Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars At least the author is funny.......2007-01-15

Quote, page 21:

"The strong [efficient market hypothesis], which has been made illegal in some countries by laws against insider trading, states that..."

unquote.

Now, personally I don't agree with the strong EMH, but that is has been made illegal is indeed news. Buffett and Munger must be smiling.

Unclear thinking = unclear writing.

One star.

3 out of 5 stars Difficult, but comprehensive read.......2006-12-24

The Arbitrage Deskbook is thorough guide to arbitrage trading strategies. It is extremely comprehensive, covering arbitrage in all markets - from equities, to bonds, to commodity futures, and more. Most important is that it gets the reader to think like an arbitrageur and recognize the arbitrage opportunities presented by different situations.

This book is so comprehensive, that it does sacrifice some depth for breadth. Many complicated math problems are glossed over; it is difficult to understand some concepts thoroughly because the examples are not explained to great detail. If you see an important section, I suggest rereading it several times for better understanding.

In general, the author seems to expect the reader to have intermediate to advanced academic knowledge of finance. Familiarity with financial math and formulas will make this book easier to read. I suggest having some introductory college-level finance courses before reading, because the formulas presented may seem very cryptic if you've never seen them before reading this book.

In general, I think this is a great tool as a reference and for getting familiar with arbitrage. Don't expect to know everything by reading through it one time - there is too much information to remember on a single pass. Rather, try using this to learn how an arbitrageur seeks opportunity and then reference the topics later as you need them (i.e. keep this deskbook on your desk!). This is a great read for any student interested in entering proprietary trading or hedge funds.

5 out of 5 stars The best on Arbitrage!.......2006-10-26

This book is very detailed. It's a good book focusing on all aspects of arbitrage. The most interesting section to me was the part where it focuses on financial markets and currency trading and such. However, the author covers every aspect of arbitrage beautifully and includes real life examples of what might happen if any of the possible strategies were to be used.

Be forewarned that you must have a thorough understanding of calculus to get much use from this.

4 out of 5 stars Great Real Life Commentary on Financial Markets.......2004-12-30

This book can be seen as consisting of 2 parts:

1) Arb basics which "everyone knows" (assuming you have a serious interest in the field). These include description of financial instruments, their pricing and valuation, arb strategies, etc. This information is available from many other sources.

2) Author's commentary on these instruments and strategies (drawing from hands-on arb experience). This is the real value of this book. The author's writing is clear and witty. I really enjoyed it. This is certainly not a book for "dry finance course" as one reviewer noted. Given the subject matter (very abstract and dry in itself) the book is a suprisingly good read. Also, this is a real-life book written by a real-life practitioner. It provides you with many useful insights into the financial markets.

A great supplement to the advanced course in finance.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Arbitrage MathBook.......2004-12-21

I am a 18 year old College Freshman, majoing in Finance & Economics. This book was very good but like the opening few pages state this is meant for junipr pro's. The Math is about on the level of statistics and applied calc. I know a little of each, as I have not taken the classes yet, but I can see where the formulas are getting at. I am sure in a few years I will greatly apperciate all the info and math this book provides.

      Book Description

This book is a collection of 21 original papers on Latin American finance by prominent researchers in and out of the region. This is an attempt to bring them together under the same umbrella so that the commonality and peculiarity of Latin finance can be more easily discerned across different applications as well as compared across countries. While topics are diverse (encompassing corporate finance, banking, equity and bond markets, dollarization, and pension funds), the papers range from country-specific to comparative and international in perspectives.

                Book Description

For the first time, a synthesis on the research work done in Europe on all Bark And Wood Boring Insects In Living Trees (BAWBILT) is presented. As final product of a four-year research project gathering together 100 scientists from 24 countries, the book is the fruit of a real collective synthesis in which all European specialists have participated. It reviews and comments on all the European literature, while considering the biological (trees, insects, associated organisms, and their relationships) and forest management aspects. However, although focused on the European forest, it also compares the available information and interpretations to those concerning similar species in other continents. It ends with propositions of research priorities for Europe. The enclosed CD contains a relational database gathering all the BAWBILT research papers published in Europe during the last 30 years and some important older ones, and a series of colour pictures. The book is directed to all scientists and students concerned with forest entomology and ecology, as well as to forest managers and all scientific public interested in forest biology.

