The Fabian trend-following plan is one of the simplest [and] most understandable, and is one that investors can actually live with. --The Hulbert Financial Digest
Over the past two decades, even before the introduction of enhanced index funds, Dick Fabian has helped thousands of individuals average an astonishing 17 percent compounded growth. His mutual fund-based investment plan was ranked #1 nine times by the respected Hulbert Financial Digest.
Now, in The Mutual Fund Wealth Builder, Fabian gives individual investors the tools to trade mutual funds with lowered risk and increased rates of return. This plain-spoken book shows investors how to:
*Follow six investment steps to increase returns
*Understand concepts including compounding and indexing
*Perform--and act on--their own market analyses
Customer Reviews:
Great writer, good plan, somewhat outdated........2006-08-31
Dick Fabian really cared about teaching people what he had learned from investing. Sadly, his son is money hungry and didn't keep up the free info that is referenced in the book on the website. I learned a lot about investing and some basic strategies to avoid major losses in the stock market. His theory isn't going to make you rich overnight, but hopefully it will raise your rate of return a couple of points over your lifetime, which could mean big bucks for some people. If you look closely, he says shoot for 20%, but he even points out that his picks over time only got him 14%. I will say one thing, if you would have used his plan, you would have been out of the market during the whole stock market crash in 2000-2002 and back in the thing in 2003. That alone makes this worth a read.
Enlightening.......2006-01-21
This is a great book! You can really tell that Mr. Dick Fabian's objective is to help out small investors to make money on the market. He outlines a specific trading strategy that will get you into the market when the trend is up, and out of the market when the trend is down.
About the 39WAR that the other people are complaining about, saying that it cannot be found anywhere on the web, and that it is a sales pitch. This is not true. 39WAR is the same as 200-day moving average, which are generally available on any charting software, as well as online charting sites like Yahoo Finance, Stockcharts, and Big Charts. How did I came into this conclusion? Easy: 39 Weeks = (39 x 5) days = 195 days - five days, since the market only trades during the weekdays.
I believe the 39WAR is a relic from the past, since during the earlier days, market data are most accessible via weekly reports on newspapers. Furthermore, most investors would not want to calculate 200-day averages by hand - it's just too tedious. But of course, with the advent of computers and the Internet, any decent spreadsheet can do this calculations for you.
Read this book if you want a 20% annual return.......2005-08-30
In early 2001, after watching the poor job my bank, and then later Merrill Lynch was doing with my Rollover IRA, I went to a book store looking specifically for an author that had a formula for getting in and out of mutual funds during up and down markets. It took only five minutes of browsing this book to realize it was exactly what I was looking for. In May 2001 I finally completed transfer of all funds into a money market account at Charles Schwab. But alas, Dick Fabian's formula (the 39 week moving averages)told me not to buy any mutual funds. My account remained stationary during the next 7 months, through the bear market, through 9/11 until the next buy signal hit in December. I have been in and out of the markets twice since then. In May of this year I picked up my calculator to see what my return has been over the past 4 years. 20% annual return! This despite one of the longest bear markets this country has ever seen. Thank you Dick Fabian for this amazing book. Even though the book is 4 years old now, the principles still apply. Fabian recommends using a discount broker like Charles Schwab, but they are no longer the best "deal" out there. Reviewer Wiley states that Fabians 39 week average readings are not to be found except for his sons expensive web site. Wiley must have skipped page 123 that shows you how to substitute Fabians 39 week average reading of his own Domestic Fund Composite with the Dow and S&P 500.
Sales Pitch.......2004-04-17
I'm not going to comment on the effectiveness of Fabian's principles, but I will comment on a serious problem I had with the book. The 39WAR that he relies on for technical indicators of when to be in stocks and when to be out of stocks is very difficult to find. The only place I could find it on the web was on his son's website and it came along with a rather pricey subscription to his newsletter. To me, this is a glaring sales pitch that the book predicates itself on, and to me is a serious conflict of interest.
Of course, this is all not to say that his principles aren't effective, they very well may be.
A simple investment plan highly recommended.......2003-10-25
Based on the previous reviewer comment, I wonder if we read the same book. This is NOT a "get rich quick" book - it's polar opposite. Perhaps "get rich slowly" would be more appropriate. I've read both this book, and Maverick Investing which is written by Doug Fabian (Dick's son). If choosing between the two, this much better. (However, Maverick Investing does a better job discussing setting proper stop-losses based on your tolerance for risk. I recommend reading both books). An excellent read on taking control of your investments. It provides step by step instruction as to how to set goals for your investments via mutual funds, select the right funds, track those funds, and when to buy and sell. He uses a very simple technique to get you in an out of the market by tracking your funds against two indexes - a broad market index, and another index reflecting the type of funds you own. You track your funds by using 39 Week Average Readings (more commonly known as the 200 day moving averages - which can be found anywhere on the web). In a nutshell, his technique will not get you into the market at the very bottom, and won't get you out at the very top. But he will get you in and out somewhere in between which is a far more realistic approach for positive long term results. The opposite of get rich quick, it simply shows that by setting realistic goals, and learning to recognize existing trends, how very small investments over a long period will result extrodinary wealth. For those who already have a healthy retirement nest egg, he shows you how to pay yourself during retirement while still growing your principal. This is a great introductory book on investing using a proven approach which only requires a few minutes a week to maintain. The book's has two shortfalls. First, he could have provided more information about available online resources (such as Morningstar.com) which will make it even easier to screen and select the proper mutual funds. Secondly, he could have spent more time emphasizing the need to select a track your funds against their appropriate indexes.

