The purpose of this book is to educate the reader on ways to invest their money and ways to save. It talks about making your own portfolio, staying organized, and saving your money while you are young. It says to make your saving direct deposit and to save money for a safety net. For young adults 20 to 30 years old, the book says the best chance of accumulating wealth is with stocks. The first chapter also explains that most young people don't save and they spend more than they bring home, which digs them into debt. The best way to plan for the future is by saving as much money possible. "T. Rowe Price Associates figures that if you invest $100 a month starting at age 30, you will have over $177,000 by the time you retire at age 65." (pg.57) The book tries to make you think in percentages by saying things such as "your $35,000 portfolio suddenly shrinks by $1400, but put in perspective it just dipped 4%." (pg.62)

The problem with the book is that it was published in 1996 and some of the information is outdated. For example the book says that "Even better than an IRA are 401(k) retirement-savings plans offered by many large corporations. But invest at least 60% of the money in IRAs, 401(k) plans, or other retirement accounts in a broad mix of common stocks." This isn't true at all because America's economy is failing and all of our money is going to the national debt. I also doubt some of the positive statements about stocks because America is nothing like it used to be in 1996. And since this book was written by the Wall Street Journal, I feel like it has an exaggerated view of stocks and not enough about the negative effects. The Lifetime Guide to Money basically says that Americans need to save their money.

5 out of 5 stars Great Beginners Book.......2001-11-08

While this film is clearly not for people that have a background in investing, it is an excellent reference for people that are just looking into their financial situations. It is packed with information that is presented in a very basic manner so that anyone can understand it.

The book is divided into different sections ranging from investing and insurance, to estate planning. In each of these sections, the contents are further divided into different phases of people's lives (20-30's, 40-50's, 60'+). This is helpful in allowing one to reflect on their own strategies as well as where they may be headed.

Again, the real strength of this book is how rudimentary it is. It would be a terrible disappointment to anyone that has even a minimal understanding of finance. Thus, if you are seriously considering this book, know that it will be a good refresher if you are rusty, or jumping off point if you have no knowledge.

I was particularly impressed with the discussion on estate planning. I have an advanced background in finance and investing, but nevertheless was able to gleam a pearl or two.

This book makes a great reference as well. I chose to read it cover to cover, but it would have been equally as helpful as a reference book. People with children may even consider purchasing it as a project to go over with their kids. Best of luck.

4 out of 5 stars Use as a Reference.......2001-08-07

Don't read this book like a book. Use it as a reference guide for the particular area that you need to learn about and the stage of life that you are in. That is the way to get the best out of this book. I found it very helpful and refer to it for study and ideas.

4 out of 5 stars I liked it - it continues to be a good reference........2001-01-21

The book hit upon all common aspects of personal finance with a chapter devoted to each, and did so in stages that correspond to a person's life: 20s-30s, 40s-50s, 60s and beyond. After giving an overview in that format, each aspect was discussed in detail with ideas, things to look at in your own finances, and common pitfalls. Yes, reading it cover to cover, many things were repeated; however, I'm using it now as a reference, looking up only the chapter or subheading I need, and I've found that I don't have to flip back and forth to various pages in other chapters. Each chapter can stand alone, as can each subheading. I moderate a family finance forum, and refer to the book a lot in this way.

One thing I absolutely love about the book are the various checklists, worksheets and tip boxes. I've put some of the calculators on spreadsheets for my own use, and have shared them with other folks who are interested in personal finance.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2001-01-08

Despite being associated with the Wall Street Journal, the group of persons involved in putting together this guide have not a clue how to prepare a comprehensive, understandable, and readable personal finance guide. It is horribly repetitive, and gets way too hung up on obvious, simple concepts (how many times do I need them to remind me to minimize credit card debt, and to avoid spending too much and saving too little?). It is very poorly organized, and the editor should be taken out and strangled for the way he allows so much of the book to be taken over by meandering, verbose paragraphs trying to describe the simplest concepts. It is almost as if they assume everything you have done in your life so far with your finances has been totally brainless, and they need to beat you over the head with it. It is like being lectured by an uncle who doesn't know how to shut up and has had too much to drink.