                  Book Description

The purpose of this text is to illustrate the wide variety of geoscience mapping that is presently undertaken around the world. To meet this goal, contributions from specialists in several countries were solicited to cover a number of subdisciplinary and thematic topics collectively called Geoenvironmental Mapping. Included in this compilation are topical papers on volcanic hazards, landslides, dolines, tsunamis, radon potential, medical geology, rainfall erosion, engineering geology, borehole stratigraphy, lake sediment geochemistry, aggregate resources, remote sensing, etc. The papers share common thread of relying on mapping and maps for communication of results. Individual papers in this volume serve the purpose of illustrating the relevance and importance of geosciences when dealing with 21st Century problems, issues and concerns. Geoscience has always been an important element in our understanding, appreciation and management of the Earth, but this relevance has lost respectability in recent years. The book reaffirms the global need for mapping geoscientific data. *The text is very well illustrated and should become a very excellent source of reference and class teaching material. 'Environmental Engineering', 2002.

                    Book Description

An acclaimed military historian leads you into the world of the combat sniper-on the safe side of the crosshairs...

From the black-powder chaos of the American Revolution to the bitter carnage of Vietnam, he is a presence as familiar to war as death itself. He is the combat sniper-revered as the ultimate warrior by some and reviled as a monster by those who have known the terror of his invisible ambush.

As the "Wild Boys" who crawled the no-man's-land between the trenches in WWI, terrorizing the enemy and dodging fire from the shelter of shell craters.

As the officer-hunting German snipers is WWII's Normandy-so unnerving that hardened commanders began to disguise their rank.

As the men who boasted a shot/ill ration of 1.7 to 1 in Vietnam-a figure that was 50,000 to 1 among general soldiers.

From the evolution of the art, to firsthand accounts of legendary exploits, through the basics of sniper training, Sniper traces the development of these feared huntsmen, marking their historical battles and their pivotal role in modern forces.

Very informative. Better if more illustrations/photos provided especially on the list of rifles. Can't visualize the rifle unless you're familiar with weapons.

5 out of 5 stars educational, yet inspirational in ways.......2006-03-24

This has a lot of historical background, I didn't mind too much reading it in this book, however I became kind of annoyed as I saw the repeated history over and over in other sniper books. I have to disagree with the reviewer who disliked the reading. It was interesting how the sniper came to be, but there are chapters (which really interested me) which covered ballistics, training, qualifications for a sniper, techniques, proper aiming, effects of gravity, mirage, and wind. I thought it was amazing and if you didn't really enjoy it or thought it was interesting, you aren't a true fan of snipers. You can't always just read about blowing people's heads off, sometimes there needs to be straight "here's what they do, and this is the outcome" aspect. This book inspires one to be a sniper through it's stories, makes one respect the sniper for their needed skills, and gives you an understanding of what they do and why they do it. It was an amazing book, even though it was PURE straight forward facts.

5 out of 5 stars A Good, Sound Study On Military Sniping.......2003-10-31

As a sargeant in the U.S. Marine Corps, and student of military science, I found Mr. Gilbert's book to be a well-rounded history and description of the skills, tactics, and training of military snipers. The book commences with the impact of highly skilled marksmen on the outcome of the American Revolution and Civil War, and how firearms technology developed in the many decades since. The bulk of the history covers the affect of snipers in the major wars of the 20th century. There are also chapters describing marksmanship skills and how modern militaries train personnel in this specialized skill. This book will be enjoyed by military history buffs and sport-shooters in general.

3 out of 5 stars Thorough and detailed, but not especially easy to read.......2003-04-22

Mr. Gilbert's book is remarkably thorough and well-researched. It includes an amazingly thorough bibliography and a fairly extensive listing of sniper rifles in use today.