Book Description
With the passage of the Riegle-Neal Interstate Banking and Branching Efficiency Act and the Riegle Community Development and Regulatory Improvement Act in 1994, some Americans celebrated the dawn of a new banking era. These laws, which provided some relief from regulation, represented the first revision of the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. In the intervening sixty years, the U.S. banking industry had undergone dramatic changes, both domestically and internationally, and yet the laws associated with banking remained fixed and intransigent. No amount of regulatory flexibility or bankers' ingenuity was able to substitute fully for modernization of the banking laws necessary to keep pace with the revolution in the banking and financial services industries. The new legislation represented a rapid realignment of American banking laws with societal norms; as such, it generated confusion and uncertainty for many bankers and their constituents, for example, stockholders, customers, and employees. Matasar and Heiney examine public data since 1994 in an effort to fully apprise scholars and practitioners of the changes that have irrevocably altered the landscape of American banking. The Riegle-Neal Act and the Riegle Act were the first blows to the dominance of Depression-era legislation in banking. The second was the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act of 1999, which eliminated major portions of the Glass-Steagall Act. This study, which analyzes data from 1994 to 1999, ably captures and isolates the effects on American banking of the twin Riegle laws alone, with the noted exceptions of changed circumstances that may have resulted from other environmental factors (but not from other banking legislation). The focus here is on interstate banking experiences. Matasar and Heiney's analysis reveals the direction that changes associated with the law are likely to take and thus serves as a baseline for future research and analysis.

Product Description
Best selling novelist Debbie Macomber, a lifelong knitter, says "Peggy Gaffney has introduced a new idea into the knitting realm. Your're in for a real treat." Debbie Macomber, who often includes Goldens in her novels, is talking about the new idea of creating a whole book that deals with designing portraits in knitting of a single breed of dog. As she explains in her Forward to The Crafty Golden Retriever Knits, "Really, what could be better? Yarn, a pair of knitting needles, a good pattern, and a faithful companion by your side." The concept starts with stories. These stories about the Golden give the reader a broad understanding of all the activities the dogs enjoy. They are written by Peggy Gaffney with the help of those who know and care about the breed most. These stories in turn inspire portraits. These are portraits of Goldens hunting, doing agility, rescuing a child, diving from a dock, and performing a myriad of activities that make these dogs distinctive. Only these portraits are created using knitting stitches. The knitted portraits appear as more than 20 charted graphs that knitters may work into any of the 24 sweater and accessory patterns included. The Crafty Golden Retriever Knits is beautifully illustrated with over 75 photographs of Goldens involved in every possible activity as well as just being dogs. The photographers who illustrate the book are Betty Schmidt, who specializes in photos of dogs competing in field trials or hunting with their owners, and Mary and Joseph MacQueen, who photograph dogs from their own Nitro Golden kennel. Mary shares the experience of her work in search and rescue and drug detection in which she and her dog Ch. Robin are vitally active and the story is an inspiration. The Crafty Golden Retriever Knits is the third volume in the unique Crafty Dog Knits series from publisher Kanine Knits. The concept is to take a single breed of dog, tell about all the things they do that are distinctive to that specific breed, and then turn this information into designs. Author-Designer Peggy Gaffney, also a lifelong knitter has spent the last 40 years breeding and showing purbred Samoyeds. She has insight inot the world of purebred dogs and the passion and loyalty each owner feels for his specific breed. The two previous books in this series are The Crafty Samoyed Knits and The Crafty Labrador Retriever Knits.
Customer Reviews:
Golden Retriever portraits in knitting.......2007-08-13
The stories that become the designs are wonderful. Where else could you find so many Golden patterns in one place and have them doing everything. Plus, you get all the different sweaters charted out in every size. There are so many choices. The story of Robin the wonderful Golden who not only made the top 20 as a show dog but works every day as a search dog and narcotics detection dog was amazing. The photos of all the dogs and puppies are beautiful.

Book Description
This longterm study of the Genus Duvalia deals with all aspects of modern biosystematic research. All - partly rare - taxa were investigated, using living material. Apart from a sound investigation of the often complex and variable morphology, insights into the overall biological behaviour is offered, which has never been possible for these organisms before. Special emphasis is placed on the reproductive behaviour, which was reconsidered by field observations in South Africa, extensive crossing experiments and chromosome investigations. Based on chromosome and phytogeographical data, a sound phylogenetic evaluation is presented, giving an idea of the development of the genus in space and time.