And to make matters worse, why must they use light green ink throughout the book; this makes it all but impossible to read, except under high-power halogen lamps. It causes extreme eye fatigue, and makes an already unreadable book infuriating. I can't help but wonder what the true connection to the Wall Street Journal must be for such a badly written, poorly edited book such as this, especially when they find the need to resort to a cutesy tactic such as green print throughout (oh, I get it! Money is green, therefore the book is in green print - Ha Ha Ha!)

              Book Description

The Culture of Capital brings together leading literary critics and historians to reassess one of the defining features of early modern England-the idea of "capital." The collection reevaluates the different aspects of the concept as it emerged amidst the profound economic, social, and technological changes typical of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. As the essays move from the birth of private property and the rise of cities to the appearance of the printed book and the claims of modern science, the contributors reveal the nuanced relationships among economic value and other forms of religious, cultural, political, and intellectual value, as well as the persistence of objects, activities, and concepts that resisted becoming "capital" in a modern sense. Offering exemplary models of rigorous theoretical, literary, and historical work, the volume maps the ground for a new, enriched, interdisciplinary history of early modern England.

                      Book Description

The system of multicellular animals presented here is an alternative to the traditional classification system which still operates with the categories of Carl Linné, including typological divisions in artificial species groups. In a new approach to the phylogenetic order in nature this book strives for an objective systematization of the metazoa. It seeks a new path in the field of academic research and teaching based on the theory and methodology of phylogenetic systematics. This volume covers the metazoa from the Molluscs up to the Arthropods; the forthcoming volume 3 will cover all the remaining metazoa.

                        Book Description

Stratigraphy is the key to understanding the geological evolution of the earth. It provides the framework for our interpretation of the sequences of events which have shaped the earth throughout its 4600 million years of existence. It provides the timescale with which we can determine the relative order of these events, and it provides the means whereby we can calibrate this using absolute ages in years. Stratigraphy is therefore the most fundamental subject in the science of geology, and all geologists are practising stratigraphers. Traditionally, however, stratigraphy has been considered as a Victorian science, a ponderous process of the naming and cataloguing of innumerable geological units most of which are of limited interest outside of a given geographical region. This view has been challenged in recent years through the development of new techniques such as sequence stratigraphy, cyclostratigraphy and chemostratigraphy which have greatly enhanced our capability to interpret earth history. In this book many of the leading practitioners of modern stratigraphy have been gathered together to provide up-to-date and authoritative reviews of most of the important advances in the subject. As such it is the only volume to provide a comprehensive treatment of modern stratigraphy at an advanced undergraduate level.

                          Book Description

"Wittier than Dorothy Parker, dissects the rich better than F. Scott Fitzgerald, is more plaintive than Willa Cather in her evocation of the heartland and has a more supple control of satirical voice than Evelyn Waugh, the writer to whom she's most often compared." (Lisa Zeidner, The New York Times)

For decades after her death, Dawn Powell's work was out of print, cherished by a small band of admirers. Only recently has there been renewed awareness of the novelist who was such a vital presence in literary Greenwich Village from the 1920s to the 1960s.

Dawn Powell was the tirelessly observant chronicler of two very different worlds: the small-town Ohio of her childhood and the sophisticated Manhattan to which she gravitated. If her Ohio novels are more melancholy and compassionate in their depiction of often-frustrated lives, her Manhattan novels, with their cast of writers, show people, businessmen, and hustling hangers-on, are more exuberant and incisive. But all show rich characterization and a flair for the gist of social complexities. A playful satirist, an unsentimental observer of failed hopes and misguided longings, Dawn Powell is a literary rediscovery of rare importance.

5 out of 5 stars An American Novelist Attains Stature (II).......2003-02-26

This book is the second volume of the Library of America's compilation of the novels of Dawn Powell (1896 - 1965), a writer whose works have attained deserved if belated recognition. The first volume included five novels of Dawn Powell written between 1930 and 1942. This, the second, volume includes four of Powell's novels written between 1944 and 1965.

Powell's earlier novels generally are set in small-town Ohio in the early 20th Century. They have as themes what Powell saw as the conformity and frustration, sexual and otherwise, of small-town life. The main characters in these books, typically young people, long to escape to make a new life for themselves in the city. The latter novels are, for the most part, set in New York City where Powell lived most of her adult life. The novels are comic and satirical, sometimes sharply so. They reflect loss of innocence and love and, on occasion, fall into cynicism.

