Insider's View of Venture Capital.......2002-04-16

I have been a limited partner in venture firms for over twenty years. Karen Southwick's "fly on the ceiling" view of actual general partners meetings was an eye opener. She pulls no punches such as a general partner's comments on one firm, "I've basically given up on the company. They did everything I told them not to. There's no CEO. They're going to run out of money and I don't want to write another check"... "I've totally lost confidence in the team". This honest reporting of behind the scenes action makes the book a must read for anyone interested in venture capital and Silicon Valley.

An interesting book on climate change in history.......1998-12-09

An impressive collection of papers by experts in archeology, cultural geography, history, geophysics, paleoclimatology, etc. on the possible roll of significant climate changes in the roughly simultaneous collapse of the Akkadian Empire, the Old Kingdom in Egypt, the Harappan civilization and various places inbetween. I am not an expert in any of the disciplines listed, but I still found many of the papers interesting. The overall conclusion - that sudden climate change was the explanation for the collapse of civilizations from Anatolia to the Indus - appears to be well supported. I have two reservations. First, if you don't know anything about Bronze Age history, you will be lost starting at page 1. Second, most of the papers are written by experts for experts, and a reader without prior knowledge of rather arcane scientific specialties will have difficulty following some of the papers.

This volume contains the papers presented at Symposium B of the 1998 spring meeting of the European Materials Research Society (E-MRS). The symposium attracted well over 100 scientists engaged in one common goal - that of developing efficient light emitting Si-based structures. This included various technical approaches such as porous silicon, Si nanocrystals, rare-earth doping of Si, light emitting silicides, Si-based multilayer and alloy structures and SiGe structures. In this respect, the meeting had a more multidisciplinary approach than previous meetings, the main idea being a fruitful comparison of the different techniques that would also stimulate cross-disciplinary research.

Generally, presentations at the conference revealed high scientific quality and several new findings and refinements of existing techniques were disclosed. One example was the much-debated report of optical gain from a structure containing Si nanocrystals. Another example was the dramatically improved stability of derivatised porous silicon. The technique of producing porous Si microcavities has been refined such that cavities of high optical quality may now be fabricated. The latest material to emerge as a candidate for a Si-based light emitting device has been iron silicide and room temperature operation has been reported. The interest is further motivated by the prospect of obtaining direct bandgap emission.

The 90 collected papers represent about 80% of the submitted papers out of more than 140 accepted abstracts. The papers have been grouped according to subject although no ordering within each subgroup has been attempted. All invited papers have been placed in the foremost section to serve as reviews in each separate field.

This is focused on The application of Si in optical devices. I think that this book is very interesting and helpful to graduate students or any people who want to know how important Si is in the optoelectronics.

This book came as something of a suprise. Although I have been interested in U-boats since watching das boot as a child I hadn't seen this book before. It turns out that it is one of the best accounts written by a U-boat Captain that I have had the please to read. Informative, well written and featuring a number of rather unusual and extremely exciting actions. I only wish it was a little longer...

Beautifully written, Spellbinding........1999-06-16

Thoroughly captivating storytelling of George F. Kennan's strategic thought. I enjoyed the book from beginning to end. If this is a first book for Dr. Russell, I believe we are seeing genius in the making. Perhaps the present forgers of US foreign policy should review this book and look to its author as blueprint for Foreign Policy as we known it. This book truly breaks down Kennan's strategic thought, with explanations a fifth grader could come to understand. Awesome. Beautifully written. Spellbinding.
