparisons to opposite tanks, and unit history with order of battle. Unless you plan to buy Jentz and Hillary more complete books, this is a must for the modeller and historian!

Great book for modelers!.......1998-12-07

This book is an invaluable source of information for plastic modelers building the German Tiger II.Color illustrations together with cutaway drawings provide accurate details of the interior layout of the tank.For future reference to the author, the addition of RAL numbers of paint colors as indexed to the colors in the illustrations in the book would be a possible improvement to be considered on this work.