The first volume of the Library of America compilation included two early Ohio novels, "Dance Night' and "Come Back to Sorrento" and three novels reflecting Powell's change in style and theme and set in New York City, "Turn, Magic Wheel', "Angels on Toast", and "A Time to be Born."

The second volume opens with a novel in which Dawn Powell returned to the setting of small-town Ohio. The book, "My Home is Far Away" (1944), is a fictionalized account of Powell's early unhappy childhood. The book offers a poignant picture of the death of Powell's mother and of her father's remarriage to a cruel and jealous stepmother. There are excellent scenes of the family wandering through cramped Ohio towns and small dusty hotels and back neighborhoods. The father himself is portrayed as a travelling salesman who generally behaves carelessly and irresponsibly to his three daughters. Powell initially planned this book as the first of a trilogy. This project did not materialze.

In the next book in the collection, "The Locusts have no King"(1948), Powell returned to sharp satire and to New York City. The book is set after the conclusion of WW II and includes a memorable passage of reflection at the end on the United States atomic testing program at Bikini Atoll. The book contrasts the life of serious, scholarly writing and its difficulty with the life of superficial magazine publishing devoted to economic success and to popular culture. There is also a love story, serious to the participants, in which the main character of the book, a serious if unsuccessful scholar, becomes infatuated with a shallow, sexy blonde. This book reminded me of George Gissing's Victorian novel of the literary life, "New Grub Street" as well as of West's "Day of the Locust", which has some of the same themes and the same dark humor as does Powell's book.

Powell wrote "The Wicked Pavilion" in 1954. Unlike most of Powell's works, the book appeared on the best-seller lists for a very brief time. The book is set in New York City in the late 1940s and celebrates, if that is the word, a bar called "The Cafe Julien", located in Grenwich Village, and its patrons. The book is full of would-be artists without talent, unhappy lovers, and people on the lookout for the main chance. It is sharp, astringent satire very close to disillusion. The book is well and convincingly written.

Powell's final novel, and the last in this collection, "The Golden Spur" (1962) was nominated for the National Book Award. As does its predecessor, this novel centers around a drinking establishment which gives the book its title and its patrons. This book also is set in Grenwich Village in the 1950's and records novelistically the passing of an era. This novel, as are some of Powell's earlier works, is a coming-of-age story which tells the story of a young man who comes to New York City from Ohio to learn the identity of his father. In the process, the young man learns about himself as well. This book is impressive less for its story line than for the beautiful writing style Powell achieved in this, her last novel. The book is deliberately light in tone, and I think it ranks with Powell's best.

Dawn Powell produced a substantial body of excellent work describing the places and lives (primarily her own) with which she was familiar. The qualities of growing up, coming-of age, searching and frustration, and the loss of innocence are all well portrayed. The descriptions of New York City, in particular, are themselves irreplaceable. Those readers who enjoy the pleasure of discovering a previously little-known writer will enjoy the novels of Dawn Powell.

                          4 out of 5 stars A great find!.......2002-11-20

I jut read Wicked Pavilion and found it to be so very, very well written, funny, ironic and poignant. She is really a master and a great revealer of a certain part of American life that is hardly ever heard from - postwar NY artists & socialites. Wow! I love Dawn Powell and intend to read all her works.

5 out of 5 stars Satiric, witty, sharply written and observant fiction.......2001-10-15

An author of immense popularity, Dawn Powell (1896-1965) wrote satiric, witty, sharply written and observant fiction that went out of print following her death. Then in the early 1990s a renewed awareness of this major literary figure saw the reissuing of her work, only to have it fall back into obscurity once again. Now The Library Of America has brought her work back into print again and in a format that will insure that her fiction will continue to be available to both scholarship and the general reading public for decades to come. Volume 1: Novels 1930-1942 includes Dance Night; Come Back to Sorrento; Turn, Magic Wheel; Angels on Toast; and A Time To be Born. Volume 2: Novels 1944-1962 features My Home Is Far Away; The Locusts Have No King; The Wicked Pavilion; and The Golden Spur. Dawn Powell: Volumes 1 & 2 is a very highly recommended addition to both academic and community library literary fiction collections.