The book starts with a history of sniping, and is very fair and balanced in its coverage. Unlike some books, Mr. Gilbert doesn't fall into the "we're the good guys and everyone else is slime" bias. For each war he talks plainly about which side was doing what, and how well it worked or didn't.

I found the chapter on Ammo particularly interesting, as it clearly describes bullets and their performance characteristics, including what happens when the hit something.

I take issue with some reviewers who suggest that this book teaches you about sniping. Although someone wanting to learn to be a sniper could potentially gain certain knowledge from this book, and although it is textbook-like in its tone, it is far from being some sort of how-to book. Someone who truly wanted "how to" specifics would be better off with any one of several books that are specifically written as instruction manuals.

I also take issue with the characterization of this book as an exciting or dramatic read. It is definitely not a page-turner. It describes the action in many wars and battles, but does not take you there with the immediacy of a book like "One Shot, One Kill."

Again, I find myself describing it as being like a textbook. Even though it goes into a lot of detail in many places, it also takes in broad sweeps of history. The best way I can think of to describe it is to say that, in this book, stories about individuals and their actions are brought in as secondary examples to illustrate the author's broader statements or claims. Other books tend to leave off most of the context and focus almost totally on the individuals and some of the actions they were involved in.

This books aims (no pun intended) to be very complete, while others aim to be entertaining ("entertaining" is not the best word to use to describe a book about shooting others, but you get the idea).

Don't get me wrong, though. It IS well-written, mind you! It is clear and factual, organized cleanly, and reasonably readable.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to someone who is seriously into military books or sniping, or even someone who is a student of history, as sniping is an area that is rarely, if ever, even mentioned despite the significant impact it has had in almost all wars or military actions. If you are heavily interested in any of these areas, then you definitely should buy this book. You will enjoy it and appreciate the quality and thoroughness of the book. And you will almost surely learn a lot. Even though I struggled to get through some of the chapters, I was engrossed by other chapters, such as the one on Ammo.

However, if you're not particularly hard-core about the topic, you will probably not be drawn into it and may not even get through more than a couple of chapters before giving up.

                    4 out of 5 stars Sniping 101.......2003-01-12

This book was rather disturbing in its true-to-life explination of the ways and workings of the standard Military sniper. Starting with an indepth history of sniping and its techniques, technoligy, and traditions, it leads you into a full clarification of the dynamics and requirements of being a successful sniper. I'd fear what could happen if this book was ever read by an unstable teen. Regardless, however, Gilbert relays the sincere reality of a sniper's mission, placing you behind the scope, anticipating the kill. A definate buy in my list, if you're a military buff.

                      Book Description

This collection of essays is the first to examine the impact of the French Revolution. The legacy of the French Revolution extends far beyond the borders of France or even Europe-the ramifications of the Revolution of 1789 are truly global and continue to have an impact today. Although the French Revolution was a response to purely domestic concerns, it was immediately noted at the time by observers and many participants that its ideals were universal in scope and that its message traveled well. As a model for both discourse and action, it helped usher in a new age, one we still live in today, of nationalism, constitutional government, mass politics, citizen armies, and popular sovereignty. Twelve authorities analyze the historical and ongoing impact of the French Revolution on American political culture, nationalism and freedom in Eastern Europe, Russian intellectual life, colonial bondage, Middle East politics, the Mexican Revolution, and Chinese socialism.

Comprehensive and authoritative, this guide combines and updates two smaller, long-trusted regional books to provide seamless coverage of the entire California coast from just outside the Golden Gate Bridge to Mexico, with special attention given to the popular offshore islands between Point Conception and San Diego. Brian Fagan draws upon more than three decades of experience sailing those waters under all conditions to offer the definitive cruising guide for both sailors and powerboaters.