Improving on all other versions of Sun Tzu's The Art of War, this translation is an award-winning, gift-quality hardcover book priced like a paperback. The left-hand pages contain the original Chinese ideograms individually translated while the facing right-hand page contains the English sentence translation.
Customer Reviews:
the art of war.......2007-09-25
very educational book.its very interesting that many of todays generals still use tactics learned from this translation
Inferior but useful........2006-05-16
Gagliardi's book is useful in that it offers the original chinese text with an attempt to define each ideogram of the text. It's also readable. That's all for it's good points.
On the following points, I regard this work as inferior:
1. The language is designed to appeal to a certain readership, the businessman.
2. The author knows neither chinese, nor does he seem to be well-versed in ancient chinese culture and history, and this adversely affects the self-proclaimed "accuracy" of the translation.
3. Ancient commentaries are omitted.
4. He fails to identify the "popular translation" which contains the errors he describes. I'm unable to find those particular errors where he says in any of the other translations I have.
This is the second worst translation I have.
I have 17 editions of the Art of War and 13 different translations, including two in spanish, one in italian, and one in German. For truly scholarly english translations, I would recommend Roger T. Ames, or Ralph D. Sawyer's. They offer historical background on Ancient China and many other details...AND they know chinese.
For a more strategic treatment, I would recommend Samuel Griffith's work which contains a foreward by B.H. Liddel-Hart, and also a comparison to Mao Tse-Tungs work on Strategy.
If you are still antsy to purchase Gagliardi's "work," bear in mind: It's written to sell, not to educate. And from here on out, I find that I can NEVER trust a book review from Midwest Book Review. (Another glowing review can be found on the back of the book itself.)
Poor Translation of Sun Tzu's Classic.......2005-05-30
This is an interpretive book, written and presented by Gary Gagliardi, loosely based on Sun Tzu's classic material.
Mr. Gagliardi attempts to apply the lessons of Sun Tzu's The Art of War to business practice and corporate thought, based on his understanding of the work, as well as his background in sales, marketing and management theory.
The book contains what the author asserts is the most accurate translation of Sun Tzu's work ever attempted. This description of the text is highly debateable, based on the merits of the text itself. Mr. Gagliardi achieved his translation using an internet encarta program, in which you can do a simplified character search in Chinese, and see some of the interpretive meanings of each pictogram. Based on Mr. Gagliardi's word choices, the author appears to have selectively chosen what he believes to be the correct English terms, and these results are often wrong. Since he has no formal training or background in reading / translating Chinese, this comes as no suprise.
This is certainly not a definitive work.
It doesn't seem that accurate.......2005-04-22
I've just bought the book swayed by the award for translation. So what do I think?
Well they don't translate the same character by the same word. For example in the first chapter they translate gai (plan) as 'philosophy', when later on the same page they translate tao as 'philosophy', a translation i would dispute to begin with. Further down the page, I would prefer to translate the line saying that one's followers must not fear danger and dishonesty, as saying they must not fear their leader's betrayal and dishonesty.
In section 5 of chapter 1 the words characters meaning 'temple' are given in the chinese side of the page and not mentioned at all in the translation. In fact the whole of section 5 seems innacurate.
Ok I might well be wrong, I'm no scholar of Chinese, but is the author? Has he convinced people because it reads well (which it does) and because he insists on the accuracy of his version?
On the other hand, it is clear that a translation with chinese text with character translation is better than no chinese text at all. Sun Tzu is notoriously hard to translate, or to read in chinese for that matter.
While I can't recommend the text, and feel a bit 'done in' as it were, still the best thing for someone with no Chinese is to read lots of different English versions, and then look at a chinese version as supplied here and work it out yourself. This is a perfectly adequate version to start with.
Competent at best, inaccurate at worse..........2004-11-28
Whoever this Gary Gagliardi is, his mastery of the Chinese language leaves much to be desired; looking at his credentials, it sounds suspiciously as if he missed out mentioning one thing...hmmm, does he *know* Chinese? For one thing, translating the beautifully laconic ancient Chinese into brash staccato lines of poetry simply does not work; worse is his frequent mistranslations -- the character "ye" is often translated as "also", when it simply means "period" in an age where punctuation wasn't invented yet and ideogram characters are still used for sentence closure. Sun-Tzu here comes across as a livid boy scout master trying to rigorously hammer platitudes into our minds. There is this sneaking feeling that much of these "translations" are done using a computer software. Try Ames for a more accurate version. I'm very hard pushed to recommend this edition.

Non-biased views of important global issues.......2007-04-05
This book is a very good introduction on many global issues. The chapter with the case study of FGM is particulary interesting. Kelleher does a good job of representing both sides of an issue without producing a bias or preference towards one. The book is also at a pretty basic comprehension level so it is easy for most adults to read.