                              Book Description

When Barbary pirates captured an obscure Yankee sailing brig off the coast of North Africa in 1812, enslaving eleven American sailors, President James Madison first tried to settle the issue through diplomacy. But when these efforts failed, he sent the largest American naval force ever gathered to that time, led by the heroic Commodore Stephen Decatur, to end Barbary terror once and for all. Drawing upon numerous ship logs, journals, love letters, and government documents, Frederick C. Leiner paints a vivid picture of the world of naval officers and diplomats in the early nineteenth century, as he recreates a remarkable and little known episode from the early American republic. Leiner first describes Madison's initial efforts at diplomacy, sending Mordecai Noah to negotiate, reasoning that the Jewish Noah would fare better with the Islamic leader. But when the ruler refused to ransom the Americans--"not for two millions of dollars"--Madison declared war and sent a fleet to North Africa. Decatur's squadron dealt quick blows to the Barbary navy, dramatically fighting and capturing two ships. Decatur then sailed to Algiers. He refused to go ashore to negotiate--indeed, he refused to negotiate on any essential point. The ruler of Algiers signed the treaty--in Decatur's words, "dictated at the mouths of our cannon"--in twenty-four hours. The United States would never pay tribute to the Barbary world again, and the captive Americans were set free--although in a sad, ironic twist, they never arrived home, their ship being lost at sea in heavy weather. Here then is a real-life naval adventure that will thrill fans of Patrick O'Brian, a story of Islamic terrorism, white slavery, poison gas, diplomatic intrigue, and battles with pirates on the high seas.

                              5 out of 5 stars A real-life pirate story.......2007-03-23

While many might believe that the American entanglement with the Islamic world began with the first Iraq War, or at the earliest, the founding of Israel, we have actually been fighting with this area of the world much longer, even as far back as the first years of the United States. Of course, there are many differences between this early conflict and our current ones, so historical comparisons should not be too easily made between our current war and the one against the Barbary Terror, as chronicled by Frederic Leiner.

One significant difference is location: instead of the Middle East, the Barbary pirates operated in North Africa, particularly in the Barbary states of Morocco, Algiers, Tunis and Tripoli (the last with the famous shores of Tripoli). These pirates (or corsairs) actually worked for the local states, making them more akin to privateers. The goal was simple: steal the goods on merchant ships and enslave the crewmen, with the intention of ransoming them. There was an alternative, however: paying an annual tribute to each state, or what may now be thought of as protection money.

The Barbary states did rather well with this system, terrorizing the ships of the Mediterranean. Few seemed willing to do anything about the corsairs. This changed at the conclusion of the War of 1812, when James Madison authorized a war against the largest (and most duplicitous) state, Algiers. Led by naval war hero Stephen Decatur, a fleet would soon force Algiers into capitulation; what was worse for the Barbary states was their façade of strength was broken, and soon the world power England would turn its wrath towards these countries (which were technically part of the Ottoman Empire).

Another big difference with our current conflicts is the softening effect of time. With two centuries having gone by, the Barbary states seem more exotic than evil. Although generally a nasty lot, nowadays corsairs tend to be romanticized like all pirates (as the success of Pirates of the Caribbean attests). There has even been a casino called the Barbary Coast; I think it will be quite a few years till we are able to look nostalgically back at Sadaam Hussein and start naming hotels after his regime.

Leiner does a nice job of writing, as his title states, of the End of the Barbary Terror. This is, in a way, an adventure story that we already know the end of. It is also, despite the fact that it is almost forgotten nowadays, an important chapter in American history, and represents our first real military rout of an opponent. Leiner tells a good story and puts it in the proper historical context; if you enjoy reading about American or naval history, this is a book to read.

4 out of 5 stars Appeasement never works.......2006-11-10

A good object lesson to people who think that you can appease or negotiate with bullies. The USA was a little country that had just gone through three years of war with Great Britain, a mighty sea and financial power. Most European coutries simply paid annual extortion fees to the pirates to protect their shipping and hopefully send the pirates against their competitors' ships. The USA sent ships and solved the problem. This caused real consternation among the European population when they saw that the USA could send ships all the way across the Atlantic and fix the problem while their governments could only send taxpayer money year after year. Not only did the USA not pay any extortion money but they also returned many of the enslaved mariners to their home countries. Clearly Europeans didn't learn anything from this as we saw in the 20th century.

I give this a four due to several editing errors. It's not a long book so proofreading it should not have been a big burden.