                      2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-10-05

After cruising in the Pacific NW for the past two years using the Douglass and Hemingway guides and the Waggoner Guide, we were admittedly spoiled. If that's the quality you expect, you won't get it here. On the other hand, we couldn't find an alternative, and this is better than nothing. The harbor diagrams were nice, but there aren't enough of them and what there are don't provide enough detail. The landmarks mentioned in the text often don't appear in the diagrams. We also noticed inaccuracies, but this could be due to time. For example, the fuel dock in Morro Bay wasn't where the guide said it was. However, the woman at the Visitor Information Center also thought it was in the direction indicated in the book. (For others looking for it, it's across from marker 12, not beyond 18.)

4 out of 5 stars Older book but good information.......2007-07-26

This is a good book for those interested in cruising the west coast, you can always get something out of the book if you plan to make that trip up the coast, lots of good information to research and make plans from.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding and unique.......2002-11-09

We have used Brian Fagans guidebooks from SD to SF for many years, but this is the best of the lot. We recently led a cruise to the Channel Islands, and made this a "must" for the cruisers, all of whom praised it highly. Really THE guidebook to coastal cruising in Central-Southern California---and a bargain!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent coverage of the channel islands.......2002-01-04

From a recent sailing trip out of Santa Barbara through the channel islands I can tell you that this book is invaluable. His treatment of safe ports and refuges (arranged very well but conditions) was fantastic and kept us out of danger.

This is a good readable book that does a good job of explaining how the unique topography of Southern California affects the weather there. Also covers the weather by region and season. Overall a decent weather book, especially for the weather enthusiast, novice, and potential resident of Southern California.

                                      Book Description

An insightful look into the background of current predator controversies, offering readers a better understanding of the species that inhabit the wild areas of the Pacific Northwest.

Amazed by the general public's near-total lack of understanding when it comes to predator issues, Dan Nelson seeks to separate the fact from the fiction surrounding these wild animals of the Pacific Northwest. Offering insights based on fair and comprehensive research, Nelson explores the natural habits of wolves, cougars, coyotes, lynx, black bears, and grizzly bears. He explains each species' current status, the policies surrounding it, human perceptions of it, and what the future might hold for its survival in this region.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for Washingtonians.......2006-11-16

You might infer from this book's title that it is only be interesting to people who live in the Pacific Northwest. That's not the case. Nelson provides a series of lively essays on major predators - - cougars, lynx and bobcats, coyotes, black bears, grizzly bears, and wolves. Most of each essay discusses that particular animal in general terms. The illustrations of particularly issues tend to come from Washington State, but Nelson places them in a general context. For example, he might discuss Washington's program of lethal control of coyotes, comparing the state's numbers to the national numbers. In short, you don't have to live in Washington to enjoy this book. (I don't.)

The book is very readable and accessible to a wide audience. Nelson keeps the text lively by telling stories of his own interactions with these animals while hiking through the state. At the same time, it's packed with information about these animals and about their interactions with people.

This is a very short book (130 small pages of text), and Nelson could easily have expanded it to encompass other mesocarnivores such as the weasel family (mustelids). Wolverines are extremely rare but reentering the state from Canada, and Washington's Department of Fish and Wildlife is preparing a fisher reintroduction plan for the Olympics. Other mustelids are also found in the state. Maybe a second edition?

Anyway, it's a great, brief introduction to these animals in North America.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful and insightful!.......2001-04-18

This little book came to my attention as I was perusing the new books in the university library where I work. I have been reading more and more the books on wild animals in our collection. Most are older but still very interesting. Little by little the myths perpetrated by who knows who are being replaced in my mind with actual research being done on predators and prey. This book brought me up to date on the animals of today and in my area! The Pacific Northwest!

The author shows much enthusiasm for his subjects: cougars, lynx, wolves, coyotes, black and grizzly bears. He shows with a methodical logic that everything has a place in the ecosystem. He doesn't excuse the animals - he helps to explain them! He makes me proud once again to be a member of the two legged species known as man!

He has a wonderful sense of adventure and great advise on how to coexist with the wildlife that I am more and more giving respect and gratitude for the beauty they give to our world! I probably will buy a copy of this book even though our library has a copy - for all the information that it has inside the 134 pages! Great book! It was a joy to read!