4 out of 5 stars A interesting look at a rather unkown naval war.......2006-09-11

A rich and detailed look at an obscure event in U.S. naval history. "The End of Barbary Terror" describes a rather dashing adventure by a young U.S. Navy fresh off the Battle of 1812 with the British. Despite these challenges a band of brash and confident officers deployed the bulk of the U.S. fleet to the Med to destroy the Algerian Fleet and force the return of U.S. hostages and the end of payments to Algeria.

The book proves that the U.S. has been combating Islamic forces since its earlier days. While this was a very different war, certain similar ties between then and now can be seen

The author spends considerable team telling not only the operational naval portions of the battle, which were not exactly very exciting, but he focuses on the complicated political battles between naval leadership and national politicians. The author's naval knowledge seemed solid, but the description focus mainly on the officers, little is known or discussed about the rest of the crew. The same can be said of the Algerians. The great majority of sources were American, so what was going through the minds of Algerian leadership and naval officers could only be guessed.

The British Attack on Algiers was well done, and more riveting then the rather limited engagements between the U.S. and Algeria described earlier in the book. I recommend this book to any serious reader of naval history, who enjoys diving into the deep details of the U.S. Navy circa 1815.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well-written, informative, and insightful.......2006-06-17

If you like American historical nonfiction than this is a must read about a period in our history that has a lot of relevance to today. Fred Leiner brilliantly leads the reader through a time when a young America, after the War of 1812, looks to expand its trade but falls prey to the pirates of North Africa. Following unsuccessful diplomatic efforts, America feeling bold after the war, sets out to put an end to this state-sponsored Barbary terrorism at the hands of the Muslims of North Africa.

As the story unfolds, the reader finds that they are caught up in a complex political and military drama hampered by slow communications, egos, prejudices, and traditions. Mr. Leiner does an excellent job methodically and carefully unfolding the story, while at the same time thoroughly develops the participants and the dynamics among them. In several areas, he also challenges and explores past notions about events and decisions, venturing to offer his own opinions based upon his research and insight. From the beginning of the book, to the epilogue, Mr. Leiner has done a masterful job of giving us a thorough look at a very exciting and important brief period in American history that had a major impact on our developing nation.

I highly recommend this book, particularly to people perplexed by modern day terrorism. History certainly does have a way of repeating itself.

                                          Book Description

A complete introduction to the many mathematical tools used to solve practical problems in coding.

Mathematicians have been fascinated with the theory of error-correcting codes since the publication of Shannon's classic papers fifty years ago. With the proliferation of communications systems, computers, and digital audio devices that employ error-correcting codes, the theory has taken on practical importance in the solution of coding problems. This solution process requires the use of a wide variety of mathematical tools and an understanding of how to find mathematical techniques to solve applied problems.

Introduction to the Theory of Error-Correcting Codes, Third Edition demonstrates this process and prepares students to cope with coding problems. Like its predecessor, which was awarded a three-star rating by the Mathematical Association of America, this updated and expanded edition gives readers a firm grasp of the timeless fundamentals of coding as well as the latest theoretical advances. This new edition features:
                                          * A greater emphasis on nonlinear binary codes
                                          * An exciting new discussion on the relationship between codes and combinatorial games
                                          * Updated and expanded sections on the Vashamov-Gilbert bound, van Lint-Wilson bound, BCH codes, and Reed-Muller codes
                                          * Expanded and updated problem sets.

Introduction to the Theory of Error-Correcting Codes, Third Edition is the ideal textbook for senior-undergraduate and first-year graduate courses on error-correcting codes in mathematics, computer science, and electrical engineering.

                                            Book Description

Explores how the world's religions have a calling to build societies both environmentally sustainable and socially just.

The absence of strong spiritual and ethical dimensions in twentieth-century development helped to produce one of the most violent, environmentally impoverished, and economically unequal centuries in human history. Ethical and spiritual contributions in the twenty-first century are needed to rectify these pitfalls. Religions can help societies to wrestle with the bedrock question of societal advancement: What does it mean to be a developed society? In doing so, religious traditions help to create the new worldviews needed to build sustainable civilizations in the new century. Fortunately, many religious traditions are awakening to their vital role. Inspiring Progress identifies the value that religions add to the debate about societal advancement, and it encourages the world's religious traditions to step up their involvement in shaping the development path of the human family in the twenty-first century.
